Sienna Merdein
Sienna Merdein is the legendary archwizard of Hamel's party, the creator of the modern Circle Magic Formula, and eventually the divine Guardian of Magic. Grief over Hamel's death and suspicion surrounding Vermouth's secrets drive her to preserve both Hamel's soul and the magical knowledge needed for a future reunion. After Eugene frees her from Raizakia's curse, she rejects the limits of human magic, becomes the Goddess of Magic, and fights beside her recovered companions through the wars against Noir, Incarceration, and Destruction. (Chapters 1, 44–47, 104–106, 302–315, 520–536, and 558–625)
Biography
From the Devildom to the World Tree
Sienna enters the final assault on the Demon King of Incarceration as the party's defining wizard, but no spell can reverse Hamel's fatal wounds. She tries desperately to save him with an elixir and weeps as he dies, carrying both grief and the unfinished promise to end the Demon Kings. When Incarceration later returns Hamel's body and soul as part of Vermouth's pact, Sienna seals the soul in a necklace instead of allowing it to pass on. She and Anise refuse to let Hamel disappear before their promise is fulfilled, turning private mourning into a centuries-long commitment to reunite with him. (Chapters 1, 106, and 217)
In the years after the war, Sienna transforms magical civilization rather than simply preserving her wartime strength. She formalizes Circle Magic, reaches the Ninth Circle, creates the Eternal Hole beyond that system's conventional endpoint, and records her lifetime of research in Witch Craft. She also creates Mer as an artificial intelligence patterned after her childhood self, leaving both a guardian for the grimoire and a companion capable of recognizing Hamel if he returns. Even the mocking fairy tale about “Stupid Hamel,” written with Anise so he would not be forgotten, reveals how Sienna converts loss into records designed to survive her. (Chapters 44–47, 53, 106, and 217)
Decades after Hamel's burial, the supposedly dead Vermouth appears in the tomb, throws Hamel's corpse before Sienna, and demands the necklace containing his soul. Sienna fights him but refuses to unleash her full power where it could destroy Hamel's memorial; Vermouth exploits that restraint, pierces her heart, and takes the necklace. Despite the betrayal, she notices that his manner is wrong and resists reducing his conduct to simple malice. Mortally wounded and deprived of the soul she meant to protect, Sienna teleports to the elves' World Tree in search of survival and an explanation. (Chapters 106 and 305–313)
Raizakia attacks before Sienna can recover, hoping to silence her investigation into Vermouth. Already wounded, she blocks the dragon's Breath to protect the elves, twists space to disrupt his magic, and banishes him between dimensions with the World Tree's roots, but his curse poisons her body and traps her in prolonged seclusion. Centuries later, Eugene reaches her through projection and dream before joining her magic against Raizakia in reality. Their restored teamwork dismantles the dragon's defenses; Eugene destroys his Dragon Heart, the poison clears, and Sienna returns to her body, Mer, and the companions with whom she can pursue the truth directly. (Chapters 104–106, 287–306, and 311–315)
Metamorphosis and Absolute Decree
Freedom does not make Sienna complacent. Her damaged Eternal Hole can support short battles but risks failure under prolonged strain, while opponents such as the Demon Kings of Incarceration and Destruction operate beyond the assumptions of ordinary human magic. Sienna nevertheless resumes the front line: she conceals and surveys a fleet, coordinates large-scale spells through her staffs, and fights beside Eugene and the Saints against Iris. The campaign restores the rhythm of Hamel's party, yet it also proves that mastery of the system Sienna created is not enough for the enemies still ahead. (Chapters 351, 357, 359–376, and 414–420)
Sienna answers that limit by developing Absolute Decree, a form of magic in which her will establishes the intended rule or result before the spell is completed. An attack can be commanded to hit rather than merely aimed, and destruction can become the predetermined outcome rather than a possibility dependent only on conventional calculation. She refuses to call the early form a completed Signature because strong opposing laws can still frustrate it: Destruction's alien power blocks it, Incarceration can redirect its imposed flow, and complex results demand more force and control than Sienna always possesses. Its incompleteness becomes a reason to investigate rather than a wound to her pride. (Chapters 454, 467, 473, 499, and 583)
