Ian

Ian Noblitt is an Altered fighter, a school friend of Izzy, and a recurring ally of Numba and the Howlers. He enters the Altered Fighting Academy unable to transform on command despite conspicuous physical potential, then develops a bristle-based form suited to both area defense and ranged support. Although he leaves professional fighting once the AFC has brought his family enough recognition, he continues training and repeatedly returns when the Howlers' survival also threatens the families and businesses tied to them.

Biography

From a broken-leg assessment to an academy alliance

Ian comes to the AFA assessment from Pompano with Izzy and Tick. His family operates an IT service company and has invested heavily in making him an Altered, hoping that his success will raise the company's influence. Ian cannot yet transform reliably, but his ordinary strength is enough to distinguish him from most applicants. During the ball assessment, he tries to protect his school friends and attacks Numba; Gary Dem intervenes and accidentally breaks Ian's leg. The injury does not erase the potential shown in his earlier fight, and the professors admit him as Ian Noblitt alongside Gary, Numba, and Izzy. (Chapters 365–370)

The four begin as wary competitors, but academy pressure turns them into a durable team. When Scatterbugs-linked students injure Izzy and target Numba, Ian supports his friends rather than treating the violence as an individual dispute. He later leaves the AFA with Izzy when Numba's family comes under direct attack: once Numba decides that defending Notsburg matters more than remaining at school, Ian immediately invokes their alliance and goes with him. In Notsburg he shields Numba from Midwak by presenting a back covered in hardened bristles, then fires those bristles into the werewolf. The attack hurts Midwak but cannot stop his healing, while the force of Midwak's blows still carries through the defensive layer. The encounter establishes both Ian's loyalty and the limits of relying on physical armor against a stronger supernatural opponent. Ian returns to the academy after the crisis and progresses into the AFC beside Izzy and Numba. A few professional matches give their families the publicity and leverage they sought, after which all three leave the league to help their respective businesses. Ian does not mistake leaving the ring for becoming harmless: the trio keeps training together, preserving the coordination that began at school. (Chapters 517–533, 648–668, and 850–851)

Choosing Slough over personal safety

When the Phoenix Gang turns its campaign toward Slough, Ian's family recognizes that the Howlers' defeat would also endanger the businesses allied with them. He therefore joins Izzy and Numba at Burnham Food Street rather than staying behind to protect only his family's immediate property. Ian treats the invasion as a lethal war, not an AFC match: after a flame-resistant Altered kills a Howler, Ian launches a spike into the attacker, closes with two more bristles held as stabbing weapons, and kills him. His explicit refusal to hesitate marks a harder combat outlook than the competitive student who entered the AFA. (Chapters 850–852)

Ian later fights the Hydra-form Raven alongside Numba, Izzy, Marie, and Olivia. Their team can create openings and survive ordinary Phoenix fighters, but Raven's corrosive body and regeneration make sustained contact dangerous. When Olivia and Marie collapse during an evolution and the battle becomes unwinnable, Ian withdraws with the group rather than spending their lives on a symbolic stand. He survives the war and remains part of the network that rebuilds around Slough. (Chapters 853–879 and 921–930)

Fighting werewolves and returning for the final crisis

During Lupus's full-moon attack, Ian, Izzy, and Numba face the Ironfang Slit while the Howlers' werewolves cannot transform. Ian uses his body as a hazardous barrier, firing bristles toward mouths and exposed flesh, pulling individual spikes free as short weapons, and releasing volleys around himself when surrounded. He can even catch Slit's dagger on a bristle, but Slit's speed and specialized weapons let him evade the barrage and kick Ian away. Gary eventually orders the trio to reinforce the wider line instead of fixating on an elite they cannot finish; they obey, help other defenders, and survive the night badly injured and exhausted. Ian helps with the wounded after the battle and later answers the Howlers' call when Glutton Werewolves spread through Slough. He arrives with Numba, Izzy, and other allied Altereds, contributing to the reinforcements that stabilize the city before the creatures converge elsewhere. He is alive at the end of the corpus and attends Gary and Xin Clove's wedding, preserving the friendship formed when four academy applicants chose cooperation over their original rivalries. Appearance and personality

Ian is introduced as a short, brown-haired teenager. His transformed body grows numerous sharp bristles, described in different scenes as golden or dark brown, across his back, arms, and other exposed areas. His physical presentation changes less than the scale and control of those bristles as his training advances. (Chapters 365, 413, and 533)

He is blunt, sociable, and often willing to make a joke in tense company, but his casual manner does not imply indecision. Ian follows Numba out of the AFA without bargaining over the personal cost, accepts lethal force when Slough's defenders are being killed, and continues fighting after leaving the AFC. His loyalty is practical rather than ceremonial: he shields teammates, follows retreat orders when a battle cannot be won, and returns when their shared alliance is threatened. Powers and abilities

Bristle-generating Altered form

Ian is a manufactured Altered, though the corpus does not identify the serum's source species or acquisition circumstances beyond his family's investment. Transformation allows him to grow and harden bristles from his skin, especially across his back and arms. Direct contact can puncture an attacker, making his back an effective shield for another person. He can detach or launch the bristles singly and in volleys, aim at vulnerable openings such as the mouth, pull them free to use as short stabbing weapons, and release an outward barrage to cover multiple angles. His later battlefield use is broader and more controlled than his early academy activation, demonstrating progression from a single defensive surprise into ranged and close-combat variants. The bristles are hard enough to pierce Altereds, wound a werewolf, and intercept a dagger, but they are not absolute armor. Midwak strikes through the layer with enough blunt force to injure Ian, and his healing quickly negates the punctures. Faster opponents can evade a volley or attack around its timing, while large releases consume substantial energy. Ian is visibly taxed after sustained barrages, so his strongest area defense cannot be maintained indefinitely. The corpus does not show a separate evolved form or explain whether lost bristles must regrow before another launch. (Chapters 413, 533, and 1400–1430)

Altered physicality and formal combat training

Even before he can transform on command, Ian has enhanced strength, speed, durability, and recovery sufficient to attract AFA selection despite a compound leg injury. AFA and AFC training refine those traits into agile kicks, rapid positioning, and disciplined team fighting. He learns to combine Izzy's restraints and throws with his own projectiles and Numba's charges rather than treating every encounter as a solo exchange. (Chapters 365–413, 533–564, and 648–668)

That training does not close every power gap. Elite mythical Altereds, experienced Ironfangs, and werewolves with superior healing can survive or evade his best applications. Ian's latest demonstrated value is therefore flexible support—screening allies, finishing exposed enemies, and saturating an approach—rather than the ability to defeat the setting's strongest combatants alone. Relationships

• Izzy: Ian's school friend, academy teammate, and continuing combat partner. Their shared move from the AFA to the AFC and then into family business never dissolves the team; her restraint and transport abilities repeatedly create targets for his bristles.
