Monica Jeffrey

Monica Jeffrey, known as the Sunset Witch, is a Union prodigy whose flame affinity, swordsmanship, and unusually early use of mana agglomeration make her one of humanity's strongest younger heroes. Ranked twenty-seventh when introduced, she combines a loud, irreverent personality with serious loyalty to her teachers, peers, and students. Her career links the Lock's first-year cohort to the Union's war against the Monolith and, later, to the Human-Demon Alliance.

Biography

Union prodigy and interest in the Lock's students

Five years after graduating from the Lock alongside Donna Longbern, Monica has joined the Union and risen far beyond the position her classmate chose as an instructor. She arrives after the Hollberg disaster as Hero Rank 27, suppresses the pressure clash between Donna and George, and interviews Kevin because the Union considers him an exceptional prospect. Kevin refuses her invitation, but his refusal does not end her interest in his development. (Chapters 72–73)

Monica later forces her way into the Lock as a guest lecturer, initially treating procedural training as an annoyance because of her public rank. Once she discovers the quality of Ren's Keiki Style, however, her curiosity becomes sustained instruction. She spars with Ren and Kevin, overwhelms their coordinated strongest attacks without serious difficulty, gives Ren the Quick-slash Style as a visual cover for his hidden art, and judges their growth partly as a reflection of her own competence as a teacher. The Monolith operation and a debt to Ren

The Monolith places its highest bounty on Monica because her projected rise to SS rank would materially strengthen humanity. At Issanor, Monica reunites with Douglas with the unrestrained affection of a former student, then immediately recognizes Ren beneath his altered appearance. She respects Douglas's request not to expose him, disguises her knowledge as teasing, and quietly thanks Ren for saving her at the Monolith. Later, when Donna becomes suspicious of the same disguised man, Monica vouches for him before Donna can press further, using her institutional standing to protect his anonymity without requiring him to reveal himself publicly. Her behavior during the reunion reveals the loyalties beneath her irreverence. Douglas remains the teacher whose judgment can stop her mid-charge, Donna remains the friend with whom she can argue without breaking trust, and Ren has changed from an interesting junior into someone to whom she owes her life. Monica's willingness to shield him from Union scrutiny is therefore not casual rule-breaking: it is a deliberate choice to place personal knowledge and earned trust above an institution that had already written him off once. Return home and the SS- breakthrough

Back in the human domain, Monica is welcomed into Ren's domestic circle rather than kept at the distance expected of a senior Union hero. She entertains Nola by levitating her around the Dover home and shares the family's relief at Ren's return. At age thirty-two Monica reaches SS- rank. The advance strengthens her connection to ambient mana and turns her previously imitated agglomeration into a cheaper, denser, and more stable technique. Her first instinct is to test the new output until Donna points out the crowd below, after which she apologizes and helps find a substitute for a mission she can no longer undertake. Alliance operations and the fall of the Monolith

The later ranking assembly treats Monica's SS- breakthrough as the standard against which Kevin's prospects are measured. Despite the prestige attached to that growth, she continues working in teams formed from her old academy circle. She accepts the Alliance summons, joins the concealed strike planned against the Monolith, and tolerates Donna and Douglas's familiar teasing before the mission. When the Monolith trap is sprung, Monica engages the SS-ranked elder held in reserve while Donna's group attacks the mana compressor. During the battles inside the Pillars, Monica helps hold back the main demon forces in Wrath alongside Donna and Douglas. Monica does not pretend her SS- rank can solve an opponent beyond her tier; she helps the group endure until Ren intervenes and immediately accepts his instruction to stabilize the spatial distortions left by the collapsing pocket world. In the final confrontation with Jezebeth, Monica's task is defensive rather than decisive. Amanda calls on her and every other capable fighter to erect barriers against the collision between powers far above the surrounding army. The order fits Monica's established strengths: tangible mana, flight, rapid positioning, and enough judgment to combine her barrier with other rankers rather than treating individual output as sufficient. Appearance and personality

Monica has bright dark-orange hair, clear blue eyes, and an unusually small frame, standing about 160 centimeters tall. Her youthful, innocent-looking beauty contrasts with Donna's mature allure and causes people unfamiliar with her to underestimate her age and authority. She is energetic, profane, boastful, intrusive, and easily bored by ceremony. Monica throws devices when a game interrupts her, bribes her way into teaching before completing the Lock's requirements, argues about her height, and openly calls stronger enemies old witches. Her strongest personal trait is loyalty expressed without institutional polish. Monica recruits talent for the Union, yet confronts its leadership over Ren, protects his identity, gives him damaging internal evidence, and remains beside former classmates and teachers in later wars. She is candid enough to criticize her employer and practical enough to continue serving humanity through it. That tension makes her neither an obedient functionary nor a purely independent hero. Powers and abilities

Monica is explicitly S+ rank during the Monolith operation and reaches SS- rank when the ambient mana density rises. The advance improves her mana pool, physical force, flight, perception, and control over environmental psyons. It does not make her inexhaustible: her battle with the Devlon brothers drains her within minutes, Mo Jiahao can overwhelm her group, and even her completed armor cracks under the prepared Monolith explosion. Flame psyons and sword combat

Monica's title comes from both her sunset-colored hair and her unusually high affinity with flame psyons. She can surround movement and sword attacks with orange energy, release beams that scorch their path, and casually break the combined attacks of much weaker students. Her swordsmanship is sufficient for Donna to defer to her as Ren's specialist instructor, and her combat style couples refined blade timing with overwhelming ranged output rather than relying on flame as an uncontrolled area effect. Her output has costs and artifact requirements. Repeated strongest techniques exhaust both mana and stamina, and an A-rank sword that amplifies flame control is nearing its tolerance limit while she approaches SS rank. Art detection and perception

Monica possesses a special sense that identifies the art a person practices. It allows her to assess Ren at Hollberg, recognize the familiar discipline beneath a changed or burned face, and pierce identity concealment that would deceive ordinary observers. The sense reads a practiced energy signature rather than supplying every fact about a target: at the Monolith she knows the rescuer feels familiar but needs time and context to connect that signal to someone believed dead. Flight, force control, and barriers

Monica can levitate herself, cross space at speeds that appear nearly instantaneous to weaker observers, and manipulate another person gently enough to fly Nola around a room. The same control becomes battlefield mobility and defensive force at higher output. Her agglomerated armor supplies a personal barrier, while the final battle shows her contributing to a larger combined shield. These applications scale with mana and require care: an SS-tier blast can crack her armor, and playful levitation is not evidence of unrestricted telekinesis over resistant peers. Monica is an effective sword instructor once she accepts the role seriously. She can identify what Ren needs to conceal, choose a related three-and-a-half-star manual, pressure-test coordinated students, and demonstrate the gap between technique knowledge and an S-rank body. In war she accepts target assignments, changes from assault to retreat when betrayal makes the mission untenable, preserves mana for portal activation, and yields impossible opponents to stronger allies.
