Tamar
Tamar is a young Legacy of Clan Sorrow who survives being sent to Godgrave as a Sleeper, becomes an Awakened melee specialist, and rises to command soldiers in the Domain War. Her friendship with Rain begins when Rain saves her after a disastrous survey mission and later carries both women through war, peace, and Tamar's attempt to become a Master. (Chapters 1677, 1779–1832, 1916–2250, and 2749–2797)
Biography
Sleeper in Godgrave
Tamar first appears exhausted and frightened in Godgrave, sheltering the infected Fleur and asking whether Ray survived. She identifies herself as a scion of Sorrow, a clan sworn to Song, and is understandably wary of Nephis, who stands on the opposing side of the brewing conflict. Even so, her concern remains fixed on her friends. Once Nephis heals Fleur and promises rescue, Tamar accepts the aid and declares that she will strive to survive. (Chapter 1677)
The three teenagers had been sent into the Death Zone by the Nightmare Spell at the winter solstice. Their ordeal binds Tamar, Ray, and Fleur into a lasting cohort and leaves Tamar practiced at hiding fear behind an austere facade. Nephis and the Lord of Shadows carry them away from immediate danger, allowing all three Sleepers to return and Awaken. The corpus does not narrate the remainder of their trial or state the exact appraisal Tamar received. (Chapters 1680 and 1784)
Survey leader and Rain's rescue
Soon after Awakening, Tamar leads Ray, Fleur, and a group of mundane specialists on the final survey for the Eastern Road. Her assignment is probably her first mission as an Awakened, yet she evaluates every porter, enforces the boundary of Queen Song's protection, and serves as the cohort's armored melee bulwark. Rain initially mistakes the strain beneath Tamar's severe manner for aristocratic pride, then learns that the young Legacy's composure was forged by genuine terror in Godgrave. (Chapters 1779–1784)
The return journey collapses into disaster. Tamar catches a falling laborer and is swept into a canyon, suffering broken legs, bruised ribs, and a badly injured arm. Rain refuses to abandon her, builds a stretcher, hunts for food, and drags her through the wilderness while a Tyrant pursues them. Tamar, unwilling to let Rain die for her, forces herself upright on partially healed legs and prepares to recall the Echo protecting the rest of the survey party, accepting the risk to the group rather than remaining helpless. (Chapters 1815–1826)
Rain's natural Awakening finally gives them the strength to escape, and Tamar responds with gratitude rather than resentment at being saved by someone she had believed mundane. She also recognizes the political danger of Rain's discovery. Tamar explains how Sovereigns and Legacy clans might sincerely portray untested natural Awakened as a threat, suppress the knowledge to protect their authority, or target Rain before she has powerful backing. Her warning shapes Rain's decision to consult her teacher before revealing what she accomplished. (Chapters 1826–1832)
Centurion of the Domain War
Tamar, Ray, Fleur, and Rain enter the Domain War with the Seventh Royal Legion. When an Ascended centurion dies during a retreat into Godgrave's Hollows, Tamar assumes command of the entire centuria because no replacement is available. She fights at the front with her enormous sword while Rain guards her back, holding a fragile formation together amid an endless stampede of Nightmare Creatures. Command begins as an emergency burden but becomes the role by which the army later remembers her. (Chapters 1916–1923)
The war repeatedly tests her against superior enemies. Tamar uses invisible platforms to evade a Nightmare Creature's claws and coordinate a kill with Ray and Rain, then later duels a more experienced Feather Knight whose lightning Aspect leaves her burned and temporarily helpless. Rain intervenes before the opposing Legacy can finish her. These battles show Tamar's saturated core, excellent essence control, and inherited equipment, but also establish clear limits: her mobility does not erase disparities in experience, Rank, or destructive power. (Chapters 1923 and 1999–2000)
Months of fighting change the teenager Rain first met. By the last campaign, Tamar's sternness has hardened into cold confidence and the haunted maturity shared by soldiers on both sides. She and Rain continue fighting even after the royal armies' battle is engulfed by greater powers, surviving until Nephis's distant healing flame restores the wounded combatants. Tamar emerges alive as a former centurion of the Seventh Royal Legion, while Clan Sorrow and the Song Domain lose the order that had defined her upbringing. (Chapters 2204 and 2250)
