Russ

Russ Chain is the calculating leader of the Chained, a faction built from ability users once exploited by the Blade family. His God Slayer power turns mental images into copied abilities, transformations, and summons, making him a dangerous enemy at the forced wedding of Jessica Clark and later an indispensable but mistrusted member of Quinn's coalition against Immortui. Biography

The Chained Wedding and Defeat by Quinn

Russ presents the Chained wedding as proof that former captives can stand beside the world's great factions. He publicly claims that the Blade family imprisoned him from birth and that fellow captives taught him how to survive, but his larger revenge narrative is not fully reliable: Bliss later calls much of his story bogus and specifically rejects his claimed devotion to a woman he never knew. What is clear in the wedding itself is that Russ uses Jessica as leverage, demands recognition from the Blades, and treats consent as subordinate to his political display. When Quinn attempts a rescue, Russ relies on the Chained's complementary abilities and on an unlimited external supply of MC cells. He copies Quinn's blood and shadow techniques, creates attacks on the scale Russ believes Quinn can withstand, and summons the two-headed Dragon from Quinn's memory. Quinn repeatedly exceeds the image Russ formed of him, however, and the supporting energy disappears when its provider is killed. Russ loses both the wedding and the faction's public legitimacy, then survives in hiding under the name Dean. (Chapters 1676–1688 and 1902)

Nest Crystals and a Compelled Alliance

Bliss restores Russ's path to power by teaching him to absorb nest crystals, which enlarge the MC-cell reserve that constrains every major use of his ability. Russ becomes a Traveller, steals crystals from factions that discover them, and retreats when his behaviour attracts too much attention. His first fight with the celestial Weet confirms both his potential and his limit: his copied attack can exceed Weet's own because Weet imagines himself as overwhelmingly powerful, but Russ cannot sustain the cost and chooses to flee. Quinn ultimately saves him and later confines him in shadow space. (Chapters 1902–1904, 1926–1927, and 1936–1938)

Quinn releases Russ only after imposing a Qi command requiring him to protect Layla and not harm the Blade family. Russ looks for loopholes and regards the command as coercion, but it places him beside people he would otherwise exploit. When altered history erases memories of Quinn and Layla, Russ remains one of the few who remembers both, possibly because his God Slayer power is mind-related; the text leaves the exact cause uncertain. His self-interest persists, yet continued danger turns the compelled arrangement into practical cooperation. (Chapters 1992, 2002–2009, and 2120–2121)

From Tournament Rival to Coalition Weapon

Russ absorbs further nest crystals and tests his expanded ability in the Penswi tournament, copying Stark's body and speed from Stark's own self-image. He helps Quinn investigate possible transformations and admits that reproducing Quinn at full power still exceeds his reserve. Against the Blades and the Dalki, Russ uses memories in the people around him to access shadow, Penswi speed, Dalki bodies, and summoned fighters, but must continually judge whether the necessary construct will leave enough MC cells to escape. Fighting Pine forces Russ to use that adaptability for a collective goal rather than a factional grudge. He copies Pine's energy absorption and returns the stored attack, helping defeat an opponent whose strength would overwhelm a conventional ability user. Even so, he openly states that travelling with Quinn has not made him a good person; his willingness to kill and his impatience with restraint remain sources of conflict with the group. The Expedition against Immortui

Russ joins the expedition into Immortui's world because survival and the threat to his own world align with Quinn's mission. Knowing that a poor summon can exhaust him, he studies opponents, draws constructs from allies' memories, and works tactically from concealment rather than spending all his power at the first opportunity. He summons figures such as Hinto and the Black Swordsman, copies fire and teleportation when needed, and helps obtain demon blood while stronger allies hold the main enemies. After Immortui's defeat removes vampire and subclass powers, Russ's human ability remains intact. His immediate reaction is to imagine that Quinn, the vampires, and a weakened Sil have left him the strongest person in the world. Quinn's return checks that ambition, but the ending deliberately leaves Russ alive, powerful, and still governed more by opportunity than moral reform. (Chapter 2541)

