Josephine

Princess Josephine is the elder by minutes of Cygnia's twin Paladin Princesses, the older sister of Alexis. Boisterous in private and authoritative in armour, she protects her younger siblings, navigates a succession of political marriage plans, and ultimately marries Thorvald of West Keria after he overturns her proposed betrothal in open court.

Biography

Paladin sister and Royal protector

Josephine first appears as one of the two senior sisters leading the Royal party that takes Elanor outside the Capital after the youngest Princess has already been endangered. Elanor must persuade Josephine and Alexis to let her participate, and the guards remain under orders to restrict the younger Princess's exposure. In battle dress Josephine removes the decorative distinctions from her armour and keeps her visor down, making her difficult to distinguish from the other Paladins while her authoritative voice still marks her as a leader. Her position is therefore not ceremonial: she helps set the party's risk tolerance and leads from within the same armoured formation as its guards. (Chapters 11–15)

After Elanor proves herself, Josephine privately praises the effort instead of treating the danger as proof that the younger girl should never fight. At dinner she openly tells Dominic Wavemates that the family used him to deter unwanted attention from Elanor, but also explains that she trusts his intentions toward her. On the journey home, Josephine resumes control of Elanor's transport while filling the ride with combat stories and Palace anecdotes. These choices establish the balance that defines her family role: she is protective and willing to manipulate courtly seating or escorts for safety, yet she respects a younger sister's ambition once it is responsibly demonstrated. Josephine also participates in high-level Royal affairs with her Paladin guards and senior members of the Order. She is present at the advisory meeting when Dominic's new Royal role is defined and later stands with Alexis in the throne room during the confrontation with Kaizon. Marriage politics during the Dagos crisis

Her humour does not disguise the pressure: she and Alexis have grown up enduring vulgar speculation, and the Crown's plans place Josephine's future residence and political allegiance inside negotiations among powerful houses. When the Crown publicly announces Josephine's betrothal to Saldock, she approaches the throne looking openly disgusted by him. Thorvald then claims a prior love match, declares that he has taken her first kiss, and creates that claim by kissing her before the King and assembled court. Josephine is initially as offended as Saldock and does not choose the public tactic, but she does not push Thorvald away; her blush after the kiss and her later delight that the “insane tactic worked” distinguish shock at his audacity from rejection of the resulting match. The King changes the arrangement in private, converting a planned Bostoverian alliance into a betrothal with the West Kerian noble Josephine actually understands beneath his buffoonish persona. That outcome does not make Thorvald's behaviour harmless or erase Josephine's agency from the aftermath. The court's older rules make a public first-kiss claim politically coercive, and the King is furious precisely because Thorvald has forced an immediate decision. Josephine nevertheless knows that his foolish public image is partly an act, agrees with Alexis's affectionate assessment of him, and remains with him as the new arrangement proceeds. Later reports place the wedding in spring and describe the twins as having obtained the kinds of husbands they wanted, while still joking that Josephine sought a durable sparring partner more than a conventional knight. Marriage, succession, and the sisters' reunion

By the next Royal birthday, Josephine and Thorvald are married and his family has named him heir to Duke North after his older brother loses the position. The change means Josephine is no longer simply married to a third son: she is positioned to become Duchess of a West Kerian border territory. Her everyday identity remains recognizably her own, however. Thorvald cannot draw her away from sparring and must carry her request that Alexis visit, while Josephine later smacks him when his amusement goes too far. Josephine arranges her reunion with pregnant Alexis near the Palace entrance because she does not know how far along her sister is, a small accommodation that shows the same practical protection she once extended to Elanor. She listens while Alexis describes Wistover's unconventional development, checks that the new life is genuinely making her happy, and accepts that her twin can remain content even while taking a year away from monster hunting. The exchange marks a change in both sisters' circumstances without weakening their bond: each has married into a different political future, but Josephine still reads Alexis through their shared Paladin values rather than courtly appearances. Josephine's marriage takes her outside Cygnia, so she is among the Royal daughters who do not swear fealty to the next Cygnian King. She and Thorvald nonetheless return for the family's party, and their public kiss remains a remembered precedent for a later formal claim. Her latest source-grounded status is therefore that of a foreign-married Cygnian Princess who retains family access and ceremonial importance while her principal dynastic future lies with Thorvald's ducal house. Appearance and personality

Josephine and Alexis are nearly identical twins, with Josephine older by only minutes. In formal or relaxed settings, others can mistake them or become vulnerable to their deliberate “wrong twin” prank; in battle, closed visors and stripped decoration make Josephine difficult to distinguish even from other Paladins.
