Alexis — The World Dragon's Heir

Alexis Cygnus is the Ninth Princess of Cygnia, a Royal Paladin, and one of the principal architects of the restored Duchy of Wistover. The younger of Cygnia's twin princesses, she combines frontline command with an exacting understanding of court, logistics, and provincial government. Her decision to make Dominic Wavemates her advisor grows into a marriage and governing partnership that carries both of them from the Cygnian war effort through the rebuilding of Wistover and the raising of a dragon-blooded royal family.

Biography

Survival and the Royal Forge

Alexis enters the story as a princess whose public station has not separated her from practical danger. She and her elder twin Josephine lead the royal hunting group that Elanor has fought to join, and Alexis specifically requests Dominic's presence after his earlier expedition with their younger sister. At dinner she seats the horned apprentice between the twins despite his alarm at the Paladins around them. The gesture is playful, but it also brings a vulnerable newcomer into the protected center of the party rather than leaving him exposed to the social hierarchy around the table. (Chapters 10–16)

On the ride back to the smithy, Alexis explains why she prefers books to the marriage market. Years of proposals that treated the twins as a paired acquisition have made the court's sexual and dynastic expectations repellent to her. That history explains both her suspicion of would-be suitors and her willingness to tease Dominic without offering him the deference he expects from a storybook princess. She notices people following them, avoids visiting Pops when it could be misconstrued, and addresses Dominic by the Wavemates family name, showing that even a private conversation remains shaped by surveillance and lineage. (Chapters 16–18)

Their first meeting therefore establishes more than an early attraction. Alexis is interested in a young magic user who treats her as a combatant, listens to her stories, and has useful ambitions of his own, but she does not immediately turn that interest into a court claim. Instead, she encourages him to attend the Royal Apprentice intake and leaves him to prove himself through the forge. Her reserve preserves her freedom while giving Dominic a legitimate route into royal service, a pattern she later repeats by converting personal trust into defined work rather than relying on rumor or favoritism alone. Aramos and the Cygnian War Effort

Alexis next meets Dominic after both have been caught in the fighting outside Cygnia City. She takes custody of his Inventory Cube so officials will not seize his battlefield spoils, then walks him through the gates under her protection even though their arrival will fuel gossip. Her attention immediately returns to the wider emergency: she produces a topographical map, analyzes the Ogre reports, and explains that the closed gates are keeping reservists and guards from abandoning the city to defend their own farms. At the palace she adjusts Dominic's hat over his horns, introduces his craft to nobles, and uses him as a social shield without pretending that the surrounding prejudice has vanished. When Cygnia mobilizes its support trades for Aramos, Alexis is given a responsibility she did not seek but handles directly. She tells frightened smiths and apprentices that they will maintain equipment behind the line rather than fight as infantry, arranges packing instructions and transport, and leads their convoy. The mission becomes a battlefield command when coordinated enemies converge on Aramos. Alexis keeps her soldiers in formation, accepts damage to her own armor, and responds to encirclement by feigning surrender long enough for Dominic to attack the enemy archmage. The deception breaks the hostile command structure and lets her force survive a battle designed around the weaknesses of the royal parties. (Chapters 54–65)

Alexis then finds Dominic crushed in the wrecked forge wagon and witnesses a truth he does not yet understand: he has become a tiny golden dragon, regenerated, and returned to human form. She conceals what she saw and lets him believe that a healing potion saved him. The choice protects him from being treated as a royal curiosity or weapon at the moment when his service has already made him politically valuable. In the aftermath, she gathers testimony, organizes the departure rather than waiting on one overworked smith, and brings Dominic home as a brevet advisor whose observations can help the Crown understand the coordinated attacks. Back at court, Alexis makes that temporary role substantive. She appoints Dominic as her advisor on magic and weapons, presents his high-altitude glider proposal through the proper royal channel, and adds her own plan to place Paladin infiltrators among suspect noble households as servants. The partnership works because she translates his unconventional ideas into policy while demanding contingency plans when an experiment might fail. After palace assassins reveal how deeply the enemy has penetrated Cygnia, Alexis volunteers to reinforce Burton, accepting a dangerous command because the threatened city needs royal authority as well as weapons. Burton, Dagos, and the Royal Marriage

