Lupus

Lupus is a natural-born Alpha werewolf, the elder brother of Dean, and the longtime ruler of Ruin City. He builds an impoverished and hidden werewolf settlement into the territory of a national King, but his conviction that the pack must survive at any cost repeatedly places him against his brother, the vampires, and eventually his nephew Gary Dem. Their apparent war is later exposed as the work of Unzoku, whose control turns Lupus's protective instincts against the people he means to preserve. Forced to share an other-world trial with Gary and Kai, Lupus learns that rival Alphas can choose cooperation, returns as their ally, and helps end the old cycle through combat, lost werewolf craft, and his voluntary exile.

Biography

Building a home and losing a brother

Lupus and Dean are born into the old Ruin City pack, two years apart, and raised under their father's severe rules for surviving the full moon. Lupus treats being a werewolf as a gift rather than a curse. As a young man he deliberately tests the freedom he wants by leaving himself unrestrained and insufficiently fed on a full moon, killing visitors when the transformation takes control. The deaths do not end his belief that their kind should live openly, but they establish the central contradiction in his leadership: he wants liberation for werewolves while accepting risks that Dean believes ordinary people will pay. Lupus later challenges and defeats their aging father for the Alpha position, although he continues to respect the former Alpha's advice after taking command. (Chapters 937–941)

Ruin City is then little more than an isolated tourist ruin whose pack survives by selling trinkets. Lupus answers its poverty through labor, organization, and force. He directs construction, expands the settlement, defeats neighboring gangs, and allows businesses and migrants into a city deliberately built around forests, cycle paths, and the old cliffside castle. The pack prospers with it, and Lupus becomes both gang King and practical sovereign: there is no ordinary police presence, his organization collects unusually high fees, and his law governs the territory. By the time he is directly seen in his throne room, other Kings avoid provoking the Alpha even as the Howlers first hear his name and anticipate a clash. (Chapters 770 and 927–940)

Success does not solve the succession problem. Dean unexpectedly becomes a second Alpha, and Lupus begins reading his brother's habitual advice as a challenge to his fitness to lead. When Lupus proposes loosening restrictions and expanding beyond Ruin City, Dean warns that dispersed wolves will kill on the full moon; their disagreement becomes a physical clash after Lupus strikes first. Dean refuses to carry the rivalry to its expected conclusion and leaves the pack, eventually having NIRV remove his werewolf nature. Years later Lupus welcomes him back as a brother, offers help to Dean's family, and is genuinely happy to learn that he has one, but excludes the now-human Dean from the castle because Lupus defines the pack itself as family. Learning that NIRV removed Dean's wolf prompts Lupus to raid the company, seeking the separated fur and the knowledge needed to prevent outsiders from making another Alpha. That intervention helps set the chain of events by which the fur reaches Gary instead. (Chapters 941–959)

Hunters, vampires, and the nephew Alpha

The Altered Hunters' assault interrupts Lupus's first contemplated move against Slough and turns Ruin City into a prolonged battlefield. Lupus initially stays away from lesser engagements while his Ironfang and other pack members defend the city, but this is calculation rather than indifference: the hunters want the Alpha himself, and exposing him would make the whole pack vulnerable. When he enters the fighting, he tears the horns from Austin's transformed body and nearly overwhelms the hunters, while insisting that he is defending his home rather than hunting for sport. He tells Austin that he does not enjoy killing those he considers his own kind or family, and explains that the vampires could exploit a war between Alphas to destroy all of them. (Chapters 927–934 and 1157–1303)

That fear becomes immediate when the vampire Edvard intervenes. Lupus catches and redirects Edvard's Blood Cannon, sends cutting energy through distant structures, and survives attacks intended to erase him, confirming why the vampires treat him as a strategic threat. He nevertheless sees their participation as proof that Gary has chosen the wrong side. In his first direct battle with his nephew, Lupus matches Gary's energy claws, speed, and regeneration, then reveals that he had not known the other Alpha was Dean's son until after the conflict with Sin. His attempt to recover Dean's fur was meant to stop an uncontrolled new Alpha, not to create Gary or arrange Midwak's death. He asks Gary not to repeat the family cycle even as their Alpha instincts keep the fight alive. (Chapters 1303–1315)

