Charles

Charles is the Cult of Ascension's vice-master, strongest active commander, and mentor to its emerging Dragons. A peak Monarch who cannot obtain the resources needed to attempt Demi-God advancement, he converts experience into training, battlefield doctrine, and a final defense that preserves the Cult's succession after his death.

Biography

Commander and maker of Dragons

Charles first appears overseeing an under-resourced military network spread across thirty-two worlds and Ixtal, accustomed to making limited personnel and equipment serve a war the Cult cannot postpone. His relationship with Soron has been strained by a seven-year quarrel over the Cult's future, but Soron still chooses him to mentor Leo after the Zhanrok mark draws divine danger. Charles accepts without romanticizing the assignment. He abducts and tests Leo Skyshard, uses legal and political openings to keep him out of the Elder Council's control, and rebuilds his basics through punishing drills before treating his unusual talents as assets. (Chapters 326 and 404–436)

The training becomes personal without becoming gentle. Charles separates Leo from Dumpy so each must develop rather than rely on the other, spars hard enough to expose weaknesses, and demonstrates that visible killing intent has shades and meanings rather than a single color-coded answer. Their shared cigarettes become a mentor-student ritual, while Charles's bluntness prevents warmth from turning into indulgence. Watching Leo and Aegon Veyr fight, he recognizes that Leo deliberately approaches death to force growth. When Soron names Leo Shadow Dragon under Charles, Charles criticizes the burden being placed on him but accepts responsibility for turning raw survival instinct into disciplined command. Charles expands that discipline beyond dueling. He trains Dumpy as a protector, identifies Dupravel Nuna beneath a false identity by reading aura, and teaches Leo that war is sustained by logistics, morale, civilian behavior, urban terrain, and the stories soldiers use to endure what they have done. His explanation of “no mercy” is descriptive rather than celebratory: he wants Leo to understand why armies create moral narratives and how commanders must manage the consequences. During the Koral operation he refines Leo and Veyr's plan through deliberate misinformation about Nemo and controlled leaks, showing them that a successful campaign can depend on what the enemy believes before the first exchange of force. When Leo's growing soul begins to exceed what his body can safely contain, Charles recognizes the crisis as more than emotional instability and brings him to Soron. He helps Leo complete the intent work that makes him the second master of the Sevenfold Revelation Codex, then assists in securing the Transcendent potion required for bodily progression. Charles also receives the Origin Metal from Chaosbringer and delivers it to Soron rather than treating custody as personal leverage. Soron subsequently appoints him acting Cult Master. Charles accepts because the expedition requires a trustworthy center at home, even though both men understand that Soron's absence may expose the Cult to attack. (Chapters 594–621)

Last command and enduring counsel

Mauriss exploits Soron's absence by testing Juxta with specialists whose Intent Concealment Potion neutralizes Charles's usual aura reading. Charles responds by studying muscle tension, breathing, and stance, proving that his perception training has not replaced physical observation. He delays Entrail and Streak until the planetary shield seals them inside, then kills both through superior offense. The victory does not remove the greater threat: Charles knows Raymond is secretly a Demi-God and preserves one of Soron's stored aura orbs for that confrontation. He also begins Leo's study of the Emperor's Suppression Manual by describing effects witnessed during years of sparring with Soron, while openly admitting he never mastered its advanced execution. After the first assault, Charles explains both the social scars of war and his own stalled progression. He has carried the Strongest Monarch reputation for roughly a century, but neither reputation nor technique can substitute for the materials needed to attempt the next realm. The Demi-God Breakthrough Potion requires resources the Cult no longer controls, including Granada water, Pit soil, and Moonshine Flower; even with appropriate aura and intent mastery, the attempt kills about seventy percent of candidates. Charles does not know whether his bloodline would succeed and never possesses or consumes a completed potion. He therefore invests in successors instead of pretending his ceiling can be crossed by will alone. (Chapters 677–689)

When two hundred thousand enemy ships approach Juxta, Charles recognizes that the base cannot be held and converts defense into continuity. He activates Leo's Ghost Protocol, appoints Leo temporary Sect Master, evacuates relics, blueprints, medicine, and personnel, and broadcasts the truth about Soron's absence rather than allowing rumor to collapse morale. He sends Dumpy away with repaired blades, a letter, and a remaining divine-aura orb because the next generation's survival matters more than one additional fighter at Juxta. These choices make his last stand a command decision rather than a search for martyrdom: he spends the strongest remaining defender to buy movement, legitimacy, and institutional memory for those who can escape. Charles destroys ships and enemy formations at extraordinary range, kills two Monarchs in under a minute, and then confronts Raymond. Intent perception shows him attack lines, but prediction cannot erase a Demi-God's advantage in raw force and regeneration. Charles expends Soron's final aura orb to immobilize Raymond and combines Hyperspeed with Crown Fall at the neck; Raymond's training and recovery turn a near-decisive strike into a failed execution. Exhausted and dismembered, Charles refuses to betray the Cult before Raymond decapitates him. His final letter later releases Soron from blame, praises Leo and Veyr, and identifies Helmuth as the alliance's stabilizing target. Even later, Leo's warning not to trust intent blindly—training Veyr lacked—shows Charles's practical skepticism surviving in his student's methods. (Chapters 699–707, 824–825, and 1129)

Appearance and personality

Charles has reptilian scales along his arms, clawed fingers, rugged skin, weathered eyes, and a scar above his right eyebrow. He is commonly presented in military clothing or a coat bearing the Cult's crimson emblem, often with a cigarette in hand. His posture and expression are recognizable enough for Leo's Shapeshift to reproduce them as a convincing imitation, including Charles's deadpan stare and drawling voice. The cigarette habit persists into danger and private conversation, functioning as both a personal comfort and a ritual he shares with Leo. (Chapters 326, 438, 504, 615, and 678)