Peace, the Shadow Clan, and the Second Nightmare
After the war, Tamar becomes part of Rain's life beyond the battlefield. She joins Rain and Telle for an ordinary morning in Bastion, later accompanies Rain to NQSC as friend and unofficial bodyguard, and quietly turns a bank visit into an evaluation of a prospective cohort member. During the ensuing robbery she fights an Echo with a black greatsword forged for her by Sunny, then admits that she is assembling a team to challenge the Second Nightmare. (Chapters 2290–2295 and 2417–2424)
Tamar eventually serves the Shadow Clan and participates in its covert operations with Ray, Fleur, and Rain. Her planned Ascension also carries a personal aim: restoring dignity to fallen Clan Sorrow. She researches the chosen Seed exhaustively, interviews veterans who fought its abominations, and accepts equipment and preparation from Sunny. She leads the cohort back into Godgrave and enters the Seed without Rain, who follows natural Ascension and therefore cannot accompany them. (Chapters 2742 and 2749–2750)
Tamar remains inside the Nightmare at the end of the supplied corpus. Rain hopes to become a Master before her friends return and maintains two helpful Epithets on Tamar's sword indefinitely, sacrificing a small stream of essence to strengthen her from afar. Cassie's intervention during Asterion's attack causes those Epithets to disappear or be displaced, but the text does not reveal what Tamar experiences inside the Nightmare, whether the lost support affects her trial, or when her cohort will return. (Chapters 2796–2797)
Appearance and personality
Tamar is a beautiful young woman with tan skin, ashen hair, and amber eyes. As an Awakened soldier she usually wears black enchanted armor and carries an oversized two-handed sword; out of armor, her delicate features and fashionable dress make the youth hidden by her battlefield severity much easier to see. She and Rain also bear matching marks associated with the Shadow Clan. (Chapters 1779, 1923, 2290–2295, and 2749)
Her defining public manner is stern, controlled, and economical. Early on, Rain interprets this as haughtiness, but later understands it as a young officer's attempt to contain pressure and trauma. Tamar expects discipline without treating mundane workers as disposable: she interviews the porters personally, catches a falling laborer at great cost to herself, and resists endangering her cohort's Echo even when she may die without it. (Chapters 1779–1784 and 1815–1826)
War turns the practiced facade into genuine hardness, yet affection survives beneath it. Tamar warns Rain when candor would endanger her, smiles rarely enough for the gesture to matter, gives her a joke gift, and invites her judgment when building a Nightmare cohort. Her desire to restore Clan Sorrow is bound to duty and grief rather than simple status, while her careful research shows that courage for her includes preparation rather than reckless confidence. (Chapters 1830–1832, 2204, 2424, 2749–2750, and 2775)
Abilities and Aspect
Invisible footholds
Tamar can create invisible, seemingly solid footholds in empty space. She steps on horizontal platforms to leap over attacks and on vertical ones to throw herself sideways, changing direction without needing terrain beneath her. The platforms can be placed quickly enough for close combat and make her exceptionally compatible with airborne maneuvers. The corpus does not disclose the Ability's formal name, range, essence cost, platform size, duration, or whether other people can stand on them. (Chapter 1923)
Melee specialization
Her Aspect is described as a powerful combat Aspect, and she acts as the defensive center of her first Awakened cohort. Tamar is trained to use heavy weapons, first manifesting a spear as a crutch when injured and later favoring a zweihander. A fully saturated core, refined essence control, and Legacy education let her contend with elite Awakened opponents. The text never states the Aspect's name or rank, so the platforms should not be assigned a more specific origin than the demonstrated Ability. (Chapters 1780, 1826, 1923, and 1999)
Airborne greatsword combat