Ylva, Lupus's Luna, unlocks their synchronized apex states when Edvard's attack drives the confrontation higher. In the Bloodfang Apex form Lupus dominates Edvard and Gary's Shadow Ash form until Gary answers with his brief Dragon Ash transformation. Gary wounds him but uses the remaining time to evacuate his people instead of killing him. While Ylva helps the exhausted Lupus revert, he rejects her proposal to attack Slough on the next full moon because doing so would complete the vampires' design. He spends the pack's money on treating Ruin City's wounded, orders rebuilding, expresses reluctant admiration for Gary, and seeks a meeting with Dean. Lupus then tells his brother that he regards Gary as family and will not enter a fight staged by their enemies, asking only for a meeting after the moon as evidence of good faith. (Chapters 1316–1323 and 1333–1344)

A forced army and the fall of the old pack

Peace is undercut by an older obligation. Lupus had made a vow with Unzoku to free newly made wolves from compulsory full-moon transformation, promising in exchange to grow the pack each year by at least one hundred members or twenty percent. The bargain advances Lupus's dream of freedom but hollows out the community it was supposed to protect. He can no longer know every member, factions evade his rules, and his Alpha influence weakens across the expanded organization. When Lupus admits the arrangement is unsustainable, Unzoku restricts his movement, places a corrupting force into him, and leaves him distant and altered. Lupus's subsequent decision to mobilize against the Howlers is therefore not the reversal of his reconciliation it appears to be; Marcus, Galdark, and later Lupus himself all identify a break between his stated plans and the attack. (Chapters 1384–1390 and 1527–1529)

Under that influence, Lupus personally cuts through the Howlers' coalition. He defeats Ice after Ice and Apollo briefly restrain him, then consumes the Mythical Yeti Altered because he judges the creature powerful enough to produce a worthwhile and lasting change. The act gives him ice generation, decoys, improved recovery, and freezing claw damage, but also demonstrates the risk of werewolf absorption: Lupus explains that sufficiently strong prey can unpredictably alter the eater, and that adapting to one major beast can reduce a second consumption to a temporary increase. He proceeds to fight Kai's newly created Alpha form and the surrounding pack for hours, using ice and stamina to counter Kai's superior movement. (Chapters 1432–1450 and 1470–1488)

Ylva's full-moon support returns Lupus to Bloodfang Apex, but her death leaves him without the Luna who could call the maddened form down. Lupus kills Don Tinge's Leviathan after an extended battle and consumes him, adding greater elemental output and physical strength to the Yeti foundation. He then tears through Marie's Luna barrier and remains the strongest combatant when Gary and Kai enter their own apex states. The contest is no longer an organized war: the three Alphas attack one another through instinct, and their combined collision activates the medallion that removes all three from the battlefield. With Lupus and Ylva gone, the surviving old pack loses command, surrenders, and is absorbed into the Howlers rather than exterminated. Lupus's attempt to secure the species has instead destroyed the independent pack he spent his life building. (Chapters 1488–1516)

The other-world trial

Lupus arrives in an unfamiliar world alongside Gary and Kai with his apex state gone and his power suppressed to that of an Omega. A shared quest interface warns them that death there will be real. Before asking for trust, Lupus apologizes and explains that Unzoku took control of him; he accepts that Gary may not believe him but refuses to pretend he wanted either pack destroyed. Gary and Kai can still match or kill him only at enormous mutual cost, so they hear him out and let him travel with them. Their first cooperation is practical, but the trial strips away the armies and inherited roles that had kept the Alphas apart: each has family at risk, none can complete the quests alone, and Lupus repeatedly proves that his strength is being used for the group rather than against it. (Chapters 1524–1529 and 1541–1550)