His manner is blunt, profane, dryly humorous, and impatient with empty ceremony, but the harshness serves a protective ethic rather than simple cruelty. Charles expects soldiers to understand consequences, safeguards civilians and institutional continuity, and refuses to conceal a hopeless military situation behind comforting lies. He can quarrel with Soron for years and still act as his only true friend, criticize Leo while entrusting him with the Cult, and send Dumpy away despite wanting every possible defender. His loyalty is expressed through preparation: he tries to leave people capable of acting correctly when he is no longer present to issue orders. (Chapters 404–405, 503–511, 693–695, and 824–825)

Abilities and power progression

Charles reaches the peak of the Monarch tier and is regarded as the Strongest Monarch for about a century. His growth is demonstrated through mastery and breadth rather than a later realm breakthrough: he combines mana, regeneration, intent perception, sword techniques, battlefield reading, and command experience, then transmits those skills to successors. The absent Demi-God potion, uncertain bloodline compatibility, and lethal breakthrough rate form a hard progression limit. His latest state is death at Raymond's hands without ever becoming a Demi-God.

Monarch physiology, mana, and advancement ceiling

At Monarch tier, Charles possesses extreme speed, strength, mana output, and regeneration sufficient to keep fighting after severe wounds. Recovery is not free: replacing damaged tissue consumes large amounts of mana, so sustained pressure and repeated restoration reduce the resources available for offense. His century at the peak does not automatically produce divinity. A Demi-God attempt requires a finished breakthrough potion, mature aura and intent, compatible potential, and survival of a process that kills most candidates. The Cult lacks the ingredients, and Charles cannot even confirm that his genetics would permit success. Against Raymond, the tier difference remains decisive despite Charles's technique, preparation, and temporary use of borrowed divine pressure. (Chapters 632–678 and 699–704)

Intent, aura, and perceptual counters

Charles perceives killing intent as directional lines and distinguishes shades that reveal why an opponent wants to kill, not merely that violence is coming. His own intent can suppress same-tier enemies, while his reading supports rapid identification, prediction, and instruction. The mechanism has explicit counters. An Intent Concealment Potion hides the signal, forcing him to infer attacks from breath, stance, and muscular preparation; a skilled opponent can also make visible intent diverge from the real strike. Charles therefore teaches Leo to use intent as evidence rather than certainty. The lesson's value is shown much later when Veyr, lacking the same warning, briefly freezes against deceptive red lines. Sword techniques and battlefield offense

Charles's combat style is fundamentally offensive despite his ability to endure. His demonstrated repertoire includes Mountain Splitting Slash, Absolute Destruction, Heaven Sundering Reversal, Thundering End, Hyperspeed, and Crown Fall. He can send ranged cuts through massed ships and troops, eliminate Monarch opponents rapidly, and combine movement with a concentrated execution strike. These techniques scale through mana and precision rather than guaranteeing victory by name: coordinated specialists can force regeneration costs, concealed intent can deny advance warning, and a Demi-God can survive or deflect an attack that would finish a Monarch. His failed neck strike against Raymond is the representative limit—correctly timed and amplified, yet insufficient against superior recovery and raw force. (Chapters 632–655, 689, and 699–704)

Command, training, and borrowed divine force

Charles's non-magical competencies are central to his power: he organizes multi-world forces, controls misinformation, reads morale, preserves logistics, and designs training that isolates weaknesses instead of flattering talent. He can teach from observation even when he cannot reproduce a technique, as with the Emperor's Suppression Manual. Soron's divine-aura orbs temporarily extend his options but are stored assets, not innate power. Charles saves one for Raymond, sends another with the evacuees, and uses the last combat orb to paralyze the Demi-God only briefly. The interaction creates an opening for Crown Fall but does not grant God-level durability, replenish Charles's mana, or prevent Raymond's regeneration from recovering the exchange. Relationships

• Leo Skyshard: Charles takes Leo from gifted assassin to commander by rebuilding his basics, teaching intent and war, and confronting the costs of leadership. His final appointment and evacuation plan make Leo the Cult's legitimate successor rather than merely its strongest survivor.
• Aegon Veyr: Charles observes and helps shape Veyr alongside Leo, refining operations that require both Dragons. His later technical legacy also exposes a difference between them: Veyr was not taught Charles's warning that readable intent can be deliberately false.
• Soron: Charles and Soron are estranged colleagues, commander and sovereign, and ultimately close friends. Soron entrusts him with the Cult during the Origin expedition; Charles's final letter absolves Soron and supplies the strategic advice that shapes Soron's last campaign.
• Dumpy: Charles subjects Dumpy to punishing protective training and earns the frog's fierce attachment. He sends Dumpy away before Juxta falls because preserving Leo's protector outweighs the short-term value of another combatant.
• Raymond: Charles recognizes Raymond's hidden Demi-God status and reserves Soron's aura orb for him. Their final duel proves both Charles's peak Monarch skill and the realm barrier he could never cross; Raymond survives the prepared execution and kills him.
• Chaosbringer: Charles receives the Origin Metal from Chaosbringer and personally carries it to Soron, serving as the reliable link between Leo's acquisition and the Cult Master's refinement mission.

• Emperor's Suppression Manual: Charles neither owns the manual nor masters its advanced technique. Because he has sparred with Soron for years, he can describe how Soron's aura crushes body and will and give Leo practical guidance for beginning the text.
• Demi-God Breakthrough Potion: The unavailable potion defines Charles's advancement ceiling. He explains its rare ingredients, prerequisite mastery, and roughly seventy-percent fatality rate, but never possesses or consumes a completed dose.
