Hua Li

Hua Li, publicly known as Poseidon, is the heir and later patriarch of the Poseidon Group, a celebrated performer, a water-controlling Adept, and one of the Four Divine Monarchs. His closest bond is with Lan Jue, whom he treats as a brother and repeatedly chooses to protect even when family duty, political prudence, and his own survival point elsewhere.

Biography

A brother's return to Skyfire

Hua Li comes to Skyfire while Lan Jue is still recovering from his battle with Michael. Although his fame forces him to travel in masks and altered hair, his purpose is personal rather than promotional: he uses the restorative aspect of his water Discipline to push pooled blood from Lan Jue's body and form protective water membranes around his injured organs. He stays as a bodyguard, supports Lan Jue's new work at the National Eastern University, and agrees—after protesting the ambush—to serve as the daily sparring partner for Zeus' Amazons. Their teasing and competitiveness disguise a long-established trust; Xiuxiu recalls that Hua Li had once suffered a serious injury protecting Lan Jue during their earlier years as Divine Monarchs. (Chapters 104–114)

The same period exposes the strain between Hua Li's private loyalties and his public career. He enjoys the freedom of anonymously following Lan Jue around campus, but Mo Xiao and Gobi Entertainment are preparing the release of Poseidon: Sounds of Nature and will not allow their star to disappear indefinitely. He nevertheless postpones professional obligations when Lan Jue needs him, helps train Tang Xiao and Jin Tao, and stages an elaborate underwater concert at the NEU. His warmth onstage is genuine, but the concert also shows how thoroughly Poseidon has become a public role managed around him: even his wish for rest, food, or anonymity becomes a negotiation with Mo Xiao. When the Taihua catastrophe cuts off contact with Lan Jue, Hua Li immediately orders all available intelligence gathered and demands that Poseidon 1 be dispatched regardless of cost. He and Chu Cheng travel to the ruined planet, accept the Wine Master's assurance that Lan Jue's secret treatment must not be interrupted, and carry their injured friend back to Skyfire aboard the Group ship. Hua Li's relief becomes a rare serious rebuke: he had believed Lan Jue dead and asks him to curb his habit of treating his own life as expendable. The rescue confirms that Hua Li's wealth and family machinery are not merely status symbols; when his brother is endangered, he turns them into logistical power without hesitation. (Chapters 147–152)

The Divine Monarchs return to battle

Hua Li resumes fighting beside Lan Jue, Lan Qing, and Chu Cheng through real and simulated combat. In a DreamNet clash among the Monarchs, his Triton mecha emphasizes battlefield control: it probes through deceptive images, contains faster opponents, and uses Parting the Waters to alter the position of a fight rather than simply trading blows. He later provides the Poseidon Group's punishing training program for Lan Jue's NEU students and helps supervise their physical and mecha development. The program's severity is deliberate—completion is designed to produce ace pilots—and Hua Li uses both medical water energy and disciplined pressure to keep the students progressing rather than merely exhausting them. (Chapters 220–247 and 263–269)

The Star Alliance exhibition brings the old group together before a public audience. Hua Li is alert to the danger as soon as the Knave and other veteran opponents appear, but he still enters with the confidence of a man fighting among people whose habits he knows intimately. He identifies the Demon Dragon of Ice and Fire as his preferred fifth Divine Monarch, coordinates with his teammates instead of chasing individual glory, and accepts a control-and-defense role in Triton. The Monarchs win two rounds through mutual understanding and complementary tactics before forfeiting the deciding fifth fight, reinforcing Hua Li's development from a powerful solo water Adept into a combatant whose greatest value is often deciding where and how everyone else can fight. (Chapters 270–291)

At the Great Adept Tournament, Mo Xiao prevents Hua Li from competing because anything short of an assured victory could damage Poseidon's reputation. He accepts that constraint and contributes in the role left open to him, performing at the opening ceremony and later using his celebrity platform to identify Lan Jue as both the tournament champion and the hero of Taihua. The revelation removes the North's freedom to quietly detain or pressure Lan Jue: harming a publicly recognized hero would carry political costs across human space. Hua Li's intervention therefore turns the same fame that restricts him into a shield for his friend. (Chapters 388–394 and 478–487)