The group joins Steve's roaming werewolf pack, where Lupus's raw strength wins respect even under suppression. Steve's history with his brother Jack confronts Lupus with another pair of Dem Alphas and, more importantly, with evidence that two Alphas do not inevitably have to kill one another. As the three outsiders learn the older history, Lupus connects Unzoku's curses and selective control to the divisions in his own era. Living and fighting beside Steve's wolves also restores the smaller form of pack life Lupus lost: he participates in missions, saves members, and sees loyalty earned through shared danger instead of annual quotas. After entering Jack's kingdom, Lupus is initially a powerful but technically crude fighter. He chooses a sword and shield without knowing formal technique and discovers that trained humans can block or accelerate with Qi even when they lack his physiology. He commits himself to learning that energy control, weapon use, and the werewolves' forgotten craft. His judgment develops beside the technique. When Lilly is accused after a manipulated killing, Lupus refuses to let Steve's wolves take her and risks altering the apparent past to save a person he believes innocent. The choice earns Jack's respect and shows Lupus acting on responsibility beyond species or pack membership. (Chapters 1592–1660)

Lupus later chooses Steve's side in the formal duels meant to prevent war between the brothers, yet fights his match honestly rather than accepting a convenient result. His refined Qi lets him resist and clash with Bluebird longer than expected, although the knight ultimately defeats him. When the full-moon curse drives both ancient packs feral, Lupus, Gary, and Kai restrain their new companions instead of killing them, confirming in action that the curse and Unzoku—not coexistence itself—created much of their historical bloodshed. Jack eventually sends the three home with their accumulated growth intact and singles Lupus out as an exceptional forger. Lupus returns committed to ending Unzoku and to working with the other Alphas rather than rebuilding the rivalry. (Chapters 1662–1716)

Return, reconciliation, and the forge

Two months have passed in their own world. Lupus accepts that the remnants of his pack joined the Howlers, telling Gary that they are now one family rather than demanding the old hierarchy back. Gary in turn promises to defend Lupus and his people against the vampires. Lupus confirms the settlement to his former followers, leaves Luzen and Slit with the Howlers where their strength is most useful, and returns with Galdark to ruined Ruin City. His purpose is not territorial recovery alone: recalling the lost craft he learned in the trial, he builds a hidden forge, studies beast crystals, and prepares transformation-compatible armor for himself, Gary, and Kai. (Chapters 1735–1740, 1762, and 1773–1775)

Unzoku attacks before that preparation is complete. Lupus meets him alone in black-and-gold armor with a massive active-skill shield and discovers that Unzoku can no longer control him. The corpus does not give a definitive mechanism, although both Lupus and Unzoku associate the resistance with the other-world change and with the dragon-like forms later shown by Lupus and Gary. Qi, Yeti ice, and the shield's Anchor, attraction, and stored-force functions let Lupus dictate the early exchanges, but all are finite: Unzoku's strength eventually transmits damage through the defense, drains Lupus's Qi, and cracks the shield. Lupus keeps fighting because the hidden survivors and the future of their species are behind him, a direct answer to Unzoku's belief that attachment is weakness. (Chapters 1774–1775 and 1810–1814)

Galdark leaves safety in an attempt to distract Unzoku and is killed in front of the Alpha he served since Lupus's father ruled. Grief and the absorbed Leviathan power trigger a new scaled, sea-dragon transformation. Lupus remains mentally lucid, freezes Unzoku internally, and forces him to flee, but the form burns out so completely that Lupus reverts to human and cannot produce even a partial transformation. He nevertheless carries Galdark's body underground, sends the Howlers Unzoku's direction, and immediately resumes forging. After delivering Gary and Kai their adaptive armor and Kai's weapons, he is too depleted to fight in the final engagement but accompanies the force and watches Gary destroy Unzoku. The equipment and the damage Lupus inflicted are his final contribution to the victory, while Galdark's death leaves him responsible for preserving the Bookkeeper line. (Chapters 1815–1838)