The former Bloody Mary gives Sienna access to the memories and methods of earlier Staffs of Incarceration. She studies for days without food or sleep and abandons her old contempt for black magic when the evidence shows that ancient magic is deeper than its modern reputation. Combining mana with dark power produces soul power, a new force capable of giving even simple spells overwhelming weight, but early experiments escape her control and leave her exhausted. Absolute Decree contains those failures and later responds to her will almost instinctively, while Balzac's scholarship and elven traditions help her turn dangerous discoveries into the basis of a broader magical system. (Chapters 505 and 514–521)
Vishur Laviola, the ancient Sage associated with the roots of magic, finally confronts Sienna with the finitude of human spellcraft. Sienna listens without surrendering her identity, enters a flower-like cocoon for a year, and emerges through metamorphosis as a higher existence recognized as the Goddess and Guardian of Magic. She dismantles the Eternal Hole she once considered complete and replaces its self-reproducing Circles with genuinely infinite magic. The transformation lets her cast without incantations, comprehend and reproduce even Incarceration's chains, and apply Absolute Decree and soul power on a divine scale, though heavy exertion can still exhaust or incapacitate her. (Chapters 520–523, 536–538, 562, and 575)
Nightmare and Final War
Noir Giabella attacks Sienna through the future she privately wants: a peaceful home and library with Hamel nearby, far from the expectation that Wise Sienna must always be invincible. Sienna recognizes that happiness as sincere but rejects a fulfillment purchased by abandoning Eugene to Noir's dream. Outside Giabella City, she channels magic through Mary and the Saints' prayer, spreads vines across the city, locates Eugene's light, and shakes the nightmare hard enough for him to resist. She cannot simply erase Noir's Fantasy, so her victory depends on reaching Eugene and trusting him to choose wakefulness. (Chapters 549–558)
When Noir forces sleep again in direct battle, Sienna separates her soul from her body so a momentarily dead body cannot dream, then revives before the bond fails. The technique is dangerous because repetition weakens the connection between soul and flesh and can make death permanent. Wounded and refusing to retreat, she fires soul-power attacks, breaks Noir's chains, comprehends their structure with her new infinite magic, and binds the Demon Eye with copies of its own restraints. The effort brings Sienna to her knees, but it gives Eugene the opening needed to finish the battle and leaves her beside him through its grief rather than inside an invented peace. (Chapters 558–568)
During the assault on Babel, Sienna confronts Balzac and the legacy of black magic she once dismissed. Absolute Decree extends Empress Rule far enough to seize black magic, but she retracts that domination so Balzac can complete the final spell through which he chooses to oppose Incarceration. Sienna's soul power extinguishes and absorbs the sacrificial attack, and she kills him while acknowledging the research he contributed to her own growth. Against Incarceration, her Decree can still be deflected, but combining her divinity, Noir's Demoneye, Eugene's sanctuary, and the Saints' holy domain creates a shared force capable of suppressing his darkness. (Chapters 573 and 577–592)
Destruction's emergence tests whether Sienna will accept another victory built on a companion's solitary death. She insists that Vermouth deserves happiness, trusts Eugene to hold back Destruction, and enters its heart with Molon. Through Mary, the World Tree, the Sage, soul power, and Molon's wound in the heart, she forms a vine bow and drives the world's accumulated force into the enemy. The effort nearly empties her mana and Mary, but the companions destroy the heart and save Vermouth. In peace, Sienna supports Dynas Academy, prepares magic on the scale of moving a forest, and accepts Eugene's proposal as the ordinary future she had once been afraid to want. (Chapters 595–612 and 624–625)
Appearance and personality
