Matthew

Matthew Pearl is an AJ Entertainment director, co-founder of the Ashen Gang, and the gang's strongest Altered. As Ash shifts toward running the legitimate company, Matthew uses the resulting control over gang operations and performers to build a rival power base. His attempted sexual coercion of four young stars brings Gary Dem into the conflict and ends with Matthew defeated and stripped of influence.

Biography

Control of AJ Entertainment and its performers

Matthew helped Ash create the Ashen Gang and remains the director's violent counterpart after AJ Entertainment becomes their public business. With Ash focused on company management, Matthew handles more gang affairs, draws members away from his former partner, and considers taking full control. Employees know him as the strongest Altered in the gang, while producer Neville follows him because he fears Matthew more than Ash. Matthew treats recruited performers as products and dismisses the Howlers' minority stake even though it is part of Ash's attempt to restrain him. (Chapters 450, 626–627)

Matthew summons Spring, Rachel, Clem, and Tyson to a private room, isolates them, and conditions future projects on the women having sex with him. Tyson attacks to protect them, but Matthew beats him without needing to transform and continues the coercion while Neville blocks escape and prepares a camera. When Gary arrives, Matthew refuses Ash's threat of White Rose prosecution, invokes their shared gang history, and openly declares that he will remove Ash and force control of the company from both men. (Chapters 631–635)

Matthew transforms and charges Gary, expecting the pure strength of his rhinoceros-like form to settle the confrontation. Gary breaks both hands, bends his nasal horn, and repeatedly beats him before mutilating him so that he cannot repeat the assault; Matthew loses consciousness from the injury. Afterward neither Matthew nor Neville can be contacted, while the public story credits Ash with stopping them. Their disappearance silences Matthew's supporters and lets Ash begin removing the faction from AJ Entertainment. The corpus does not show whether Matthew is hospitalized, imprisoned, or otherwise confined after Gary leaves him in Ash's custody. (Chapters 635–637)

Appearance and personality

Matthew is a hairy, rugged man with a strong jaw, pointed beard, and curly hair reaching his shoulders. He wears a V-neck shirt that exposes his chest hair and gives Gary the initial impression of someone more visibly wolf-like than the actual werewolf. Transformation enlarges his upper body, rounds his shoulders, turns his skin grey and rough, and develops his nose into a horn, producing a rhinoceros-like appearance. (Chapters 626, 635–636)

He is predatory, entitled, and proud of rule through fear. Matthew reduces performers to usable commodities, interprets Ash's move toward legitimate responsibility as weakness, and assumes gang strength exempts him from consequences. He can intimidate subordinates effectively, but panic and pain degrade his fighting once Gary proves stronger than his reputation prepared him to face.

Powers and abilities

Rhinoceros-like Altered form

Matthew is identified as the strongest Altered in the Ashen Gang, though the corpus does not name his source beast, solution provider, or acquisition date. He can partially transform by enlarging his torso, roughening and greying his skin, and forming a nasal horn, then increase those features for combat. The form emphasizes raw strength, mass, forward speed, and impact: he lowers his head and drives from his legs while swinging a heavy overhand blow. (Chapters 626, 635–636)

The transformation does not provide sufficient defense against a much stronger opponent. Gary meets Matthew's power-focused punch directly and breaks the hand, outspeeds his follow-up, and physically bends the horn. Damage and fear make Matthew fight less effectively, and the form shows no regeneration capable of repairing the injuries before he loses consciousness. No separate ranged attack, special sense, activation cost, or duration is established. (Chapter 636)

Gang combat and intimidation

Matthew built his position in the Ashen Gang through violence and can overpower Tyson in human form, showing substantial base strength and fighting experience. His control of guards, Neville, and an internal gang faction lets him isolate victims without initially using biological power. These methods depend on fear and secrecy; Ash's rejection of him and Gary's intervention collapse both advantages at once. (Chapters 626–635)

Relationships

Ash

Matthew and Ash build the Ashen Gang together, then diverge as Ash invests in AJ Entertainment and Matthew continues the gang's violent work. Matthew resents being left with that role while Ash gains legitimacy, recruits support for a takeover, and treats Ash's concern for employees as betrayal. His defeat restores Ash's authority but leaves Ash confronting his own responsibility for ignoring what Matthew became.

Gary Dem

Matthew initially dismisses Gary as a young performer and later as a businessman unable to command a gang. Learning that Gary leads the Howlers does not change his confidence quickly enough. Gary's intervention exposes that Matthew's institutional power and Altered strength cannot protect him from consequences imposed outside the hierarchy he controls.

Spring, Rachel, Clem, and Tyson

Matthew treats the four recruits as products whose ambitions he can exploit. Tyson's resistance makes him the immediate physical target, while the women are threatened through Matthew's control over careers and the locked room. Their rescue and testimony become the moral and political basis for removing Matthew's faction from the company.

Items

Matthew has no finalized notable personal item in the supplied inventory. His authority rests on his corporate position, gang followers, and Altered body rather than a signature piece of equipment.
