Chris
Chris is the first-ranked Pure agent who teaches Quinn the second stage of Qi before either man fully understands the other's allegiance. Raised by Zero to become Pure's sword and to fight Leo, Chris spends centuries mistaking obligation to his rescuer for a complete moral answer. He eventually turns against Zero, helps dismantle Pure, and becomes one of the fighters who enters the demon world to support Quinn. The occasional spelling “Chirs” in the supplied text is treated as a typographical error, not an alias. (Chapters 780–806, 1080–1084, 1846–1864, 1952–1985, and 2393–2543)
Biography
Vampire World and the Cursed Faction
Chris first meets Quinn after spending seven days trapped on an inner planet without the technical skill to escape. He has survived by hunting and training, and recognises that Quinn's Qi is nearly exhausted. Chris transfers only the Qi his body naturally produces, warning that giving more would cost life force; when Quinn's vampire energy enters his arm, he isolates and expels it rather than allowing the infection to spread. The experience makes him curious rather than hostile. He introduces himself, offers to make Quinn his apprentice, and believes that teaching the second stage will give the younger fighter a better chance of surviving the planet. (Chapters 780–782)
Chris teaches through physical pressure and exact correction. He explains the first stage as moving Qi within the body or infusing an object, then makes Quinn lift a boulder with progressively less reinforcement so ordinary strength develops alongside energy control. The second stage forms an external coat over body or weapon, but the user's finite reserve must be shifted to the place of impact rather than spread wastefully. Chris tests that control through legendary-beast hunts, gives Quinn the resulting crystals, and plans a joint demi-god-tier hunt because he does not pretend he can defeat such prey alone. Quinn's unusually fast progress turns a practical alliance into genuine pride in a student. (Chapters 782 and 789–791)
Rejoining the world leaders exposes the conflict Chris had kept private. He recognises Oscar and Owen, tries to conceal his connection to Pure, and is surprised that Quinn is now a world leader. Even so, he offers to stand with his pupil during the dispute surrounding the Blade family. His own grudge against the demon-tier crab also draws him into the hunt: he uses third-stage Qi and his segmented blades to sever limbs and suppress their regeneration, but the exertion leaves him so depleted that Quinn removes him from danger. Chris then supports the campaign against Hilston, reasoning that Hilston's control of the Blade descendants threatens humanity's future regardless of faction. (Chapters 792–797)
Hilston demonstrates the limits of Chris's strength. Chris's refined second-stage protection lets him survive a direct clash, but Hilston's denser Qi body and demon-tier armour overwhelm the statistical reinforcement of Chris's blades. After recovering, Chris continues helping because he considers cooperation necessary for humanity's defence, not because Pure ordered him to do so. He nevertheless leaves in the white coat of Agent One and takes a Blade ship, saluting Quinn while privately hoping they will not next meet as enemies. The departure preserves both truths about him: his concern for Quinn is sincere, and so is his continuing allegiance to Pure. (Chapters 798 and 802–806)
Dalki War and Vampire Kingship
Away from Quinn, Chris operates openly as Pure's number-one ranked agent. He helps Zero demonstrate the organisation's fourth stage of Qi to Richard Eno, a technique that releases the latent soul-weapon energy of humans who never acquired an ability. He also enters the virtual combat rankings as the Red Reaper and watches non-ability fighters on Pure's behalf. These duties establish that Chris is not merely a wandering martial artist: he is one of the organisation's founders and an active participant in recruiting, training, and displaying its military power. (Chapters 952 and 988)
Chris later supervises a Pure-backed beast tournament while investigating Leo. Once he identifies the blind swordsman, he deliberately reveals his Qi and intends their meeting to answer the questions Zero has planted between them. A four-spike Dalki interrupts that confrontation, and Chris immediately fights beside Leo rather than preserve the planned rivalry. He uses Qi to steer and retract the linked segments of his blades, contests the Dalki's strength, warns Leo when the enemy deliberately traps the weapons, and keeps attacking after recognising that the creature can fly. His choice is tactical but personal: the Dalki is a common threat, and Chris hates it more than the man he was taught to oppose. (Chapters 1076–1081)