Sienna is a beautiful human woman with long, wavy purple hair and large bright green eyes. She was born to human parents and raised among elves, but the corpus explicitly distinguishes her race from theirs. Portraits and memories preserve her recognizable features from the heroic era, and Eugene immediately recognizes them when he encounters her projection. Her adult appearance closely resembles Mer's design because Mer was modeled after Sienna's childhood self. Sienna can disguise herself through magic—temporarily turning her hair black when traveling incognito—but usually presents herself with the dramatic poise expected of the legendary Wise Lady. (Chapters 29, 99, 106, 340, 359, 515, and 520)
Her public dignity competes constantly with a blunt, proud, and mischievous temperament. Sienna enjoys being revered, is quick to anger when her competence is doubted, and revives her old habit of trading insults with Hamel as soon as she recognizes Eugene. She is intellectually confident enough to overturn established magical theory, yet practical weaknesses such as being unable to swim, sew, or cook puncture the remote image of the perfect archwizard. Her humor and vanity make her humanly approachable without diminishing the discipline behind centuries of research. (Chapters 106, 173, 340, and 402)
Beneath Sienna's confidence lies a lasting hatred of helplessness. Hamel's death, Vermouth's attack, and centuries immobilized by Raizakia make her especially resistant to being protected through secrecy or sacrifice. She can overwork herself, conceal fatigue, and meet uncertainty with aggression, but her stubbornness is directed toward keeping other people alive and present. Her development does not erase the grieving child or quarrelsome companion beneath Wise Sienna; it allows those selves to coexist with the goddess who still wants a home, family, and peaceful work after the war. (Chapters 1, 105–106, 311–315, 505, 554, and 604–625)
Abilities and powers
Sienna is the foremost wizard of her age and the architect of the magical system used throughout Aroth. Her progression joins systematic spellcraft, artifact-assisted calculation, ancient and black-magic research, soul manipulation, the World Tree, and divine metamorphosis. She is strongest when defining the rules of a battlefield, analyzing an unfamiliar power, and converting that understanding into a spell her allies can exploit.
Circle Magic and the Eternal Hole
Sienna created the Circle Magic Formula that organizes mana around the heart into stable Circles and allows modern wizards to classify, reproduce, and develop spells. She personally reached the Ninth Circle, then devised the Eternal Hole as an endpoint beyond that hierarchy. Within one great Circle, innumerable smaller Circles continually reproduce, intertwine, collapse, and amplify mana. The circulation lets Sienna cast by will alone, magnifies simple spells beyond conventional high-circle equivalents, and preserves internal reserves where ambient mana is unavailable. (Chapters 44–47, 53, and 368)
The Eternal Hole is powerful rather than indestructible. Damage sustained during Sienna's sealing makes prolonged operation unsafe, and its closed circulation remains a finite human answer to enemies whose existence exceeds normal magic. During metamorphosis, Sienna deliberately dismantles the structure she once regarded as complete. Her divine body replaces simulated infinity with magic described as genuinely infinite, allowing immediate casting and the comprehension of hostile spells such as Incarceration's chains. Even this state consumes attention and strength when she reproduces enormous powers or sustains battlefield-wide miracles. (Chapters 359–365, 414–420, 536–538, and 562)
Empress Rule and Absolute Decree
Empress Rule is Sienna's Signature and an expression of her authority over magic. It lets her dominate spells below the Ninth Circle, interfere with an opponent's construction, and redirect magical power within her reach. Conventional black magic initially falls partly outside that jurisdiction because its dark power obeys a different system. Once Absolute Decree matures, Sienna can extend the Signature over black magic as well, although she chooses to release that control during Balzac's last spell rather than reduce his final decision to something she has stolen. (Chapters 316, 351, 357, and 577–578)
Absolute Decree moves beyond control of an existing spell by using Sienna's will to establish its rule and outcome. It can require an attack to hit despite ordinary tracking limits, designate destruction as the conclusion of a technique, contain unstable soul force, and seal powers that resist conventional formulas. The ability grows more automatic as Sienna's soul power and divinity mature, but it is never simple omnipotence: her early form is incomplete, thick destructive power can resist it, Incarceration can alter the world's flow around it, and extreme applications still exhaust her. (Chapters 454, 467, 473, 499, 514–516, and 583–587)
