Stev

Stev was the caretaker of the Bright Castle's Memory Market and one of the healers who supported the Dreamer Army at the Crimson Spire. His direct manner concealed a notably fair merchant: even when a sale favored him, he warned customers against buying equipment he believed was worthless. (Chapters 172–174 and 320)

Biography

Keeper of the Memory Market

Stev managed the hall where the Bright Castle stored and traded its enormous collection of Memories. Nearly twenty-five and therefore old by Dark City standards, he greeted Sunny with blunt mockery but responded to the Sleeper's return insult with a thunderous laugh. He was bored enough to welcome unusual company and candid enough that Kai, whose Flaw exposed lies, trusted him as a merchant. (Chapter 172)

When Kai selected ten apparently poor Memories for Sunny, Stev tried to prevent the purchase despite standing to profit from it. He called the damaged onyx armor unusable trash and pressed Kai to reconsider rather than exploit a friend. Sunny nevertheless completed the bargain, later discovering value in the broken armor that Stev could not have known; the episode established Stev's honest judgment without making him responsible for the Memory's hidden nature. Hiding, service, and death at the Spire

After the Bright Castle changed hands, Stev hid with Aiko. Carrying roughly a hundred Memories in his soul made him a target, and Aiko protected his location until Sunny found them while preparing an operation against the Blood Lord. Their conduct shows an existing personal loyalty: Aiko challenged Sunny's intentions before leading him to Stev, while Stev followed Sunny's signals when the surrounding guards were found murdered. At the Crimson Spire, Stev served in the makeshift hospital among Sleepers whose Aspect Abilities could heal. The battle produced far more immediate deaths than treatable wounds, limiting what the healers could accomplish, and Stev did not survive the siege. When the survivors later counted their losses, Aiko explicitly named him among the dead; later references to his influence on her Memory business describe a legacy of knowledge, not a return to life. Appearance and personality

Stev was extremely tall and obese, with a round face and cheerful eyes. His size was exceptional in the food-scarce Dark City, and his laughter was loud enough to match it. He spoke abrasively and traded insults readily, but his amusement with Sunny and his refusal to mislead Kai show a sociable, fundamentally fair disposition beneath the coarse presentation. He was also trusted and useful beyond commerce. Aiko risked herself to hide him, and he accepted medical duty during an almost hopeless siege. The corpus does not preserve his private ambitions or explain why he learned healing; it supports loyalty, practical competence, and honesty more clearly than any broader psychological portrait. Healing ability

Stev possessed an Aspect Ability related to healing and was assigned to the Dreamer Army's hospital. No Aspect name, rank, activation method, cost, range, or precise effect is disclosed, and the hospital scene shows the ability's practical limit: it could help wounded fighters but could not save those killed outright. The corpus does not show Stev using it in combat. (Chapter 320)

Memory expertise

As arsenal caretaker, Stev could appraise the apparent condition and usefulness of Memories and manage a collection worth a fortune. His assessment of the damaged onyx armor was reasonable from the information available—its runes were broken and even the Spell could not fully describe it—although Sunny later restored it after advancing. This was professional experience rather than a confirmed supernatural identification power. (Chapters 172–174, 182, and 376)

Relationships

• Aiko: Aiko called Stev her friend, concealed him when his inventory placed him in danger, and mourned him after the Spire. Her later skill at selling Memories was attributed partly to having been close to him. (Chapters 304–305, 320, 333, and 1605)
• Kai: Kai introduced Sunny to Stev and trusted him enough to buy through his market. Stev's attempt to stop Kai from purchasing bad equipment shows concern stronger than immediate profit. (Chapters 172–174)
• Sunny: Their first exchange was mutually insulting but friendly. Sunny later sought Stev because of the Memories he carried and drew him into the operation surrounding the hidden Blood Lord. (Chapters 172–174 and 304–305)