Alexis travels to Burton in a maid's dress and scarf because palace traitors may be tracking her movements. Once inside the city, she assesses walls, barracks, airship facilities, and water reserves rather than assuming that a prestigious keep is defensible. An assassination attempt inside her tower confirms the danger, but she uses the surviving witnesses and Dominic's illusions to investigate instead of withdrawing. When the invasion arrives, she commands from the walls, orders burning oil deployed after the flanks collapse, and reserves enough Paladin power to stabilize the badly wounded Marquis Burton XXXIV while the Natural Sons and Royal Guards open a retreat. Her authority holds the city's separate defenders together under both external assault and internal betrayal. (Chapters 98–131)

Victory changes Alexis's relationship with Dominic without removing the court pressures she has always disliked. She returns to the capital comfortable enough to read with her head in his lap, yet erupts when her family announces formal marriage trials. Her anger is aimed less at Dominic than at a system that treats a princess's marriage and inheritance as state property; she had planned to avoid it by becoming a battle nun. Even so, she instinctively rushes to check Dominic after a rival challenges him, consults him during the policy trials, and allows professional trust to become a public preference. Dominic's claim succeeds because he has already served beside her, not because the competition persuades her to want a political husband. (Chapters 137–164)

The pair then leave courtly tests for an incognito campaign in Dagos. Alexis dyes her hair, places Ella in her armor to mislead spies, and leads the Natural Sons through ambushes intended to break enemy logistics without sacrificing her smaller force in conventional engagements. She chooses artillery targets, studies captured orders that call for her abduction, uses herself and Dominic as visible bait, and orders food distributed to villages whose cooperation they may need later. Seeing the emptied countryside tempers even her hostility: she begins to distinguish Dagos's rulers and armies from people starved, conscripted, or displaced by the same regime. (Chapters 165–186)

At Albroles, Alexis turns from raiding to diplomacy. She openly identifies herself as Cygnia's Ninth Princess, warns Prince Kaizon that Cygnia has enough artillery to make his threats meaningless, and helps manage a succession gathering repeatedly disrupted by assassination. When attackers strike, she heals survivors and brings the Natural Sons into the palace as a trusted security force. The mission ends with a recognized new Dagos ruler and with Alexis choosing to marry Dominic in a Paladin ceremony. Cygnia subsequently recognizes the union, names Dominic Duke of Wistover, and makes Alexis Duchess of a frontier holding whose neglected condition suits her far better than a decorative palace life. Founding Wistover

Alexis reaches Wistover as both a newlywed and the only experienced royal administrator in a household being built from abandoned rooms and hurried recruitment. She assesses the people Dominic has hired, arranges new identities for a family whose past could endanger them, secures the manor library and seals off a suspiciously bloodstained study. Rather than wait for servants to recreate palace routine, she divides the restoration with Dominic, taking responsibility for the house and grounds while he surveys farms and the village. Her title gives the settlement legitimacy, but her early work consists of inventories, cleaning decisions, staff placement, and the constant judgment of whom it is safe to trust. (Chapters 216–230)

As refugees and former soldiers arrive, Alexis turns those household decisions into regional policy. She orders incubators, fencing, fabrics, and other supplies according to what the community will need, calculates crop production against a rapidly changing population, and redraws baronial maps so returning landholders cannot leave farmers without viable ground. She scouts ruined estates, presses Dominic to decide how he will treat repentant former nobles, and helps appoint Sheriff Nate because the experienced exile can enforce law more impartially than Dominic can in matters touching Wavemates. During an Ogre attack, she exposes hidden mages with a flare, fights beside the settlers, and orders a search for threats to outlying farms. (Chapters 241–262)

