Tanabur

Tanabur is an Orc warlord whose mounted ferocity is matched by a fierce sense of pride. First encountered as one of Orobak's supporters in the reconstructed Orc Dominion, he survives his defeat, fights beside Barca, and later leads Warg cavalry for Heaven's Gate.

Biography

Awakening and Leaf Village

Tanabur initially supports Orobak and treats fellow warlord Baronar as a rival rather than a trusted comrade. After Lux's party incapacitates him with Barca's poison, Lux spares his life and secures both his cooperation and twenty-five Wargs. Tanabur then helps infiltrate Morgazar's camp and scouts Oreg's movements, shifting from an enemy chieftain's subordinate into a difficult but useful battlefield ally (Chapters 99, 105–107).

His loyalty expresses itself most clearly in combat. Tanabur saves Matty from an Orc Berserker by crashing into the attacker on his Warg, severing its arm, and decapitating it before throwing Matty clear. He later carries the injured Barca away from danger, yet his pride remains combustible: objecting to Orobak's trick-assisted death, he challenges Lux's side, breaks Pazuzu with Wild Charge, and is ultimately trapped in quicksand and rescued by his own men (Chapters 111, 113, 117–118).

Heaven’s Gate and the continental wars

The later Orc Dominion scenes are explicitly a Spirit World reconstruction rather than an exact record of history, but the living Tanabur remains one of Barca's senior commanders. He attends strategic meetings, takes watch rotations, and—after the army has killed thousands without stopping the enemy advance—pragmatically recommends retreat rather than sacrificing the entire force. This caution shows a more seasoned commander beneath his earlier appetite for direct challenges (Chapters 579, 595–600).

Tanabur follows Lady Avyanna's decision to enter Heaven's Gate and commits his Warg cavalry to the continental war. His riders use their mounts' leaping power to clear a defensive line and strike the soldiers behind it, turning mobility into shock assault. Although wounded in the ensuing campaign, he benefits from the guild's regenerative support and remains part of its fighting force through the recorded phase (Chapters 607, 609–610, 614).

Appearance and personality

Tanabur is presented as a large Orc Raider who fights from the back of a Warg and carries a heavy axe. His identity is inseparable from the cavalry unit he commands. He is proud, blunt, and brave enough to challenge opponents after seeing their stratagem defeat his former lord; his quicksand defeat also exposes how readily indignation can overtake judgment. Later councils reveal a more practical concern for preserving his troops (Chapters 111, 117–118, 600).

Warg-cavalry abilities

Tanabur combines Orc strength with mounted momentum. Wild Charge drives both rider and Warg into a target with enough force to break Pazuzu's defense, while his axe can dismember and decapitate an Orc Berserker in rapid succession. As a commander, he uses Wargs for scouting, infiltration, rescue, and massed leaps over enemy formations, not merely straightforward charges (Chapters 106–107, 111, 117, 609).

His methods have clear limits. Poison incapacitates him before Lux's alliance is secured, and the linear commitment of a charge can be redirected into prepared terrain: Lux's side exploits his momentum and pride to pull him into quicksand. Even at his later Argonaut-ranked Alpha level, sustained warfare wounds him, making guild healing and coordinated support important to his continued service (Chapters 105, 118, 597, 610).

Relationships

• Barca: Tanabur begins as a rival warlord but ultimately recognizes Barca's leadership, rescues him when injured, and serves in his later campaigns (Chapters 99, 113, 595).
• Lux: Lux's decision to spare him converts a dangerous opponent into an ally; Tanabur later follows Lux's wider coalition through Heaven's Gate (Chapters 105, 607).
• Orobak: Tanabur is initially Orobak's supporter and is angry that the chieftain dies through a trap rather than the direct martial contest Tanabur considers proper (Chapters 99, 117).
• Baronar: Their early rivalry complicates Orc cooperation, though both later operate among Barca's warlords (Chapters 99, 579).
