Dupravel Nuna

Dupravel Nuna is the former Black Serpents Guildmaster and the Monarch who killed the Cult's previous Dragon, Noah Ashburn. The Cult's abduction of his son Darnell Nuna, the destruction of his guild, and a binding agreement with Leo Skyshard turn him from a principal enemy into a Cult commander whose eventual loyalty extends beyond the contract that first compelled it.

Biography

Guildmaster, father, and bound enemy

Dupravel enters the conflict as a celebrated Monarch, feared assassin, and master of the Black Serpents, but the Cult knows him primarily as the man who murdered Noah Ashburn and took the dead Dragon's scroll. His public composure breaks when Cult operatives abduct Darnell during the Circuits. Direct force cannot penetrate Ixtal or overcome Soron, so the proud guildmaster seeks Mauriss and offers servitude in exchange for his son's recovery. This choice establishes the pressure governing his later actions: he will surrender reputation, autonomy, and even dignity for Darnell, while remaining willing to inflict extreme violence on anyone standing between them. Mauriss's price draws Dupravel into a Time-Stilled World in pursuit of Origin Metal. More than four thousand subjective days in stagnant, corrupted mana leave him mentally and spiritually tainted, unstable enough that the Black Serpents' leadership and judgment begin to fail around him. The Universal Government then demands Noah's scroll, destroys Twin Fang when the guild refuses, executes Dupravel's officers, and places the scroll in government custody. Mauriss extracts the broken guildmaster, removes roughly seventy percent of the taint, and forces him to surrender the single Origin Metal slab stored in a mana-locked ring. Mauriss next suppresses Dupravel's strength to the Transcendent level so he can infiltrate Cult territory without Soron detecting a Monarch, then sends him to assassinate Veyr. Veyr's improved prediction, the Twelfth Elder's interference, and the deliberately delayed restoration prevent the kill and force Dupravel into hiding. Dupravel proposes and signs a twenty-year master-slave soul contract naming Leo as master and himself as slave. It obliges obedience, combat service, assassin instruction, truthful dealing, and conduct in Leo's interest, while protecting thirty days annually with Darnell and forbidding orders to kill himself or harm his son. Willful breach carries irreversible soul destruction, but their lives are not mutually linked; the life-bond is a public lie written into the agreement so Cult authorities will not execute Dupravel. Cult commander and father reconciled

Dupravel's initial service remains coercive, but repeated campaigns give it an institutional purpose beyond guarding Leo. He fights beside Su Pei, combining Su Pei's defense with poisoned blind-side attacks against Yu Day, and later follows Leo into the Time-Stilled refuge with Darnell as the Righteous conquest strips the Cult of its secure worlds. There he receives a unit of his own and rebuilds Black Serpent methods without restoring the old guild: he trains rogues, unconventional killers, and infiltrators for the war he expects. At the Pit, Dupravel fights as one of the Cult's independent operational pillars. He enters the Righteous rear alone, suppresses his aura, poisons units, kills command personnel, and shifts sectors before defenders can fix his location. The objective is disruption rather than a high body count: grenades, blind-angle dagger strikes, and sudden mana crescents make troops watch their own flanks and eventually attack allies in panic. During this battle he explicitly recognizes that the Cult has replaced the Black Serpents in his loyalties. Loss to the Righteous order has not made his enslavement voluntary in retrospect, but experience has made the organization he was forced to join into a cause he now chooses to defend. Years later, Dupravel remains among the Cult's strongest Monarchs, yet Darnell defeats him in a public tournament by denying him the space needed to dictate tempo and adapting faster in close exchanges. Dupravel responds with laughter, an embrace, and pride rather than resentment, confirming that his son's independent standing matters more to him than preserving paternal superiority. His latest recorded role is still active command: his fleet arrives on Satoru and integrates into the planet's defenses alongside the other Cult forces. Appearance and personality

Before his fall, Dupravel presents a controlled public image in tailored obsidian clothing and the all-black robes associated with the Black Serpents. His return from the Time-Stilled World leaves him hunched and feral, with wild matted hair, a ragged cloak, cracked lips, elongated nails, and skin he scratches compulsively under the taint's influence. After joining Leo, he adopts gray-and-blue assassin robes and a white mask as Viper. His dark eyes and unnaturally still posture remain recognizable to people familiar with his predatory bearing even when the new colors hide the obvious guild association. Dupravel is proud, ruthless, sarcastic, and comfortable with poison, deception, and civilian casualties when they serve an objective. He nevertheless understands professional respect and repays it: Charles's willingness to address the enslaved Monarch as a warrior matters to him, and Su Pei's concern for soldiers persuades him to support negotiation. His defining attachment is Darnell. It first makes him exploitable and willing to submit to Mauriss and Leo, then matures into open pride when Darnell surpasses him. Abilities and power progression

