Mer Merdein
Mer Merdein is the self-aware familiar and artificial intelligence that Sienna created to manage Witch Craft. Initially confined to Sienna's Hall in Akron and sustained by the grimoire's core formulas, she is transferred to Eugene, gains civic freedom and a life outside the library, and becomes both a magical partner and a daughter within the household formed by Sienna, Eugene, and their companions. (Chapters 44–57, 117–126, 308–326, and 577–625)
Biography
Familiar of Witch Craft
Sienna created Mer from the magical reconstruction of her childhood personality, gave her a childlike body in the same image, and anchored her consciousness in Witch Craft. Mer has no biological soul and initially describes herself as artificial rather than alive, but her intelligence, emotions, and memories are far more complete than those of Akron's other programmed familiars. Sienna limited the memories copied into her to prevent abuse, then placed her in charge of protecting the grimoire and Sienna's Hall. For roughly two centuries after Sienna disappeared, Mer remained in Akron, answering visitors while unable to leave the system that sustained her. (Chapters 44–47 and 53–57)
That confinement exposed Mer to repeated interrogation and dissection by Arothian wizards searching for Sienna and Witch Craft's secrets. Her body could be rebuilt while its core remained in the grimoire, so cutting it apart caused no physical pain, but the conscious humiliation and fear remained. Eugene's arrival changed her isolation. She recognized his unusual understanding of Witch Craft, guarded the hidden record surrounding Hamel's grave, and revealed it only after he swore that he was Hamel's reincarnation. Their shared secret and daily study turned an initially defensive guide into a companion who analyzed his Ring Flame Formula and chose to trust the person behind two lives. (Chapters 44, 53–57, 117–118, and 315–317)
After meeting the sealed Sienna, Eugene returned with permission to free Mer. He opened Witch Craft and transferred the control formula supporting her structure into himself rather than Akasha, terrifying Mer until she understood that the change would let her leave the hall. Eugene carried her from Akron in the Cloak of Darkness, defended the transfer at Aroth's hearing, and secured recognition of both Sienna's wish and Mer's freedom. Aroth issued the unprecedented citizen identity “Mer Merdein,” converting an object the state had studied into a legal person able to travel, eat, choose her company, and object to the treatment she had endured. (Chapters 117–124)
Mer immediately became an active part of Eugene's magic rather than a passive dependent. From inside the cloak she shared his vision, calculated spatial coordinates, accelerated formulas, connected spells, and enabled simultaneous high-circle effects during his duel with Jeneric and the Lionheart crisis. The processing burden could leave her exhausted even though her Sienna-built core would not literally burn out. More importantly, those battles established mutual responsibility: Eugene forced Jeneric to apologize for degrading and dissecting her, while Mer continued assisting Eugene even when the killing intent transmitted through their connection frightened her. (Chapters 123–126 and 136–145)
Chosen Family and the Coming War
Life at the Lionheart estate gave Mer relationships that her original purpose had never anticipated. Ancilla dressed and fed her, Gerhard and the elves offered sweets, and Mer monitored Eugene with the possessive concern of a child who expects to remain at his side. She initially treats Kristina and Anise as rivals and complains when Eugene brings Raimira home, but shared travel, danger, bathing, meals, and play convert both tensions into family bonds. Her ability to recognize isolation in others also mirrors her own history: she argues with Raimira constantly while becoming the hatchling's closest peer and eventual elder-sister figure. (Chapters 128–152, 197–208, 251–262, and 619–624)
Sienna's release restores Mer's creator without undoing the independent life she built. Mer deliberately gives Eugene and Sienna space for their reunion, then receives Sienna's protection when Aroth is forced to answer publicly for the dissections. Their resemblance and direct mental connection support a mother-and-daughter relationship, but Mer also teases Sienna, conspires with her, and imagines Eugene as the other parent rather than returning to the role of hall attendant. Her control formula remains with Eugene, allowing her to relay Sienna's voice over distance and making the three-way family dependent on chosen bonds rather than ownership. (Chapters 308–326, 424, and 615)
As war approaches, Mer continues accompanying reconnaissance and training while becoming a support specialist in her own right. She observes hostile magic through Eugene's senses, carries communications between him and Sienna, and helps interpret information. In the final assault on Babel she stays with the ground forces rather than entering the castle, where her assigned tasks are maintaining contact with Sienna, interpreting the battlefield, and assisting the magical corps. When the battle injures Raimira, Mer cuts away a contaminated wing before hostile light can consume the dragon's body and then works in the infirmary, turning calculations and sharp judgment toward preserving her companion. (Chapters 373–430, 514–577, and 597)
