Biography

The overseer who chose to protect a recruit

Xanatus enters the story as the solemn overseer of Gustav's MBO entrance-test batch. His opening lesson—that operations rarely proceed as announced and that an officer must adapt to surprise—defines both the test he administers and his own later method of command. As chief supervisor, he observes candidates rather than merely scoring them, recognizes intelligent choices, and occupies an A-rank MBO designation: “Gradier” is his office, not his given name. His authority initially makes him an institutional gatekeeper between talented adolescents and the organization that intends to use them. (Chapters 164, 198, 200)

His relationship with Gustav Oslov becomes personal during the Caskia operation. Disguised as a prisoner on an observation mission recommended by Miss Aimee, Xanatus watches Gustav's fight and intervenes when stolen essence leaves the boy disintegrating. He gathers the enemy's scattered yellow matter, contains it in a blue circular barrier, compresses the material into a red point, and has Gustav consume it, restoring the missing essence. Satori infiltration and the Luchan command

During the assault on Yung Jo's facility, a bloodline disruptor forces Xanatus to operate without his innate powers. When the mission appears likely to fail, he is prepared to die activating the disruptor; the cost is made immediate when a subordinate takes a bullet during the breach. The hidden star and the restored universe

Xanatus survives the deity war but reaches the hidden star visibly worn down: his once-neat hair is disheveled, his uniform is torn, and grief makes him look abruptly older. He helps lift the injured Falco, mourns the people lost, and joins the remaining officers and refugees in the desperate effort to understand how the universe might be saved. When Gustav returns and defeats the deities, Xanatus's reaction is openly emotional: he joins the survivors around him and wipes his nose while they confirm that Gustav is truly alive. Appearance and personality

Xanatus is introduced as a dignified man in an orange, black-striped MBO uniform with long yellow hair reaching his lower back. Gustav Oslov

Xanatus rescues him in Caskia, hides evidence of his abnormal abilities, manages rather than blindly enforces rules around him, edits or suppresses dangerous records, argues against an order that could get him killed, and covertly enables the search for evidence that may clear him. Gustav reciprocates with unusual trust: he accepts Xanatus's mission authority, negotiates sensitive reporting with him, requests his support, and continues taking his calls after leaving ordinary MBO control. Miss Aimee
