Owen

Owen Graylash is the youngest head of the Graylash family and a lightning specialist whose confidence masks both political isolation and a sustained concern for his people. He modernises his family's training, allies with the other major powers during the Dalki war, and leaves a legacy of human-vampire coexistence before dying in an attack whose full circumstances are never shown. (Chapters 309, 384, 730–798, 1088–1094, 1706, and 2343–2344)

Biography

A Young Head Preparing for Change

Owen takes the Graylash seat after his predecessor's decline and immediately faces dismissal because he appears barely older than an academy graduate. He answers the insult with open confidence, naming himself the family's youngest and most powerful head, yet his later conduct shows that this is more than vanity. Lonely in the Graylash palace and impatient with inherited custom, he shares improved lightning techniques with the next generation because he believes a major crisis is approaching and preparation matters more than protecting tradition. (Chapters 309 and 384)

At the Inter-Base Tournament, Owen watches unusual competitors closely and identifies talent that the older leaders overlook. He recognises that Quinn is concealing far more strength than his public ability rating suggests and takes an interest in the Cursed faction's rise. Rather than treating a new power as an automatic threat, he predicts that Quinn's organisation may become one of the principal factions, positioning Graylash to negotiate with it while other leaders remain sceptical. Alliance and Political Responsibility

As conflict between the human powers intensifies, Owen uses Graylash influence to support cooperation with Oscar and the Cursed faction. He helps organise the transition away from the old power structure and accepts the risks of confronting the Bree group rather than preserving a comfortable stalemate. His theatrical manner and willingness to provoke rivals remain, but decisions increasingly focus on keeping the Graylash people relevant and protected during a war no family can survive alone. The Dalki war turns that political duty into personal combat. When Green Horn attacks his forces, Owen uses his storm soul weapon despite knowing its breath-linked sequence is exhausting and finite. He could prioritise escape, but repeatedly returns to aid followers and spends nearly the full technique trying to stop the Dalki. Green Horn survives, while Owen and his people emerge depleted; the encounter demonstrates both his ability to contend with an exceptional enemy and the cost of making himself the shield for an entire family. Genbu and the Dalki War

Owen seeks additional strength rather than relying only on his inherited status. With assistance from Leo and Layla, he develops Qi and earns a contract with Genbu, a familiar king whose defensive power complements Graylash lightning. On a rainy world that favours his ability, Owen destroys a Dalki camp with Genbu's support, while later operations show him using wide electrical currents, his segmented fan, and coordinated restraints against beasts and Dalki. (Chapters 1271, 1473–1483, and 1523–1527)

The war leaves the Graylash forces heavily strained, but Owen continues fighting beside the alliance through the confrontation with Graham. His contribution is not limited to destruction: Genbu's shell protects allied fighters, and Owen's electrical control helps define battle space for others. This combination of ruler, attacker, and defensive contractor becomes the foundation of the heroic legacy later attached to his reign. (Chapters 1514–1593)

Coexistence, Murder, and an Unresolved History

After the war, Owen works with Genbu during a reign remembered for bringing humans and vampires closer together. Graylash society honours both of them with statues, suggesting that coexistence rather than conquest becomes the public measure of his leadership. Later accounts initially describe Owen as having died naturally, but other testimony calls his death a murder, and Quinn receives a quest to identify the person behind it. (Chapters 1693–1706, 1794, and 2343)

Evidence uncovered much later complicates the event without fully reconstructing it. Erin had her memories altered before a series of attacks and acquired Genbu and Ovinnik from Owen and Leo during that period; Quinn's quest is completed after Erin's death. This establishes her connection to Owen's death, but the corpus does not narrate the confrontation or explain precisely how Owen was killed, so the method and complete responsibility remain unresolved. Appearance and personality

Owen appears to be in his early twenties, with long hair that he idly plays with and a folding fan commonly held over the lower half of his face. His expressions are often read through his eyes: crescent-shaped eyes above the fan signal amusement. He is confident, provocative, observant, and fond of theatrical presentation, yet his loneliness in the palace and willingness to change Graylash tradition reveal a more reflective leader who seeks connection and prepares seriously for danger. Powers and abilities

Owen combines the Graylash lightning ability with specialised movement, a storm-generating soul weapon, Qi, and a familiar contract. His strongest techniques have explicit environmental and stamina constraints, so his combat style depends on timing and on using Genbu or allies to cover what lightning alone cannot. (Chapters 1088–1094, 1271, 1473–1483, and 1523)

Graylash lightning

Owen generates and controls electricity for ranged attacks, body reinforcement, movement, and broad area denial. He can send current through the ground to kill or paralyse groups, although sufficiently resistant targets endure it, and rainy or cloud-heavy conditions increase the natural electricity available to his attacks. He also transforms into lightning to cross a battlefield and reappear at a strike point, making conventional pursuit difficult. (Chapters 384, 1088, 1271, and 1473)

His metal fan is integrated into this control. Owen can split it into roughly twelve pieces, direct them electrically, and arrange them as a moving fence or arena around an enemy. The fragments extend his reach and restrict movement, but they do not substitute for the raw power required against the strongest Dalki. (Chapters 1523–1527)

Storm soul weapon

Owen activates his soul weapon by casting a lightning sphere overhead and piercing it with his fan, generating storm clouds above the battlefield. Each controlled breath can call a lightning strike, and Owen can move through the resulting bolts as living lightning to attack from changing positions. Against Green Horn, he estimates that he can maintain control for about twenty strikes; as the count rises, breathing becomes harder, accuracy and control threaten to fail, and the technique leaves him exhausted. The Dalki's survival shows that even the full sequence is not guaranteed to finish a highly durable opponent. (Chapters 1088–1094)

Qi

Owen possesses strong potential for Qi and trains it with guidance connected to Leo and Layla. Qi reinforces his already powerful body and attacks and helps qualify him for Genbu's test, but his mastery is developed later than his family ability. The corpus shows practical growth rather than a complete catalogue of named Qi techniques. (Chapters 1403–1405 and 1478–1481)

Contract with Genbu

Genbu is a familiar king rather than Owen's possession. Their contract links Owen to a purple turtle whose nearly impenetrable shell can protect the contractor and allied fighters, while the familiar world feeds on energy such as Qi through the bond. Genbu's defence can still be broken by overwhelming force—Graham cracks and shatters the shell—and a dismissed familiar requires time before it can be summoned again. Genbu nevertheless remains Owen's defining defensive partner through the Dalki war and his later reign. (Chapters 1481, 1561, 2343–2344)

Leadership and instruction

Owen is a perceptive talent scout and reform-minded teacher. He recognises concealed strength in Quinn and Silver, distributes improved techniques instead of reserving them for elders, and uses political alliances to keep Graylash from becoming isolated. His confidence sometimes makes him confrontational, but it also lets him challenge entrenched assumptions that had slowed his family's development. (Chapters 309–384 and 730–798)