Witch Craft, Mer, and magical analysis
Witch Craft is Sienna's final grimoire and a concentrated record of her lifetime of magic. Its three volumes preserve the Circle Magic Formula, the Eternal Hole, and the reasoning needed to understand them rather than merely copied spell lists. Mer is the artificial intelligence bound to that legacy: she maintains the grimoire, supplies calculations, and carries the appearance and personality of Sienna as a child, but is not a fragment of Sienna's soul. Together they allow future wizards—most importantly Eugene—to engage with Sienna's methods while she is missing. (Chapters 33 and 44–47)
Sienna's own analysis is broader than the system recorded in Witch Craft. She can observe an entire fleet, maintain concealment and barriers, distort and seal space, interfere with draconic magic, construct many spells simultaneously, and devise countermeasures while fighting. Against Raizakia she works through Eugene's position to attack the dragon internally and constrain his movement; against Noir and Incarceration she studies powers closer to divine laws than ordinary spells. Artifacts increase her available information and output, but the decisive step is consistently her ability to infer structure and turn it into a usable rule. (Chapters 105, 302–303, 359–370, 538, and 558–592)
Soul power, ancient magic, and divinity
By studying the memories in the former Bloody Mary, Sienna reconstructs ancient methods that combine mana and dark power. The resulting soul power is neither component in its original state; it is a new property with enough absolute force to make even low-level spells dangerous to transcendent enemies. Early production is volatile, and escaped power forces Sienna to invoke Absolute Decree to contain it. Repeated use can drain her to collapse, particularly when she channels attacks capable of contesting a Demon King rather than using the force for controlled research. (Chapters 505 and 514–521)
Vishur's guidance and Sienna's year-long metamorphosis elevate that research into divinity. As the Goddess of Magic, Sienna can blend soul power with Eugene's divine flames and the Saints' holy domain, receive strength and knowledge through Mary, and perform miracles through the World Tree. Her vines can envelop a city, restrain divine beings, carry perception into a nightmare, or form a bow against Destruction's heart. The World Tree and accumulated souls provide power beyond Sienna's personal mana, but her vessels and reserves can still be depleted by sustained combat. (Chapters 520–536, 558–562, 584–592, and 603–611)
Mental, soul, and Demoneye techniques
Sienna's magical defenses include resistance to dreams and direct manipulation of the soul. Within Noir's nightmare, she recognizes the wish being used against her and projects power toward Eugene with the Saints' help. When compulsory sleep threatens her in reality, she briefly separates soul and body so the dead cannot dream, then restores the connection. This evasion risks permanent death if repeated because each separation weakens the bond, making it a calculated emergency measure rather than immunity to mental attacks. (Chapters 549–562)
After Noir's death, Sienna can use the Demoneye of Fantasy through Mary. Its vast dark power supports illusions and expands the miracles she creates with Eugene, but operating it consumes significant mental strength and contributes to her collapse during the battle with Incarceration. Sienna therefore normally keeps the eye sealed and treats it as one component of a combined system rather than her personal unlimited reserve. The power is most effective when her soul force, divine authority, Eugene's sanctuary, and the Saints' prayers reinforce one another. (Chapters 572 and 584–592)

Relationships
- Eugene Lionheart: Sienna's quarrels with Hamel conceal love, trust, and grief strong enough that she preserves his soul for centuries. She recognizes Hamel within Eugene without denying the person he has become, and their old combat coordination matures into a divine partnership. He frees her from Raizakia, she repeatedly refuses victories that require his solitary death, and she accepts his proposal after the final war. (Chapters 1, 104–113, 287–315, 550–568, and 603–625)
- Vermouth Lionheart: Sienna respects Vermouth enough that even being attacked and robbed of Hamel's soul does not convince her his behavior was freely malicious. His secrecy wounds her and leaves centuries of unanswered suspicion, but she ultimately insists that he deserves rescue and happiness instead of another self-sacrifice. (Chapters 71, 312, 481, 599, and 603–604)
