Gary Dem
Gary Dem is the founder and public face of the Howlers, a former gang courier whose accidental transformation into a System-bearing werewolf draws him into Slough's underworld and the hidden conflict among Altereds, werewolves, vampires, and their progenitor. His strength grows through levels, classes, pack bonds, consumption, and later Qi training, but his defining struggle is moral rather than mechanical: he repeatedly has to decide how much violence he can accept in order to protect his family, pack, city, and eventually other supernatural peoples.
Biography
Slough, Eton High, and the Underdogs
Gary begins as a sixteen-year-old Eton High student who dreams of becoming an Altered but has neither the physical pedigree nor the money to pursue that life. He joins the Underdogs in secret and works as a transporter because his family is struggling with bills; the gang frightens him, but the payment offers a way to help his mother and sister when ordinary work is scarce. That mixture of fear, ambition, and responsibility is already characteristic: he romanticizes strength, yet his immediate goal is not status for its own sake but a safer life for Amy and Maya. A high-value delivery turns that compromise into catastrophe when rival gangsters ambush him, stab him, and cause the living cargo in his case to bite him, granting him the Werewolf System. (Chapters 1–6)
The System heals Gary, sharpens his senses, assigns meat-heavy daily tasks, and warns him that he must survive the next full moon. At first he treats it partly like the games he knows through Tom, testing statistics and chasing experience, but its bloodlust messages and the Underdogs' demand for the missing package make the danger personal. Tom discovers the truth and becomes Gary's first confidant; Gary still conceals his gang work, yet Tom's practical concern gives him a human counterweight to a System that rewards aggression. Gary's early heart-rate transformations also expose a central weakness: anger and protective panic make him far stronger, but they can push his body and judgment beyond his conscious control. (Chapters 4–27)
Kai recruits Gary as the visible leader of a new teenage gang, the Howlers, while handling much of its planning. Gary is initially an improbable figurehead—an inexperienced student with green hair and an unreliable temper—but he grows into the role because threats against his friends and family reliably overcome his fear. His accidental turning of Billy makes that protectiveness more complicated. Billy becomes an uncontrolled Omega, murders his own parents, tracks Gary's home, and forces Gary to confront the fact that his bite can create victims as well as allies. Gary's pursuit is therefore driven by self-defense, concern for Amy, and guilt over the monster he created, not merely the System's promise of a pack reward. (Chapters 36–71)
On the full moon, Gary loses conscious control and transforms into a brown-furred werewolf. Even in that state, his bond with Tom appears to guide him toward protecting his friends, but the experience terrifies him because he remembers none of it and cannot be certain whom he might hurt. Jayden gives the exhausted teenager shelter without knowing the full truth, and Gary survives the rest of the night by rationing meat against an Energy pool that is almost empty. The aftermath changes his priorities: he stops treating transformation as a fantasy version of becoming an Altered and begins preparing for the next moon as a danger that must be controlled. (Chapters 78–93)
Gary's family remains the clearest trigger for both his courage and his brutality. When Amy calls for help from a karaoke room, his heart rate rises naturally past the threshold that doubles his physical abilities, and he kills the men threatening her with Claw Drain. He is horrified that the System rewards the deaths, yet he disposes of the bodies and tells himself the violence was for his family. Later confrontations with Billy deepen the same conflict: the death of an innocent woman makes Gary blame himself for pursuing Billy into a desperate position, but he still chooses to fight because leaving Billy alive would create more victims. Defeating Billy finally closes Gary's first self-created crisis and earns him the chance to formalize his path as a Warrior, a class Tom recommends because Gary repeatedly leads from the front even when doing so may kill him. (Chapters 99–103, 162–183)
The Howlers Take Shape
With Billy gone, Gary turns from surviving the underworld to changing it. He and the Howlers attack the Pincers after discovering their exploitation of vulnerable young women. Gary's decision to turn Olivia rather than kill her is pragmatic—her authority can stop the remaining Pincers from attacking—but he uses the new Pack Rules to forbid attacks on Howlers and their families, unauthorized killing, betrayal, and uncontrolled creation of more werewolves. Those rules reveal both his compassion and his willingness to impose supernatural control when he believes it will prevent another Billy. Becoming Alpha also changes the balance with Kai: Gary now possesses formal power over the pack, while Kai remains the strategist who helps him navigate lies, logistics, and consequences. (Chapters 222–247)