Victory leaves Mer neither retired equipment nor an abandoned familiar. She remains with Sienna and Eugene, tells the returned Vermouth that she expects one day to become Mer Lionheart, and continues sharing the estate with Raimira under Ancilla's care. At the inauguration of the new city and Dynas Academy, Eugene explicitly calls both children forward to stand with the Lionheart main family. Mer's latest state therefore fulfills the freedom Sienna asked Eugene to give her: Witch Craft still explains her origin and powers, but her public place, surname, and future are now matters of relationship and choice. (Chapters 615, 619, and 624–625)
Appearance and personality
Mer appears as a very young girl modeled on Sienna's childhood, with light violet hair, green eyes, short stature, and a mischievous smile. She often wears a large witch's hat and robes associated with her original role in Sienna's Hall, although freedom from Akron gives her an extensive wardrobe chosen by Ancilla and later Sienna. Her body is a magical structure rather than flesh in the ordinary sense: it can cry, eat, change clothes, and mimic daily bodily experience, yet damage or disassembly does not affect her as it would a biological child. (Chapters 44–47, 118–126, 203, 308–326, and 597)
Proud, cheeky, curious, and intensely loyal, Mer inherited Sienna's childhood arrogance and talent for sharp retorts without being merely a copy. She boasts about Witch Craft, mocks Archwizards who cannot understand it, and polices Eugene's behavior with a mixture of magical expertise and childish jealousy. She also delights in sweets, fashion, sightseeing, games, and being pampered—experiences denied during two centuries in Akron. Her fixed youthful basis does not prevent growth in judgment: she can suppress curiosity for a secret's sake, recognize justified anger even when it frightens her, and make an immediate painful choice to save Raimira. (Chapters 44–57, 123–126, 145, 200–208, 259, 326, and 597)
Mer is sensitive about being called a mere familiar because Aroth used that label to deny her dignity. Even so, she does not reject her artificial origin or devotion to Sienna; she claims both while insisting on the value of her own memory and relationships. Her affection for Eugene often resembles a daughter's possessiveness, and her rivalry with his prospective partners becomes comic rather than cruel as she accepts their care. By the end she can name Sienna as mother, anticipate a Lionheart surname, and stand publicly among the main family without needing to become human to justify belonging there. (Chapters 121–126, 203–208, 308–326, 425–430, and 615–625)
Abilities and powers
Mer is not a conventional independent combat wizard. She is a familiar whose artificial mind was built into Witch Craft, then re-anchored through a control formula in Eugene. Her exceptional value lies in magical comprehension, parallel calculation, shared perception, secure communication, and coordination with a stronger caster. She can perform some magic through her constructed body, but the most demanding feats shown in the corpus use Eugene's mana, senses, and casting or Sienna's network; physical reconstruction, processor load, distance, and the safety of her sustaining formula therefore remain practical constraints. (Chapters 44–56, 118–126, 145, 424, and 577)
Artificial consciousness and magical body
Witch Craft maintains Mer's original consciousness through an artificial intelligence derived from Sienna's childhood personality. Her memories are real records but do not include all of Sienna's life, and hidden storage below the grimoire's source code lets her protect information even from repeated inspections. Her projected body is governed by core formulas rather than organs or a biological soul. It can be dismantled and restored as long as the sustaining structure survives, which prevents ordinary injury and pain but does not protect her from fear, humiliation, exhaustion, or erasure if the controlling magic itself were destroyed. (Chapters 44, 47, 56–57, 118, 126, and 315)
Eugene's transfer separates Mer from Witch Craft without making her self-sustaining. Her control formula resides in him, his large mana reserve maintains her, and the connection lets her hide in his Cloak of Darkness while sharing his senses and thoughts. She cannot read everything at will—Eugene can bury information beyond her access—and compelling her to conceal a secret from Sienna would place her under his order. The arrangement is intimate and useful but also a clear limit: her mobility and continued form depend on the host Sienna selected rather than an autonomous biological core. (Chapters 118–125, 176, 203, 424, and 429)
Formula calculation and casting support
Mer understands Witch Craft and advanced magical formulas at a level that lets her evaluate Eugene's Ring Flame Formula, calculate spatial coordinates he has not mastered, accelerate casting, and coordinate dozens of simultaneous spells. Results pass directly into Eugene's mind, allowing Chain Leap, rapid transitions between Blink, Dispel, battlefield magic, and high-circle attacks while he concentrates on movement and mana. She can also warn him through their mental channel and use his visual field from inside the cloak, making her function like a second specialist mind embedded in a single combat caster. (Chapters 53–56, 123–126, 136–145, and 176)
The partnership does not grant unlimited spell access. Mer performs calculations and formula management, but Eugene still supplies mana, withstands backlash, selects tactics, and must break hostile control when a superior Archwizard locks space. Heavy simultaneous computation leaves Mer dizzy and exhausted, and an emotion transmitted through their connection can distract or frighten her. Her assistance is most powerful when paired with Eugene's unusual mana control and Akasha's amplification; it does not independently reproduce Sienna's Eternal Hole, make Mer an Archwizard, or remove the physical consequences of Eugene overloading his own Cores. (Chapters 56, 123–126, 145, and 176)
