Marquis Burton XXXIV

Marquis Burton XXXIV is the civilian ruler who hosts Cygnia's wartime command during the siege of Burton. Although not a military specialist, he remains involved in the city's defence until the death of his wife and the strain of the siege lead him to transfer the title to his eldest son, James Burton.

Biography

Burton, Dagos, and the Royal Marriage

The Marquis welcomes Alexis and Dominic Wavemates to Burton with rooms and strategy meetings, proud enough of his city to fill an otherwise silent walk by extolling its virtues. When Dagos attacks, he recognizes that he needs military help, follows reports from the walls, and commits barricade trucks when simultaneous gate assaults threaten defences that have held for more than a century. He is visibly terrified and protects his family in the Keep's safe rooms, but continues making the civil decisions his command requires. The enemy names his whole family for death, and the siege kills his wife. Broken by the loss and unable to continue ruling from the building where she died, he arranges a living transfer to James and retires to the Capital with a small household. (Chapters 101–132)

Appearance and personality

The corpus gives no stable physical description. At his introduction, an undersized shirt comes untucked during his grand gesture, giving his civic pride a slightly awkward quality. He is hospitable and devoted to Burton, but makes little effort to disguise his fear during the siege. His final letter is lucid about his mental condition and responsibilities, choosing an orderly succession instead of remaining in office while unable to rule. (Chapters 101–102, 127, and 132)

Magic, skills, and craft

The Marquis administers Burton's established walls, barriers, magical troops, and emergency gate defences. He understands that the city's combat mages are expected to have level-five major combat gems, but the corpus does not identify personal spells or a mage rank for him. His authority is administrative, and military specialists explicitly note that he needs assistance. (Chapters 116–123)

Relationships

  • James Burton: James is his eldest son and trained heir. The Marquis transfers the title and all estates to him after the siege rather than leaving Burton without effective leadership. (Chapters 131–132)
  • Alexis: Alexis uses Burton as a command centre, supports its defence, and receives the Marquis's formal request to approve his living transfer of title. (Chapters 101–132)
  • Dominic Wavemates: Dominic helps protect the city and supplies the military judgment and weapons development the Marquis lacks. (Chapters 101–131)
  • His wife: Her death during the siege leaves the Marquis unable to continue governing from Burton Keep and directly causes his retirement. (Chapters 131–132)

Items

  • Burton Keep defences: The Marquis commands established walls, barriers, and gate barricades as civic assets, not personal possessions. (Chapters 118–125)
