Yuan Tuan

Yuan Tuan is a Qingsui Peak disciple who becomes its Foundation master and teaches Li Xizhi. Her care for successive Li cultivators contrasts with the family and sect pressures that eventually leave her trapped in the Eastern Sea.

Biography

Qingsui stewardship and the Eastern Sea tragedy

Tuan welcomes Chejing as her junior brother with a calming jade pendant, tends his wounds after sect bullying and arranges for Huyuan to escort him home during the tribute voyage. When her master is imprisoned and her fellow disciples are away, she supports Qingsui Peak alone. Her cultivation stalls while she concentrates on talismans and spirit plants, but eventual breakthroughs bring her to Foundation and improve the peak’s position. She visits the Li Family, recognizes Xizhi’s promise, accepts him as a disciple and gives Ximing her protective Azure Manifestation bead. (Chapters 22, 53–57 and 364–365)

As Xizhi’s teacher, she carefully watches sect politics and shields him from dangerous assumptions. Her Azure Crest Manifestation blessings help protect his relatives during the devil plague, while she endures Buzi’s scrutiny over the Yuan Family’s search for ancient scriptures. She obtains pure Dawn-Colored Qi for Xizhi despite obstacles at Xieqi Peak and offers to arrange a marriage outside her own clan. During the Eastern Fire expedition, she insists that valuable finds be handled according to sect rules, aware that the grand formations are watching. (Chapters 393–394, 427 and 453)

The Dragon Clan later traps her in a grotto heaven for more than ten years, using her Azure Manifestation cultivation in its plans. Chengdun is deceived into joining the attempted rescue, and Qinghong finally sees Tuan standing motionless before the Dragon Monarch as the enormous pearl is swallowed. Her feared death is subsequently confirmed when the sect reports that her soul lamp has gone out. Xizhi confronts Huyuan, while Xiao Yuansi mourns a junior sister whose disappearance was concealed from him and whom he could no longer protect. (Chapters 724 and 730)

Appearance and personality

Tuan is gentle and gracious, with long dark hair and softly spoken manners. Her warmth toward students coexists with sharp observation of sect politics and controlled composure under Buzi’s questioning. Memories of her kindness intensify the grief following her death. (Chapters 53, 393–394 and 730)

Abilities and cultivation

She is introduced at the third Qi layer and later attains Foundation after years sustaining Qingsui Peak. Azure Crest Manifestation can protect the mind and spirit, dispel disasters and bless others; she prays three times for Xizhi’s relatives during the devil plague. Her manifestations include white deer that carry her and dissolve into snow. These protections do not free her from the Dragon Clan’s captivity or prevent her death. Her work in talismans and spirit plants is substantial enough to delay her earlier realm advancement. (Chapters 22, 364–365, 393–394 and 724)
