Zong Ling

Zong Ling is a Six-Armed Serpent Demon who manages Snow Eagle Territory and becomes a guardian to Dong Bo Xue Ying and Dong Bo Qing Shi after their parents are taken. A former adventuring companion of their parents, he combines a veteran's caution with the loyalty of family: he keeps the territory functioning, helps direct Xue Ying's early responsibilities, and repeatedly accepts care of Qing Shi when Xue Ying must face dangers beyond Zong Ling's own strength.

Biography

Guardianship of Snow Eagle Territory

Zong Ling's bond with the Dong Bo household begins before the children need him as a guardian. He had shared repeated life-and-death adventures with Dong Bo Lie, Mo Yang Yu, and Tong San, and he regarded both parents as close companions. When the Mo Yang clan came to take the couple away, Zong Ling understood that none of them could overcome the warrant without a Transcendent's power. He suppressed his grief rather than pretend resistance would succeed, accepted Mo Yang Yu's charge to manage the territory and instruct her sons, and promised that she could entrust the family to him. (Chapter 3)

He responded to eight-year-old Dong Bo Xue Ying's desperation by giving it a concrete direction. Zong Ling proposed that Xue Ying first obtain the Dragon Mountain Mansion's Black Iron Order before learning the details needed to rescue his parents; he privately described this as giving the child hope, not as a promise that the Order alone would free them. He then explained the standard behind that goal: a lord must control and protect his land, destroy those who invade it, and become stronger than the territory's existing guardians. His lesson came from immediate experience. While tracking the Bent Blade Union after its raids, he had been ambushed by its Meteor-rank leader Ge Bin, held him off despite being only Heaven rank, and returned with serious internal injuries after three blade strikes. Zong Ling's stewardship was practical as well as martial. He and Tong San kept the castle's routine intact after the parents' removal, while Zong Ling worried about the exhausted Xue Ying having to soothe a younger brother who was still frightened by their nonhuman forms. As Xue Ying grew into the lordship, Zong Ling managed finances, paid for equipment according to Xue Ying's decisions, received important visitors, screened routine guests, and continued running castle affairs while Xue Ying cultivated in seclusion or undertook Dragon Mountain missions. He also advised without trying to replace Xue Ying's judgment: he questioned the risks of teachers and missions, but accepted the young lord's reasoned choices and carried them out once made. The Mountain Range and a changing role

His protectiveness did not make him complacent about his own cultivation. Proud of his royal Serpent Demon lineage and frustrated by the Heaven-to-Meteor bottleneck, he repeatedly entered the outer Mountain Range of Desolation to temper himself. When Xue Ying planned to hunt the Bent Blade Union and obtain a Silver Moon Wolf King's heart, Zong Ling judged that the teenager was already stronger but lacked real life-and-death experience; he chose to accompany him because he knew the mountain's perimeter and could help manage risks. In the expedition he warned Xue Ying away from unwinnable situations, read tracks and terrain, watched how quickly the young fighter adapted, and confronted the limits of his own protection when a Shadow Leopard ignored him as harmless. Rather than deny that disparity, he withdrew when Xue Ying ordered it, searched anxiously after the battle, and then used his six arms to process the wolf king's remains once Xue Ying won. Their return route brought the two into Ge Bin's prepared ambush. Zong Ling urged immediate escape from the encirclement and evaded the hunting nets beside Xue Ying; once Xue Ying's thrown spears broke the bandit force, Zong Ling cornered survivors, searched the fallen leader, and recognized that the victory had removed Water Rites Town's greatest recurring threat. He initially refused the captured magical storage ring because Xue Ying had destroyed the union, then accepted it to hold money for the territory when Xue Ying insisted. The expedition therefore changed their working relationship: Zong Ling remained the experienced adviser and administrator, but Xue Ying had become the decisive protector whose victories supplied the household Zong Ling managed. Black-Wind Cliff and the family afterward

Zong Ling eventually broke through to Meteor rank after six more years, yet his first priority remained the household rather than displaying the advancement. He welcomed Xue Ying home, handled contact with noble visitors, worried about the escalating danger of missions undertaken to save the parents, and investigated threats around Qing Shi. When the brothers quarreled, he consoled Xue Ying by reminding him that Qing Shi had grown up protected from setbacks and might only understand his elder brother's sacrifices later. His role was not that of a passive retainer: he mediated between family members, organized responses, and remained one of the few people Xue Ying trusted with the household's most dangerous secrets. That trust became critical when Xiang Pang Yun attacked Snowrock Castle. At Xue Ying's instruction, Zong Ling immediately abandoned collecting spoils and moved to Qing Shi's side; Qing Shi in turn treated him as the nearest person he could trust. Zong Ling accurately explained the assassin's danger, kept the younger brother at a defensible vantage point near the underground escape route, and accepted Bai Yuan Zhi's evacuation by Black-Moon Centipede so the family could not be taken hostage. He and Tong San physically restrained the distraught Qing Shi when the aerial beast had to flee, while Zong Ling internally renewed his promise to care for the boy if Xue Ying did not survive. After Xue Ying vanished into the Black-Wind Abyss, Zong Ling converted grief into the same steady responsibility he had shown during the parents' arrest. He reacted fastest in demanding an immediate rescue attempt, then persuaded Qing Shi to return to Snowrock Castle by pointing out that Xue Ying could emerge elsewhere and would naturally go home. He maintained courtesy while giving Lord Si An an exact account of the battle, defended the truth of Xue Ying's final attack on Xiang Pang Yun, and supported Xue Ying's warning about Ji Rong while still allowing Qing Shi to decide how to receive her. During Xue Ying's absence, the territory did not install Qing Shi as lord because Qing Shi insisted on leaving the position vacant; after Xue Ying returned, Zong Ling reported the younger brother's refusal and long vigil to him. Xue Ying's survival and Transcendence brought Zong Ling the reunion he had helped keep possible. He was the first of the household to react to the news that Xue Ying had become a Transcendent, then later rushed with Tong San to embrace Dong Bo Lie and Mo Yang Yu when Xue Ying rescued them. Zong Ling remained part of family discussions afterward without pressing his views on Transcendent affairs, and Xue Ying continued to regard him as a loved one rather than an employee. The scale of the family changed—from a vulnerable minor territory to the household of a Transcendent—but Zong Ling's place in it remained that of trusted uncle, steward, and old companion. His cultivation did not rise at the same pace as the younger people around him: by Chapter 133, Xue Ying notes that Zong Ling's royal lineage and good early cultivation method had made him unusually strong at the same mortal rank, but not a fast advancer, and he had not reached Legend rank despite Xue Ying's resources. Zong Ling is still present to welcome Xue Ying in Chapter 189, after which the supplied corpus gives no continuous account of his later life. A Chapter 780 fragment places him in the Monarch Dong Bo residence and states that he and the other named family members had been Deities for more than ten thousand years, but it does not preserve how he advanced or what abilities he gained. Chapter 1388 reveals only that he has died by then and remains among the family and friends Xue Ying most misses. Appearance and personality

