About the novel

Dungeon Crawler Carl begins when an alien corporation collapses every covered structure on Earth and invites the survivors into a televised dungeon. Carl, a former Coast Guard serviceman and marine electrician, enters with his ex-girlfriend's cat Donut. An enhanced pet biscuit makes Donut sapient, turning an improvised rescue into a partnership that must perform for a hostile audience while surviving rules designed to create dramatic deaths.

Each floor introduces new game structures, sponsors, factions, and populations whose suffering is packaged as entertainment. Carl develops from reluctant crawler into bombmaker, battlefield planner, and revolutionary, while Donut becomes a guild leader and political personality in her own right. Their alliances with crawlers and non-player inhabitants challenge the distinction the syndicate uses to justify exploitation.

World and dungeon progression

The crawl uses levels, stats, classes, races, skills, spells, achievements, loot boxes, equipment, quests, sponsors, and floor-specific rules. The dungeon's artificial intelligence interprets those rules with increasing personality, while production staff and corporate interests manipulate encounters for ratings. Popularity can bring resources and protection but also pressures crawlers to become characters the audience will continue watching.

Carl's class development, explosives, traps, and engineering knowledge reward preparation and creative readings of mechanics. Donut relies on Charisma, magic, social influence, and command of the Royal Court. Later floors introduce faction wars in which outside powers purchase participation, revealing that advancement through the dungeon is inseparable from the political economy profiting from Earth's destruction.