To reach the airborne enemy, Chris invokes fourth-stage Qi. The technique burns his latent soul-weapon energy to reinforce every ordinary strike as an internal Qi blow, turning his paired blades red and letting him propel himself through the air. It also carries a lethal cost: he exceeds the safe duration, becomes unable to move, and risks consuming his life force. His final throw is not an attempt at glory; he passes the better weapons to Leo, who completes the decapitation. The victory therefore depends on Chris recognising his own limit and entrusting the finishing action to the supposed enemy beside him. (Chapter 1082)
Afterward, Chris answers Leo honestly. He identifies Zero as Pure's leader and his own teacher, explains that Zero saved and trained him to serve as Pure's sword, and admits that he was specifically raised to fight Leo in Zero's place. Chris still defends Pure as a voluntary union of people harmed by ability users, yet his unstable Qi betrays doubt when he argues that ability dependence would have destroyed humanity even without the Dalki. Leo refuses to execute him and later stops a disguised vampire from assassinating him. Chris responds by trusting Leo over his own compromised ranks, leaving their inherited conflict unresolved but replacing caricature with firsthand respect. (Chapters 1083–1084)
Celestial Conflict and the Millennial Return
Chris remains responsible for actions committed under Pure. During the Dalki war he convenes the surviving agents and authorises Project Utopia once Zero's plan reaches its chosen moment. He personally coerces the Board, threatens their families, and argues that a corrupt ability-based world is not worth saving. The final order to seize Earth comes from Zero, but Chris enforces it and later controls the stadium operation that traps human and vampire leaders among Pure's hybrids. When the operation collapses, Zero orders an immediate retreat. Chris obeys, yet confronts him over abandoning their members, showing a moral objection that does not erase Chris's own agency in the scheme. (Chapters 1387, 1405–1406, and 1451–1455)
A millennium later, Chris remains Agent One and one of three leaders at Pure's floating city, but he increasingly resists Zero's choices. He objects when Zero accepts Erin after her killing of Leo and distrusts the partnership even while he administers the ship. When Muka, Peter, and their companions arrive seeking the truth about Leo, Chris dismisses the room, tells them that Leo had become his friend, and asks them to help bring Zero down. His motive is not sudden innocence: he describes Zero as a father who raised him for a single purpose, admits that he long sought the praise attached to killing Leo, and concludes that Zero's alliance with Leo's killer has exposed how thoroughly that devotion was used. (Chapters 1824, 1842, and 1845–1863)
Chris also supplies evidence beyond that personal betrayal. He reveals that Zero has drained slaves for years, that Pure's hybrid programme used beast-mixing research, and that Zero gave Chris werewolf DNA without undergoing the experiment himself. Chris does not know where Zero obtained the DNA or the full nature of the master directing him, and presents the latter only as a suspicion. He then chooses a concrete break: he leads the visitors into Pure's laboratory, destroys research and military facilities, asks them to spare ordinary residents, and stays behind to subdue agents he once trained. Chris expects to bear public blame as the “big bad wolf,” accepting that Logan's side may be unable to shelter him afterward. (Chapters 1863–1869)
Quinn initially mistakes the partially transformed Chris for an attacker, but Muka stops their fight and the two reconcile. Chris then works with Peter against a celestial, using his faster quadrupedal wolf form to carry Peter through attack angles neither could create alone. He keeps his promise to alert Logan, tracks Zero by the signature of his Qi, and finally challenges his former teacher. Chris tries to exhaust Zero's stolen reserve, then combines full werewolf transformation with fourth-stage Qi when that fails. He wounds Zero severely but loses to Zero's stored homing attacks and borrowed transformation; Erin later kills Zero and drains almost all of Chris's Qi. Quinn defeats Erin, returns Chris's energy, and Chris immediately prioritises stopping the portal and protecting Quinn. His restored werewolf body carries the group to the crisis, and he is publicly honoured after the portal closes. (Chapters 1870–1915, 1943–1985, and 1988)