As the Howlers take territory, Gary has to perform leadership before older gang bosses who see only a masked teenager. The money from their expansion relieves the pressure that first drove him to the Underdogs, but it does not free him from secrecy; Amy and Tom increasingly recognize that his life extends far beyond school and the pool club. Gary attends inter-gang meetings, represents the Howlers under scrutiny, and learns that authority involves protecting businesses and civilians rather than simply winning fights. He still relies heavily on Kai to construct plans, yet his own preference is increasingly clear: he wants the Howlers to become strong enough that people under them are safer, not a new version of the organizations that exploited him. (Chapters 245–270)
The war with the Underdogs brings Gary's hidden life back to its source. Damion captures and starves him, correctly connecting the missing package, Gary's transformation, and the Howlers' rise; Kai then reveals that he created the Howlers to overthrow his own father. Gary survives the final conflict through his pack, his rapidly developing Warrior skills, and Last Stand, but cannot save Kirk, whose fatal wound leaves him apologizing in tears after carrying him from the battlefield. Victory ends Damion's control and establishes the Howlers in Slough, yet Gary experiences it as another proof that leadership does not let him save everyone. He later uses Alpha Bite on Kai, turning the person who made him a leader into a werewolf under his pack, a bond that formalizes their dependence while giving Kai the power to keep fighting beside him. (Chapters 295–311, 328–356)
The AFA and the Notsburg Campaign
Admission to the Altered Fighting Academy gives Gary the future he once believed was impossible. He enters under the public fiction that his transformations are an Altered form, deliberately conceals the full extent of his control, and uses the academy to improve his technique and build a legitimate career. The opportunity matters for more than childhood ambition: public success gives him a way to earn money, normalize his strength, and build influence without exposing the Howlers' supernatural core. At the same time, academy life puts him among genuinely trained fighters such as Numba, Izzy, and Apollo, forcing him to supplement System statistics with observation and practice. (Chapters 360–417)
Gary cannot separate that public career from the gang he leads. The Howlers' expansion toward Notsburg brings them into conflict with stronger organizations and with Midwak, an experienced Omega whose knowledge exposes how little Gary understands about werewolf society. When Midwak threatens his pack and proves stronger in direct combat, Gary's class promotes from Warrior to Dark Warrior, doubling his Energy at night and raising his offensive skills. Gary wins only with Olivia's intervention, upgraded abilities, and his refusal to stay down; afterward, he raises himself to Rook grade and brings Midwak into the pack rather than executing him. The choice is risky, but it reflects Gary's repeated preference for turning enemies into constrained allies when killing them is not necessary. (Chapters 552–583)
As an AFC rookie, Gary becomes a visible success from Slough and helps transform the city's public image. His fighting income and the Howlers' businesses improve conditions that once made a thousand-dollar gang delivery seem worth dying for. Yet celebrity never replaces his pack responsibilities: he continues allocating Pawn Points, strengthening Beta wolves, and investigating threats that conventional authorities cannot explain. By the time he enters lower-tier cities to trace the black substance linked to new conflicts, he is simultaneously an academy prospect, a business figure, and the concealed Alpha of a growing supernatural family—roles whose competing demands eventually make a normal sporting career impossible. (Chapters 615–722)
The Scavengers and the War for Slough
Investigating the Scavengers and NIRV-linked activity draws Gary and the Howlers into battles against specialized retrieval forces. Gary's instinct is to confront danger personally, even when revealing his full transformation risks connecting the famous fighter to the masked gang leader. That exposure contributes to the White Rose case against him. Rather than allow every Howler to bear the consequences, Gary accepts imprisonment while enemies move against Slough, choosing legal captivity in the hope that his people can endure without him. The decision tests the organization he and Kai built: Gary is its emotional center, but its survival depends on whether others can act while he is absent. (Chapters 691–797)
In the White Rose prison, Gary's urgency to return to Slough overwhelms any willingness to wait for release. He allies with Blackjack and challenges Ice, not simply to dominate the prison but to prove that escape is possible and recruit enough strength to achieve it. The System explicitly rewards the impossible objective, while fights and consumption let Gary restore himself and distribute Pawn Points to his companions. He becomes more ruthless inside—attacking rivals for experience and consuming defeated Altereds—but directs that growth toward breaking out with others rather than abandoning them. His leadership persuades Ice, a man who believes he deserves confinement, to risk freedom for a cause beyond his guilt. (Chapters 808–893)
