Douglas

Douglas R. Barker, usually called Douglas, is the elderly headmaster of the Lock and one of humanity's senior rankers. He combines institutional authority with unusually patient judgment, supporting Ren's cross-racial plans while remaining willing to confront other leaders when expediency threatens civilians.

Biography

Headmaster and mentor

Douglas is introduced watching the inter-academy tournament through a remote projection from a safe location. He recognizes the Keiki style in Ren Dover, remembers seeing its grandmaster decades earlier, and asks Donna Longbern to explain the promising students. Donna's deference establishes him as her mentor, while his transparent hands and limited remaining projection time show that his apparent physical presence is not always his actual body. His first response to Ren is therefore neither recruitment nor suspicion, but informed observation. (Chapter 238)

Henolur, Issanor, and the alliance assault

At Henolur, Douglas works beside Waylan Roshfield, carefully respecting dwarven command while offering human aid. When he detects Angelica, he stops Waylan from attacking long enough to inspect Ren's mana contract, verify its claims, and add a film that better conceals her leaking demonic energy. That choice converts a potentially fatal exposure into a usable alliance and demonstrates the trait that repeatedly distinguishes him: caution does not prevent him from changing his judgment when the evidence supports Ren. Douglas later commits himself to Ren's counterattack against Inferno. He helps conceal the portal setup, coordinates the arriving fighters of several races, and enters the duergar facility with the assault group once the passage opens. The portal depends on equipment, preparation, and mana containment rather than a casual personal teleport, and its use risks exposing the entire operation. His willingness to stake his standing on the plan helps turn Ren's intelligence into a formal interspecies offensive. (Chapters 343–362)

Return to the Lock and support for Ren

After Issanor, Douglas gives Ren public institutional support during the press conference even as Ren exposes the Union's willingness to sacrifice him. Their relationship survives that confrontation because Douglas is not one of the officials Ren accuses of arranging the betrayal. When Ren later asks for help with soul damage, Douglas admits he cannot cure it himself, directs him toward Octavious as the only likely expert, and honors a prior reward by allowing Ren to choose even an S-ranked skill from the Cube, while warning him to choose for need rather than prestige. Alliance politics and war

Douglas remains a moral counterweight during the formation of the human alliance. When Octavious reveals that an operation deliberately injured civilians to trigger contract damage against the Monolith, Douglas openly challenges him, rejects survival as sufficient justification, and warns that the political backlash could be catastrophic. He nevertheless joins the broader anti-Monolith campaign and later answers the call to fight demons in Immorra, showing that principled disagreement does not become withdrawal from collective defense. The Seven Pillars

In the final conflict, Douglas fights beside Donna and Monica Jeffrey, helping hold Marquis-class creatures away from the displaced population until Amanda reinforces them. After Ren destroys the Pillar world, Douglas immediately understands the need to stabilize or investigate the space distortions and moves with Donna and Monica without requiring an explanation. He survives the operation; the supplied epilogues do not provide a later personal scene or a formal retirement. (Chapters 820–825)

Appearance and personality

Douglas is an elderly man with a long white beard and an aged, tranquil voice. He frequently strokes his beard while thinking and favors calm smiles over visible intimidation, though his pressure and control are strong enough to silence dangerous situations. His hands become transparent when he operates through a remote projection, a state distinct from ordinary physical aging. (Chapters 238, 304, 545)

He is patient, paternal, and evidence-driven. Douglas can accept a demon ally after verifying the contract, back an unorthodox student when the plan is sound, and keep an expensive promise even when Ren chooses an S-rank reward. His kindness is not passivity: when civilians are used as instruments, his voice darkens and he strikes the table in anger. This balance between pragmatism and a firm ethical boundary defines both his mentorship and his public leadership. (Chapters 321–322, 546, 669)

Powers and abilities

Psyon control and concealment

Douglas displays fine control over environmental energy. A wave of his hand stills violent wind; a touch reheats tea; another gesture suppresses the demonic energy leaking from Angelica and wraps her in a protective film. He can detect traces that ordinary observers miss, but explicitly warns that the concealment is imperfect and that SS-ranked observers or attentive elves may still see through it. His skill is therefore precision and perception, not absolute invisibility. (Chapters 304, 321–322)

Portal operations and remote projection

Douglas is experienced with long-distance portal infrastructure. He uses a device that draws surrounding mana into a gateway, shields the activation residue from hostile detection, organizes mixed-race forces through the passage, and travels through established portal stations. These feats require coordinates, hardware, setup time, and containment; the corpus does not establish unrestricted innate portal creation. His remote projection likewise has a limited operating duration and depends on his actual body remaining in a safe location. (Chapters 238, 343–344, 361, 378, 460)

Institutional command and instruction

As headmaster, Douglas turns personal expertise into strategic capacity: he judges proposals, coordinates with foreign leaders, teaches Ren advanced psyon control alongside Waylan, opens the Lock's Cube as a reward, and deploys senior fighters. His authority has limits. He cannot dictate the Union's decisions alone, cannot personally cure Ren's soul, and remains one powerful participant among the alliance's strongest people rather than its final sovereign. Relationships

• Donna Longbern: Donna regards Douglas as a mentor and reports promising students to him. They later fight together in the final Pillar conflict (Chapters 238, 820–825).
• Waylan Roshfield: Waylan is Douglas's long-standing partner in Henolur and Issanor. They coordinate diplomacy, combat instruction, and the Inferno counterattack, while Douglas can restrain Waylan when immediate force would be premature (Chapters 304, 321–355).
• Ren Dover: Douglas progresses from observer to sponsor, verifying Ren's pact, backing his attack plan, helping him return home, and granting access to the Cube. His support does not erase the need to test Ren's claims or warn against careless choices (Chapters 238, 321–322, 343–460, 544–547).
• Monica Jeffrey: Monica is another senior human ally and former Lock student in Douglas's orbit. They oppose the Monolith and later fight together within the Seven Pillars (Chapters 674, 707–711, 820–825).
• Octavious Hall: Douglas cooperates with Octavious in human defense but directly contests his willingness to risk civilians, embodying a recurring ethical divide within the leadership (Chapters 486–487, 668–669).