Reawakened World and the Demon War
Chris helps reconcile former Pure supporters with Logan's government, but the later regime of Jack and Jim alters his memories. Under those false memories, Chris serves Jim, fights the Amra, and battles Quinn as if Quinn were the enemy. The corpus still shows fractures in the imposed story: Chris questions why Jim orders rather than fights beside them, recognises Sera despite the changes, and becomes suspicious when Quinn spares him while Jim is willing to destroy allies. When Sil restores the affected memories, Chris understands that he has again been used and is horrified by what he did under someone else's bidding. The episode distinguishes coerced conduct from consent without removing the consequences Chris remembers afterward. (Chapters 2003–2009, 2098–2101, 2223–2260, and 2298–2301)
Afterward, Chris works as an independent Traveller, helping hunting parties while refusing permanent membership. He tells the recruiters seeking a force for the demon world that his strength has repeatedly become a tool for other people and initially doubts that helping again will improve anything. He changes his mind because the mission is larger than a leader's request: Immortui has shaped multiple conflicts, Quinn entered alone, and failure endangers everyone. Chris therefore joins Peter, Sil, Russ, Edvard, Hikel, and the others by choice, while openly resenting that Quinn did not ask for help before leaving. (Chapters 2359–2367)
In the Red Space, Chris protects Chrono prisoners and fights the werewolves sent to consume them. Against Unzoku he discovers that his altered body belongs to a shapeshifter class that grows stronger around other werewolves, but the demon king still destroys his phasing armour and leaves him considering the predatory solution of eating the surviving Chrono. Chris refuses that impulse and later condemns the earlier life-stealing techniques he learned under Zero. When the mission requires greater strength, he restricts his feeding to enemy Yak demons, preserves a demon general's blood for Quinn, and helps kill Bisha before consuming part of the demon king. He initially refuses to eat the allied champion Shinto; only after Shinto sacrifices himself does Chris accept the body, inherit its black flames, and use the new speed and power to secure Unzoku's blood rather than pursue an impossible victory. (Chapters 2393–2417 and 2464–2520)
Chris carries that choice into the final defence. He helps deliver the demon kings' blood, joins the combined attack that delays Unzoku, and uses Qi platforms to rescue exhausted allies during the return through the portal. At the vampire settlement he consumes a lesser werewolf to restore bodily energy, then strikes invading ships sideways so their debris will not crush civilians below. He continues fighting demons and Divine beings until Quinn defeats Immortui. The resulting change removes the alterations in Chris's blood; the corpus does not separately demonstrate whether any acquired black-flame trait survives. One year later he is alive among Quinn's friends, able for the first time to enjoy their company without Pure, abusive military powers, or the old vampire conflict hanging over them. (Chapters 2524–2543)
Appearance and personality
Chris is introduced as a large, muscular, middle-aged man with wild red hair and a body covered in scars. He often removes or avoids a shirt while fighting and dislikes wearing Pure's long white Agent One coat, although the number on it makes his rank unmistakable when he does. His paired blades are carried at his sides or back, and his deliberately trained body remains imposing even when supernatural energy is exhausted. In full werewolf form he grows to roughly nine feet, develops an elongated muzzle, claws, grey fur, and luminous eyes; fourth-stage Qi turns that fur red. After Immortui's defeat, he notices that the alterations in his blood are gone. (Chapters 780, 792, 952, 1080–1082, 1387, 1824, 1958, and 2541)