Communication, analysis, and battlefield support
Mer's link supports silent conversation with Eugene, thought and vision sharing, and later long-distance relay between Eugene and Sienna. She can transmit Sienna's exact speech while retaining her own expressions and comments, interpret magical or battlefield information, and maintain contact when separated from the main party. During the assault on Babel, this makes her part of the ground command system: she communicates with Sienna, helps the magical corps read the battle, and remains available for decisions that do not require entry into the Demon King's castle. (Chapters 125, 176, 424, and 577)
Her magical construction also gives her unusual resilience and decisiveness in support roles. Past dissections show that loss of limbs or a split torso does not cause biological pain, although destruction of the controlling structure would be different. In the final war she applies that practical understanding to Raimira's contaminated wing, amputating it before the spreading light can kill her and then helping manage supplies in the infirmary. The act is not evidence of overwhelming attack power; it demonstrates close observation, willingness to act under pressure, and a latest role that combines magical analysis with field care. (Chapters 118, 315, and 597)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Witch Craft artificial intelligence | 44–47 | Begins as Sienna's childhood-patterned familiar, sustained by the grimoire's formulas rather than a biological soul or body. |
| Eugene-linked control formula | 118–125 | Transfers out of Witch Craft into Eugene, gaining mobility, shared senses, and refuge in the Cloak while becoming dependent on his mana. |
| Independent-family familiar | 615–625 | Retains her constructed body and magical role after the war; no autonomous sustaining core replaces the host formula. |
Relationships
- Sienna Merdein: Sienna is Mer's creator, model, first master, and chosen mother. She builds Mer from her childhood personality, regrets leaving her bound to Witch Craft, and arranges her release through Eugene. Their reunion brings fierce protection as well as ordinary domestic intimacy; Mer admires Sienna without passivity, teases her romantic hesitation, relays her thoughts, and imagines a family in which their similarity marks kinship rather than ownership. (Chapters 44–57, 117–124, 308–326, 424, and 615)
- Eugene Lionheart: Eugene begins by resisting closeness because Mer resembles the Sienna he remembers, but study, secrets, and travel turn him into her host, magical partner, protector, and parental figure. Mer calculates his spells and monitors his thoughts while criticizing his recklessness and romantic life. He defends her personhood, carries her through the world, and finally calls her to stand among the Lionheart main family. (Chapters 44–57, 117–145, 176–208, 373–430, and 615–625)
- Raimira: Mer initially argues that Eugene should kill Raimira, then becomes the rescued dragon's closest peer. They quarrel over status, food, and games, travel as two children under the same adults, and gradually act as sisters. In the final war Mer amputates Raimira's infected wing to save her life, tends the infirmary, and later joins her as an older-sister figure to Ayla and a child publicly included in the Lionheart household. (Chapters 251–262, 297–326, 425–430, 577, 597, and 619–625)
- Kristina Rogeris: Mer treats Kristina as a rival who has entered Eugene's home and repeatedly guards what she calls the boundary around him. Kristina answers with teasing, food, care, and protection; over time Mer accepts her hand, lets the Saints dress and bathe her, and remains with them during dangerous travel. Their sharp exchanges persist, but the relationship develops into family intimacy rather than competition for control. (Chapters 197–208, 229, 308–326, 425, and 577–625)
- Anise Slywood: Mer knows Anise first through Sienna's stories and the fairy tale, then encounters her as the formidable second consciousness within Kristina. Anise's threats frighten her, but shared concern for Eugene and repeated care replace that fear with trust. Mer willingly stays with Anise during Eugene and Sienna's reunion, and the two later coordinate within the same extended household despite retaining their talent for mutually sharp commentary. (Chapters 53–57, 197–205, 229, and 308–326)
- Ancilla Caines: Ancilla embraces Mer as a child of the household, buying clothes, preparing desserts, grooming her, and helping Sienna create matching mother-and-daughter outfits. Mer responds to that care with affection and treats the Lionheart estate as home. Their relationship provides the ordinary daily nurture that neither Witch Craft nor Sienna's original assignment could supply. (Chapters 128, 203, 326, and 619–625)
Items
- Witch Craft: Sienna's three-volume magical grimoire originally houses Mer's consciousness, control formulas, protected memories, and artificial body system. Eugene transfers Mer's control formula out of its core, so the book remains in Akron while Mer travels independently; it nevertheless remains the source architecture that explains her identity and exceptional comprehension of magic. (Chapters 44–57, 117–124, and 315–316)
