Beth

Beth, formally Bethany, is a mundane scientist who survives the Antarctic evacuation and later leads the project that brings electrical power to Bastion. She begins as Professor Obel's fiercely protective assistant, then becomes a demanding chief whose engineering team builds infrastructure across the Human Domain. Biography

Protecting Obel through Antarctica

Beth worked beside Obel at the LO49 research station and initially treated Sunny as another fighter with little respect for scholarship. Her attitude shifted after he saved the scientists from a transformed colleague. When the abomination attacked, the mundane Beth had placed her own fragile body between it and Obel; afterward she awkwardly thanked Sunny, even while rejecting his attempt to accept all blame for the security lapse. (Chapters 878 and 887–888)

During the journey north, Beth helped manage refugees and remained responsible for Obel's welfare while Sunny's cohort protected the convoy. She followed emergency instructions when Sunny detected danger and later joined the group aboard the Rhino. At Falcon Scott, Sunny used one of the last evacuation places to put her aboard a ship. Obel stepped back behind the barrier without warning, leaving Beth alive but forcing her to watch her mentor choose to remain in the doomed city. (Chapters 900, 913, 933, and 1052–1054)

From survivor to chief engineer

Years later Beth is still mundane, but has become Chief Bethany. She directs engineers, scientists, and Awakened with an abrasive intensity inherited in spirit from Obel's devotion to work. Her team repairs cables, coordinates distant facilities, and completes the Rivergate system, lighting Bastion with stable electric power. The achievement fulfills her promise that Dream Realm cities could one day equal the infrastructure she admired in NQSC. (Chapters 1595–1598, 2269, and 2278)

Beth continues expanding practical infrastructure rather than confining herself to one plant. She supervises the Rivergate hydroelectric dam, commands Awakened specialists during repairs, and considers future solar, geothermal, and marine projects. Her latest ordinary life also includes a romantic partnership with Quentin, the healer who supports her field crews and secretly serves the Shadow Clan. (Chapters 2269, 2765, 2795, and 2799)

The Hunger plague

Beth initially punished a subordinate for supporting Asterion, but later spoke of the Sovereign with inexplicable trust and forgot her own earlier opposition. A golden glint in her eyes and this abrupt reversal show that the Hunger Domain had altered her. Quentin noticed the contradiction, yet the next recorded scene shows the pair holding hands and smiling while the Night Garden besieges the Ivory Island. Beth remains alive; Quentin's matching calm strongly suggests that he, too, had fallen by then, but the scene confirms Beth's enthrallment more directly than his. (Chapters 2799–2800)

Appearance and personality

Beth is a young woman with dark hair usually tied in a messy bun and sharp, attitude-filled eyes. Long work sessions leave dark circles beneath them, loose strands around her face, and even scorch marks on her white lab coat. As a chief she pairs that coat with a formal suit and buttoned blouse, preserving a professional appearance that her relentless schedule continually ruins. (Chapters 878, 1595, and 2269)

She is sarcastic, scathing, industrious, and intensely protective. Beth will shield Obel despite having no supernatural defenses, browbeat exhausted teams into another test run, and immediately turn a disaster into an engineering problem. Her severity is balanced by gratitude, loyalty, and genuine delight when a system works; the uncharacteristic cheerfulness about Asterion is therefore evidence of outside influence rather than normal optimism. Abilities and Aspect

Mundane scientific expertise

Beth is explicitly a mundane human and has no Aspect, soul essence, Attributes, or supernatural Abilities disclosed in the corpus. Her effectiveness comes from scientific training, technical leadership, and the ability to coordinate mixed teams of mundane engineers and Awakened specialists. She understands mechanical generators, spelltech control systems, power transmission, hydroelectric facilities, and the logistical demands of operating infrastructure in the Dream Realm. Her limitations are correspondingly human. Beth cannot fight Nightmare Creatures, repair supernatural damage by force of will, or personally replace an Ascended specialist. At LO49 she could only shield Obel with her body; at Rivergate she needs Effie to remove a Great Creature and Quentin to repair structural cracks. Relationships

Professor Obel

Obel is Beth's mentor, superior, and the person she repeatedly risks herself to protect. He corrects her rudeness, trusts her work, and ensures that she crosses the evacuation barrier before choosing death for himself. Beth survives to embody his belief that knowledge and a measure of stubborn “stupidity” are necessary for humanity, though the corpus does not show them speaking again after Falcon Scott. (Chapters 878, 887–888, and 1052–1056)

Quentin

Quentin becomes Beth's partner after both survive Antarctica by very different routes. He helps maintain her infrastructure network, joins her at meals and social gatherings, and shares a home with her. As a hidden Shadow Clan operative, he recognizes that her sudden trust in Asterion is abnormal; their final shared scene, however, offers no evidence that he successfully frees her.