Exile and the last warning

With Unzoku gone, Lupus chooses not to recreate the old pack. He withdraws to Ruin City with Slit and Luzen and promises that he will answer Gary whenever needed, but otherwise stays hidden so the vampires have no old enemy around whom to justify a purge. The decision costs him the open freedom he spent his life pursuing, yet gives the united Howlers a chance to live it. The corpus does not show whether his transformations fully recover after the Leviathan burnout; by this point his strategic value as an ally and keeper of old knowledge matters as much as his former position as the strongest werewolf. (Chapters 1841–1843)

Two years later, Lupus has kept his distance. Learning that Gary and Xin are expecting a child, he sends a letter through Slit explaining a secret normally passed from Alpha to Alpha: an Alpha's pregnant Luna progressively loses her supernatural power and will be nearly powerless near birth. He also promises to send the next Bookkeeper to the Howlers. Seated on a rebuilt throne within Ruin City's remains, Lupus repeats that he will help Gary without condition, while hoping never to see him at the doors because such a reunion would mean another war had begun. His final position is therefore neither rival King nor subordinate pack member, but a concealed guardian of the family and history he once tried to protect through control. (Chapter 1849)

Appearance and personality

Lupus is an exceptionally large, broad, and muscular older man. At his direct introduction he sits bare-chested in Ruin City's castle, wearing loose grey martial-arts clothing; his thick neck, boulder-like shoulders, cold eyes, and three-inch white beard make his authority visible before he transforms. His standard werewolf form is correspondingly massive. The Predaclaw Ascendant state adds coarse, mane-like fur along his back and white energy at the fingertips, while Bloodfang Apex covers him in light-absorbing black fur marked by red veins around the eyes and long obsidian claws. The later Leviathan state adds dark scales, heavier sea-predator claws and teeth, a thick bladed tail, freezing mist, and red-and-blue eyes. (Chapters 927, 1314–1320, and 1815–1817)

He is proud, blunt, combative, and intensely resistant to being cornered or treated as weak. Lupus enjoys tests of strength and usually prefers his hands to formal weapons, yet he is not a thoughtless killer: he avoids killing his own kind where he can, refuses plans that would serve the vampires, and devotes money and labor to civilians injured in his territory. His worst choices grow out of paternal certainty. He assumes that only a strong Alpha inside his own pack can secure werewolf survival, allows forced growth to dilute the relationships that gave the pack meaning, and initially interprets Dean's disagreement as disloyalty. The other-world trial does not erase that severity, but redirects it. Lupus saves Lilly despite the risk to the quest, accepts former enemies as family, learns patiently from humans whose Qi and craft exceed his own, and turns immediately from devastating exhaustion to forging tools for others. He remains capable of arrogance and violence, but his later leadership is defined by chosen restraint: he gives up his independent pack, assists the Alphas who replaced him, and removes himself from public life to protect them from a wider war. Powers and abilities

Lupus is a natural-born Alpha whose power combines inherited werewolf physiology, decades of combat and command, absorption from powerful Altereds, Luna-enabled apex transformation, and later Qi and forging knowledge. He does not possess Gary's Werewolf System in the ordinary world. The quest interface temporarily shared in the other-world trial is separate, so precise numerical grades, durations, and energy costs for most of Lupus's biological abilities are unknown.

Werewolf physiology and combat

Lupus is born a werewolf and can partially transform individual limbs or assume a full upright wolf form. Transformation increases his already exceptional strength, speed, agility, senses, durability, and regeneration. He can hear heartbeats, track scent, heal punctures during a battle, change direction fast enough to catch much smaller fighters, and use claws that cut reinforced bodies and energy attacks. Even while the other-world trial suppresses all three visitors to Omega status, he remains stronger and more technically composed than Gary or Kai in their opening clash and defeats six of Steve's powerful pack members in tests of strength. His fighting style is built around explosive pounces, changing angles, grappling, and overwhelming counters rather than formal weapon forms. Phantom Pounce can leave an energy or, after the Yeti absorption, ice decoy where a strike appears to land, letting Lupus reappear from another angle. His claws project large cutting waves and tornado-like barrages; his Predaclaw Ascendant fingertips emit white energy capable of meeting Gary's fire claws or cutting through distant structures. The corpus never supplies formal activation phrases or a fixed range. Repeated fights show that elite barriers, armor, Qi, elemental suppression, or an opponent of Alpha-level durability can block or survive these attacks, and prolonged battles can exhaust even Lupus's healing and physical reserves. Werewolves gain energy and traits by consuming suitable bodies and beast material. Lupus is selective because weak prey offers little while a sufficiently strong beast can alter the eater in unpredictable ways. After he adapts to one major creature, another comparable meal may give only temporary raw strength rather than a second stable trait. This makes absorption a path of progression, not a freely interchangeable arsenal, and the exact compatibility rules remain unknown. His representative acquisitions are the Mythical Yeti inside Ice and Don Tinge's Leviathan. (Chapters 1442–1443, 1504–1507, and 1812–1816)

