Aiko
Aiko is an Awakened entrepreneur, Memory broker, and Sunny's longest-serving employee. She survives the Forgotten Shore without becoming a frontline warrior, builds the Brilliant Emporium into a functioning business twice, and later runs the Dark City and the covert operations of the Shadow Clan. Her supernatural powers are modest telekinesis and self-directed movement; her greater influence comes from negotiation, logistics, information work, and an instinct for human behavior sharp enough to expose enemies that defeat formal security measures. (Chapters 303–320, 479–501, 1593–1606, 2260, 2425–2434, 2742)
Biography
A proprietor in the Bright Castle
On the Forgotten Shore, Aiko owned the Bright Castle's only gambling den. The business made tribute easy to pay and gave her an extensive social network, but it also exposed her to clients who used violence to avoid their debts. The Pathfinder Andel made her life especially miserable, and the Castle's other residents looked away because challenging him was dangerous. That experience taught her to survive through information, calculation, and social leverage rather than by pretending that she possessed the strength of a hunter. (Chapters 150–153, 291, 303, 464)
When the Castle's order collapsed, Aiko hid Stev, the keeper of the Memory Market, from factions that wanted the hundred Memories stored in his soul. Sunny saved her from a Guard, then coerced her into revealing Stev's refuge while promising not to harm either of them. Aiko resisted until she was satisfied that her friend would survive, after which the pair followed Sunny to Nephis's faction. Their arrival mattered strategically: Stev's arsenal solved the rebels' shortage of proper weapons, while Aiko's decision helped move a critical resource out of the old Host's reach. (Chapters 303–305)
Aiko joined the Dreamer Army despite having no useful combat Aspect at the time. During the Siege of the Crimson Spire, she carried arrows, helped move wounded Sleepers, and forced herself back to work after patients died in front of her. She also helped load a siege lance too heavy for her small frame. Stev did not survive the return from the Spire, leaving Aiko to mourn one of the friends she had risked herself to protect. Her endurance established the pattern that defines her later work: she is afraid of battle and avoids it when possible, but she does not abandon the necessary task when people depend on her. (Chapters 320–333)
Management after the Forgotten Shore
After returning to civilization and Awakening, Aiko used her talent for organization as Kai's professional manager. She projected enough disciplined severity to protect the friendly idol from unwanted approaches and handled the practical demands of his agency career. Their conversation about life in the Bright Castle also changed Kai's view of strength: hearing what she had endured while others excused their inaction convinced him that weakness could itself become a moral failure, contributing to his decision to challenge the Second Nightmare rather than remain safe in Bastion. (Chapters 464, 479)
Kai's departure threatened part of Aiko's income, so Sunny recruited her to manage his improvised Memory business. She immediately identified the licenses, appraisal, advertising, endorsements, and sales strategy he had ignored, negotiated a ten-percent commission, and turned the Brilliant Emporium from a name and a pile of shards into a legal operation. Aiko streamlined inventory, sales, purchasing, and delivery, secured higher prices, and built a steady client base while Sunny concentrated on hunting and transferring goods between worlds. The success came from commercial expertise rather than an Aspect Ability. (Chapters 479–501)
Before Sunny entered the Second Nightmare, he made a final visit to Aiko about the Emporium and gave Rain her contact as a route to a replacement tutor. When he returned as a Master, they revived and expanded the business. Sunny later asked Aiko to stock warmth, cold resistance, and light-producing Memories before the anticipated disaster in Antarctica, showing that her procurement system could respond to strategic needs as well as ordinary market demand. She continued selling rare shards and maintaining the shop while his absences repeatedly deprived it of its main supplier. (Chapters 536, 558–560, 748–800)
During the Antarctic campaign, Aiko remained in contact with Sunny, monitored changing shard prices, and helped look after Rain while he was deployed. She reassured Rain when official reports and long silences made his fate uncertain, and Sunny understood that his supposed death could revoke his merchant license and endanger the Emporium. The shop survived the campaign, but Sunny's later disappearance from every person's memory removed both its inventory source and the identity of its owner, leaving Aiko with only a vague awareness that an absent partner had once existed. (Chapters 902, 981, 1067, 1092, 1593)
