Numba
Numba is the adopted son and sole heir of Harry Cardenez, a Goat Altered whose academy alliance with Gary Dem, Izzy, and Ian grows into a lasting commitment to the Howlers. His direct, explosive fighting style is matched by a stubborn loyalty that repeatedly draws him back to Slough when the Cardenez family and the Howlers face a common threat.
Biography
Earning a Place at the AFA
Numba enters the AFA assessment without the branded clothing or social assurance of the wealthier applicants. When other candidates ridicule the white horns of his partial transformation, Gary publicly defends him, but Numba does not immediately mistake that gesture for trustworthiness. He refuses Gary's first offer of an alliance because admission is his only chance and because experience has taught him to expect people to act for their own benefit. Once the successful candidates learn how heavily family and gang influence shape the preliminary facility, Numba admits that a Tier-3 electronics company adopted him for his potential and intends to make him its public face. This leaves him conscious that failure could harm more than his own prospects and explains both his caution and his determination to advance on merit. (Chapters 360–371)
Gary's willingness to defy the facility's hierarchy nevertheless pushes Numba to stop submitting to Sty, the high-ranked student whose outside connections threaten the Cardenez family. Numba challenges Sty and is decisively beaten because his straight-line power cannot catch a flying opponent, then tries to distance Gary rather than let the dispute spread to another friend. Gary refuses to abandon him, trains with him, and helps him develop the timing and changes of direction needed for a rematch. Numba endures a broken horn and temporary blindness to force a simultaneous knockout, only for the supervisors to void the result; devastated that he has failed to earn passage beside Gary, he accepts Gary's transfer of rank and enters the full academy with the others. There he takes the special combat lessons seriously, develops under Crowley, and settles into a close academy group with Gary, Izzy, and Ian. (Chapters 380–440)
The Cardenez Crisis and Notsburg
As the Cardenez heir, Numba is called home to observe negotiations over the company's expansion and learns firsthand how exposed the family is to stronger city gangs. He loves Harry as his father but fears that failure could cost him the home he gained through adoption; when the Scatterbugs retaliate against Harry's refusal to surrender control of the company, Numba initially tries to keep the crisis away from his academy friends. That decision collapses after attackers use Izzy as bait. Numba charges them to protect her, is overwhelmed by their numbers, and blames himself for her injuries. From the hospital he finally asks Gary to help his family, while still pleading that Gary not sacrifice his place at the academy on Numba's behalf. (Chapters 488–521)
Gary answers by mobilizing the Howlers. Numba leaves the academy with Izzy and Ian because he recognizes that their alliance obliges him to share the danger rather than wait in safety, and he is shaken when he learns that Gary is not merely sponsored by the gang but leads it. The revelation clarifies why Gary could commit an entire organization to the Cardenez cause, while also deepening Numba's sense of responsibility for what the Howlers risk. He and his two classmates therefore fight through the Scatterbugs' casino forces instead of standing aside; Harry and the Freaks later arrive to support them, confirming that the Cardenez group will share the consequences of the Howlers' campaign. The conflict preserves the alliance that the Scatterbugs had tried to break and turns Numba's school friendship with Gary into a durable bond between their groups. (Chapters 521–564)
Defending Slough from the Phoenix Gang
Numba later fights a few AFC matches, gaining enough recognition to benefit Cardenez Electronics, then leaves the circuit to help with the family business while continuing to train. When the Phoenix Gang attacks Slough and threatens both the Howlers and their allies, Harry sends him to reinforce Burnham Food Street: Numba understands that a Howlers defeat would leave the Cardenez group exposed in turn. Reunited with Izzy and Ian, he helps break the first wave, then charges Raven alongside Marie and Olivia. Raven catches his strongest opening blow and, after assuming a Hydra form, repeatedly exceeds the trio's single-target power. Although injured, Numba keeps returning to the fight and resists retreat until Izzy physically pulls him and Ian away after Raven's transformation grows too dangerous. The defeat at Burnham Food Street demonstrates the limit of Numba's courage and raw force against an enemy whose scale, regeneration, and acidic blood invalidate a direct assault, but it does not end his support for Slough. (Chapters 850–879)
The Lupus War and the Last Reinforcements