Alpha authority and pack bonds

Lupus becomes Alpha by defeating his father and thereafter bears red Alpha eyes, an instinctive pressure perceptible to other werewolves, and authority over his pack's rules. An Alpha can create new wolves, define behavioral restrictions, sense a rival Alpha entering the territory, reinforce pack members, and command enough instinctive loyalty that Lupus's disappearance stops an army mid-battle. Leadership is not absolute mind control: members can form factions or evade rules when the pack becomes too large, and a second Alpha produces mutual aggression that Lupus must consciously suppress. Formal succession also makes the Alpha a target whose defeat can collapse the pack's organization. (Chapters 938–945, 1223–1227, 1385, and 1513–1516)

Lupus's arrangement with Unzoku suppresses compulsory full-moon transformation for new wolves, but only while Lupus fulfils the annual-growth vow. It is an external bargain rather than a natural Alpha technique, and its price accelerates the dilution of his authority. Unzoku can also restrict and mentally influence Lupus after their direct encounter, overriding intent without erasing Lupus's later memory of being controlled. The other-world trial breaks that influence; in the rematch, Unzoku's mist fails to take hold. The narrative suggests a connection to the medallion, the trial, or Lupus's dragon-like potential, but never isolates which mechanism grants resistance. Ylva is Lupus's Luna and can synchronize with him, elevate him into Bloodfang Apex, support him with moon-derived power, and help drain the transformation so he can revert. The apex state changes his fur to light-absorbing black, creates obsidian claws, intensifies strength, speed, regeneration, and energy attacks, and lets him overpower Gary and Edvard together. It also diminishes rational control: once Ylva dies during the full-moon war, Lupus remains trapped in an instinct-led True Alpha state until the medallion transports him. The Luna bond is therefore both the activation route and a principal counter or safety mechanism. Gary's Dragon Ash form can injure Bloodfang Apex, and the other-world suppression removes it entirely. (Chapters 1316–1323, 1488–1529, and 1739)

Yeti ice and Leviathan progression

Consuming Ice gives Lupus a stable Mythical Yeti adaptation. He can generate ice pillars, walls, cages, spears, internal frost, and decoys; spread cold through claw wounds; freeze water attacks; and leave frost across the ground with physical impacts. The adaptation also improves healing, stamina, and resilience, while visible signs include enlarged shoulders and frozen, needle-like fur tips. Qi training later improves his control and output. Heat and sufficient raw force can break the constructs, opponents with their own ice affinity can contest them, and maintaining large attacks contributes to his finite energy expenditure. Don's consumption increases Lupus's elemental density and strength rather than immediately giving him a controlled Leviathan transformation. In the final war it enables greater ice production and supports a later sea-dragon form, but the exact biological boundary between Don's water traits, the Yeti's ice, and Lupus's own Alpha power is not fully explained. Grief at Galdark's death finally activates the form: scales spread through his fur, a heavy tail becomes an ice blade, bites freeze limbs, and a blue breath beam freezes Unzoku's body and internal organs. Unlike Bloodfang Apex, Lupus remains lucid and follows new combat instincts without losing control. (Chapters 1504–1510 and 1812–1817)