Rebuilding a forgotten partnership
When Sunny returned to civilization after becoming fateless, he found Aiko barely making ends meet. The Brilliant Emporium was close to bankruptcy, her former partnership had become an ungraspable blank, and she had already lost Kai as an agency client when he enlisted. Sunny secretly bought his own business back and hired her again, now presenting himself as Master Sunless. Aiko did not recover her memories of him, but their working dynamic re-formed quickly: she kept the books, demanded supplies and marketing funds, and helped operate the new cafe and Memory boutique inside the Marvelous Mimic. (Chapters 1593–1595)
Aiko's practical control of the establishment extended from moving dishes with telekinesis to designing the boutique's opulent sales floor. She understood that potent Memories functioned as luxury goods, persuaded Sunny to invest in appropriate display cases and furnishings, and helped establish a reputation among affluent Awakened. The resulting business required only occasional high-value sales to remain profitable. Her judgment complemented Sunny's crafting: he could produce remarkable equipment, but she determined how it should be presented, priced, transferred, and trusted by clients. (Chapters 1595–1606)
The cafe side of the Emporium also became a social refuge. Aiko served customers, handled deliveries, maintained relationships with the Beast Farm and the Fire Keepers, and quietly became one of the few regular human presences in Sunny's deliberately modest life. She noticed his changing moods, tolerated dangerous experiments in the basement, and teased him about his increasingly public association with Nephis. Their familiar banter concealed a serious dependency: Sunny planned escape routes that included taking Aiko with him if Valor moved against the shop, while she repeatedly kept the enterprise functioning when he vanished into secret work. (Chapters 1596–1603, 1685, 1804)
When Sunny became the Fire Keepers' Memory Purveyor, Aiko converted an improvised cover into a real brokerage operation. She used contacts from the first Emporium to buy and sell the cohort's Memories, created a business plan at speed, and managed the flow of commissions that followed. By the eve of the Domain War, the Emporium had a loyal clientele, a profitable relationship with Nephis's forces, and a public brand strong enough that closing it caused genuine disappointment. Aiko's delight at wartime demand was comic, but the underlying work supplied soldiers with equipment the royal clan did not provide them. (Chapters 1694–1706, 1747, 1839)
Quartermaster of a hidden Saint
Aiko chose to accompany the Brilliant Emporium into Godgrave rather than remain in Bastion. She recognized the invading army as both a historic event and a vast client base, used backchannel contacts to obtain supplies, and operated from the relative safety of the Ivory Island while the Fire Keepers advanced. Sunny kept her inside the Marvelous Mimic when Mordret's possession threatened the camp and again ordered her to lock herself in when Ki Song's dead began climbing from the Greater Crossing. She followed these orders without argument when his usual levity disappeared, understanding when danger exceeded anything her powers could address. (Chapters 1842–1865, 2199)
Her principal wartime work was logistical. Aiko arranged exchanges among quartermasters, received the Fire Keepers' frontline arsenal, located requested combinations of enchantments, and publicized the Brilliant Emporium across the Sword Army. Each transaction earned a commission, but it also redistributed scarce Memories toward warriors who could use them. Sunny performed the rare forging and enchantment work; Aiko managed inventory, contacts, valuation, and transfers because his banishment from the Nightmare Spell prevented him from receiving ordinary Memories directly. The distinction makes her indispensable without treating commercial knowledge as supernatural power. (Chapters 1747, 1865, 1950, 2041–2049)
Sunny also initiated Aiko into the nascent Shadow Clan by placing the Mark of Shadows on her soul. The external mark gave her darkness-related senses, refined essence control, stealth benefits, and a soul-weapon form; it also let Sunny sense through her and enter her Soul Sea. Because the mark formed a link between them, he could attach a shadow incarnation and double her strength. Aiko objected to being used as an unwilling experiment and demanded that he remove the augmentation, establishing that the boost was optional support from Sunny rather than a permanent increase or part of her innate Aspect. (Chapters 1844–1845, 1948)