He is blunt, competitive, physically restless, and fond of testing strong opponents, but his best decisions usually come from recognising that combat serves a purpose beyond proving strength. He teaches patiently, shares credit, and can trust a former opponent with a finishing strike. Conversely, impatience and confidence make him vulnerable to assumptions, traps, and stronger authorities who frame obedience as family. His long development is not a simple transfer of loyalty from Zero to Quinn; it is the slower decision to judge orders against the people they harm and to choose when his strength will be used. (Chapters 781–805, 1081–1084, 1453–1455, 1846–1869, and 2363–2365)
Chris also carries guilt intensely. He remains attached to Zero after deciding to oppose him, grieves Leo, condemns himself for considering escape or feeding on innocents, and feels used after both Pure and the altered-memory regime. That shame can drive reckless attempts to become stronger, especially in the Red Space, but he repeatedly returns to protective constraints: spare civilians, preserve allies, obtain the blood rather than win for pride, and keep the mission focused on Quinn and the threatened worlds. (Chapters 1847–1864, 1913–1916, 1964–1982, 2300, 2363, 2412–2417, and 2464–2533)
Powers and abilities
Chris is one of the corpus's most advanced human Qi practitioners and a highly trained close-combat fighter. His later werewolf body magnifies that base rather than replacing it, and his fourth-stage Qi can be layered onto either human or transformed combat. Those alterations disappear after Immortui's defeat, leaving Chris alive; continued Qi use is plausible from his original human training but is not demonstrated in the brief post-war scene. (Chapters 780–805, 1080–1083, 1868–1873, 1953–1958, 2401–2417, and 2541–2543)
Martial skill and combat judgment
Chris has trained his body beyond ordinary human limits and fights with practiced striking, grappling, weapon control, and energy sensing. He reads an opponent's distribution of Qi, notices unfamiliar power sources, and adapts between direct exchanges and internal attacks. Representative uses include correcting Quinn's posture by sensing his flow, warning Leo that Dred deliberately trapped the segmented blades, planning to exhaust Zero's reserve, and reading changes in the Red Space's ambient energy before Unzoku attacks. His judgment is not infallible: Hilston's hidden advantages, Zero's suspended homing strikes, and Unzoku's deliberate restraint all punish Chris for assuming that an observed limit is the true one. (Chapters 782, 789–805, 1081–1082, 1953–1955, and 2406–2413)
First, second, and third stages of Qi
The first stage circulates Qi within the body or infuses it into an object. Chris uses it to reinforce strength, durability, sight, healing, claws, and weapons. His training method deliberately reduces reliance on reinforcement while building the underlying muscle, which is why his body remains formidable even when energy is low. In werewolf form he favours internal first-stage reinforcement because it strengthens the body's natural durability and recovery rather than spending the same reserve on an outer barrier. (Chapters 782, 789–791, 798, 1453, and 1954–1955)
The second stage projects Qi as a coat around the body or a weapon. Chris can maintain a very thin full-body layer, but in serious exchanges he moves a denser concentration to the expected point of contact. This protects him from surface and internal damage, adds force to claws and blades, and interferes with a target's life force so wounds such as the crab's severed limbs do not regenerate normally. The resource is finite: coating everything thickly is inefficient, stronger Qi can break through it, and moving protection toward one threat leaves other areas comparatively exposed. (Chapters 782, 789–805, 1080–1082, and 1953–1955)
The third stage releases and controls Qi outside the body. Chris uses invisible force to knock aside the crab's claw, steer the segments and trajectory of his linked weapons, project internal-force strikes without direct contact, and spread a lethal command through the floor against a group of Pure combatants. Later he creates firm platforms in midair, letting him redirect momentum without depending on ground that may collapse under his strength. These constructs enable his rapid pouncing style against demon kings, but they do not erase the speed, timing, or energy needed to avoid an attack. (Chapters 794, 1081–1082, 1868, 2402, 2412, 2466, and 2487)
Fourth-stage Qi and agent techniques
