Avernus

Avernus is an Ancient Dracolich created when Lux animates an Ancient Dragon corpse with a matching Calamity-ranked core. Arrogant, relentless, and tactically experienced, he becomes one of the Covenant’s strongest aerial combatants and commands an undead dragon legion in the final war.

Biography

The Divine Army reckoning

Lux chooses the one-percent Dracolich outcome for the Ancient Dragon corpse, then raises its success rate to certainty with a core that once belonged to another Dracolich. The newly revived creature accepts the name Avernus but meets its master with an openly proud stare. Sealed at Empyrean rank despite having been a Demigod, he immediately serves as a devastating field commander, protects claimed monster cores from King Louis, and draws on memories of the earlier Abyssal invasion when fighting the Divine Army’s Saints. Avernus’s confidence is not empty bravado. Against a stronger Calamity-ranked Roc, he refuses Lux’s offer of help, accepts catastrophic damage to his skeletal body, and uses Cethus’s Gravity Domain to force the enemy down before handing it to Blackfire. He can also take a Demi-Dragon form to intimidate Rankers, yet his conduct around Dilan’s daughters shows discernment: he watches to see whether Lux will preserve his morality rather than urging indiscriminate killing. The rescue from the Abyss and the final war

After Lux becomes a Saint, Avernus reaches Demigod rank and joins the defense of Agartha. During Lux and James’s ascent through the Abyss, he willingly becomes a diversion, shifting from a humanoid form into his full Dracolich body and provoking several Demigods while his master escapes. He later carries Lux into the final battle, leads an Undead Dragon Legion, and contributes the strong will that Lux draws through his final union with his followers. Appearance and personality

Avernus first appears as a fifteen-meter Dracolich resembling a vastly stronger zombie dragon, with an eerie blue glow in his eyes and a malicious aura. His later forms include a demi-human body that appears from red flames, a Demi-Dragon shape, and the full skeletal dragon with tattered wings. He is arrogant, teasing, combative, and almost impossible to discourage; shattered limbs produce a triumphant sneer rather than surrender, while his loyalty to Lux is expressed through willing exposure to overwhelming danger. Dragon body, breath, and forms

Avernus flies, fights with claws, tail, and crushing body weight, and breathes destructive fire over large areas. His resistances, regeneration, and undead construction let him continue after extensive skeletal damage, but they do not make him invulnerable: the Roc breaks his chest, limbs, and wing, and coordinated support is required to secure victory. His alternate humanoid and Demi-Dragon forms allow him to operate indoors or project pressure without using his full size. (Chapters 916, 938, 960, 980, 1039, 1159)

Hell Bringer and undead command

Hell Bringer opens a blazing gate and summons ten thousand Hell Hounds, ten thousand Hell Knights, and ten thousand Hell Revenants. Herald of Death raises allied creatures’ health by 300 percent and attack by 100 percent, while Animate Undead converts slain beasts into attackers and Summon Undead Legion provides further mass support. These armies amplify Avernus’s reach, but hostile control, battlefield terrain, and enemies above his current sealed rank remain practical limits. (Chapters 916, 938, 960)

Relationships

• Lux: Lux creates and names Avernus, whose rank grows with his master. Avernus answers dangerous assignments with confidence and also quietly judges whether Lux remains morally worthy. (Chapters 916, 1022, 1137–1159)
• Cethus: Cethus’s Gravity Domain enables Avernus to ground the Roc; Avernus treats the Dragon Born as a useful, if nervous, younger ally. (Chapter 960)