Gary escapes, reaches Queen grade, and returns to a Slough devastated by the Phoenix Gang. He diverts from the hospital to pull civilians from rubble and reassure frightened residents, demonstrating how completely his idea of “family” has expanded from Amy and Maya to the city itself. In battle with Sin, he discovers that consuming a powerful Mythical Altered can grant lasting traits: eating the phoenix's body gives him fire and heat resistance and an optional fire attribute for his attacks. He kills Sin as a warning to the other Kings, but only after telling him that sending Gary to prison created the strength that defeated him. The victory ends the immediate invasion and reunites Gary with Maya, who recognizes that the frightened boy she left carrying family burdens has become the protector who rebuilt their home. (Chapters 913–931)
Kings, Harvor, and the One Gang
After Slough's recovery, Gary learns more of the Dem family's past and of the System that shaped him, including his father's connection to the people behind it. Those revelations complicate his identity: what felt like a random accident is bound to older supernatural plans, while his public role as Slough's savior makes withdrawal impossible. Gary nevertheless tries to reclaim ordinary relationships, spending time with Xin and his reunited family, but the surviving Kings and the One Gang keep turning personal ties into leverage. When Jayden becomes a target, Gary's loyalty to Xin and gratitude toward the man who once sheltered him drive him into a conflict that Kai would never choose on strategic grounds alone. (Chapters 931–985)
Harvor's power exposes the limits of Gary's Queen-grade Dark Warrior form. Gary enters the AFC arena conflict because he cannot leave Jayden and the others to One Gang, then fights through opponents whose strength is rooted in NIRV's attempt to reproduce dragons. Harvor's transformation triggers a System quest too advanced for Gary's current level, and Jayden's loss turns the confrontation into another case where arriving and fighting are not enough to save someone he loves. Gary refuses to let that failure end the struggle, repeatedly returning after injuries and allowing allies to carry him when his body finally gives out. (Chapters 985–1037)
With Daphne's help, Gary unlocks the Shadow Ash Lycan transformation and later its fire-and-moon expression, giving him Ember Dash, Infernal Roar, Volcanic Burst, Fire Storm Howl, Smoke Veil, and Combustion Bite. He uses that power alongside the Howlers rather than treating it as a solitary solution, and the fight ultimately raises him to King grade. The achievement maximizes his physical statistics and improves Alpha Bite, but it does not make him invulnerable; it instead places him at the level where every hidden faction now treats his decisions as potentially world-changing. Gary emerges from the One Gang conflict with greater power, more public attention than he wants, and a firmer conviction that strength must be used to keep his people from becoming collateral in another King's ambitions. (Chapters 1037–1139)
Ironfang, Alpha Bonds, and the Old Pack
The Altered Hunters' assault on Lupus's pack forces Gary to confront werewolves whose history predates the Howlers. He initially sees Lupus as an enemy tied to attacks on his friends, but the conflict reveals that the Hunters, the old pack, and the vampires each carry grievances that cannot be reduced to good and evil. Gary's instinct remains to protect his own people, yet he is increasingly willing to negotiate after battle rather than perpetuate a blood feud. This culminates in his dealings with the Vampire King: even after pushing himself to exhaustion, he listens when the King claims to want a conversation, because another war would cost lives on every side. (Chapters 1157–1200)
Gary's class evolves from Dark Warrior to Abyssal Warlord after the vampire conflict. At night its expanded Health and Energy pools triple, Shadow Regeneration heals him passively, and Night Breaker can create a small daytime zone that grants the same nocturnal effects. These gains make him a more credible counterweight to Lupus and the vampire leadership, but Gary uses the new position to pursue alliances, not supremacy. His willingness to work with Blackjack and other vampires contrasts with Lupus's inherited hostility and later becomes essential when both races face enemies that profit from keeping them divided. (Chapters 1175–1206)
Missions in Ruin City place Gary beside Altered Hunters, old-pack survivors, and vampires whose loyalties remain uncertain. He fights Ironfang forces, sees how pack bonds can be weaponized, and learns that Alpha status carries instincts and obligations the System did not invent. His relationship with Lupus shifts from rival Alpha to estranged family after the Dem bloodline connection becomes clear. Gary still opposes Lupus's methods and cannot excuse the deaths caused by his pack, but he begins to recognize that Lupus genuinely regards werewolves as family and fears a future in which their hidden race is exterminated. That recognition makes Gary search for a negotiated end even when his own allies expect an inevitable duel. (Chapters 1227–1333)
The Progenitor's Trial and a Fractured Howlers