Alexis also builds security into ordinary domestic life. She trains the maids rather than leaving the manor dependent on visibly armed guards, seeks military instructors, and treats the Veiled Maids as both household staff and a concealed protective force. At the same time, she insists on architects, roads, row housing, and planned noble districts before Wistover's popularity can produce the same slums and status competition she knew in the capital. Her approach is preventive: disciplined staff, defensible settlements, and clear land allocation are cheaper and less cruel than correcting corruption and violence after they become normal. By the time foreign princes arrive, Alexis has learned to make hospitality serve the same goals. She receives old allies such as Prince George, explains Wistover's conditions to military visitors, and helps reshape the manor and city for royal delegations without surrendering its informal culture. She can wear a gown and conduct a ceremonial welcome, but continues to train her staff, assess troop logistics, and show guests the weapons protecting the region. The restored duchy consequently becomes not merely Dominic's ancestral claim, but a functioning court whose military readiness and social legitimacy are substantially Alexis's work. The Duskblade Sect and Monster Incursions

The arrival of the Duskblade Sect and multiple foreign delegations leaves Alexis responsible for a house full of powerful people while monster forces gather around Wistover. She accompanies mage teams with Royal Paladins, prepares Mitfield for the possibility that the trouble will spread, and retains command of Wistover's reserves when other royal armies launch operations elsewhere. Her priority is not personal glory: she keeps riflemen and guards at the duchy because a counterattack against the growing city would undo months of refugee settlement and construction. (Chapters 344–381)

On a hunting mission, Alexis's small party discovers that the monsters are organized by hostile mages. She opens on a Bugbear camp with rifles, then moves to sword and shield when the melee closes, using Holy Slash and Consecrated Ground to break physically stronger enemies. When wounded refugees prove to be bait for a portal ambush, she first hesitates rather than kill possible civilians; once the disguised mages reveal themselves, she targets them, deploys artillery, and places her own strong Area Barrier over the portal to slow the horde until reinforcements arrive. The sequence shows both sides of her command: restraint while identity is uncertain, followed by rapid escalation when the threat is established. (Chapters 362–365)

The wider campaign separates Alexis and Dominic into complementary forces. She leads organized soldiers, Paladins, and Royal Guards through the monster horde while he and Amie hunt hostile casters and strike exposed targets. Alexis expects him to be aggressive where Dagos is involved but explicitly orders allies to prevent him from being flanked, treating his fury as a battlefield condition to manage rather than a substitute for command. Afterward she assesses militia casualties, calls for more healers and riflemen, and returns to the quieter work of equipment repair with Dominic. Their competitiveness does not weaken the partnership; it lets each take responsibility for a different part of the same defense. (Chapters 365–414)

Dominic's gift of the Shield of Frozen Vengeance gives Alexis a stronger focus for the barrier magic she already uses. She tests it immediately against Fahad, demonstrating that practical experience, physical enhancement, and sustained spell use matter more than elegant textbook swordsmanship. Yet the shield is not only a personal prize. Alexis helps evaluate how similar equipment could let Royal Guards maintain enchanted weapons and defenses for longer, then remains in Wistover to host envoys and organize the city while her brothers return to the front. The monster crisis thus leaves her with better tools but also with a larger civil and military institution to keep functioning. (Chapters 427–450)

Refugees, Conspiracies, and Provincial Power

Wistover's growth changes Alexis's burdens from emergency settlement to sustained government. She compiles financial reports, supervises marriage events for displaced noble families and returning Natural Sons, and keeps the Veiled Maids training while delegating routine cleaning to other staff. Her understanding of court malice remains useful: she spots drugging schemes among debutantes, gives vulnerable newcomers structured housing rather than leaving them to wealthy patrons, and turns social occasions into a method of integrating people who would otherwise remain isolated military or refugee groups. The work frustrates her, but it also makes Wistover unusually capable of absorbing upheaval without recreating the abuses of the courts its residents fled. (Chapters 451–493)

The supernatural flood in Dagos tests that administration when Dominic vanishes through an enemy portal. Alexis fears he has been killed and prepares to cross the border after him, but she is also left with a mountain of signatures, incoming airships, warehouse construction, wounded trolls, and an approaching army. She refuses to sign blindly because doing so would establish corruption as the new duchy's normal practice, and she redirects military questions to available royal officers while continuing the reviews only a noble can legally approve. When Dominic finally returns, her anger is rooted in the twelve hours he left his household uncertain whether he lived, revealing how completely the former advisor has become both family and a necessary partner in rule. (Chapters 496–535)

