Riv

Riv is the leader of Slough's red colour gang and an ambitious Grey Elephants subordinate. His effort to escape that hierarchy through a private ransom scheme turns a school rivalry into a gang attack, endangers Xin Clove, and ultimately leads his own superiors to kill him.

Biography

Ambition beneath the Grey Elephants

Riv controls the red colour gang while hoping to graduate into a lucrative senior position with the Grey Elephants. After his forces retreat when the Underdogs disrupt a planned gang conflict, he defends the failure by reporting their unusual search for a green-haired youth. He tries to ingratiate himself with stronger figures and participates in the Grey Elephants' schemes, but his position remains subordinate: Brandon treats him as expendable, and Raven reins him in when his temper threatens operations. Riv's relationship with Tiffany gives that frustration a reckless outlet. To satisfy her desire for revenge against Xin, he sends gang members after the student, orders an assault on Westbridge, and has the captured Mr Root beaten. He then kidnaps Xin and plans to ransom the mayor's daughter without Brandon's approval, ignoring his boss's calls because the money would let him and Tiffany leave Slough. The choice converts a school grievance into a betrayal of both the Grey Elephants and the public order they expect their colour gangs to maintain. (Chapters 193–208)

Gary Dem and Jayden Tiger defeat Riv's group and rescue Xin. Riv abandons Tiffany while trying to flee, but Gary stops him and hands both captors to the Grey Elephants when Brandon arrives. Brandon presents the abduction as an unauthorized act, then crushes Riv's skull in front of Gary and the others. Riv's death protects the senior gang's political position and demonstrates the consequence of seeking independence through a plan he could neither control nor conceal. Riv wants the wealth and rank that Brandon's organization can provide, while resenting the work and disrespect imposed on him. His unauthorized ransom plot is a bid to leave that dependence; Brandon answers the betrayal by killing him.

Gary Dem and Xin Clove