Gary chooses Xin as his Luna, turning their romantic bond into the central Alpha–Luna partnership of the Howlers. Her Protector-derived Lunar Sentinel form can restrain his berserk Nocturne Apex state, while her Wolf's Song and foresight strengthen the wider pack. Their bond gives Gary access to a True Alpha transformation, but also exposes a disturbing loss of control: in that state his instincts can act while his conscious mind merely observes. Rather than assume more power is always desirable, Gary and Xin train together to learn when she must stop him and how their linked forms can be used without sacrificing his judgment. (Chapters 1329–1342)
Gary's attempt to avoid fighting Lupus draws out Unzoku, the first werewolf and source of the curse. Unzoku openly seeks death and tries to force Gary into becoming a mindless Alpha who will start the war Gary refused. Gary survives because the Celestial resistance gained from Harvor's dragon essence rejects part of Unzoku's control, and the Dragon Ash Lycan form lets him move through the remaining restraint. Although Gary cannot defeat Unzoku, he forces the progenitor to spend enough power that he retreats. The encounter confirms that Gary's refusal to kill Lupus is not weakness: it is a direct rejection of the cycle Unzoku designed. (Chapters 1345–1353)
Unzoku retaliates by turning Kai into a third Alpha, aiming at the relationship most capable of breaking Gary. Gary responds by refusing the ancient rule that Alphas must destroy one another. He pins down a panicked Kai, insists that Howler loyalty rests on choice rather than pack law, and permits Marie to leave his System pack so Kai will not face the full moon alone. Losing his strategist forces Gary to assume more of the planning Kai once carried, while his effort to learn Qi from Innu opens a path to controlling werewolf Energy without relying entirely on fixed System skills. His early failures frustrate him precisely because the System has made other growth feel automatic, but he persists until he can move Energy without transforming. (Chapters 1357–1383)
The full-moon invasion turns Slough into a battlefield among Lupus's pack, the Howlers, and multiple outside forces. Gary fights while unable to rely on an uncomplicated division between friend and enemy: Blake helps him against Ylva, Lupus's soldiers are being driven by pack commands, and Kai returns as an Alpha subject to the same compulsion. Gary, Kai, and Lupus ultimately clash in their True Alpha states while Xin and Marie try to save the fighters around them. Gary's Nocturne Apex power gives him elemental force, but Lupus remains physically superior and the Alphas' instincts prevent cooperation. At the crisis point, the Bookkeeper's medallion activates and removes all three from the battlefield, ending the battle without resolving their conflict. (Chapters 1391–1516)
The Other World and the Vampire Villages
Gary awakens in an unfamiliar world without his normal System, advanced forms, or Alpha eyes. Kai and Lupus have been transported with him and reduced to Omega status as well, forcing three rivals to work together under a new shared quest interface. Gary's first concern is Slough, but there is no route home except completing the trial. He therefore accepts Lupus as a temporary companion, and their dependence slowly makes the other Alpha's motives harder to dismiss as excuses. Hunger, reduced powers, and an unfamiliar economy return Gary to something close to his early vulnerability, while his learned combat instincts and Qi remain useful even without the System doing everything for him. (Chapters 1524–1539)
The trio meets Steve and becomes entangled with werewolf packs whose conflict predates their own. Gary sees communities in which werewolves are not a hidden mutation but families with their own leaders, responsibilities, and fears. Encounters with Red Wing knights and the legendary Gary Bluebird reveal that Gary's name and Dem ancestry connect to an older history than he knew. Rather than exploit that connection, Gary repeatedly gives his name honestly and uses his strength to earn trust, showing how far he has moved from the frightened courier who survived by mixing lies with partial truth. (Chapters 1541–1619)
Vampire villages and renewed pack warfare reproduce the divisions Gary knows from his own era. The shared System forces Gary, Kai, and Lupus to make choices among competing Alphas, but Gary resists treating either race as uniformly hostile. He protects civilians, helps investigate disappearances, and fights beside people whose descendants or institutions will later become his enemies. The trial's conflict with Unzoku's curse also shows what the historical packs failed to understand: the full-moon frenzy is an imposed bloodline mechanism, not proof that werewolves are naturally incapable of coexistence. (Chapters 1620–1688)
During the final trial, Gary and his companions help the old packs survive the curse's activation and witness the beginnings of the Werewolf System, pack restrictions, and specialized weapons later inherited only in fragments. Gary tells Jack his full name, effectively closing a family loop between the history he has lived and the records that shaped him. The completed trial then shows the original disastrous timeline and the intervention of a true dragon, clarifying both the ancient curse and the exceptional energy Gary inherited from consuming Harvor. When the trio returns two months after disappearing, Gary, Kai, and Lupus agree that their packs can no longer waste themselves fighting: Unzoku, not one another, is the source of the cycle. (Chapters 1693–1716)