Despite being more capable than an average Awakened because of the Forgotten Shore and the Mark, Aiko did not become a soldier. She had gone years without summoning a combat Memory and remained aboard the Ivory Island during the armies' decisive confrontation. Her role was to observe, safeguard the Emporium, and sustain the people who fought. This deliberate distance from battle is not cowardice disguised as inability: the corpus repeatedly shows that she can function under pressure, but also has the judgment to recognize that an Awakened support specialist should not challenge Saints, Great creatures, or Sovereigns directly. (Chapters 1957–1958, 2032, 2199–2210)
From ruined brand to the Dark City
Sunny and Nephis won the Domain War, then staged the Lord of Shadows' betrayal and death to prevent humanity from revering Weaver's heir. The public deception destroyed the Brilliant Emporium's reputation and left Aiko apparently jobless yet again. Sunny revealed that he was alive and brought her to the Forgotten Shore, where he proposed building a peaceful city and a new organization in the ruins. Aiko complained about losing the brand she had cultivated, but followed him into the darkness and accepted a larger enterprise than any shop they had run before. (Chapter 2260)
The Shadow Clan grew into a small network of selected elites embedded across both worlds, while the Dark Castle became its base. Aiko advanced from managing a store to running the Dark City and the organization dwelling there. She coordinated recruitment and training logistics, received field reports, tracked black-market trends, and managed the practical consequences of Sunny's plans while he divided his attention among incarnations, forging, war, and governance. Sunny remained the clan's supernatural center, but even he regarded Aiko's suspicion that something was wrong as reason to convene agents and examine their intelligence. (Chapters 2280, 2415, 2425, 2445–2446)
The new position also gave Aiko the wealth and security she had once only imagined. She invested in numerous Bastion enterprises, including bicycle manufacturing, cultivated merchant and caravan contacts, and could afford the expensive clothes she loved. These investments were not idle indulgence: the same networks exposed market shifts, cult growth, and movements of goods and people that the Shadow Clan needed to monitor. Her ascent from a coerced gambling-den owner to an affluent administrator therefore preserves the entrepreneurial drive of her youth while moving it away from survival and toward institutional power. (Chapters 2425–2427)
The merchant who recognized a monster
On a visit to Bastion, Aiko was unexpectedly left to care for Effie's young son. She complained about becoming a babysitter but gave him a second birthday party, guarded him with Quentin nearby, and took him through the city's commercial districts. The outing reveals a warmer side of her relationships: she is genuinely attached to Effie's family and protects the child even while maintaining her comic obsession with fashion and profit. It also places her commercial instincts in a setting where they become a security tool rather than merely a source of money. (Chapters 2425–2432)
At the gate bazaar, Aiko met a caravan master who had passed every formal inspection. The child disliked his scent, but the decisive clue was economic: a real merchant would haggle, while the supposed trader accepted her proposed price immediately. Aiko inferred that something inhuman was imitating a role it did not understand, signaled Quentin without exposing the suspicion, and summoned a communication mirror while keeping the enemy talking. Her insight came from lived knowledge of bargaining and people, not supernatural detection. (Chapters 2432–2433)
The impostor revealed itself as a vessel of Skinwalker, a Great Terror that had bypassed humanity's existing defenses. Aiko refused to explain its mistake and used the mirror to transmit precise targeting information to Effie over a vast distance. Effie's spear destroyed the vessel before it could harm the child. The discovery triggered martial law and citywide sweeps that uncovered further infestations before they matured, making Aiko's improvised response consequential far beyond the bazaar despite her never attacking the Terror herself. (Chapters 2433–2435)
The incident demonstrates the mature form of Aiko's competence. She knows that she cannot defeat a Great creature, hides her fear behind negotiation, withholds intelligence that would improve its mimicry, and turns specialized allies into a weapon. Her communication Memory, Quentin's protection, Little Ling's senses, Cassie's observation, and Effie's power all matter, but Aiko is the person who interprets the clue and coordinates those pieces. The outcome makes her dangerous without contradicting her consistent refusal to become a frontline combatant. (Chapters 2432–2434)