The flood, Prince Kaizon's rebellion, and the arrival of foreign monarchs turn Wistover into the center of a continental settlement. Alexis helps receive armies and rulers, mobilizes her staff through sudden changes, and supplies the local knowledge needed to separate Dagos civilians from conspirators and military claimants. Kaizon's capture does not erase the need for a lawful succession, refugee relief, or reconstruction, so she and Dominic host negotiations that produce the Treaty of Wistover and a plan for rebuilding under international guarantees. Her achievement here is institutional rather than spectacular: a manor founded months earlier becomes neutral enough to hold enemies, creditors, and allies in one political process. (Chapters 545–605)

Cygnia's king then appoints Alexis Governess of Stansia Province and Dominic Governor. The arrangement recognizes that her royal legitimacy, war record, and administrative competence can stabilize a region drawn to the Wavemates name without giving the duchy unchecked taxation over every noble. Alexis works with Advisor Trionne, Julio, and the new staff on finance, banking facilities, military appointments, and the inevitable expansion of government offices. She often pushes Dominic back toward the forge when specialized production is the better use of his time, but that delegation leaves her carrying more of the legal and financial machinery herself. The Royal Joust and Regional Alliances

As Governess and Duchess, Alexis helps make the Royal Joust both a tournament and a declaration that Wistover is safe enough to host the continent. She trains household musicians and service staff, organizes visiting guards, tracks the brackets, and watches for assassination even while the crowds celebrate. She also slips away with Paladins to hunt Ogres, partly because a month of hosting has left her desperate for the field. Returning through a portal in formal dress, she resumes the royal role without pretending the two selves are separate: the same discipline governs her monster hunt, her reception line, and her insistence that the successful event become a regular source of community for new residents. The gathering expands Wistover's regional network. Alexis insists that neighboring landholders and foreign peers be treated as relationships worth maintaining, helps expose a poisoning attempt, and balances security measures against the need to keep royal guests from feeling imprisoned. She advises on roads to the baronies, Paladin and rifle deployments, communications, and trade arrangements that will outlast the spectacle. Her preference remains fantasy and romance over bureaucratic reports, but she no longer treats paperwork as someone else's problem: the reports are the price of keeping the people, routes, and armies she cares about supplied. (Chapters 639–684)

Alexis's pregnancy changes what she can do without removing her public obligations. She accepts the loss of regular field work with visible frustration, continues training the Veiled Maids and manor guard, and represents Stansia's nobles at a capital gathering so the old families cannot dismiss them as isolated provincials. She understands that the hereditary title of Duke carries more social weight than the revocable governorship and reminds Dominic to present both. At the same time, the coming child turns an abstract discussion of Wistover's succession into a personal one; Alexis expects several heirs but refuses to reduce their future to the dynastic pressures that shaped her own childhood. Heirs of Wistover and the World Dragon

Late pregnancy confines Alexis more severely than court protocol ever did. She resists early bed rest, questions the returning Wavemates guards about Dominic's longevity and the Beast World, and carefully integrates them with the household rather than letting an ancient oath override present security. The birth of Katerina, a winged and fire-breathing daughter, fulfills Alexis's childhood hope of a family chosen rather than imposed. She immediately worries about the girl's future beyond marriage and succession, while also accepting nurses and staff when the physical demands of recovery make total personal control impossible. (Chapters 705–736)

Motherhood does not make Alexis passive. She retains jurisdiction over the manor staff, sends trusted representatives when she will not attend distant ceremonies, scrutinizes Dominic's unsanctioned violence, and handles tax and royal visitors with the same combination of decorum and intimidation as before. When Katerina's scream triggers Dominic's full transformation into a huge golden dragon, Alexis approaches the nursery armed but remains beside him once she sees that he is protecting rather than attacking the child. Her presence helps turn a frightening manifestation of the World Dragon line into a family episode instead of a military crisis. (Chapters 744–788)

Once Katerina is old enough to remain with Dominic and the household, Alexis returns to regular Paladin outings. Hunting Ogres, Bugbears, and other threats restores the sense of self that pregnancy and constant childcare had interrupted. She uses the time away as public service rather than abandonment, then returns to teach her daughter royal decorum and restrain the child's emerging arrogance. Years later, she remains a superior sword fighter, worries that Katerina is rushing into marriage, and nevertheless approves when the proposed match proves affectionate rather than a stuffy transaction like the proposals once made for the twins. (Chapters 789–809)