The Last War and the New Family
Back in Slough, Gary reunites with Xin and learns that Lupus's surviving wolves have joined the Howlers during the Alphas' absence. He publicly treats Lupus as an ally and promises to defend him against vampires, a reversal made possible by what they endured together. Peace remains fragile: White is missing, the Dark Guild has been attacked, and ravenous Glutton Werewolves begin appearing across the country. Gary initially tries to resolve the crisis through investigation and diplomacy with the vampires because he understands how easily Unzoku can make the mutated attacks look like a Howlers offensive. (Chapters 1716–1748)
The Glutton condition spreads through consumption and eventually overtakes Midwak, overriding his ordinary class and pack identity with endless hunger. Gary refuses to write off his transformed pack member, even while vampires and Howlers are forced into a battlefield alliance. Using the medallion restores Midwak by breaking Unzoku's connection, but damages the artifact; when Rowa repairs it, Gary wants to use it on every victim, while Kai insists it must be preserved for the source. Gary reluctantly accepts that leadership may require ending immediate threats he cannot individually save, yet he continues looking for a cure rather than treating the Gluttons as disposable monsters. (Chapters 1751–1809)
Unzoku attacks Lupus in Ruin City, but the older Alpha's new Qi, armor, and experience let him resist control and survive long enough to warn the Howlers. Gary, Kai, Xin, Lupus, former enemies, Altered fighters, and vampire allies converge on Tower Land, where Unzoku is consuming Gluttons to restore himself. Gary initially withholds his strongest powers because each option carries a cost to the pack. He and Kai instead coordinate ordinary forms and weapons, with Gary deliberately absorbing devastating blows under Last Stand so Kai can plant the medallion in Unzoku's chest. The plan briefly suppresses the red mist and regeneration, proving Unzoku can be weakened, but the progenitor tears the artifact free and resumes control. (Chapters 1810–1833)
When Unzoku paralyzes both Alphas, Gary orders Xin and Marie to carry Kai away and evacuate the Howlers. The order appears suicidal, but it clears the area for the combination Gary had avoided: Dragon Ash Lycan form and the warhammer's Howling Eclipse, which transfers the pack's strength into its Alpha. Gary uses that collective energy, his own Qi, and the dragon form's one-minute window to overpower Unzoku's regeneration. His final hammer strike nearly erases the progenitor; an outside red-space power retrieves the remnants, but the surviving Gluttons return to human form and the System recognizes Gary's victory. (Chapters 1833–1840)
The victory breaks the full-moon curse and the ancient vow, but also removes the supernatural Pack Rules. Gary responds by forbidding new turnings through leadership rather than magical compulsion and accepting an uneasy peace with the Vampire King. He questions whether this makes him another oppressor, and Xin reminds him that exposing a growing werewolf army would invite war with both humans and vampires. Gary chooses to strengthen existing members through training while keeping Lupus's survival secret, allowing his uncle to withdraw to Ruin City as a hidden ally rather than a rival Alpha. (Chapters 1840–1843)
Two years later, government action has ended the gang-controlled city system. Gary and Kai disband the Howlers as a gang and redirect its people into legitimate businesses rather than abandon the family they built. Gary marries Xin at the manor among his relatives, former fighters, and allies; when she reveals that they are expecting a daughter, his first response is to reaffirm rather than retire his protective identity. Lupus's private letter warns that future conflict may still come, but Gary defines family broadly enough to include the absent Alpha as well as Xin and their child. The frightened teenager who once risked death to pay household bills ends the supplied story with the life he had wanted—security, chosen family, and the responsibility to protect it. (Chapters 1843–1849)
Appearance and personality
Gary is introduced as a slim teenager with conspicuous dyed green hair, poor eyesight, and a favorite black-and-red tracksuit. The Werewolf System corrects his vision, accelerates his physical development, and later gives him the stature and conditioning of an elite fighter. His ordinary werewolf transformation initially has brown fur; during the first full moon, observers consistently distinguish his smaller brown form from Billy's larger black one. Later specialized forms use dark ash-colored or black fur, with the Dragon Ash Lycan adding scales, wings, and visible golden energy. He keeps the green hair into adulthood and incorporates the Howlers' black-and-gold colors into his public identity. (Chapters 1–6, 78–84, 141–167, 1189–1192, and 1847–1849)
Gary is observant in physical contests, quickly noticing opponents' habits and body patterns, but he is an awkward liar and often lets guilt show through his attempts at concealment. He is enthusiastic about Altered fighters, food, money, and visible signs of success because he grows up without those things; even after becoming wealthy, moments of luxury can bring out the excitable teenager beneath the Alpha. His humor and impulsiveness make him appear less calculating than Kai, but they also let him connect with people who would distrust a colder leader. (Chapters 1–4, 25–26, 88–90, 245–270, and 985)
