Biography

A marriage chosen as an escape

Born to a concubine and raised apart from her father’s care, Guiluan fears being married to an older cultivator as a live-in son-in-law for her natal family. She treats the Li match as a chance to choose a better future: before the wedding, she budgets its expenses, pawns her own jade bracelet to cover a shortfall, and quietly protects her father from blame. On meeting Li Yuanjiao, she immediately asks whether he intends to seek the family headship and makes clear that she lacks support from her father but has brothers who will stand by her. The couple’s frankness gives their marriage a practical foundation, and she becomes a trusted partner in his decisions. (Chapters 282, 289–291)

Building the family’s foothold, then risking her breakthrough

When Li Yuanjiao takes over family affairs, Guiluan helps find a premium market for the family’s ebony ore, easing the strain of heavy tribute and cultivation costs. She joins him in moving the family to Mount Wutu and later helps defend its people; by then she is also raising their children and advising the Li women around her. She reaches the ninth layer of Qi Cultivation and studies talismans, but her Foundation Establishment attempt fails. Her vital strength declines in seclusion until she dies, leaving her daughter Li Yuexiang with a small wooden token bearing the words “I have been waiting.” (Chapters 297–298, 422–424, 446, 588, 652–653)

Appearance and personality

Guiluan is shown with delicate features and expressive phoenix eyes. She is observant, self-possessed, and financially shrewd: she can read what a marriage means to both families, plan for future obligations, and keep a shortfall from turning into a public grievance. (Chapters 282, 289, 291)

Abilities and cultivation

Guiluan cultivates to the ninth layer of Qi Cultivation and makes a Foundation Establishment attempt. She also studies talisman drawing and fights with a grade-three technique and a silk-shawl artifact during the defense at Mount Wutu. Her skill and preparation do not overcome the risks of advancement: the attempt fails, her life force ebbs, and she dies. (Chapters 422, 588, 652–653)

  • Li Yuanjiao is her husband and partner in family affairs. (Chapters 291, 297–298)

  • Li Qinghong is one of her Li relatives; Guiluan offers advice on cultivation and family concerns. (Chapter 446)

Items
