Enchanted War Gauntlet of the Exalted Grull
The Enchanted War Gauntlet of the Exalted Grull is Carl’s principal right-hand weapon. Normally a charcoal wrist bracer, it transforms into a spiked orcish-steel gauntlet when he makes a fist or holds a hilted weapon, reinforcing the bare-knuckle style that becomes central to his build.
History
A weapon suited to the build
Carl receives the gauntlet from a brawler box and immediately recognizes it as the close-combat weapon he had been seeking. Its statistic and skill bonuses strengthen his established punching abilities without canceling the Bare Knuckle benefit, while its transforming form leaves his hand comparatively unencumbered between strikes. Early fights establish both sides of that design: the weapon adds enough force to cave in a monster’s head, but its two-second deployment is too slow to protect Carl when a grapple begins at point-blank range. Its low-probability Stun effect eventually activates for the first time and incapacitates a target for fifteen seconds. (Chapters 25, 32, and 45)
As Carl’s equipment becomes more specialized, the gauntlet remains his default punching weapon but competes for the same limb as his xistera. He cannot punch or summon the gauntlet while the throwing device covers his right hand, forcing him to switch equipment according to range. Bang Bro can temporarily add fire or electrical damage to the gauntlet, and its extra levels in Iron Punch and Powerful Strike combine with other equipment bonuses; once a boosted skill rises beyond level fifteen, however, equipment-derived increases supply diminishing benefits. (Chapters 65, 76, 80, 83, and 176)
Protection through later floors
The steel hand becomes useful for defense as well as damage. Carl uses it to catch an incoming sword and later relies on its formed metal to keep freezing, incorporeal ghommids from contacting his flesh. Both cases still require the gauntlet to be active before contact, preserving the risk created by its transformation delay. Carl continues using it through later operations, including Faction Wars and the eleventh-floor campaign. When a temporary dog transformation automatically unequips the incompatible item, the gauntlet returns to inventory rather than being destroyed or transferred. (Chapters 97, 231, 327, 426, 439, and 477)
Abilities and properties
- Closing the right hand into a fist or holding a hilted weapon for two seconds changes the wrist bracer into a black, angular, spiked gauntlet; opening the hand dismisses it. The delay can leave Carl exposed during sudden close grapples. (Chapters 25 and 32)
- In fist mode it grants three Strength, one Dexterity, two levels of Iron Punch, and one level of Powerful Strike. It does not negate the Bare Knuckle bonus, although equipment-granted skill levels become less effective above level fifteen. (Chapters 25 and 176)
- A successful hit has a two-percent chance to inflict Stun. The first observed activation holds its target for fifteen seconds, but the low chance makes the effect unreliable as a planned control tool. (Chapters 25 and 45)
- Bang Bro can temporarily enchant the formed gauntlet with fire or electrical damage. That effect is supplied by Carl’s spell rather than being a permanent property of the weapon. (Chapters 76, 80, 85, and 90)
- The armored hand can intercept edged weapons and insulate Carl’s flesh from dangerous contact, but only while the gauntlet is formed. (Chapters 97 and 231)
- A strike against an adherent of Grull carries a 1.5-percent chance of transforming the target into a Grull. The description presents this as a hazardous consequence rather than a controllable ability. (Chapter 25)
- The right-hand xistera and the gauntlet cannot be active together, and forms that cannot equip the gauntlet automatically return it to inventory. (Chapters 65 and 477)