Protection is Gary's most consistent motive and his greatest vulnerability. Threats to Amy, Maya, Tom, Xin, or the Howlers can push his heart rate and bloodlust into dangerous territory, and he is willing to absorb attacks that should kill him if doing so creates an opening for someone else. He also takes responsibility too broadly, blaming himself for deaths caused by Billy, regretting prisoners and Gluttons he cannot save, and repeatedly asking whether a different decision would have spared more people. Over time he learns that leadership is not the ability to prevent every loss; it is the willingness to choose, accept the cost, and keep the survivors from being consumed by the same cycle. (Chapters 44, 89–103, 176–183, 305–331, 930–931, 1353–1383, 1807, and 1843)
Powers and abilities
Gary is a werewolf transformed through the System-bearing bite whose growth is organized through a unique System interface. The System records Health, Energy, heart rate, statistics, levels, quests, classes, skills, marks, grades, pack membership, and special transformations. Later revelations show that the interface is connected to older efforts to regulate the werewolf curse, but many of its precise selection mechanisms remain unexplained. Gary's latest established class is Abyssal Warlord and his grade is King, the highest ordinary chess-based grade displayed by the System. (Chapters 4–6, 162–164, 913–924, 1125, and 1203)
Werewolf physiology, Energy, and recovery
The initial bite heals Gary's stab wound, corrects his eyesight, lowers his resting heart rate, improves stamina and senses, and gives him passive recovery. Damage can be repaired by consuming Energy; meat restores that Energy, while extreme depletion disables emergency healing and produces intense hunger. His werewolf body has enhanced smell, hearing, speed, strength, endurance, claws, teeth, and regeneration even before formal class upgrades. Chocolate acts as a poison early in his development, though later resistance and power growth make the practical extent of that weakness uncertain. (Chapters 5–6, 18–26, 42, 55–60, and 85–88)
Gary's heart rate is directly tied to early physical amplification and partial transformation. Charging Heart raises it to 150 BPM for an Energy cost; above that threshold, his physical statistics double. Protective panic can activate the same state without the skill, as when Amy is endangered. The advantage is difficult to separate from bloodlust: rage can sharpen his claws and unlock power, but it also narrows his judgment and, before he gains control, risks an involuntary shift. (Chapters 17–23, 33, 49, and 99–101)
The original full-moon curse forcefully transforms werewolves and can suppress conscious control. Gary initially survives it by exhausting his Energy and later by using bonds, preparation, and higher transformations; Unzoku's defeat ultimately removes involuntary full-moon turning from all werewolves. That victory does not remove Gary's voluntary physiology or System access, and the latest messages say that his dragon synchronization and Celestial resistance are still growing. (Chapters 71–89, 444–447, 1340–1353, and 1838–1840)
Controlled, full, and Alpha transformations
Full Transformation changes Gary into a large humanoid werewolf and consumes Energy until cancelled or until his reserve falls below the safe threshold. Controlled Transformation, selected with the Warrior class, lets him alter individual body parts and vary how much strength he draws from the shift, though it consumes Energy at twice the ordinary rate. This fine control supports disguise, mobility, claw attacks, and mixed human–werewolf fighting without revealing his complete form. (Chapters 129–141 and 163–167)
As Alpha, Gary can enter states that draw on pack and Luna bonds. Xin's Luna power unlocks his True Alpha form, but the early version places primal instinct in control while Gary remains aware of what the body does. Xin can halt or calm that berserk state, making their partnership a practical safety mechanism rather than merely a title. The Nocturne Apex is Gary's True Alpha expression, combining darkness, flame, and immense physical power; its exact full set of mechanics is not exhaustively explained by the System. (Chapters 1329–1342, 1448–1512)
Shadow Ash and Dragon Ash Lycan forms
The Shadow Ash Lycan form develops from Gary's fire talent, moon-linked transformation, and Dark Warrior path. It greatly expands his Energy and gives him a dark, ash-furred body capable of generating smoke and fire. Its form-specific techniques include Ember Dash for explosive movement, Infernal Roar for a cone of flame, Volcanic Burst for a close-range eruption, Fire Storm Howl, Smoke Veil, and Combustion Bite. The transformation was initially painful and could only be maintained for a limited period; even after practice reduces the pain, it remains more demanding than his ordinary form. (Chapters 1037, 1107–1124, and 1180–1203)
