Brandon Trunk

Brandon Trunk is the effective boss and strongest founder of the Grey Elephants, one of Slough's two dominant gangs before the Howlers' rise. His authority rests on hand-to-hand strength, organization, and calculated submission to larger powers rather than any demonstrated Altered ability.

Biography

Building power beneath stronger patrons

Brandon co-founds the Grey Elephants with Raven and a third leader, and their hand-to-hand ability rapidly raises the gang's position in Slough. Although all three founders share the title of leader, Brandon is openly treated as the real boss. That local power has limits: when Sin demands obedience, Brandon accepts an experimental black Altered solution but refuses to inject an untested product into himself, leaving Raven to choose a subject. He is similarly pragmatic when Jayden Tiger confronts the gang during Xin's kidnapping, releasing Tiffany because fighting an elite Altered offers no gain and no reliable path to victory. (Chapters 111–113 and 208–214)

The Slough gang war and death

Brandon initially laughs off reports that five teenagers dismantled the Pincers and concentrates on destroying Damion's Underdogs. When Damion attacks the Grey Elephants during the resulting war, Brandon appears to flee, but the retreat is a prepared lure into an underground car park: corrupt police let him pass while an armed ambush closes around Damion. Brandon admits that his reputation as the strongest survives partly because those who see the gang's hidden methods do not live to report them. The trap fails against Damion's beast-weapon axes, which cut through Brandon's riot shield and decapitate him, ending the Grey Elephants' old leadership rather than giving Brandon the revenge he sought. (Chapters 250–302)

Appearance and personality

Brandon is a man in his mid-thirties whose detailed build and clothing are not consistently described. He is confident enough to mock implausible reports and ruthless enough to sacrifice outsiders, yet he is not needlessly reckless: he tests the risks of Sin's solution on someone else, yields to Jayden, and relies on preparation against Damion. That caution serves self-preservation rather than mercy, and it cannot compensate when his information and equipment are outclassed. (Chapters 111–113, 214, and 250–302)

Powers and abilities

Hand-to-hand combat and physical strength

Brandon is identified as the strongest of three founders whose gang rose through hand-to-hand combat. He can physically dominate ordinary captives and has enough reputation to command veteran gang members, but the corpus never shows him receiving or activating an Altered transformation. His final confrontation establishes the upper limit of his ordinary-human durability: a conventional riot shield and his physical strength provide no defense against Damion's specialized axes. (Chapters 111, 212–214, and 302)

Gang strategy and institutional influence

Brandon coordinates large operations, maintains corrupt contacts within the police, and turns apparent flight into a prepared multi-person ambush. These methods are effective only while secrecy and numbers remain intact. Jayden's individual power forces him to concede without fighting, while Damion's gear defeats the strongest trap Brandon demonstrates. (Chapters 214 and 302)

Relationships

  • Raven: Raven is Brandon's fellow founder and closest surviving leader. They plan the gang's response to the Howlers and Underdogs together, although Brandon leaves the risky choice of testing Sin's solution to him. (Chapters 111–113 and 250)
  • Sin: Sin treats the Grey Elephants as subordinates within the Phoenix Gang's network. Brandon complies with his demand to use an experimental solution while privately managing the risk. (Chapters 111–113)
  • Damion: Brandon's principal rival in Slough. His concealed ambush briefly reverses Damion's pursuit, but Damion kills him before the trap can secure victory. (Chapters 250–302)
  • Jayden Tiger: Brandon recognizes that challenging Jayden would be both dangerous and pointless, so he releases Tiffany rather than escalate the encounter. (Chapter 214)