Numba answers Kai's later summons and joins the coalition assembled against Lupus. At the hilltop restaurant he, Izzy, and Ian use their long-practiced teamwork to protect ordinary Howlers from attacking werewolves: Numba improvises by throwing Innu's fallen bristles, then transforms to drive individual attackers away. Their effectiveness depends on covering one another, however, and the Ironfang Slit exploits their limited reach and attention, overpowering Numba's strongest strike and forcing Gary to intervene. Numba obeys Gary's order to return to the restaurant, fights on despite his injuries, and helps hold the line until the survivors can regroup. After the costly battle he remains with the exhausted Altereds and then works with the academy group and White Rose survivors to tend the wounded and recover the dead, shifting from combat to the grim responsibilities left by the victory. (Chapters 1361, 1400–1430, 1485–1515)
Numba remains available when Slough faces another coordinated assault. He returns with Izzy, Ian, and other regional Altereds as reinforcements during the Glutton attacks, helping stabilize the city while the enemy withdraws toward Unzoku. By the end of the supplied story he is still part of Gary's enduring circle, present with the other longtime allies on Gary's wedding day. (Chapters 1820 and 1847)
Appearance and personality
The corpus gives few fixed details of Numba's ordinary appearance. At his AFA entrance, his lack of branded clothing and his posture mark him out to richer applicants. His partial Goat Altered transformation produces two large white horns; with greater transformation the horns curl backward beyond his head before turning forward, and long white fur grows over his arms. (Chapters 360, 365, and 517)
Numba is blunt, wary of unearned trust, and highly sensitive to obligations. His fear of losing the family that adopted him initially makes him cautious around powerful backgrounds, but it also drives his discipline and gratitude toward Harry. Once he accepts someone as an ally, that caution becomes stubborn loyalty: he risks his academy standing for Gary, leaves safety rather than let Gary face Notsburg alone, and repeatedly returns to defend Slough. His persistence can become self-endangering, as shown by his refusal to concede against Sty and his reluctance to retreat from Raven even after the fight becomes unwinnable. (Chapters 364, 382–394, 513–521, and 879)
Powers and abilities
Numba is a manufactured Altered whose form is based on a goat or ram-like creature. The transformation enhances his strength, speed, resilience, and recovery, while its most visible features are white fur and heavy curled horns. The corpus does not identify the serum's exact creature, grade, or acquisition procedure. His body can recover from injuries faster than an ordinary human, but severe accumulated damage still requires medical care and can leave him unable to continue fighting. (Chapters 360, 394, 517–521, and 866)
Explosive charge
Numba's signature movement is an explosive push from his legs. He uses it to close distance abruptly, ram opponents with his horns, or add momentum to a punch, and he can strike a durable ball hard enough to send it back like a projectile. Training with Gary teaches him to hold a crouched stance, keep his front toward a mobile opponent, halt an initial rush, pivot, and launch a second burst. That sequence lets him finally touch Sty after an earlier one-sided loss. (Chapters 365, 382–383, and 392)
The technique is powerful but narrow. Each burst requires another forceful kick from the ground, repeated acceleration tires Numba, and abrupt stops strain his joints. Agile or airborne enemies can move into his blind side after the commitment, while a stronger opponent can simply catch the attack. His simultaneous knockout against Sty also shows the danger of adding his own upward acceleration to an incoming blow: the same momentum that strengthens his counter increases the force he suffers. Raven and Slit later stop his strongest charges without being displaced, establishing that the technique cannot overcome every difference in power. (Chapters 382–383, 392–393, 851, and 1401–1403)
Close combat and teamwork
AFA instruction and repeated combat make Numba more than a straight-line rammer. He learns to time punches with his bursts, track an opponent by rotating his stance, improvise with available projectiles, and fight in formation with Izzy and Ian. Their usual pattern combines Izzy's restraint, Ian's bristles, and Numba's impact power, allowing the three to cover angles and isolate individual targets. This coordination remains effective against ordinary Altereds and werewolves, but their powers lack broad area control, and elite enemies such as Slit can break the formation by forcing all three to concentrate on him. (Chapters 392–393, 850–879, and 1400–1403)
Relationships
- Gary Dem: Gary first defends Numba from ridicule, then earns his trust through training and by committing the Howlers to save the Cardenez family. Numba becomes one of Gary's most persistent outside allies.
- Harry: Harry is Numba's adoptive father and names him the sole heir to Cardenez Electronics. Numba's gratitude and fear of losing this family shape his academy ambitions, while Harry ultimately supports his choice to fight beside the Howlers.
- Izzy: Izzy is one of Numba's closest academy friends and recurring combat partners. Her injury while being used as bait intensifies his guilt, and her judgment repeatedly balances his tendency to remain in hopeless fights.