Inheritance, leadership, and an alliance with the East

As the alien threat grows, Hua Li becomes less able to live as an entertainer who happens to be an Adept. Poseidon Group uses its wealth to buy Tears of Neptune before governments recognize their strategic importance, supports Skyfire Avenue's preparations, and resists Western pressure. Hua Li inherits his family's ancestral power and ascends to Paragon, an acceleration Lan Jue believes required a considerable sacrifice from Hua Li's father. Once his Domain stabilizes, he publicly reveals his new rank at the animula auction, checks Western intimidation with the authority of both a Paragon and humanity's richest organization, and spends ships and strategic resources with unnerving calm. (Chapters 494–522 and 637–655)

His ascent also fixes him in a role he had not freely chosen. Hua Li becomes the new leader of Poseidon Group, founds the compact but highly integrated Poseidon Corps, and assumes responsibility for a bastion, two fleets, and a population that must survive even if the Alliances fail. He tells his fellow Monarchs that the aliens forced him to break through earlier than he wished and that his family has not produced a Reflection of Heaven and Earth for more than a century. This makes his Paragon power immense but not limitless, and his strategic choices become a balance between fighting for humanity and preserving a route of escape for his people. (Chapters 653–695 and 717–718)

Hua Li chooses the East because he distrusts the Western Alliance's fractured command and plans for retreat. He proposes bringing the Group's bastion, fleets, resources, and eventual military support into an Eastern alliance while asking for a secure planetary home in return. Friendship influences the choice—he openly names Lan Qing and Lan Jue as part of the reason—but he negotiates as a patriarch, not as a carefree companion, insisting that his family must have a future if the war is lost. At the same gathering he announces his marriage to Mo Xiao. He does not pretend romantic joy: he regards her as an exceptional partner and feels obligated to give her the position for which the family raised her, while privately admitting that he loves someone else. (Chapters 717–719)

Poseidon Group enters the war

The Western collapse turns Hua Li's contingency planning into open commitment. Poseidon Group removes its bastion from the West, endorses the Eastern rescue expedition when other powers hesitate, and joins the advance toward Europa. Hua Li is anxious about Lan Jue taking needless risks, yet refuses to remain behind when Lan Jue prepares to infiltrate dangerous territory; when family arrangements are raised as an objection, Hua Li states that the Group will be fine and that he is going. He helps plan rescue operations, places Poseidon's military resources beside Middle Heaven and Tyrannosaurus, and uses his authority to shift the Group from a wealthy semi-independent power into a fighting member of the human coalition. (Chapters 735–769)

This is not an uncomplicated conversion into selfless heroism. Hua Li continues to protect his family's option to survive and opposes plans that appear to waste Adepts or soldiers without sufficient cause. His objection to Lan Qing's dangerous deployment plan is unusually forceful because he sees the catastrophic human cost if the exposed troops are annihilated. Once committed, however, he coordinates Poseidon in the three-bastion formation, supports the planetary rescues, and helps focus public hope alongside Lan Qing and Kang Hui. His leadership is cautious about lives but not timid about battle. (Chapters 812–828)

When the Paragons begin to buckle under alien pressure, Lan Qing and Mo Xiao both order Hua Li to remain aboard Poseidon because he is the Group's commander and symbol. Hua Li rejects the logic that his organization cannot survive without him. He leaves Mo Xiao in command, turns to water to escape her grasp, and joins Chu Cheng in the Paragon battle because Lan Jue and the others cannot hold much longer. The decision crystallizes the conflict that has followed him throughout the story: preserving Poseidon Group is his office, but abandoning his brother is a choice he cannot make. (Chapters 829–831)

The last defense and the Heart of Poseidon

Hua Li continues to contribute as both commander and Paragon during the final campaign. He supplies the hoarded Tears of Neptune needed for exuvium work, returns from gathering them to help trap the Violet Princess's fleeing vital crystal, and then reinforces the Paragons holding an Infinite-level enemy. During the assault on Monarch, blue and gold power from his trident restrains an avatar long enough for allied attacks to land. These actions show his characteristic combat function at its highest scale: he controls and delays stronger foes so that coordinated human power can finish them. (Chapters 863–872 and 888–894)