Alexis accompanies Katerina when the new Crown Princess leaves for Chip, while Dominic accepts her absence and temporarily carries her workload. The final chronology then moves forward more than a century. Alexis has white in her hair and the lines of an experienced noblewoman, but ages more slowly than her own sons and remains beside Dominic as grandchildren and great-grandchildren compete to inherit Wistover. Their partnership has outlasted wars, provincial reconstruction, and the ordinary human span she once expected; its final problem is no longer survival, but choosing successors stable enough to carry what they built before she and Dominic finally withdraw from government. Appearance and personality

Alexis is an athletic blonde with long hair, sharp blue eyes, and a strong resemblance to her elder twin Josephine. Her usual confidence is most natural in armor, with her hair contained by a coif or later arranged for practical movement. When concealment is necessary, she can hide the bright hair under a scarf or dye it black and pass as a maid or lower-ranking soldier. Formal clothing often incorporates her martial identity, including gowns worn with a silver chest plate and a Paladin pendant, and observers repeatedly note that she is less comfortable in elegant dresses than in battle gear. (Chapters 16, 92, 99, 139, 165, and 201)

Her dominant public trait is controlled directness. Alexis can issue orders under siege, make a room of nobles accept an unwelcome reality, and maintain a dignified greeting even while using a companion as a shield from tiresome courtiers. She is suspicious without being indiscriminately cynical: she refuses to repeat speculation about vanished craftsmen, hesitates before attacking mages disguised among refugees, and insists on reviewing legal documents rather than allowing convenience to normalize corruption. Her humor is sharp, frequently physical, and often aimed at puncturing aristocratic vanity. (Chapters 41–42, 128, 363–364, and 524)

Outside public duty, Alexis is an enthusiastic reader of fantasy and romance, fond of food, gossip, competitive hunts, and unceremonious rest. The contrast is not hypocrisy. Books give her distance from a court that sexualized and bargained over the twin princesses, while combat offers work whose dangers and rules feel more honest. She dislikes administrative drudgery but accepts it when avoidance would leave soldiers, refugees, or tenants exposed. Her preference for action therefore coexists with long-term planning, careful budgeting, and the patience to train staff until they can act without her. (Chapters 17, 137–147, 260–270, 465, and 658)

Alexis is intensely protective without treating loved ones as helpless. She conceals Dominic's first draconic regeneration, trusts him as an advisor, and still confronts him when secrecy or bloodlust threatens the family they govern. She gives Katerina martial and magical opportunities while trying to teach the child restraint, and she worries about marriage because she remembers how little choice she was offered. Even after motherhood temporarily removes her from the field, she seeks a sustainable division of care rather than surrendering either her Paladin identity or her responsibilities at home. Magic, skills, and craft

Alexis is a Royal Paladin whose capabilities combine holy magic, physical enhancement, disciplined weapons training, and command experience. The corpus shows her using a Paladin Trade Skill Core and socketed spell gems, but does not supply a chronological sequence of formal Paladin ranks or levels. Her magic is therefore best understood through demonstrated functions rather than an inferred hierarchy.

Royal Paladin training and holy magic

Alexis says that the Paladins took her in when she was young, and by her first appearance she already leads field groups in armor. Her Paladin Trade Skill Core is worn on a necklace or pendant, identifying both her class and Order. Holy effects can also be carried in spell gems: Holy Slash is activated from a glowing gem on her necklace, while the Shield of Frozen Vengeance later serves as a channel for Area Barrier. The corpus does not separate the contribution of core, gem, prayer, and equipment in every scene, so effects should not all be treated as innate spells. (Chapters 16, 201, 362, 428, and 799)

Her offensive holy repertoire includes Holy Slash, Smite, and Consecrated Ground. Holy Slash lets her cleave a Bugbear after a muttered prayer, while Consecrated Ground burns and weakens monsters fighting within its area. In later formation combat, Alexis lays protective magic over the front line, activates Consecrated Ground after the enemy closes, and has the Paladins charge with Smite on their swords. These abilities are most effective when combined with a shield wall that fixes enemies in place; they are not shown as long-range substitutes for rifles or artillery. (Chapters 362 and 792–793)