Appearance and personality

Russ is a lean man with long, straight blond hair reaching to his waist. At the wedding he goes shirtless, revealing black chain tattoos across his back and chest and a heart motif locked beneath them. His attempted smile leaves his eyes emotionless, matching a personality that is controlled, proud, manipulative, and highly conscious of status. He is also adaptive and candid about his selfishness: danger can make him cooperate, but it does not erase his impatience, violent pragmatism, or delight in possessing an advantage others lack. Powers and abilities

Russ possesses a God Slayer ability tied to imagination and mental representation. It can copy powers, reshape his body, or materialise beings drawn from another mind, but every result depends on what the subject believes and on Russ's available MC cells. The flexibility is enormous; the resource cost and imperfect source image prevent it from being unlimited. (Chapters 1681–1688, 1904, 2121, 2148, and 2230)

Mental-image replication

Russ can reach into a nearby mind and reproduce an ability the subject knows. Copying a power is cheaper than copying a form or summoning a separate being, but Russ must have seen the technique used before if he wants to operate it accurately. He reproduces blood weapons, shadow barriers and travel, fire, teleportation, and Pine's energy absorption. The copied result reflects belief as much as fact: a subject who underestimates themselves gives Russ a weaker version, while a proud enemy can cause the copy to exceed the original's expectation. Transformations and summons

Russ can transform parts or all of his body according to an image, such as forming Penswi legs for speed, taking a Dalki body, or accurately copying Stark's physique. He can also summon independent constructs, including Dalki, the two-headed Dragon, and figures remembered by celestials or champions. A summon can fight while Russ hides, and Russ can dismiss it, but stronger or more vividly idealised beings cost far more. Layla's image of Quinn is so powerful that Russ cannot summon him even briefly, and some entities in a celestial mind expel Russ before he can form them. MC-cell limits and progression

Russ initially maintains extreme output only because another person continuously supplies MC cells. Once that support dies, his reserve collapses. Nest crystals permanently increase his available MC cells, letting him sustain stronger copies and summons, but estimating cost remains difficult because it depends on another person's mental image. Using a construct that is too strong can leave him unable to fight or teleport away, so he often selects the weakest image sufficient for a task and keeps an escape reserve. Shadow space also appears to suppress or deny the ability, although the corpus does not establish the exact mechanism. (Chapters 1688, 1902–1904, 1938, 2140–2148, 2177, 2230, and 2397)

God Slayer bracelet

Alex forges Russ a bracelet from Pine's God Slayer crystal. The bracelet absorbs ability attacks through the hand on which it is worn, can repel the stored force as raw energy, and can convert absorbed energy into MC cells. This directly addresses Russ's principal limitation, but only for attacks caught through the bracelet-bearing hand; it does not grant general immunity. Russ uses it to stop a demon king's attack and preserve enough power for summons and escape. (Chapters 2367–2368 and 2491)

Tactical deception

Russ hides his true body while a summon fights, copies stealth and movement abilities to infiltrate, and chooses targets according to the cost of defeating them. His reliance on other minds makes teams valuable sources of techniques, while his secrecy makes allies reluctant to let him examine their strongest memories. His sword skill without a summoned expert is explicitly limited, so the Black Swordsman is effective because the construct supplies mastery Russ himself lacks. • Quinn: Russ begins as Quinn's enemy and is defeated when Quinn exceeds the limits of Russ's imagination. Quinn later saves, confines, and coerces him into protecting others; their alliance becomes effective without becoming trusting. (Chapters 1676–1688, 1904, 1927–1938, 1992, and 2541)
• Jessica: Russ forces Jessica into a public wedding to further his status and draw out enemies. Her fear and lack of consent expose the Chained's claimed liberation as selective, and her rescue precipitates Russ's fall. (Chapters 1661, 1668–1676, and 1688)
• Bliss: Bliss gives Russ the crystal that awakens his God Slayer potential, arranges the power supply used at the wedding, and teaches him to absorb nest crystals. Russ recognises that she uses him for her own plans even while depending on her knowledge. (Chapters 1688 and 1902)
• Layla: Quinn's Qi command compels Russ to protect Layla, creating a resentful partnership. Her memories give him access to Quinn's shadow techniques, while her distrust keeps his growing power under scrutiny. (Chapters 1992, 2002–2009, 2121, and 2170)