Coordinating the war over memory
Aiko's reports later identify the Church of the Moon and unusual black-market patterns connected to Asterion. Because knowledge of the Dreamspawn is itself hazardous, she works with incomplete information, compiles evidence from merchant routes, cult activity, and covert agents, and passes it to Sunny, Cassie, and Nephis for interpretation. Her network cannot fight a Sovereign, but it can trace the sleeper cells and social channels through which his influence spreads. That makes administration and information discipline central to humanity's defense. (Chapters 2446, 2554, 2630)
When the Shadow Clan launches a simultaneous strike against Asterion's network, Aiko stands beside Sunny at a shadow map and coordinates dozens of teams across three continents and multiple regions of the Dream Realm. She receives support from Cassie, Jet, Revel, and Sunny's incarnations, but bears much of the operational burden herself. Once every force is in place, Aiko activates the communication Memories and gives the command for all shadows to advance, confirming her authority as the clan's chief organizer rather than merely its bookkeeper. (Chapter 2742)
The campaign does not end Asterion's threat. When the Shadow Clan evacuates its people through the Dream Gate to escape his spreading influence, Aiko remains with the Dark Castle on the Forgotten Shore. By Chapter 2830, Sunny is away, the living castle is preparing to wander to a new location, and Effie secretly sends her son to keep Aiko company. The reference establishes that Aiko is alive and still trusted with both the clan's mobile headquarters and a friend's child, but it does not show her final destination after the castle departs. (Chapters 2829–2830)
Appearance and personality
Aiko is a very petite young woman with short dark hair, brown eyes, and a delicate face. On the Forgotten Shore, fear and exhaustion often suppress the mischievous light normally visible in her expression. In later years she favors sharply tailored modern clothes even in the Dream Realm, moving from practical business suits to costly bespoke ensembles once the Shadow Clan makes her wealthy. She treats fashion as both pleasure and professional signaling, insisting that an effective merchant must look the part. (Chapters 303–304, 479, 1593, 1767, 2425–2427)
Her defining traits are commercial ambition, adaptability, and irreverent humor. Aiko loves money openly, negotiates aggressively, and immediately evaluates wars, cities, and even transportation systems for business opportunities. Yet greed does not erase judgment or loyalty: she protects Stev when his arsenal makes him a target, keeps the Emporium alive through repeated crises, and refuses to teach Skinwalker how it failed. Her jokes about commissions and profiteering coexist with careful work that preserves other people's lives. (Chapters 304–305, 479–501, 1950, 2426–2434)
Aiko describes herself as a lover rather than a fighter and avoids direct combat by choice. She is easily frightened by threats far above her Rank and devises excuses to escape Sunny's more alarming experiments, but fear rarely prevents action when escape would abandon a responsibility. She returns to carrying supplies at the Crimson Spire, accompanies the Emporium into Godgrave, and keeps a Great Terror talking while shielding a child. Courage in her case is practical: knowing exactly what she cannot do, she finds the person, tool, price, or plan that can. (Chapters 320–322, 1842, 1948, 2199, 2432–2434)
She is also deeply loyal beneath a transactional vocabulary. Aiko nags Sunny, bargains over compensation, and complains whenever his apparent deaths destroy her career, but follows him through several rebuilt enterprises and becomes the administrator he trusts with his covert clan. She forms durable friendships with Kai, Effie, Rain, and Little Ling, and her first instinct around dependents is protective even when she masks it with sarcasm. Her loyalty is neither blind nor deferential; she argues with Sunny, demands consent and payment, and remains valuable precisely because she supplies resistance where his judgment is weakest. (Chapters 464, 479, 1593–1603, 1948, 2260, 2428–2434)
Abilities and Aspect
Rank and known Aspect abilities
Aiko is an Awakened, but the corpus does not provide a formal Aspect name, class, or Flaw. Her Dormant Ability is a weak form of telekinesis that moves objects at a distance. She uses it for mundane precision—passing ingredients, floating dishes to customers, handling merchandise—and for heavier efforts such as closing a large gate, though doing so taxes her. The power is useful because it reduces physical handling and lets her work efficiently, not because it grants unrestricted force capable of overpowering higher-Rank enemies. (Chapters 1595–1599, 2428)