Pure's fourth stage is a trained release of the latent soul-weapon energy retained by people who never acquired an ability. Chris can use that reserve to reinforce his existing Qi so that ordinary punches and kicks transmit devastating internal force. His weapons or transformed fur turn red while it is active, and the combined red-werewolf state greatly increases speed and power. The cost is severe: the reserve burns quickly, extended use begins consuming life energy, and repeated transformation places heavy strain on his body. Even at its peak it does not make him invulnerable; Zero defeats the state with accumulated Qi and a borrowed form, while Unzoku remains physically superior. (Chapters 952, 1081–1083, 1955–1958, 2259, 2410–2413, and 2466)
Chris also knows Qi transfer and Qi drain. He gives Quinn part of his naturally replenishing reserve, later draws limited Qi from Pure subordinates so he can walk, and acknowledges having used life-stealing methods taught by Zero. Transfer cannot safely exceed what the giver can spare, while drain creates an explicit moral and physical cost for the victim. His later rejection of feeding on the Chrono is tied to his refusal to repeat that history. The mass floor strike and one-at-a-time incapacitation of former agents further show precise third-stage control, but the corpus does not attribute Zero's unavoidable-target ability to Chris. (Chapters 780, 1083, 1868–1869, and 2417)
Segmented blades and other combat equipment
Chris's early signature weapons are two thick blades made from linked, toothed segments. Qi lets him unlock the links, extend the blades like chains, alter their paths after a swing, retract himself toward an attached target, and combine their wounds with second-stage regeneration disruption. Chris believes Zero gave him demon-tier weapons, but Quinn's inspection identifies them as demi-god tier; Chris did not kill the source beast and refuses to name the giver. Their passive reinforcement helps him match stronger bodies, but Hilston's equipment outclasses them. During the Dred battle, Chris throws the pair to Leo for the finishing cut. (Chapters 780–782, 790–798, and 1081–1083)
In the Red Space, Chris uses demon-tier armour made with help from Logan and the Graylash side. Its active effect phases him through an incoming attack, but activation has a slight delay, so Chris must sense the opponent's energy before the strike rather than react after impact. Unzoku chains attacks faster than the effect can cover and destroys the armour beyond repair. Later scenes mention flexible armour that accommodates transformation, but no separately catalogued item is assigned to Chris in the supplied manifest. (Chapters 2226, 2408, and 2410–2413)
Werewolf forms and recovery
Zero's experiment places werewolf DNA in Chris without telling him its provenance. The alteration allows partial transformation, a powerful upright werewolf form, and a giant quadrupedal wolf form. The upright form maximises strength, claws, healing, and close combat; the wolf form sacrifices strength and versatility for greater speed and can carry several riders. Chris can shift between them tactically, though transformations and sustained full-power combat consume energy. His resilience heals deep cuts, internal injuries, poison, and damage that would kill an ordinary human, but repeated high-tier attacks can outpace recovery and leave him unable to move. (Chapters 1863, 1868–1873, 1909–1913, 1953–1982, 2247, and 2259)
Chris's shapeshifter class receives a rising boost when other werewolves are nearby, a trait Unzoku identifies in the Red Space. His senses become sharper, his body lighter, and his strength climbs among the Glutton-class pack. In the red fourth-stage form, an instinctive howl temporarily freezes Zero and projected nail-like attacks penetrate the latter's barrier; the corpus does not show Chris deliberately reproducing that immobilisation. Enhanced smell and hearing also let him track energy-bearing targets and detect Quinn's returning heartbeat, but scent can be confused or suppressed by unfamiliar powers. (Chapters 1916, 1958, 2401, 2406–2410, and 2526)
Werewolves grow by consuming strong bodies. Chris initially refuses to prey on innocents, later eats enemy demons to restore energy and increase physical power, and gains a much larger increase from Bisha. Consuming Shinto after the champion's voluntary death also passes on black flames that adhere to targets and do not extinguish normally. This growth has limits: eating replenishes bodily energy but does not refill Chris's spent Qi, Shinto's power still leaves him below Unzoku in raw force, and hunger threatens his judgment. The alterations disappear when Immortui is defeated, and the corpus does not confirm any werewolf form, consumption growth, or black-flame use afterward. (Chapters 2412–2417, 2456–2467, 2485–2520, 2532, and 2541)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced three-stage Qi | 780–805 | Enters with elite internal reinforcement, external coating, projected force, energy sensing, and segmented-blade control developed through Pure. |