Dragon Ash Lycan combines the Shadow Ash base with dragon essence gained through Harvor. The form adds wings, scales, golden energy, flight, golden claw projections, and breath attacks powerful enough to disrupt vampire aura and overwhelm Unzoku. It consumes all available Energy when it ends, disables Gary's skills for a recovery period, lasts at most one minute, and originally had only five lifetime uses. The System later restores uses after exceptional dragon synchronization; after the final battle, two of five are available. Because of its short duration and complete post-use exhaustion, Gary treats it as a last resort whose failure would leave him defenseless. (Chapters 1137, 1189–1193, 1351–1353, and 1835–1840)
Warrior, Dark Warrior, and Abyssal Warlord progression
Gary selects Warrior at level ten because its leadership role, large Energy pool, and broad skill access match his tendency to fight at the front. The choice upgrades him from Pawn to Knight and increases his maximum Energy from 120 to 300. Later grade growth proceeds through Bishop, Rook, Queen, and King using Pawn Points and quest rewards; the same Alpha hierarchy lets him upgrade Beta grades and select their classes. (Chapters 162–164, 245–253, 307–311, 569–583, 913–915, and 1125)
Dark Warrior, his first class promotion, sacrifices defensive specialization for attack power and nocturnal endurance. At night it doubles his Energy, increases his skills by a level, and lets his offensive style continue longer; the promotion raises base Energy from 300 to 500. This path develops into Abyssal Warlord after his vampire class quest. Abyssal Empowerment triples Health and Energy at night, Shadow Regeneration heals him passively without an Energy cost, and Night Breaker can once per day cover a small daytime area in darkness so the nocturnal benefits apply there. The radius and duration of Night Breaker are not specified in the cited System description. (Chapters 552–567, 1175–1204)
Core combat skills
Claw Drain transforms Gary's fingertips into cutting claws for a short window and drains Health or vitality through successful attacks, restoring his own condition; higher levels increase its duration and potency, but it remains an Energy-consuming close-range skill. Lethal Pounce produces a sudden high-speed closing attack useful for interception and combination strikes. Claw Strike projects cutting force at range and can carry Gary's fire attribute. These skills eventually reach maximum level through the Harvor quest reward and remain available outside his specialized forms. (Chapters 53–63, 100–101, 510–567, 760, and 1020)
Last Stand is a once-daily, zero-Energy survival skill that Gary initially activates manually: for sixty seconds his Health cannot fall below one, although damage and pain continue normally. It neither increases his strength nor prevents other skills—Gary uses Full Transformation and Claw Drain while it is active against Olivia. Level two extends the duration to ninety seconds and eventually supplies unlimited Energy for the interval; at maximum level, a fatal hit can trigger it automatically, though that emergency activation immediately ends the effect and places it on cooldown. Gary uses the skill to continue fighting after injuries that would otherwise stop him and, at Tower Land, deliberately absorbs Unzoku's attacks long enough for Kai to place the medallion. Magnetic Howl compels a target's attention toward Gary; strong opponents can resist it, but the medallion weakens Unzoku just enough for a momentary opening. (Chapters 220–221, 239–240, 303–304, 553–567, 834–835, 891–892, 1020–1022, and 1830–1831)
Gary can add the phoenix-derived fire attribute to attack skills for increased Energy cost. In Shadow Ash form this talent develops into the named flame and smoke techniques above; outside it, he can ignite Claw Strike and other attacks. Heat and fire resistance rise through consuming Sin, while eating Harvor grants increased endurance and resistance to Celestial Energy. The System demonstrates that consumption can transfer talents from sufficiently powerful beings, but it does not establish that every consumed target grants a predictable ability. (Chapters 920–924, 1010–1037, 1107–1124, and 1137)
Alpha bonds, pack powers, and turning
Bond Marks arise from sincere promises and give marked people a unique trackable scent; active marks later grant Gary daily experience. Forced Bonds instead designate targets produced by concentrated bloodlust. These mechanics help him locate people he feels responsible for, but they also show the System translating emotion into supernatural pursuit. The exact maximum number and all later mark upgrades vary with class and are not consistently restated. (Chapters 13, 26–27, 38–44, and 89–93)
Alpha Bite attempts to turn a human into a werewolf. Its success chance and the new wolf's grade improve with Gary's grade, but failure can be fatal; at King grade, the System states a 99.9 percent success rate rather than a guarantee. Alpha authority originally lets Gary define Pack Rules, prevent unauthorized violence or turnings, and issue binding orders. Defeating Unzoku ends those supernatural rules, so Gary's latest prohibition on new werewolves depends on consent, loyalty, and leadership rather than magical enforcement. (Chapters 183, 241–246, 306–311, 345–356, 1125, and 1840–1843)
