Li Qiuyang

Li Qiuyang is a branch-lineage elder whose childhood opportunity leads him into cultivation, but whose hopes of advancement give way to long service and lasting injuries.

Biography

A lifetime of loyalty despite a damaged cultivation path

Born Ye Qiuyang, he regains the Li surname with his father after his spiritual orifice is discovered. Mutian entrusts him with the Azure Essence Meridian Nourishment Technique and sends him to cultivate with Xiangping. A spirit fruit eaten in childhood accelerates his early progress and helps the family discover its tree, but its consequences later thwart his hopes of orthodox Qi Cultivation. When his breakthrough fails, Tongya comforts him and recommends unrefined qi instead. Qiuyang accepts the narrower path, wishing his experience might warn later generations against mistaking good fortune for lasting benefit. (Chapters 24–26, 37 and 239–240)

He works in spirit fields, supervises dependent cultivators and teaches Chen Mufeng, who also becomes his son-in-law. His unrefined Qi status offers longevity and flight but little combat strength, so he takes work in the Xiao market. During its destruction he uses talismans against the attackers and refuses to abandon Xuanxuan. Merging Fire costs him an arm while he intercepts Xu Xiao; the two survive, but his scars become the visible record of faithful service. He continues helping assess younger cultivators and advising old companions despite his wounds. (Chapters 52, 114, 121, 305, 310, 381–382, 387–388, 391, 670 and 908)

In extreme old age, restored flesh cannot reverse the Merging Fire damage to his foundation and lifespan. Sun Bai sustains him long enough for Xuanxuan to reach his bedside. Qiuyang remembers generations of the family he has served, while recognizing that he never entered its innermost circle. His final concern is for the clan’s future: after sending others away, he warns Xuanxuan that the Jiang Family has grown too close to him. He then slumps back as Xuanxuan and Donghe grieve, leaving the warning unanswered. (Chapter 1729)

Appearance and personality

He matures from a timid child into a respected elder. In later life he has a hoarse voice, carries a smoking pipe and bears numerous scars with only one remaining arm. At his final sickbed, ruined flesh and clouded eyes reflect injuries that physical restoration could not truly repair. (Chapters 24–25, 121, 670, 908 and 1729)

Abilities and cultivation

Qiuyang learns the Azure Essence Meridian Nourishment Technique and condenses Profound Scenery in childhood. He reaches the fourth Embryonic stage and later Jade Capital, but a failed orthodox Qi breakthrough damages his body. He turns to unrefined qi, gaining flight and extended life while remaining weak in battle. His practical experience includes managing paddies, appraising trade goods and identifying the harmful Green Origin Copper Essence contaminating the five mining families’ fields. Talismans provide important combat support during the market attack; later flesh restoration does not remove Merging Fire’s damage to his foundation or lifespan. (Chapters 24, 37, 114, 175, 239–240, 310, 381–382, 392 and 1729)

Items

He consumes the spirit fruit later identified as Snake Dragon Fruit and uses Qi-realm talismans during the market attack. His smoking pipe accompanies his later elder’s duties. These possessions do not overcome the limits of his unrefined cultivation. (Chapters 25, 121, 381–382 and 670)