Zong Ling is a silver-haired Six-Armed Serpent Demon with six arms, a serpent tail, sharp fingernails, and the inborn physical traits of Snake Clan royalty. Early scenes place him in black robes. His tail and multiple arms are conspicuous enough to frighten the two-year-old Qing Shi, though that childhood fear fades as Zong Ling becomes one of the boy's closest guardians. The corpus does not provide a fuller stable description of his face, height, or apparent age. (Chapters 3–4, 19, and 30)

He is normally calm, restrained, and meticulous. At the moment his closest companions are taken, he clenches his hands hard enough to pierce his palms but struggles to speak, because openly displaying grief is foreign to him. The same control lets him manage a castle through crisis, report painful facts accurately, and continue basic courtesy while mourning Xue Ying. He is also pragmatic about failure: his years as an adventurer taught him that long effort does not guarantee a desired result, a lesson he offers when Xue Ying assumes that a prolonged treasure search must have succeeded. Under that reserve, Zong Ling is affectionate and fiercely loyal. He comes to regard Xue Ying like his own child, worries when his strength is insufficient to help, and repeatedly accepts responsibility for Qing Shi without resentment. He is proud of his Serpent Demon heritage and harsh in his self-training, but not too proud to admit that Xue Ying has surpassed him or to retreat when staying would only create another person to protect. His counsel is therefore cautious rather than timid: he advises against unnecessary danger, yet personally enters the Mountain Range of Desolation and places himself between the territory and threats he can meaningfully resist. Abilities and cultivation

Zong Ling's intact early record presents a mortal knight whose combat strength combines qi cultivation, a Six-Armed Serpent Demon's body, and extensive adventuring experience. He advances from Heaven rank to Meteor rank in that account. A much later fragment independently establishes that he became a Deity, but the intervening progression is missing, and the corpus names no signature qi art or formal sword technique for him.

Knight cultivation and progression

As a member of Snake Clan royalty, Zong Ling had access to a good cultivation method and began training from youth. He is already a Heaven-rank knight when Xue Ying is a child and deliberately tempers himself in the Mountain Range of Desolation in pursuit of the Meteor rank. The exact breathing method, qi quality, and breakthrough mechanism are not described. What the corpus demonstrates is sustained effort followed by eventual success: six years after taking responsibility for Snow Eagle Territory, he has reached Meteor rank. (Chapters 7, 16, and 36)

The advancement has clear limits. At Heaven rank, he can briefly resist an ordinary Meteor knight because of his species' physical advantages, but Ge Bin's unusually fast blade still lands three strikes and causes internal injuries. Six-Armed Serpent Demon physique and blade combat

Zong Ling's royal Six-Armed Serpent Demon body gives him six arms capable of simultaneous attacks, a tail that adds agility, and greater combat effectiveness than an ordinary knight at the same cultivation rank. He wields six scimitars while training and can coordinate six knives with enough precision to rapidly dissect a Silver Moon Wolf King. His tail functions as both a balance and movement tool: by bracing and releasing it like a slingshot, he can leap dozens of meters between trees, while in dangerous terrain it lets him retreat rapidly into a high perch. These traits make him especially suitable for group combat and mobile survival. (Chapters 7, 19–21, and 56)

His physique also improves endurance and recovery. After Ge Bin cuts him three times, Refined Gold Armor prevents the blows from becoming fatal and his Serpent Demon constitution is expected to recover from the resulting internal injuries within one or two months. Neither advantage makes him invulnerable: he admits that he can only hold a stronger Meteor knight for a limited time, cannot injure a rank-five Shadow Leopard while at Heaven rank, and must rely on armor, soldiers' crossbows, terrain, or withdrawal when an opponent exceeds him. He also observes Xue Ying's adaptation during real combat and distinguishes technical strength from experience under lethal pressure. These skills support rather than replace combat power: Xue Ying's sharper senses detect several dangers before Zong Ling does, and Zong Ling cannot locate or defeat every hidden threat himself. As steward, he applies the same judgment to people and resources. He screens visitors, arranges investigations, manages the territory's money, preserves secrecy around magical items, and advises Xue Ying about the political weight of nobles and the escalating risk of Dragon Mountain missions. He is trusted to act independently on routine matters, but consistently recognizes Xue Ying as the territory lord and brings grave decisions back to him.
