Ray
Ray is an Awakened scout whose Aspect first makes his presence difficult to notice and later lets him disappear from sight. Initially valued for avoidance rather than direct lethality, he survives the Domain War, receives Shadow Clan combat training, and develops into an ambush specialist capable of threatening stronger opponents. (Chapters 1780, 1783, 1844, and 2420–2423)
Biography
Scout of the Godgrave survey
Ray served as the reconnaissance specialist of Tamar's small survey team. His ability to conceal his presence and turn invisible let him inspect ruins and route the group around abominations, reducing a task that might require a dozen Awakened to three. He, Tamar, and Fleur had first reached Godgrave as Sleepers and survived because Ray's scouting brought them to the Lord of Shadows, an experience he later retold with elaborate voice control and theatrical exaggeration. (Chapters 1780, 1783, and 1785)
His powers did not remove physical danger. Ray remained corporeal while unseen, could be obstructed by rubble or struck by indiscriminate attacks, and depended on Tamar when avoidance failed and Fleur when the cohort was hurt. That balance carried the three through a collapsing canyon and into the construction camp just before war replaced exploration with frontline service. (Chapters 1783 and 1786–1787)
Domain War and loyalty to his cohort
Ray joined Seishan's Seventh Legion with Tamar, Fleur, and Rain. He fought beside Tamar at the front, protected Fleur when enemy soldiers reached the healers, and endured the repeated offensives that prevented their planned transfer away from the battlefield. The war forced a scout once described as unexceptional in direct combat to act under constant close-range pressure without abandoning the companions who made his Aspect useful. (Chapters 1844, 1915, 1995–1996, and 2197)
After a Great creature nearly killed Ray and Fleur, Nephis restored them in Aiko's cottage. Both nevertheless chose to rejoin Rain and Tamar, accepting renewed danger rather than leave their cohort unsupported. In the aftermath, Ray formally became the Shadow Clan's foremost stealth specialist, while Fleur remained in the Eastern Quadrant to heal civilians. (Chapters 2249–2250 and 2274)
Shadow Clan infiltrator
During a covert bank operation, Ray posed as an ordinary hostage and quietly disabled guards before disappearing to seize the grid control room. His frustration at being assigned a support task contrasts with the discipline with which he completed it, while his concern for Fleur shows that mission separation remained a personal pressure. When combat began, he attacked from concealment with a hidden blade and nearly killed an Ascended opponent in one strike, demonstrating how training had turned subtlety into offensive power. (Chapters 2415, 2420, and 2423)
Ray later scouted another Shadow Clan assault and then led Tamar's cohort through the Hollows toward a Seed. He remained invisible ahead of the group as they prepared to challenge the Second Nightmare; its result, and therefore whether he becomes Ascended, lies beyond the supplied corpus. (Chapters 2742 and 2749)
Appearance and personality
Ray is a young man whose ordinary appearance is useful to his work; during the bank infiltration, enemies accept him as a mundane hostage until bodies begin falling around him. In clan service he wears black armor marked with a serpent and uses a concealed blade. The corpus supplies no stable hair, eye, or facial description. (Chapters 2274, 2415, and 2420–2423)
He is adventurous, loyal, and dramatically expressive. Ray turns an account of mortal danger into theater, complains when covert assignments deny him excitement, and still repeatedly chooses to return to battle for his friends. His worry over Fleur is consistent but does not make him controlling: he trusts her training and the allies beside her when their mission separates them. (Chapters 1785, 2197, 2249–2250, and 2420)
Abilities and Aspect
Unnoticeable presence
Ray's Dormant Aspect Ability does not make him literally invisible. Instead, it makes his presence unusually subtle, causing people and creatures to pay little attention to him even when he is in view. This is ideal for scouting, infiltration, and approaching a distracted target, but it does not erase the evidence of his actions: observers can notice collapsing bodies or other disturbances and infer that an unseen assailant is present. (Chapters 1780, 1783, and 2420)
The effect also leaves Ray physically present. Terrain can impede him, broad attacks can hit him, and dangerous creatures remain lethal if he fails to avoid them. His field methods therefore combine concealment with distraction, prior study of a site, and allies capable of handling open battle. (Chapters 1783, 1786–1787, and 2420)
Invisibility and assassination
Ray's Awakened Ability allows him to disappear from sight. The corpus does not provide its formal name, essence consumption, maximum duration, or whether specialized senses can penetrate it. In practice he uses it to scout ahead, move through secured spaces, and attack from a target's blind side. (Chapters 1780, 2415, 2420, and 2749)
Shadow Clan training develops these powers into an assassination style. Ray strikes with a hidden weapon and is described as exceptionally lethal from the shadows, able to bring down enemies more powerful than himself. That advantage is not absolute: an Ascended target's defensive Aspect prevents Ray's surprise attack from becoming a one-hit kill, after which stronger combatants must finish the confrontation. (Chapter 2423)
Relationships
Fleur
Fleur is Ray's girlfriend, healer, and companion from their Sleeper expedition onward. He instinctively moves her away from a breached front and dislikes being separated from her on covert missions, but recognizes that she received the same combat training and can defend herself. Their decision to return to the war after being healed shows that loyalty to the wider cohort is shared rather than one-sided. (Chapters 1785, 1996, 2249–2250, 2274, and 2420)
Tamar and Rain
Tamar supplies the direct combat strength Ray's early Aspect lacks, while his scouting lets her avoid needless fights. Rain joins this established balance as a concealed source of additional power, later becoming an open clan comrade whom Ray supports in war and covert operations. He follows Tamar's assembled cohort into the Second Nightmare with both women, preserving the group created during the Godgrave survey. (Chapters 1780–1787, 1844, 2249–2250, 2742, and 2749)
Items
Ray wears black Shadow Clan armor bearing a serpent emblem and uses a concealed blade, described during the bank mission as a hidden weapon. The corpus does not assign either item a stable name, enchantment list, or individual custody history. (Chapters 2274, 2420, and 2423)
