Matty
Matty is a Dwarf Weaponmaster, Colette’s childhood friend, and one of Lux’s earliest companions in Elysium. His obvious jealousy of Lux earns him the recurring nickname “Simp Matty,” but the joke masks a consistent protective instinct. He fights at Colette’s side through their beginner adventures, joins the defense against the final invasion, and eventually proposes to her.
Biography
Awakening and Leaf Village
Matty first treats Lux as a rival for Colette’s attention, yet his actions repeatedly put the party ahead of that irritation. When Undead threaten them, he raises his short sword and declares that an attacker will reach Colette only over his body. As a vanguard of the Golden Slayers, he faces the Dark Draugr despite his fear, helps hunt the Carbuncle, questions how dungeon rewards will be divided so Colette’s kindness is not exploited, and enters Orc Dominion after judging which difficulty the party can survive. He develops from a prickly companion into one of the friends Lux trusts in dangerous formations. (Chapters 21, 36–40, 55, 76–96, 104)
The dungeon campaigns test both Matty’s courage and judgment. He fights with paired short swords to cripple stronger enemies, protects the party’s mages and healer when direct attacks on a boss would be fatal, and accepts retreat when an Alpha Monster’s power exceeds their formation. Rewards from Orc Dominion bring him to Apostle Grade and give him Mythical shortswords, while the graduation fight demonstrates his expert parrying. When the Lycan project later overwhelms the group, he continues beside Colette even as their armor and healing cease to offset the rank gap. His loyalty remains emotional, but it is increasingly expressed through disciplined frontline work rather than jealousy alone. (Chapters 110–118, 125–139, 181–191, 216)
Open Heaven’s Gate
In the final war, Matty initially does not intend to fight at the front, but changes course when Colette flies a Gyrocopter beside Aina. He stays near her craft, warns her not to push too deeply into the Abyssal formation, and accepts the danger because he refuses to let her fight alone. After the war, fear that Colette might eventually become one of Lux’s lovers finally pushes him past years of hesitation. He proposes, she accepts, and the long-running comic rivalry resolves into an explicit commitment to the person he has protected since childhood. (Chapters 1203, 1206, 1229)
Appearance and personality
Matty is a young Dwarf who usually appears in fighter’s armor with one or two short swords. His expressions make his feelings easy to read: he glares when Colette embraces Lux, smirks when he can tease the Half-Elf, and turns serious when evaluating a dangerous dungeon. The corpus emphasizes his compact Dwarven build and equipment more than hair or eye color. (Chapters 21, 36, 76, 96, 110)
Jealous, blunt, and proud, Matty often competes with Lux through sarcastic remarks. He is also cautious about unfair reward divisions and accurate about the danger posed by higher dungeon modes. Most importantly, his attachment to Colette consistently produces action: he runs beside her into combat, guards her allies, joins a war he hoped to avoid, and finally admits his feelings. His development lies less in losing jealousy than in turning it into an honest promise instead of endless rivalry. (Chapters 21, 65–96, 104, 181, 1206, 1229)
Weaponmaster abilities
Dual-short-sword combat and parrying
Matty’s rare Weaponmaster class gives him broad familiarity with weapons, though he specializes on-page in short swords and eventually a paired Mythical set. He fights in the vanguard, slashes legs to reduce enemy mobility, and is identified as an expert parrier whose counterattacks become more dangerous with stronger blades and armor. Rank disparity remains a hard limit: his swords barely cut Orc Berserkers, and he must avoid bosses capable of killing him in one blow. His defense relies on timing, equipment, and teammates rather than supernatural invulnerability. (Chapters 36–38, 78, 110–112, 118, 135–138, 181)
Formation fighting and Gyrocopter operation
Matty works best as part of a balanced formation. He and Colette hold the front while mages and Helen operate behind them; he redirects enemies, protects vulnerable allies, and retreats when ordered so stronger defenders can take aggro. In the final war he operates a Gyrocopter and stays close enough to warn and support Colette, but the craft’s missiles and mobility do not make him capable of confronting the strongest Abyssal beings directly. (Chapters 36–38, 110–112, 124–139, 1206)
Relationships
- Colette: Colette is Matty’s childhood friend, longtime love, frontline partner, and eventual fiancée. Protecting her is his most consistent motive. (Chapters 21, 65–104, 181, 1206, 1229)
- Lux: Matty begins as Lux’s jealous critic but becomes a dependable early companion. Their teasing rivalry coexists with real trust in battle. (Chapters 21–41, 76–139, 216)
- Helen, Andy, and Axel: They form the ranged and support half of Matty and Colette’s adventuring party, whose survival depends on the vanguard holding enemies away from them. (Chapters 36–38, 110–139, 181)
