Mordecai’s Special Brew

Mordecai’s Special Brew is an emergency potion created by Mordecai. By combining Gold Standard healing with Troll’s Second Wind, it supplies thirty seconds of continuous healing and regeneration at the cost of a severe potion-sickness period and a strict lifetime effectiveness limit.

History

A manager’s emergency reserve

Mordecai develops the brew after becoming Donut’s manager and gaining access to her alchemy table. His first demonstrated batch contains only two doses because the necessary supplies are scarce, though he immediately plans to make more. The item description calls its effect de facto immortality, but Mordecai corrects that shorthand: the potion continually repairs damage for thirty seconds and can keep a user alive through repeated catastrophic injuries, yet it cannot reverse an instant-kill event such as decapitation or total destruction. (Chapter 81)

The brew becomes part of Carl’s emergency hotlist during the Iron Tangle. He finally drinks it when Grull’s area attack and trampling repeatedly shatter his body; accelerated healing restores the damage each time before the next impact. The survival comes with a long vulnerability afterward, since Carl remains unable to drink another potion for roughly ten hours and enters the following floor with several hours still on that countdown. (Chapters 95, 107, and 110)

Rescue plans on the fifth floor

Carl reserves a dose for Donut during the collapse of the gnomish castle, instructing her to use it if her health falls too low. She does not drink it; Carl shields her and uses ordinary healing instead. The episode demonstrates the brew’s role as a contingency rather than a routine buff, especially when the party expects intense damage but cannot know whether the blow will cross the potion’s instant-death limit. (Chapter 131)

Later, Carl loads a dose into a potion ball and throws it into the wounded Orthrus before Quan Ch can finish the divine hound. The brew immediately restores Orthrus to full health and holds him through the next attack. Delivering it by potion ball extends the recipe’s usefulness to targets Carl cannot safely reach, while still requiring an accurate hit and prior confirmation from Mordecai that the potion will affect the intended creature. (Chapter 140)

Faction Wars surgery

Donut continues carrying a dose into Faction Wars and keeps it available as an emergency defense while commanding from the Nest. When Louis’s heart and lungs fail, the remaining brew becomes the healing window for an improvised organ transplant. Donut pours it directly into his open chest after the damaged organs are removed, and its thirty seconds of extreme recovery give Mordecai, Juice Box, and the other assistants enough time to position and activate the replacement naiad organs. (Chapters 380 and 388–389)

The operation also shows the potion’s practical limit: the healing period does not perform surgery, choose viable tissue, or solve the replacement organs’ incompatibilities. The team still needs donor organs, a rebreather, Water Breathing, flesh manipulation, surgical access, and precise timing. The brew prevents Louis from dying while those other interventions are completed. (Chapter 389)

Abilities and properties

  • The potion combines Gold Standard healing with Troll’s Second Wind, creating a continuous stream of accelerated healing and regeneration for thirty seconds. (Chapter 81)
  • Its effect is not true invulnerability. Repeated survivable trauma can be repaired, but instant death, decapitation, or sufficiently complete destruction can still kill the user. (Chapters 81 and 107)
  • Each dose adds roughly ten hours to potion sickness, preventing the recipient from safely using other potions during that period. (Chapters 81, 95, and 107–110)
  • The same person can benefit from only two doses before the brew stops working. Mordecai believes a crafting table above level nine might let him improve that restriction, but he has not demonstrated such a version. (Chapter 81)
  • The potion can be consumed normally, delivered through a potion ball, or applied directly during surgery, provided the dose reaches a valid recipient. (Chapters 107, 140, and 389)
  • Production depends on Mordecai’s alchemical expertise, ingredients, and table access; his first batch is limited by materials. (Chapter 81)