Howling Force grants nearby pack members a ten-percent overall statistic increase for fifteen minutes, with a one-hour reset. Pack Ruler passively awards Gary ten percent of the experience earned by Beta hunts and allows shared rewards when a Beta kills his marked target. At King grade, nearby pack members can also contribute a cumulative strength bonus. These powers make proximity and coordination central to Gary's best battles; they do not make pack members expendable resources, and Gary often withholds their strongest collective effects when doing so would leave others helpless. (Chapters 245–246, 349, 553–558, and 1133–1134)
The warhammer's Howling Eclipse is equipment-derived rather than innate. It drains the Energy and power of nearby pack members into the Alpha and weapon for a temporary, once-per-month amplification. Gary combines it with Dragon Ash Lycan and his own Qi against Unzoku, but only after ordering the pack away because the drain leaves them exhausted. The final attack works because the whole pack's accumulated strength supplements a transformation that otherwise lasts just one minute. (Chapters 1142–1147, 1480, and 1835–1838)
Qi, combat sense, and leadership
Before transforming, Gary is already skilled at reading movement patterns from years of watching Altered fights. Rugby, gang battles, AFA instruction, and professional competition turn that observation into practical striking, grappling, evasion, and team coordination. He is not the most technically polished fighter in every comparison, but he learns opponents' habits quickly and is unusually willing to adjust mid-fight or serve as bait for a better strategist's plan. (Chapters 1–2, 16–23, 360–417, 615–673, and 1829–1831)
Innu teaches Gary that the Energy displayed by his System and Qi are the same underlying force. Gary initially struggles because the interface has conditioned him to activate fixed outputs and automatic transformations. By resisting those prompts, he learns to circulate Qi without changing shape, reinforce strikes, use elemental power more deliberately, and draw abilities from beast equipment. The skill remains effort-dependent rather than a new System button, and his latest uses combine personal Qi with class, transformation, and pack-derived energy. (Chapters 1357–1367, 1595–1608, 1693–1707, and 1810–1838)
Gary's most consequential ability is organizational rather than supernatural. He inspires stronger or more experienced people to accept shared responsibility, delegates planning to Kai, gives defeated enemies a path into the pack, and repeatedly expands the meaning of those he must protect. His impulsiveness can force allies into avoidable danger, but by the final war he can order a retreat, trust Kai to execute a separate plan, coordinate with vampires and former enemies, and accept that victory belongs to the entire group rather than the Alpha alone. (Chapters 36–71, 222–311, 552–583, 808–931, 1334–1383, and 1807–1843)

Relationships
- Kai: Gary's strategist, closest co-leader, and eventual fellow Alpha. Kai creates the Howlers and repeatedly supplies plans Gary could not devise alone; Gary, in turn, gives Kai the trust and moral center that keep strategy from becoming pure expediency. Their refusal to let Alpha law destroy their friendship is central to defeating Unzoku. (Chapters 36–71, 331–356, 1376–1383, and 1829–1838)
- Xin Clove: Gary's partner, Luna, and wife. Xin gives up her Altered path to join his pack, can restrain his True Alpha state, and grounds his self-doubt as a leader. They end the supplied story expecting a daughter. (Chapters 1329–1355 and 1843–1849)
- Amy Dem: Gary's younger sister and one of the first people he risks the underworld to support. Threats to Amy trigger some of his most violent transformations, while her later independence and pride show that his protection did not prevent her from building a life of her own. (Chapters 3–6, 93–103, 247, 931, and 1848)
- Maya: Gary's mother. His early gang work is partly an attempt to relieve her financial burden, and their reunion after the Phoenix attack confirms how much responsibility he assumed in her absence. (Chapters 3–6 and 930–937)
- Tom: Gary's oldest friend, first human confidant, and principal System researcher. Tom helps him survive the first full moon, recommends the Warrior class, studies his transformations, and provides the practical support behind many later pack decisions. (Chapters 1, 25–26, 71–93, 163, and 936)
- Lupus: Gary's uncle, rival Alpha, and eventual ally. Their relationship develops from pack war and inherited mistrust into a family bond after the other-world trial; Lupus's exile at the end protects Gary's peace while preserving a promise of mutual aid. (Chapters 938–959, 1157–1333, 1524–1739, and 1841–1849)
- Blake: An early school rival and Altered Hunter who initially sees Gary's werewolf nature as a target. Shared fights, revelations about both their families, and the war against the old pack turn the rivalry into a lasting friendship. (Chapters 2, 34, 135–183, 1430–1498, and 1848)
- Jayden Tiger: Xin's brother and one of Gary's earliest Altered idols. Jayden shelters Gary after his first full moon and helps set him on the AFA path; his later death remains one of the losses Gary carries into his marriage to Xin. (Chapters 35, 87–88, 254–263, 962–1031, and 1847–1849)
Items
- Howlers Wolf Masks: Gary uses the Howlers' shared wolf imagery and masks to separate the gang's public identity from his school and AFC lives before his identity becomes widely known.