The Leviathan form is extremely powerful but brief. Its breath and freezing attacks disable Unzoku's healing long enough to make him flee, yet the transformation then reverts Lupus all the way to human and consumes every accessible reserve. He cannot form claws afterward and remains too weak to join the final battle even after eating and resting; forcing Qi through his armor supplies only artificial support. The corpus does not show him transforming again during the following two years, so whether the form can be deliberately reactivated or whether his ordinary werewolf power fully returns remains unknown. Qi, weapons, and forging

Lupus first encounters disciplined Qi in the other world, where human knights can reinforce their bodies, accelerate attacks, resist his strength, and project force through weapons. He learns to circulate the energy deliberately, reinforce his body, add it to claw strikes, and control his absorbed element with greater precision. In his rematch with Unzoku, Qi lets him generate shockwaves, withstand blows, and infuse frost through contact. It is a finite reserve: sustained reinforcement and high-output attacks leave his limbs numb and his defense progressively weaker, while forging multiple high-grade items after the battle nearly incapacitates him. (Chapters 1595–1669, 1680, and 1810–1824)

Jack's world also restores lost werewolf forging knowledge. Lupus learns to read beast-crystal clarity and affinity, channel Qi into a crystal matrix, and make equipment that changes size with a transformed wearer. His own shield can anchor him gravitationally, draw attacks toward its face, store energy from blocked blows for a cutting release, and share anchoring with nearby pack members. Those effects depend on the forged item and its crystals, not Lupus's body; Anchor has a short cooldown, stored force requires prior blocks, transmitted shock can still injure him, and Unzoku eventually cracks the shield. Lupus's later armor keeps him mobile after his biological energy collapses, while the armor and weapons he makes for Gary and Kai amplify their Qi, adapt to their forms, and materially support the final victory. Relationships

• Gary Dem: Lupus first knows Gary as a dangerous outside Alpha and later learns he is Dean's son. Their inherited conflict becomes mutual respect after each refuses opportunities to destroy the other; the other-world trial turns that respect into an alliance, and Lupus ultimately treats Gary as the family member who will carry their kind forward.
• Dean: Dean is Lupus's younger brother, adviser, and first Alpha rival. Lupus's pride and pack-first worldview drive Dean away, but he never stops caring for him; their later reconciliation and Dean's family reveal make Gary's survival personal rather than merely political.
• Kai: Kai begins as another rival Alpha created during Unzoku's scheme. The two fight repeatedly before sharing the other-world trial, where Lupus respects Kai's planning and trains beside him. Lupus later forges adaptive armor and paired weapons for him and accepts all three Alphas as part of one family.
• Ylva: Ylva is Lupus's Luna, strategic partner, and the person able to raise or calm his Bloodfang Apex state. He trusts her power but rejects her proposed attack when he believes it would serve the vampires; her death leaves him trapped in the apex frenzy and ends the old pack's central bond.
• Galdark: Galdark serves Lupus's father and then Lupus as Bookkeeper, teacher, adviser, and friend. His guidance helps Lupus endure Dean's departure and govern the pack. His death protecting Lupus awakens the Leviathan form, and Lupus answers by preserving Galdark's memory and arranging the next Bookkeeper.
• Unzoku: Unzoku offers freedom from the full-moon curse at the price of relentless pack expansion, then controls Lupus when the Alpha questions the bargain. Lupus's hatred of that violation becomes the basis for his alliance with Gary and Kai; in their rematch he proves immune to the old control, critically wounds Unzoku, and helps prepare the force that kills him.
• Steve and Jack: The ancient Dem brothers give Lupus evidence that two Alphas can coexist and show him werewolf traditions lost in his era. Steve's pack restores his experience of earned communal loyalty, while Jack recognizes his forging talent and directs him to recreate rather than merely search for the old equipment.
• Slit and Luzen: Both Ironfangs serve Lupus through the old pack's wars. Lupus leaves them with the Howlers after reconciliation because unity matters more than restoring his command; both later choose to join his secluded life in Ruin City, with Slit acting as his messenger to Gary.