The Violet Prince eventually breaks toward the four bearers forming the Banishing Strategy. Lan Jue cannot defend himself without abandoning the formation, so Hua Li crosses the attack's path and takes the blow. His water shield breaks, his Core shatters, and he appears certain to die. He tells Lan Jue that he could have fled with Poseidon Group and did not remain for abstract humanity or family duty—he stayed for Lan Jue. Believing this his last chance, he also confesses his lifelong love and accepts moral responsibility for Hera's murder. Mo Xiao then reveals the fuller truth: she and Xiuxiu arranged the killing without Hua Li's participation, but Hua Li discovered the crime and kept silent. Hua Li does not accept innocence on that technical ground; he believes his concealed love and failure to make matters right implicated him. (Chapters 896–897)

Mo Xiao refuses to survive him and dies at his side, after which both are taken away by Hua Li's father and are publicly treated as dead. Hua Li's sacrifice leaves Lan Jue to care for the couple's child and appears to end Poseidon's line of personal involvement in the war. The epilogue overturns that apparent ending: the Heart of Poseidon restores Hua Li, although it does not restore Mo Xiao. He chooses not to reveal that he survived, surrenders his public life and leadership, and remains beneath Planet Poseidon's waters beside Mo Xiao's preserved body. This final withdrawal is not a return to his youthful evasions; after years in which duty and fame decided nearly every part of his life, he deliberately gives the remainder to the woman whose devotion he understood too late. Appearance and personality

Hua Li is repeatedly described as extraordinarily beautiful, with refined, somewhat androgynous features, a flawless complexion, long eyelashes, and striking blue hair and eyes. His looks are central to his Poseidon persona and make anonymity difficult; on Skyfire he uses masks, sunglasses, a black wig, and altered eye color to move through public places. After his Paragon breakthrough his face remains unchanged, but the formerly vibrant air around him becomes deeper and more mysterious, which his friends read as a more mature and masculine presence. (Chapters 104–111, 404, and 717)

In ordinary company he is playful, vain, competitive, and quick with a sarcastic answer. Around Lan Jue and Chu Cheng, the public star gives way to a friend who likes food, practical jokes, gossip, and challenges whose stakes are deliberately ridiculous. His vanity is not merely an affectation—he genuinely enjoys admiration—but neither does it prevent empathy. He is attentive to injury, understands Lan Jue's moods without explanation, and repeatedly turns serious the moment another person's life is endangered. (Chapters 105–111, 129, and 152–166)

Leadership brings forward traits that the entertainer's image obscures. Hua Li thinks in resources, evacuation windows, institutional loyalties, and the survival of people under his command. He can oppose allies when he believes their plan spends lives recklessly, and he refuses to present self-sacrifice as his natural desire; even at the point of death, he says that he cherishes living. His courage lies precisely in choosing danger despite that attachment to life. His deepest flaw is secrecy: he hides his love for Lan Jue, his knowledge surrounding Hera's death, and much of his unhappiness with Mo Xiao until those silences can no longer be repaired. Disciplines and abilities

Hua Li is a water-element Adept whose techniques favor defense, control, redirection, healing, and area dominance. He is introduced at ninth level, sixth rank, later inherits the Poseidon bloodline's ancestral authority, and reaches the Realm of Protogenia. Water-rich environments amplify him, while sufficiently powerful lightning, superior protogenia control, or weapons capable of dispersing protogenia can exhaust or break through his defenses. (Chapters 108, 113–114, 142, 161, and 653–695)

Water Discipline and restorative control

Hua Li can turn his body into water or a water-like image, disappear into a larger body of controlled water, form nonconductive shields, create waves that separate allies from enemies, and bind targets inside bubbles. His control is fine enough to create temporary crystal-blue drinking glasses and broad enough to generate an oceanic battlefield around himself. At ninth rank his water and mental control work together, but the text explicitly notes that he is not a psychic; his resistance to mental attack comes from cultivated command rather than a separate psychokinetic Discipline. (Chapters 113–114, 160, and 717)

The gentler form of the Discipline accelerates recovery. Hua Li uses manipulated water to remove pooled blood, protect organs with membranes, cleanse exhausted bodies, reduce swelling, and sustain trainees through otherwise damaging exercises. This is support rather than instant resurrection: he works in repeated treatment sessions, and his protection can keep an injured person stable without eliminating the need for rest or other healers. His healing influence becomes a critical complement to Lan Jue's harsher training methods. (Chapters 108, 118, 122–123, 161, and 242–247)