- Anise Slywood: Anise shares Sienna's grief over Hamel and helps write the tale that keeps his memory alive. After their reunion, their arguments retain the sharpness of the old party while their magic and prayer repeatedly combine to protect Eugene and reach him through powers neither could overcome alone. (Chapters 71, 204, 273, 306, and 581)
- Kristina Rogeris: Sienna treats Kristina as more than Anise's vessel and fights beside both Saints as a distinct partner. Kristina's blood and prayer help Sienna trace Eugene inside Noir's dream, and their holy domain later merges with Sienna's magic and Eugene's sanctuary against Incarceration. (Chapters 380–381, 504, 550–558, 581–612, and 622–625)
- Molon Ruhr: Sienna mocks Molon's simplicity with the familiarity of an old companion but trusts his strength absolutely. During the battle with Destruction, she carries him into the enemy's heart, protects him from fatal exposure, and turns the wound he creates into the target for her World Tree arrow. (Chapters 273, 404–405, 541, 581–592, and 603–611)
- Mer Merdein: Mer is Sienna's artificial daughter and childhood reflection, created to preserve Witch Craft and assist the person who would inherit it. Their reunion after Raizakia's death ends Mer's long wait, while Mer continues to serve as Sienna's family and magical assistant rather than merely an artifact interface. (Chapters 44–57, 117–124, 308–326, 424, and 615)
- Raizakia: Raizakia attacks Sienna while she is already mortally wounded, and his curse poisons and confines her for centuries. She protects the elves by imprisoning him between dimensions, then joins Eugene's assault from within the World Tree until the dragon is killed and her body is freed. (Chapters 235, 295–304, and 310)
- Balzac Ludbeth: Sienna begins with deep prejudice against black magic, but studying Mary and collaborating with Balzac's research forces her to revise that judgment. In their final confrontation, she permits him to complete his chosen spell, defeats it with soul power, and kills him while recognizing that his work helped make Absolute Decree possible. (Chapters 293, 443–444, 577–592, and 615)
- Noir Giabella: Noir uses Sienna's love for Hamel and desire for domestic peace as the center of a dream prison. Sienna rejects the counterfeit future, helps Eugene wake, and nearly destroys herself restraining Noir in reality; after Noir's death, her Demoneye becomes part of Sienna's power against Incarceration. (Chapters 96, 399, 550–568, 572, 585–592, and 620–625)
- Vishur Laviola: Vishur appears as the Sage who teaches Sienna that perfecting finite human magic cannot defeat Destruction. Sienna accepts the guidance without becoming a passive successor, using it to carry out a metamorphosis shaped by her own Absolute Decree, research, and ambitions. (Chapters 518–521 and 540)
- Signard: Signard is Sienna's adoptive elder brother and one of the personal ties preserved through her long absence. Their relationship becomes part of the peaceful family life available after the war, including the marriage discussions surrounding Eugene's proposal. (Chapters 99, 308, 324–325, 515, and 624–625)
Items
- Akasha: The Dragonheart staff supports Sienna's immense spell calculations and output. She leaves it with her research in Akron after completing the Eternal Hole, later reclaims it through Eugene, and uses it during major campaigns while damage to her original Circles makes external support especially valuable. (Chapters 45–47, 311, and 359–376)
- Witch Craft: Sienna's final grimoire preserves her Circle Magic Formula, the Eternal Hole, and Mer. It is both a scholarly legacy and a message to the future, guiding Eugene toward Sienna and allowing her methods to survive the centuries of her disappearance. (Chapters 33 and 44–53)
- Mary: The former Bloody Mary becomes Sienna's principal staff for researching ancient magic, generating soul power, containing Noir's Demoneye, and channeling the Sage and World Tree. Its stored memories expand her knowledge, but the staff and the power routed through it can be depleted during divine-scale combat. (Chapters 505, 514–521, 572–592, and 603–611)
- Soul-preserving necklace: Sienna seals Hamel's soul in this necklace after Incarceration returns his remains. She keeps it for centuries until Vermouth, acting under Destruction's influence, attacks her and takes it for the reincarnation plan. (Chapters 106, 217, and 305–313)
