Prism Industries Capacitating and Focusing Goggles
The Prism Industries Capacitating and Focusing Goggles, Special High-Fashion Edition “The Princess Donut,” are unique eyewear made for Donut. Princess D’Nadia sends them as a benefactor gift, combining Donut’s preferred glamorous appearance with protection, alternate visual modes, and a major upgrade to her ocular spellcasting.
History
D’Nadia’s tailored gift
Donut receives the one-of-a-kind goggles during the Iron Tangle and immediately adopts them as both couture and combat gear. The large round lenses have no arms and remain magically fixed to her face, though she can remove them when desired. More importantly, they focus Magic Missile into laser-like beams: Donut can fire at four targets, store one shot’s energy, and add it to the next. The eyewear also protects her eyes from environmental hazards; during a fight in a train car, the lenses keep gore out of her eyes even though she must repeatedly clean their obscured surfaces. (Chapters 89 and 96)
The goggles also expand Donut’s battlefield awareness. Their targeting information helps reveal Hekla’s attempt to kill Katia, and Donut learns that splitting the focused attack among three or more targets reduces the power delivered to each. This makes the goggles more than a raw damage increase: they let her choose between concentrated force and simultaneous coverage, while still depending on the spell’s available energy. (Chapters 90, 98, and 104)
From targeting aid to magical reconnaissance
A later benefactor box upgrades the goggles rather than supplying a separate item. The revision greatly improves their ability to read precise surface and subsurface temperatures, making them suitable for detecting the hotter brains of changelings. The many settings and visual overlays require adjustment, and Donut initially needs coaching and practice before the added information becomes usable under pressure. She subsequently employs heat signatures to aim against otherwise difficult targets. (Chapters 116, 118, and 140)
By the later floors, Donut uses a magic-flow mode to inspect phenomena that ordinary vision cannot resolve. It reveals a power-siphoning process, helps expose concealed race gates, and identifies changing magical anomalies during the eleventh-floor operation. These late uses show the goggles developing into a general diagnostic and reconnaissance instrument rather than remaining solely a Magic Missile focus. They are still in Donut’s possession at the latest explicit use. (Chapters 380, 469, and 480)
Abilities and properties
- The goggles protect the wearer’s eyes from multiple environmental hazards, including magical blindness. Physical material can still coat the lenses and block the view until cleaned. (Chapters 89 and 96)
- They enhance dark-vision effects and offer heat vision and other visible-light modes. A benefactor upgrade later adds detailed surface and subsurface temperature measurement. (Chapters 89, 116, and 118)
- Energy spells originating around the eyes are caught and focused. With Magic Missile, Donut can produce laser-like attacks, distribute them across four targets, or store one shot and add its energy to the next. (Chapter 89)
- Dividing the focused spell among several targets reduces the power delivered to each, so maximum coverage and maximum damage cannot be obtained at the same time. (Chapter 90)
- Targeting overlays can expose information about a chosen target, but useful interpretation depends on the correct mode, configuration, and Donut’s attention. (Chapters 98, 104, 116, and 118)
- Magic-flow mode visualizes active magical processes and hidden magical structures. It provides perception rather than automatically explaining or neutralizing what Donut sees. (Chapters 380, 469, and 480)