Brine Mires and Poseidon's Mark

Brine Mires manifests as multiple cobalt vortices. Each eddy can swallow or redirect an incoming attack; gathered around Hua Li they function as mobile armor, and merged together they form a tidal vortex that conceals his position and withstands repeated blows. From within that field he can project the regal oceanic figure associated with Poseidon's Mark, cancel a major energy discharge, expand the surrounding tide to scatter several opponents, and isolate a psychic target in water where her mental attacks lose effectiveness. Fire, concentrated energy, and sustained multi-directional pressure still force him to spend Discipline, and prolonged defense can exhaust him. (Chapters 113–114 and 160–161)

Poseidon bloodline, Divine Rite, and Domain

The Poseidon family transmits an ancestral power that has produced a Paragon in every generation. Hua Li knows the path from birth, but inheritance does not remove its costs: his accelerated ascension is associated with sacrifice by his father, and Hua Li states that the bloodline has not produced a Reflection of Heaven and Earth for more than a century. As a new Paragon he controls the sea's inherent protogenia, turns the ground around him into a rippling water-world, and can become a blue stream of light across space. (Chapters 653, 695, and 717–721)

Through Divine Rite, he invokes the accumulated image of former Poseidons and absorbs the oceans' force, becoming one with marine protogenia for a further rise in power. He explicitly says this amplification carries a cost, but the corpus does not define that cost more precisely. In a representative duel, it lets him meet Lan Jue's Seven-Star Hammer with a tsunami of blue and gold energy; nevertheless, Captus and All-Heaven Lightning disperse his protogenia, forcing him to spend his full strength merely to defend. His latest demonstrated Paragon abilities include casting blue-gold orbs that slow a powerful avatar and creating a net strong enough to arrest the Violet Princess's fleeing core. Mecha piloting and strategic command

Hua Li is an expert mecha pilot whose signature machine is Triton. Triton's probe, shields, trident, and Parting the Waters technique extend his Discipline's control-oriented style to mecha warfare. Rather than relying on direct contests of speed, he searches through false targets, limits an opponent's lines of movement, and creates openings for allied attacks. The Star Alliance fight and Divine Monarch training matches show that this style is most effective when paired with teammates who can exploit the positions he creates. (Chapters 222–224 and 274–281)

As Poseidon Group patriarch he also commands fleets and the Poseidon-class bastion. He helps plan operations with Lan Qing and Kang Hui, recognizes when a Paragon battle is beginning to collapse, and entrusts Mo Xiao with the ship when he must fight personally. The bastion's Soft Water bombs, deep-blue secondary arrays, and transforming Trident Mode are engineered assets rather than innate abilities, but Hua Li's resources and decisions place them in the coalition's hands. Relationships

• Lan Jue: Hua Li's closest friend and sworn brother. He heals, rescues, politically protects, and ultimately takes a fatal-seeming blow for Lan Jue. Hua Li's unreturned romantic love for him also drives years of silence and guilt surrounding Hera's death.
• Mo Xiao: His agent, political partner, eventual wife, and mother of his child. Hua Li values her ability and loyalty but does not initially return her romantic love. Her confession at the final battle clears him of directly arranging Hera's murder while exposing the destructive consequences of their mutual secrecy.
• Chu Cheng: A fellow Divine Monarch and longtime friend. Their banter is competitive and often juvenile, but they train, plan, and enter the Paragon battlefield together, functioning as fire-and-water complements.
• Lan Qing: The senior Divine Monarch whom Hua Li treats as an elder brother and military leader. Hua Li trusts Lan Qing enough to propose Poseidon Group's alliance with the East, though he openly opposes him when soldiers' lives appear to be spent too freely.
• Xiuxiu: Lan Jue's longtime attendant and one of the women involved in Hera's murder. Hua Li knows her as both an old ally and the Asura Blade-Maiden, and his final revelations parallel the guilt she carries.
• Zhou Qianlin: Lan Jue's partner and Hera's sister. Hua Li helps protect the final Banishing Strategy she performs and confesses the concealed history of Hera's death in her presence.