Sunny forges Tamar a black greatsword whose enchantments amplify its lethality as she moves faster and grant still greater power while she is wholly airborne. Tamar's footholds let her trigger that condition by fighting without touching the ground, turning movement, evasion, and weapon force into one coherent style. This synergy helps her surprise and drive back a Fallen Devil's Echo, although a recovered enemy can still catch and throw her before she resets her position. (Chapters 2422–2424)
Command and preparation
Tamar has practical leadership skills independent of her supernatural power. She conducts surveys, sets marching constraints, evaluates combatants, assumes command after an officer's death, and later assembles a balanced Nightmare cohort. Before entering her Second Nightmare she gathers creature reports, Memory descriptions, and battlefield testimony from everyone she can locate. Her planning improves survival odds but cannot guarantee success; by Chapter 2882, the outcome of the trial remains unknown. (Chapters 1779–1784, 1916, 2424, and 2749–2750)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeper / invisible footholds | 1680, 1780 | Tamar survives the winter solstice in Godgrave with a combat Aspect that creates platforms for aerial movement and defense. |
| Awakened / saturated core | 1784–1999 | Returning through the Gateway advances her to Awakened; later training fully saturates the core and refines her foothold-and-heavy-weapon style. |
Relationships
Rain
Tamar meets Rain while believing her to be an unusually capable mundane porter. Rain's refusal to abandon her after the canyon disaster creates a bond strong enough for Tamar to entrust her with dangerous political advice and later fight beside her throughout the war. In peace, they become close friends: Tamar accompanies Rain as a bodyguard, gives her joke gifts, asks for her judgment, and accepts Epithets on her sword when Rain cannot enter the Nightmare beside her. (Chapters 1779–1832, 1916–2424, and 2749–2797)
Ray and Fleur
Ray and Fleur are Tamar's companions from the Academy and their first winter solstice in Godgrave. Tamar protects the infected Fleur and immediately asks whether Ray survived when rescue arrives. After Awakening they form the core of her survey team, serve together in the Seventh Legion, join Shadow Clan operations, and enter the Second Nightmare as members of the cohort she has prepared. Their shared experience spans every Rank Tamar has attained in the supplied story. (Chapters 1677, 1779–1784, 1916–1923, 2417–2424, and 2742–2749)
Sunny
Sunny first helps extract Tamar and Fleur from Godgrave while concealing his identity as the Lord of Shadows. He later observes Rain's rescue from her shadow, equips Tamar with a greatsword tailored to her airborne style, accepts her as a subject and operative of his Domain, and helps research her chosen Nightmare Seed. He pushes the cohort to enter earlier than planned only after judging Tamar ready, though he also admits that broader danger makes their temporary absence useful. (Chapters 1677–1680, 1815–1832, 2422, and 2749–2750)
Nephis
Tamar initially regards Nephis with the caution expected of a Song vassal meeting its enemy, but trusts her enough to accept healing and rescue. Nephis's flame saves Fleur in Godgrave and later reaches Tamar across the Domain War's final battlefield, healing her among the soldiers of both armies. Their few direct encounters are consequential, but the corpus does not establish a close personal relationship between them. (Chapters 1677–1680 and 2250)
Items
Black greatsword
Tamar's later signature weapon is a black greatsword forged by Sunny. It grows exponentially more lethal as its wielder's speed increases and gains much greater power when its wielder is fully airborne, making it unusually well matched to Tamar's invisible footholds. Rain later maintains two unspecified Epithets on the blade during Tamar's Nightmare. Its formal name, Rank, tier, exact enchantment wording, and fate after those Epithets vanish are not supplied. (Chapters 2422 and 2797)
Armor, spear, and Echo
As a Legacy, Tamar receives high-quality Memories. Her enchanted armor softens injuries that might otherwise have destroyed her arm and later resists enough lightning for her to survive a direct strike, though it is badly scorched. She manifests a beautiful spear while injured and once commands a giant wolf-like Ascended Echo that guards her survey party. The corpus does not give formal names or final dispositions for these assets. (Chapters 1780, 1815–1826, and 2000)
