Izzy

Izzy is an Altered fighter, an academy friend of Numba and Ian, and a recurring ally of the Howlers. She begins the AFA entrance assessment unable to transform reliably, graduates into the AFC, and later leaves professional fighting to help her family business. That civilian direction does not end her combat role: attacks on her Burnham restaurant and successive wars bring her back beside the same teammates whose coordinated fighting she helped build.

Biography

An unreliable transformation and a durable academy team

At sixteen, Izzy enters the AFA assessment alongside her previous schoolmates Ian and Tick. Like Tick, she initially cannot call up her Altered form on demand, so she compensates by directing their small alliance and trying to protect its numbers. Tick is eliminated and Ian is injured during the assessment, but Izzy earns admission. At the academy she trains intensely, explains the quarterly route toward an AFC debut, and becomes part of a four-person friendship with Ian, Numba, and Gary. (Chapters 365–374 and 494)

That loyalty makes her a target when older Scatterbugs students use her to lure Numba into an ambush. Izzy is injured, and Numba's attempt to defend her leaves him badly beaten before Gary and Xin Clove intervene. Rather than retreat from the danger around their friends, Izzy and Ian later follow Numba to Notsburg and fight beside the Howlers. Her now-reliable hair transformation lets the trio restrain and strike stronger enemies in sequence, but their encounter with Midwak also proves that her most useful limb-like strands can be cut and that the resulting pain is severe. (Chapters 517–518 and 526–564)

Professional fighting and a business under attack

Izzy progresses from the AFA into the AFC and takes several professional matches. The resulting recognition benefits her family enough that she leaves the league to help with its business rather than pursue a championship. She continues training with Numba and Ian, preserving both her transformation and their team coordination. Her first prominent business success is a luxury seafood restaurant on Burnham food street, linking her adult civilian work to territory protected by the Howlers. (Chapters 668, 773–775, and 851)

The Phoenix Gang attacks that restaurant as part of its campaign against Slough. Izzy watches the venue burn and flood, then chooses to help evacuate customers and fight despite her anger over the destruction. Fire blocks and knocks aside her hair, preventing her from controlling a flame-tailed opponent as she normally would. She later returns with Numba and Ian when the war concentrates on Slough; when Olivia and Marie are incapacitated by a painful evolution, Izzy uses her hair to carry both women while retreating, preserving the stronger fighters until they can recover. (Chapters 773–776 and 850–879)

Holding the line against Lupus and the Gluttons

During Lupus's invasion, Izzy again fights as part of the academy trio. She launches hair strands as piercing projectiles, grabs and slams individual werewolves, and binds the Ironfang Slit so Numba and Ian can attack. Slit cuts free, and his Sun Dagger burns her hair back, demonstrating that their rehearsed single-target combinations cannot overcome every weapon or cover an entire battlefield. Izzy nevertheless survives the fighting and later uses her hair to throw an attacking wolf into the air for Ian's bristles, contributing to the line that protects the restaurant. (Chapters 1400–1403 and 1430)

Years later, Izzy returns with Numba, Ian, and other allied Altereds when Glutton attacks spread through Slough. The reinforcements help stabilize the city before the creatures withdraw. She is alive at the end of the corpus and attends Gary and Xin's wedding, her continued place among Gary's wider circle reflecting a friendship sustained beyond the academy and AFC. (Chapters 1820 and 1847–1848)

Appearance and personality

Izzy is introduced as a sixteen-year-old girl. Her hair is central to both her ordinary appearance and transformation: she braids it socially, while her Altered form grows and clumps it into six long, hand-like bundles. The corpus emphasizes the changing shape and reach of the hair more consistently than her other physical features. (Chapters 365, 494, and 533)

She is organized, competitive, and quick to take responsibility within a group. Izzy calls tactics during the entrance assessment, pushes her friends to train for advancement, and watches the battlefield closely enough to identify the most dangerous opponent during Lupus's attack. She can react emotionally when her work is destroyed, but her choices remain protective: she helps civilians escape, carries wounded allies, and retreats when continuing an unwinnable exchange would waste lives. (Chapters 365, 494, 775, 867, and 1401)

Powers and abilities

Transforming, prehensile hair

Izzy is an Altered whose transformation changes her hair into six separate hand-like appendages. She initially cannot activate the form reliably during the AFA assessment but gains control through academy training. The strands can extend, wrap around limbs, lift people, throw or slam targets, block blows, and brace her body for rapid repositioning. She can also narrow or harden portions into spear-like projectiles. Her best applications are restraint and setup: holding an enemy while Numba charges, suspending injured allies while moving, or throwing a target into Ian's line of fire. (Chapters 365, 533, 775, 867, and 1400–1430)

The transformed hair is described as rivaling steel in durability, but it is not inert armor. Its extensions contain nerves, so severing them causes intense pain, and Midwak's claws cut through them. Sharp blades can escape a binding, while strong fire forces the strands back or burns through an attack. The power is strongest at close range and against individual targets; Izzy and her teammates explicitly lack the large-area control needed to protect an entire front. Continued training makes her stronger and more coordinated, but the corpus does not show a separate evolved form or remove these counters. (Chapters 533, 775, and 1400–1403)

AFA combat training and teamwork

Izzy receives formal AFA training and later AFC experience. She learns timing, positioning, and how to combine a control-oriented ability with Numba's explosive force and Ian's bristles. Her alertness lets her call openings and switch between offense, extraction, and defense under pressure. This skill persists after she leaves the AFC because the trio keeps training. (Chapters 494, 533–564, 851, and 1400–1403)

Her limitations remain visible against elite or specialized opponents. She can be outmatched by stronger professional-level Altereds, Raven's Hydra form, Ironfang weapons, and large formations of werewolves. Izzy's contribution in those situations is often to create a short opening or preserve another fighter rather than secure a solo victory. (Chapters 775–776, 851–921, and 1400–1430)

Relationships

  • Numba: AFA teammate, friend, and frequent combat partner. Numba's attempt to protect her during the Scatterbugs ambush deepens their bond, while her restraint ability repeatedly creates the openings his charge attacks need. (Chapters 365, 517–564, 851–879, and 1400–1430)
  • Ian: Izzy's school friend and the other constant member of their trio. Her throws and bindings give Ian clear targets for his bristles, and their shared professional and family-business paths keep the team intact after the AFC. (Chapters 365–494, 533–564, 851, and 1430)
  • Gary Dem: Gary helps her and Numba during the academy ambush, after which Izzy repeatedly supports his city and allies. She remains part of his wider circle through the final Glutton crisis and wedding. (Chapters 365–518, 1820, and 1847–1848)
  • Olivia and Marie: Izzy fights beside the two Howlers during the Phoenix war. When their evolution leaves them helpless, she carries both away with her hair rather than abandoning them or trying to hold the line alone. (Chapters 850–879)

Items

Izzy has no finalized configured inventory item. Her principal combat tool is her transformed hair, which is part of her Altered body rather than separate equipment.