Her Awakened Ability moves Aiko herself, allowing her to float or glide. She can combine levitation with telekinetic propulsion to achieve limited flight, carry or lighten another person, cross walls, and avoid terrain without touching it. Her speed remains modest because the self-movement supplies flotation while her weaker Dormant Ability provides directional force. The distinction is explicit in Bastion's argument over whether she is technically flying, and it prevents her mobility from being mistaken for high-speed aerial combat or a broad gravity power. (Chapters 1596, 2260, 2425, 2428)
Practical applications and limitations
Telekinesis makes Aiko an unusually effective waitress, clerk, quartermaster, and material assistant. She can manipulate several light objects while continuing calculations or conversation, move stock without climbing, and work inside workshops where direct handling would be inconvenient. Levitation lets her navigate the vertical spaces of Bastion and the Dark Castle and remain mobile without suitable footwear or roads. These applications are representative of how she actually uses her Aspect: work, travel, evasion, and coordination rather than combat. (Chapters 1595–1599, 1685, 2425–2429, 2572)
The abilities have clear limits. Her telekinesis is described as weak, a massive gate leaves her winded, and her combined flight is not fast. Nothing in the corpus shows her lifting battlefield-scale masses, overpowering another Awakened with force, or using telekinesis as a lethal attack. She remains physically an Awakened and explicitly recognizes that a Great Terror could kill her. When threatened by Skinwalker, she relies on concealment, a communication Memory, Quentin, and Effie's distant strike rather than attempting an unsupported feat with her Aspect. (Chapters 1595–1596, 2425, 2428, 2432–2434)
Mark of Shadows
The Mark of Shadows is an external Attribute placed on Aiko by Soul Serpent, not an evolution of her Aspect. It lets her see in absolute darkness, move stealthily through shadows, sense their movement, refine her essence control, and manifest the lesser soul serpent as a weapon. It also marks her as Sunny's vassal, allowing his Supreme senses to follow her and giving him access to her Soul Sea, which protects clan members from Mordret's infiltration. Their personal knowledge of Sunny gives them high resistance to Asterion's plague, while the Mark rejects those who nevertheless succumb; it does not make them absolutely immune. The precise weapon shape Aiko prefers is not shown. (Chapters 1731, 1844–1845, 2280, 2418–2421, 2829)
The mark permits Sunny to augment Aiko by attaching a shadow, temporarily doubling her strength. This effect depends on his intervention and can be withdrawn immediately; it is not passive strength and does not raise her Rank. The wider Mark also improves essence handling rather than creating infinite reserves, and the weapon it manifests remains appropriate to the bearer's Rank. Aiko's rejection of an unannounced fusion additionally establishes a personal limitation on use: the capability exists, but she expects consent instead of treating her connection to Sunny as unrestricted ownership. (Chapters 1948, 2280, 2418–2421)
Training, tradecraft, and command
Aiko survived the Forgotten Shore and later trains with the Shadow Clan, making her more dangerous and composed than a typical Awakened even though she avoids fighting. The corpus does not credit her with a named martial art, exceptional weapon mastery, or an advanced combat Aspect. Her demonstrated defensive method is tradecraft: recognize inconsistencies, preserve uncertainty, signal allies covertly, use Memories intelligently, and delay an enemy until overwhelming support arrives. The Skinwalker incident is her clearest representative victory because it depends on every one of those skills without inventing combat mechanics. (Chapters 320–333, 1958, 2280, 2432–2434)
Her organizational reach becomes a form of command power but remains non-supernatural. Aiko evaluates agents, runs investigations, compiles reports, manages commerce, and synchronizes clandestine assaults through communication Memories. She can coordinate simultaneous operations because Sunny's information network, Cassie's intelligence, trained field leaders, and prepared communication tools give her the necessary picture; she is not omniscient and cannot command at range through her Aspect alone. This separation between infrastructure and magic is central to understanding her late role. (Chapters 2424–2425, 2446, 2554, 2630, 2742)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dormant Sleeper | 320–333 | Aiko survives the Dark City and Crimson Spire campaign as a Sleeper. |
| Awakened | By 464 | She returns from the Forgotten Shore as an Awakened; her two Aspect Abilities are described much later, but do not represent another formal rank change. |