Alexis also uses Area Barrier and unnamed protective spells. At a portal ambush, she casts a barrier over the opening to interrupt the stream of monsters, explicitly relying on one of her stronger spells until enemy mages can break or bypass it. With her later shield she can channel the same defense over herself while sparring. The barrier buys time and absorbs attacks, but it is not permanent or absolute: concentrated fire can collapse such defenses, and a portal maintained from the far side remains open after the nearby casters die. Her practice is therefore to layer barriers with disciplined formations, ranged fire, and reinforcements rather than depend on a single ward. (Chapters 128, 364–365, 428, and 792)

Healing and battlefield support

Paladin magic gives Alexis reliable but finite healing. At Burton she stops the Marquis's bleeding, stabilizes him under Dominic's barrier, applies a bandage, and uses a potion rather than trying to restore him completely. The narration makes her conservation deliberate: she expects to need her energy later in the battle, and the injured noble is no longer an essential frontline fighter. In Albroles she moves among the victims of an assassination and heals those still breathing, demonstrating a broader emergency-support role when immediate command permits it. (Chapters 128 and 195)

The limits are as important as the successes. Healing does not make casualties irrelevant, does not replace physical first aid, and consumes a resource Alexis manages across the whole engagement. Early on, Dominic wrongly assumes that her healing potion explains his survival at Aramos, but Alexis knows his wounds were fatal and that his regeneration came from his own unexplained dragon transformation. She protects the secret rather than claim a cure she did not perform. Later, she can use healing on herself after a minor fall and recover from childbirth with magic, but neither example establishes unrestricted regeneration. (Chapters 65, 128, 309, and 730–733)

Sword, shield, and firearms

Alexis is primarily a sword-and-shield combatant trained to operate within Paladin and Royal Guard formations. She knows named shield-slam patterns, shifts from ranged weapons to the front line when enemies close, and coordinates low cuts, barriers, and holy effects with the soldiers beside her. Her physical enhancement gems reduce the natural strength advantage of Bugbears and Ogres. In a formal spar with Fahad, the prince's technique is judged more elegant, but Alexis is faster, stronger, and far more experienced at adapting to an actual opponent. Decades later Dominic still cannot defeat her in a sword fight. (Chapters 362, 428, 792, and 806)

She is also competent with rifles, pistols, spears, and field artillery. Alexis uses a rifle to open ambushes and break mage barriers, switches to a pistol where trees or melee make a long arm awkward, fires flares to expose hidden enemies, and understands when mortar or oil deployment is necessary. Some ranged effects are explicitly item-derived: her rifle can socket a Fireball gem, and the higher-grade magitech weapons supplied by Dominic provide force beyond an ordinary firearm. She does not confuse that advantage with personal invulnerability, keeping guards in formation and calling reinforcements when a small hunting team faces an army. Command, intelligence, and administration

Alexis's most consequential nonmagical skill is command. She reads terrain and logistics, recognizes why soldiers may desert to protect exposed homes, assesses fortifications, and uses feigned surrender, disguises, bait, infiltrators, and controlled retreats without losing sight of the civilians those tactics affect. She is equally comfortable directing a convoy's support staff and coordinating regiment-scale forces through experienced officers. Her representative uses range from the Aramos deception and Burton's layered defense to the portal battle, where she calculates whether a flare can be seen before committing her force to hold. Courtcraft and governance are extensions of that same situational awareness. Alexis can identify surveillance, use gossip without being ruled by it, interrogate suspicious staff, host hostile delegations, and translate Dominic's technical proposals into forms kings and generals can act on. At Wistover she adds budgeting, crop planning, land allocation, staffing, provincial finance, and event security. She has no magical shortcut for those tasks and openly dislikes much of the paperwork; her proficiency comes from royal education, repeated practice, competent advisors, and a refusal to approve matters she has not understood. By the latest chapters, most routine work is delegated, but the family's continuing government still depends on the standards she helped establish. Relationships

Dominic Wavemates: Alexis first treats Dominic as an intriguing apprentice, then makes him her advisor because his technical judgment complements her command experience. Shared battles turn that trust into affection and marriage.