Dupravel is an established Monarch whose progression in the supplied corpus is shaped less by a new tier than by corruption, temporary suppression, restoration, and changes in how he deploys his skills. He begins as a feared solo assassin, returns from the Time-Stilled World psychologically damaged, fights Veyr while artificially limited to peak Transcendent strength, and regains full Monarch power over the following weeks. Monarch attributes, suppression, and taint

At full strength, Dupravel has Monarch-level speed, perception, mana output, flight, and physical force, enough to threaten other Monarchs and erase ordinary guards before they can organize. Time-Stilled corruption initially increases unstable power while degrading memory, reason, and self-control; Mauriss removes about seventy percent of the taint, not necessarily every trace. Mauriss later seals Dupravel at Transcendent strength and supplies a restoration potion whose delayed action creates a decisive vulnerability. During the Veyr ambush his shallow breathing, aching muscles, and reduced strike weight reveal the limitation, and prediction plus reinforcements force retreat. Stealth, movement, and perception

Dupravel suppresses his aura to a whisper, uses disguise and infiltration, crosses short distances through distorted space and black mist, and changes position quickly enough to make defenders infer multiple attackers. Veilstep Mirage produces five moving illusions, but it is not perfect concealment: Su Pei identifies the real body and broad gravity fields restrict Dupravel's mobility. His best defense is to avoid occupying the expected line of attack. Monarch perception lets him map hesitation and overcorrection in real time, while pre-mission reconnaissance lets him memorize routes and prepare exits. Dupravel fights with a curved short sword, paired daggers, thrown blades, glyphs, mines, vines, and poison chosen for the target. Fast paralytics can weaken a Monarch's muscles, Neo-Basilisk poison supports cooperative attacks, and grenades break formation through choking clouds and fear. He habitually prepares terrain rather than relying on a fair exchange: agility and mana-recovery potions, Crimson Snaproot, Explosion Glyphs, Piercing Lance Mines, and Veilstep illusions steer Su Pei along predicted paths. The two enhancement potions carry severe post-effect backlash, poison can be isolated by an opponent circulating mana, traps lose value when detected or erased by wide-area force, and Su Pei's Danger Intimidation makes a conventional ambush impractical. Operational command and combat limits

Dupravel specializes in killing high-value targets and destabilizing rear lines rather than holding a conventional front. At the Pit he uses poison, precision, rapid withdrawal, and false threat scale to make an entire sector distrust its own surroundings; in the Time-Stilled World he trains a modern rogue unit built around similar unconventional methods. He can also cooperate effectively when roles are clear, attacking around Su Pei's defense or selecting elite beasts while allies handle crowds. These competencies do not erase tier or style counters. Darnell defeats him by denying setup space and maintaining cleaner pressure, while the Veyr attack shows that even excellent technique cannot compensate indefinitely for suppressed attributes, multiple opponents, and a restoration effect that has not arrived. Relationships

• Darnell Nuna: Dupravel's only son is initially the leverage used by the Cult and Mauriss to control him. Dupravel accepts two forms of servitude to protect Darnell, then watches him become a Monarch and responds with pride when Darnell eventually defeats him.
• Leo Skyshard: Leo infiltrates the Black Serpents and later becomes Dupravel's contractual master. The bond begins as Dupravel's negotiated surrender, but campaigning and the Cult's survival turn their forced alliance into a durable command relationship.
• Aegon Veyr: Dupravel attempts to assassinate Veyr while his own strength is suppressed. Veyr survives through prediction, outside interference, and the delayed recovery of Dupravel's Monarch power; they later serve within the same Cult leadership.
• Mauriss: Dupravel approaches Mauriss to save Darnell, only to be manipulated, humiliated, stripped of Origin Metal, and used as a disposable infiltrator. Mauriss's betrayal closes Dupravel's path back to the Righteous Faction.
• Charles: Charles identifies Viper almost immediately but offers the enslaved Monarch professional respect. The gesture gives Dupravel his first sense that the Cult may recognize the warrior beneath his contractual status.
• Su Pei: Their Koral duel becomes a negotiation that brings Su Pei into Leo's service. They later operate as complementary Monarchs, with Su Pei holding opponents while Dupravel attacks blind angles.
• Valterri: Valterri hates Dupravel for killing his father and suspects Viper's identity. Dupravel answers his provocation by defending Darnell and attacking Valterri's dependence on inherited vengeance.
