Akasha

Akasha is a staff formed from a World Tree branch around the Dragonheart of the dragon also named Akasha. It was created for Sienna Merdein, accompanied her rise as the Wise Sienna, and later accepted Eugene Lionheart as its chosen successor. (Chapters 45, 71, 117–119, and 516)

History

A staff for young Sienna

The dragon Akasha willingly removed her own Dragonheart as she died. Surviving dragons blessed the heart, and the elves of Edsillon set it into a body made from a branch of the World Tree. The resulting staff was intended to help the young Sienna grow until she no longer needed its guidance, after which she was to pass it to another person in need. (Chapter 516)

Akasha recognized only Sienna, defeating other wizards' attempts to use it. She carried it from the elven forest as their representative and used it for most of her life, while its combination of a Dragonheart and World Tree material made its destruction a matter that could provoke the dragons. (Chapters 45 and 71)

Recognition of a successor

During the effort to reach the sealed Sienna, Akasha transferred its recognition to Eugene. Sienna explicitly entrusted both the staff and Mer to him, and Aroth later acknowledged him as its owner. Jeneric Osman attempted to challenge that claim but failed to make the staff accept him. (Chapters 117–119 and 123–124)

Eugene used Akasha as a computational and magical aid rather than merely as a weapon. Ariartelle engraved it with a Draconic tracking spell, and Mer helped use the staff's analysis to control increasingly large and complex techniques. Sienna could still wield Akasha after her return, including to inspect magical formulas and exercise enormous magical output, but later reaffirmed that Eugene was the successor she had chosen. Akasha remained intact through the late campaigns. Eugene relied on it less as his own abilities grew, yet the staff and Mer continued to fine-tune Prominence and other demanding magic. (Chapters 515–516)

Abilities and properties

• The Dragonheart supplies immense magical capacity, while the World Tree body provides a durable medium shaped for spellcasting. The heart came from a willing donor rather than a dragon slain for materials. (Chapters 45 and 516)
• Akasha synchronizes with its recognized owner's consciousness. It analyzes learned spells, optimizes their formulas, and improves the owner's understanding, but does not make every piece of magic instantly or perfectly comprehensible. (Chapter 122)
• The staff can lay out formulas for inspection and support calculations on a scale difficult for a single mind. Mer frequently acts as the auxiliary intelligence that turns this capability into precise control. (Chapters 316, 472, and 481)
• Ariartelle's added tracking spell can search for a target through a meaningful connection. Its usefulness is limited by difficult coordinates and variable dimensions rather than providing effortless location across every space. (Chapter 180)
• Recognition is selective. Other accomplished wizards could not simply seize its functions, while Sienna's deliberate transfer allowed Eugene to become its later owner. (Chapters 45, 117–119, and 123–124)
