Sheriff Nate
Sheriff Nate is an experienced dragonkin lawman who leaves a travelling carnival to rebuild a stable life in Wistover. His thirty years as a county sheriff give Dominic Wavemates and Alexis an enforcer who can combine taxes, disputes, security planning, firearms, and local intelligence while the new Duchy grows faster than its institutions.
Biography
A lawman for the restored Duchy
Nate recognizes that Wistover lacks a sheriff and applies directly to Dominic during a carnival visit. He substantiates the request with a North Kinewen badge bearing the Wavemates mark, a Level 30 Gunslinger core, and thirty years of service. Nearly a century old but only middle-aged by dragonkin standards, he wants stability after a year following the carnival. Alexis accepts him once his experience is clear, giving the settlement the Lord's “Left Hand” needed to enforce laws, collect taxes and fines, and settle disputes. (Chapter 256)
His knowledge immediately changes Wistover's defenses. Nate understands Dominic's royal dragon traits, separates sensational Dagos stories from the temporary mechanics of a feral state, and warns that installed nobles still blame Dominic for military losses. Because trusted mercenaries are unavailable, he proposes training armed locals under the legal cover of a sheriff's posse or militia. The advice turns rumor and historical memory into a practical security policy rather than simply flattering Dominic's feared reputation. (Chapters 256–257)
Law amid Wistover's rapid growth
As refugees, workers, and nobles arrive, Nate's office becomes an integration and public-order hub. He escorts newcomers into town, receives notice of changing housing plans, checks unfinished residences, and designs patrol schedules for unofficial gatherings as well as formal events. His dry humor and occasional rum do not prevent him from anticipating that debutante traffic will also attract ordinary visitors and opportunists, so guard coverage extends beyond the manor's guest list. (Chapters 456, 477, and 487)
Nate also handles incidents that require discretion rather than spectacle. When a woman signals distress, he brings her to a warehouse to separate her account from a man falsely claiming to be her husband, while town guards secure the situation. By Chapter 713, Wistover needs no dedicated judge for routine cases: Dominic hears only the few matters requiring ducal judgment, and Nate resolves the rest. The office he requested as a route back to stability has become one of the systems that lets a crowded, wealthy Duchy function. (Chapters 572–573 and 713)
Appearance and personality
Nate is tall and powerfully built, with patches of silver scales on his chest. At nearly one hundred years old, he appears to humans as a man in his mid-to-late forties because dragonkin age slowly. His courtesy can be old-fashioned—he kisses Alexis's knuckles when she offers a handshake—but it coexists with a seasoned lawman's blunt assessment of threats, debts, and human behavior. (Chapter 256)
He enjoys theatrical stories and a dark joke, keeps rum in his office during a stressful housing surge, and appears relaxed enough to be underestimated. His actual conduct is methodical: he verifies arrangements, schedules security before crowds arrive, protects vulnerable complainants, and distinguishes useful warnings from panic. Nate's loyalty is institutional rather than servile; he respects Dominic's lineage while giving advice meant to prevent the Duke's reputation from becoming a security liability. (Chapters 256–257, 477, and 572–573)
Magic, skills, and craft
Nate holds a Level 30 Gunslinger Trade Skill Core. His equipment and experience establish firearms competence, while his dragonkin heritage lets him draw a limited amount of external mana and reload his pistol even under a mana-lock strap. He explicitly distinguishes the Kinewen family's noble dragon blood from Wavemates royal power: he cannot match Dominic's unrestricted external casting or healing Arcane Blast. The corpus gives no chronological account of how Nate reached Level 30, so this is a current qualification rather than a public progression sequence. (Chapter 256)
His sheriff's craft includes accounting, tax and fine enforcement, debt tracking, negotiation, investigation, and patrol planning. Thirty years in office teach him to anticipate secondary effects—unofficial visitors, unfinished housing, vulnerable witnesses, and legal workarounds for local defense—rather than merely arresting people after harm occurs. At the latest point, this experience allows him to handle nearly all ordinary Wistover judgments below Dominic's direct authority. (Chapters 256–257, 477, 572–573, and 713)
Relationships
- Dominic Wavemates: Nate recognizes Dominic's royal traits, protects the secret extent of his power, warns him about inherited enemies, and becomes the routine executor of Wistover law. (Chapters 256–257 and 713)
- Alexis: Alexis independently evaluates Nate's qualifications and hires him. He answers her authority with formal courtesy while supporting the disciplined security structure she brings to the Duchy. (Chapters 256–257)
- John Mackay: Both men carry limited draconic traits and old ties to Wavemates, but their roles complement one another: Nate is the visible lawman and John the covert protector. (Chapters 261 and 673)
- Wistover town guard: Nate directs patrols, escorts newcomers, investigates claims, and turns the growing guard into a civic service rather than only a military unit. (Chapters 456–487 and 572–573)
Items
- North Kinewen County Sheriff badge: A tarnished silver medallion bearing his former office on the face and the Wavemates mark on the back; it proves the experience behind his application. (Chapter 256)
- Gunslinger Trade Skill Core: A necklace-mounted Level 30 core that identifies Nate's formal firearms specialization. (Chapter 256)
