Alex

Alex is Cygnia's Second Prince, an Archmage and Battle Mage whose combination of combat power, magical scholarship, and diplomatic reliability makes him the royal family's specialist for difficult assignments. He kills the invading Dagos king, helps secure the successor's coronation, and becomes a trusted adviser to Dominic Wavemates as Wistover grows into a provincial and international center. (Chapters 69–801)

Biography

Kingslayer and guardian of the Dagos succession

Alex enters the war as both a target and one of Cygnia's strongest offensive assets. A coordinated assassination attempt against him is treated as the final sign that the attacks on the royal family have a common organizer. He answers Dagos's invasion by ambushing King Conrad's convoy alone and killing the elderly monarch before the escort can react. Public reports describe single combat and give Alex the title “Kingslayer,” but he privately corrects that heroic version for Alexis: the action was an efficient surprise attack meant to break the enemy succession and war effort, not a ceremonial duel. (Chapters 69 and 133–135)

After Burton, Alex brings Alexis home, supplies reserve troops so the damaged city is not abandoned, and quickly treats Dominic as a useful magical peer rather than merely his sister's subordinate. He examines Dominic's magitech, explains Battle Mage advancement techniques, and shares the mana-crystal method when Dominic admits that his combat spells lag behind his political responsibilities. Alex also recognizes that frontier monster hunting may suit the couple better than court life. Alex then escorts the couple into the contested Dagos capital while trying to prevent Kaizon from using them as targets. He publicly confirms their engagement, helps cleanse poisoned drinks, raises a defensive barrier over noncombatant nobles during the banquet attack, and searches the palace with a finding spell after Kaizon's imitation body is destroyed. Once he concludes the conspirator was a magical double, he deploys the Natural Sons throughout the palace and accelerates the coronation before another assassination can remove the lawful candidate. His earlier custody of the Dagos crown makes that solution possible: he makes the regalia available for King Gustav, then places himself between the new king and incoming arrows so the crowd sees a legitimate monarch protected by Cygnia rather than installed without support. Storm relief and the Wistover security crisis

During the regional typhoon, Alex investigates why Shersdonian mage sects have aided attacks while their king appears to avoid direct conquest. He concludes that the support may be giving old Dagos elites enough power to destroy themselves and avenge Wavemates, but he treats that theory as less urgent than mass displacement. Alex proposes bringing the Shersdonian envoys to Wistover so their intentions can be tested inside broader relief negotiations. He then spends days on mobile rescue duty along the flooded Atherster River before bringing more than two hundred exhausted officers and noble soldiers to Wistover, linking humanitarian work to the Duchy's need for settlers and security. The effort leaves him dangerously depleted. Alex remains awake to keep requisitioned airships and their relics under control, and admits that his mana exhaustion is too severe for another trip. While walking back to the manor, he nevertheless detects hostile tracking magic before portals and a barrier seal him with Dominic and two Trolls. An emergency energy elixir lets him teleport out and summon his regiment, while Dominic and the Trolls survive the suicide assault. The episode demonstrates both Alex's sensitivity and judgment—he warns the group and withdraws when defense would burden them—but also the finite reserves that even an Archmage can exhaust through rescue, transport, and sustained magical control. Once recovered, Alex becomes the ranking Cygnian royal at the multinational meetings. When Wistover's dormant curse drives visiting monarchs toward violence, he surrounds the royals with barriers and protective gear, then accepts Dominic's evidence that no new hostile caster was present. He helps convert the crisis into governance: Dominic and Alexis receive responsibility for Stansia Province, public portals and roads are commissioned, and Alex opens the portals that bring experienced advisers into Wistover. Royal specialist and commercial restraint

Alex's later work shows why raw magical power does not translate into unrestricted independence at court. He attends the Royal Joust as part of the family delegation and shares its jokes, but he is also repeatedly assigned the specialist work that other royals cannot perform. When the king wants Cygnian nobles to reduce their reliance on the Merchant's Guild, Alex becomes the adviser carrying the policy to Wistover's airship builders and coastal lords. He listens when they explain that skilled labor, international customers, and Guild relationships make rapid expansion difficult, and asks for an honest feasibility plan rather than forcing the desired answer. Dominic suggests that Alex could own the new trading venture himself, but Alex refuses because combining exceptional magic with a large private income would create friction among the royal siblings and nobility. He therefore keeps the role of coordinator, allowing manufacturers and regional lords to hold the commercial assets while reports return through him. By the final period, Wistover expects Alex to be interested first in technical achievement, and he continues to move comfortably between royal duty and family trust: at the palace library he arranges escorts for his niece Katerina, while accepting that Amie will quietly verify unfamiliar staff. Appearance and personality

Alex has pale eyes and is still a comparatively young man despite his Archmage status. The corpus gives little further fixed physical description. In formal settings he wears elaborate black Cygnian Royal Mage robes that advertise both prince and Archmage, and in dangerous situations he supplements clothing with multiple protective magitech devices. He is scholarly, technically curious, and comfortable calling himself one of the royal family's “nerds.” Alex can spend a journey reading, become animated over mana theory or an improbable weapon design, and laugh at the absurdity surrounding Dominic's household. Alex is an Archmage whose Battle Mage training combines high-output combat magic, portals, barriers, magical detection, and advanced manipulation of mana cores and spell gems. He can identify why Dominic's rapid learning is exceptional, explain why higher spell levels become scarce, and review experimental weapon concepts for obvious flaws. He does not design Wistover's airships or firearms himself; his craft is evaluating magical systems, teaching methods he already knows, and connecting technical facts to royal decisions. That analytical habit also shapes his intelligence and diplomatic work. Alex distinguishes evidence from motive when studying Shersdonia, recognizes how a clone can make mutually overlapping appearances, and evaluates whether refugees, public portals, or direct noble trade strengthen Cygnia without causing a larger conflict. His authority helps him implement decisions, but he still depends on reports, local experts, and other royals for facts outside his specialties. The result is a practical partnership: he provides magical and political leverage while letting Dominic, guilds, and provincial officials define what their systems can actually sustain. Relationships

• Alexis: Alex is a protective older brother who respects Alexis's combat ability and supports the unconventional life she chooses with Dominic. He escorts her through the Dagos succession crisis without trying to take command away from her.
• Dominic Wavemates: Alex becomes Dominic's magical teacher, technical sounding board, and political ally. He is impressed and occasionally alarmed by Dominic's aptitude and methods, but consistently helps translate them into service for Cygnia.
• Claudius: Alex's specialist magic complements Claudius's command and succession duties. Alex is more interested in technical accomplishments, while Claudius takes the harder line on the political risks those inventions create.
• Russel: Alex works with his younger brother in royal administration and weighs how assignments or new commercial power would affect Russel's perceived ties to Wistover.
• Kaizon: Alex kills Kaizon's diplomatic double after it crosses the border, investigates another clone at Albroles, and helps install the lawful king whose coronation defeats Kaizon's claim.