| Fourth-stage Qi | 952–1083 | Releases latent soul-weapon energy to amplify ordinary strikes and Qi, but extended use burns the reserve and eventually life energy. |
| Werewolf alteration revealed | 1863–1873 | Zero's concealed DNA experiment enables partial, upright, and giant quadrupedal transformations that magnify Chris's existing training. |
| Red fourth-stage werewolf | 1955–1958 | Temporarily layers fourth-stage Qi over the transformed body for a major speed and power increase with severe bodily strain. |
| Shinto's black flames inherited | 2485–2520 | Consuming the voluntarily dead champion passes on persistent black fire, still insufficient by itself to match Unzoku's raw strength. |
| Werewolf powers removed | 2541–2543 | Immortui's death strips the alteration and consumption-derived powers; Chris survives, while post-war Qi use is not shown. |
Relationships
- Quinn: Chris begins as Quinn's Qi teacher and becomes proud of his rapid progress before faction allegiance places them on opposite sides. They fight through misunderstanding more than once, but Quinn returns Chris's stolen Qi and Chris later enters the Red Space to support him. Chris's final loyalty is expressed as chosen aid, not subordination. (Chapters 780–806, 840, 1371, 1846, 1870–1878, 1977–1985, 2258–2301, and 2363–2543)
- Zero: Zero rescues and raises Chris, becoming a father figure while withholding the praise Chris seeks. He trains Chris to kill Leo, turns him into Pure's sword, and subjects him to werewolf experimentation. Chris remains emotionally attached even after deciding that Zero's alliance with Erin, exploitation of slaves, and service to another power have made opposition necessary. Their final duel leaves Chris defeated but forces Zero to expend substantial power before Erin kills him. (Chapters 952, 1083, 1387–1455, 1824–1864, and 1943–1982)
- Leo: Leo is initially the target for whom Chris was raised. Fighting together against Dred lets each judge the other directly: Chris entrusts Leo with his blades, Leo refuses to execute him and saves him from assassination, and Chris eventually describes Leo as a friend. Leo's death and Zero's alliance with Erin become decisive reasons for Chris's break with Pure. (Chapters 1076–1084 and 1845–1863)
- Peter: Peter becomes Chris's principal combat partner after the fall of Pure. Chris uses wolf-form speed to deliver Peter's attacks against Hinto, while Peter's blunt commitment to Quinn reinforces Chris's new direction. They later share altered memories, fight for Jim, recover together, and join the demon-world mission. Their partnership combines Peter's relentless offence with Chris's movement, sensing, and tactical restraint. (Chapters 1870–1916, 1943–1985, 2098–2301, and 2359–2543)
- Muka and Logan: Muka tests Chris's proposed defection rather than accepting it on sentiment, then joins the attack on Pure after he provides verifiable details. Logan helps coordinate the alliance, receives Chris's promised reports, restores former Pure supporters to civil life, and later assists with Chris's armour. Both relationships give Chris a path to oppose Zero without asking them to deny his past. (Chapters 1845–1878, 1928, 1977–2003, and 2410)
- Edvard: Edvard becomes Chris's closest partner during the Yak campaign. Each initially underestimates part of the other's strength, but they learn to trust complementary timing against Bisha. Edvard accepts Chris's need to grow, warns against reckless feeding, and preserves the demon king's blood for Quinn while Chris consumes enough flesh to continue the mission. (Chapters 2456–2488)
- Shinto: Chris's history with Hinto initially makes Shinto an enemy, but the champion later chooses to help the group and sacrifices himself when Unzoku becomes overwhelming. Chris refuses to kill or consume him while he lives, then accepts the freely given sacrifice and carries Shinto's black flames into the attempt to obtain Unzoku's blood. (Chapters 2395–2415 and 2470–2520)
Items
No separately catalogued item is assigned to Chris in the supplied item manifest. His paired segmented blades and the destroyed phasing armour are covered under Powers and abilities because they materially shape his combat style, but neither has a generated item page. (Chapters 780–798, 1081–1083, and 2410–2413)