Relationships
Sunny
Sunny first saves Aiko and then frightens her into helping him recruit Stev. What begins as coercive cooperation becomes a durable partnership because their strengths complement each other. Sunny supplies dangerous inventory, rare crafting, transportation between worlds, and eventually supernatural protection; Aiko supplies legality, pricing, contacts, branding, logistics, and the willingness to tell him when an idea is commercially absurd. He repeatedly disappears or destroys the public identity of their enterprise, and she repeatedly rebuilds the practical structure around his next ambition. (Chapters 303–305, 479–501, 1593–1606, 2260)
Their employer–employee language never fully describes the trust involved. Sunny leaves Rain's welfare and the Emporium in Aiko's hands, plans to evacuate her if Valor threatens the shop, marks her as one of his earliest vassals, and later relies on her to run the Shadow Clan. Aiko follows him back to the Forgotten Shore while continuing to demand pay, consent, and explanations. Their banter allows both to treat loyalty as a business arrangement, but her late authority over his city and covert organization shows that Sunny regards her as a partner in governance as much as an assistant. (Chapters 558–560, 902, 1804, 1844, 1948, 2280, 2742)
Kai and Stev
Stev is Aiko's friend from the Bright Castle and the person she risks hiding when his Memory arsenal makes him a target. She refuses to betray him until Sunny promises safety and accompanies him into Nephis's faction, but Stev dies during the Crimson Spire campaign. Kai survives and later employs Aiko as his manager. Her account of Andel and the compromises of Castle life helps him choose Ascension, while his decision also ends her secure agency job and indirectly opens the way for her partnership with Sunny. (Chapters 303–305, 320–333, 464, 479)
Effie and Little Ling
Aiko and Effie share a friendship built on Forgotten Shore history, sharp teasing, and practical cooperation between the Brilliant Emporium and the Beast Farm. Effie trusts Aiko with Little Ling even when that trust takes the form of escaping before Aiko can refuse. Aiko becomes “Auntie,” gives the boy a private birthday celebration, protects him from Skinwalker, and is later chosen as his refuge when the Shadow Clan evacuates from Asterion's influence. The repeated custody decisions show that Effie's joking confidence rests on serious faith in Aiko's judgment. (Chapters 1698, 1839, 2428–2434, 2830)
Rain and the Shadow Clan
Sunny initially asks Aiko to watch over Rain and arrange a new tutor if necessary. She remains a reassuring contact during Antarctica, later enters the Shadow Clan alongside Rain, and helps oversee operations in which Sunny's sister participates. By the time of the war against Asterion, Aiko coordinates Rain, Tamar, Quentin, Revel, and multiple covert teams rather than relating to them as fellow combatants. Her authority comes from operational trust and information control, while the field leaders retain tactical responsibility for their own missions. (Chapters 558, 902, 981, 1844, 2424, 2742)
Nephis and Cassie
Aiko joins Nephis's rebellion on the Forgotten Shore and later brokers the Memories of her Fire Keepers. She also becomes an amused observer of Sunny's romance with the princess, misunderstanding enough of their private life to accuse him of scandal while still working to preserve the public cover around Nephis's soulbound sword. Cassie uses Aiko's reports in the information war and helps provide the intelligence framework for her operations. Aiko is therefore outside the cohort's intimate strategic circle, but her logistical and investigative work repeatedly turns their decisions into functioning systems. (Chapters 305, 1694–1706, 1747, 1835–1839, 2554, 2742)
Items
Aiko uses a silver hand-mirror Memory issued to Shadow Clan agents for remote communication and observation. A matching mirror can carry conversation and reflect the scene in front of one bearer to another, which lets Aiko provide Effie with targeting data against Skinwalker. The mirror is a crafted operational tool rather than part of Aiko's Aspect, and the name “Call Mommy” is an improvised joke she gives it during the confrontation, not its formal Memory name. (Chapters 2433–2434)
She also carries concealed protective charms and ordinary business equipment such as a messenger bag, documents, abacus, and coin purse. These support her public role but are not individually described with stable names or complete enchantments. Her Mark of Shadows can manifest as a weapon, but it is an Attribute born in her soul rather than an inventory item. No item slug is assigned to Aiko in the supplied catalog, so this article does not create unsupported item links. (Chapters 1593–1599, 1767, 2425–2426)
