Mr Root

Mr Root is Westbridge High School's physical-education teacher and rugby coach. His loud, mocking coaching style hides close attention to his students, especially Gary Dem, whose tactical awareness he recognizes before Gary becomes publicly prominent.

Biography

Coaching Westbridge's rugby team

Mr Root begins with little expectation that the unathletic Gary can stop Blake, but school rules make him give every student a chance. When Gary's new physical power finally lets his observations translate into a successful tackle, Root immediately promotes him from the bench and names him for the match against Eton High. He warns the team that Eton's gang connections make the fixture dangerous, adapts positions and kickers as the match changes, and praises Gary's contribution rather than reserving attention for established stars. His rough nicknames and shouting are abrasive, but his decisions give Gary one of his first legitimate places to demonstrate his developing abilities. (Chapters 2–92)

Protecting the students

When the red colour gang takes Westbridge hostage and threatens to maim a student, Mr Root falsely claims responsibility for the students' resistance. He submits to a prolonged beating because fighting back could redirect the gang toward the children. Even while critically injured, he tells Gary to stay away and protect his sporting future, then tries to explain that he had always seen Gary's talent. Gary and the other Howlers intervene, and Root is taken to hospital with a failing heart rate; his sacrifice becomes the reason Gary confronts the gang leader but also refuses to turn Root into a werewolf without consent. Later reports say Root's condition stabilizes and that he is recovering, although rugby practice remains cancelled and the corpus gives no later return to teaching. (Chapters 200–212, 241–254)

Appearance and personality

Mr Root is an exceptionally tall, broad, and sturdy man who towers over students and other adults. He commonly wears a red tracksuit, and Gary compares his build to a giant tree. (Chapters 2, 200)

He is loud, blunt, and fond of insulting nicknames such as “broccoli head,” but he is neither inattentive nor cowardly. Root watches how players read movement, gives unlikely students a fair opportunity, and places his own body between gang members and children when institutional authority fails.

Powers and abilities

Mr Root has no demonstrated supernatural powers, Altered transformation, Qi, or combat system.

Rugby coaching and observation

Root understands tackling, defensive structure, player selection, match positioning, and the psychological pressure surrounding Slough school sport. He identifies Gary's ability to analyze opponents and recognizes that this trait matters even before Gary's body catches up. His coaching is practical rather than formally explained, and the corpus does not establish professional play credentials beyond his school role. (Chapters 2–92, 202)

Human strength and endurance

Root's size suggests substantial ordinary strength, and onlookers believe he might overpower several gang members if he resisted. He instead remains still to protect the students and survives a beating that leaves him critically injured. This is human endurance, not evidence of an Altered body; he requires an ambulance and extended hospital recovery. (Chapters 200–203, 241–254)

Relationships

Gary Dem

Root is among the first adults to reward Gary's underlying talent. Gary initially treats his shouting as an annoyance, but Root's sacrifice reveals how much he values the coach and leads him to retaliate against the red gang while stopping short of imposing werewolf life on him.

Blake and the rugby team

Blake is Root's established star, but Root uses him as a standard that other students must learn to tackle rather than allowing the team to depend on one athlete. During the hostage crisis, Root treats every student as his responsibility, including those who are too frightened to defend him.

Items

Mr Root uses ordinary rugby balls, whistles, and school sports equipment. He has no finalized notable personal item in the supplied inventory.
