Cogwork Plate Armour

Cogwork Plate Armour is an early magitech armour pattern whose plates latch together through simple magical circuitry. The feature lets one flexible wearer equip a set without the assistant normally required for full plate, making the design useful to travellers, soldiers, and unusual body types even when its protection is otherwise conventional. History

Dominic learns the Uncommon recipe alongside the Mana Revolver pattern and practices his smithing before attempting the first set. That result only narrowly reaches Uncommon grade, but its arm, leg, shoulder, and chest plates connect successfully. Wiz tests the system over his work clothes, demonstrating that the shoulders can be attached to the chest before the main piece is pulled on and the remaining plates snap into place. (Chapters 34–35)

Dominic wears Cogwork Plate under or over his uniform during the Aramos fighting, layering Mage Armour on top when magical protection is needed. Damage still requires ordinary repair, and the recipe's “cogwork” name refers mainly to the gear-shaped magical circuit on the chest rather than a powered mechanical frame. Later improvements carve channels that strengthen spells cast across the plates while preserving the self-latching circuit. (Chapters 51, 55–76)

The pattern remains valuable after Dominic's early set is worn and repaired. He can still produce the armour for other body plans— including a design considered for Dave—and uses the familiar chest-and-pauldrons arrangement years later. The corpus does not present it as his finest armour, but its repeatability and independent dressing mechanism keep it relevant. (Chapters 289 and 446)

Properties and use

• Self-latching plates: Magical circuits draw the individual pieces together once positioned, allowing a wearer to equip most or all of the set alone. (Chapters 35, 70, and 289)
• Piece layout: The standard design includes leg plates, arm plates, pauldrons, and a chest plate. (Chapter 70)
• Spell channels: Added circuitry can improve Mage Armour or another spell cast through the plates. (Chapter 76)
• Layered defense: Dominic combines the physical plate with Mage Armour rather than treating either protection as sufficient by itself. (Chapter 64)
• Conventional damage: The latching effect does not prevent dents, wear, brittleness, or the need for forge repairs. (Chapters 70 and 74)
• Pattern limits: “Cogwork” describes its gear-like circuit and self-assembly; the armour is not shown as a motorized exoskeleton. (Chapter 74)
