Crowley

Crowley Corvus, also rendered Crawley, is a bird-type Altered, former Altered Fighting Academy teacher, and one of the Howlers' principal instructors and ranged combatants. He begins as the handler for NIRV's dangerous “special lessons,” but chooses a student's safety over his employer's authority when Gary is pushed beyond the agreed conditions. Losing his academy career brings him to Slough, where a job initially framed as ordinary teaching develops into long-term responsibility for the gang's Altereds, civilians, and battlefield formations.

Biography

NIRV's special lessons and a choice to protect Gary

Crowley introduces himself at the AFA as an eccentric black-clad teacher responsible for selected students' special lessons. Participants sign lifelong NIRV contracts and fight live beasts in teams, with Crowley supervising, reviewing performance, and remaining close enough to intervene. He is not the architect of the program: NIRV chooses the beasts and conditions, while Crowley tries to keep a deliberately dangerous course survivable. (Chapters 428–438)

The division becomes decisive when NIRV orders Gary Dem to face an unusually powerful beast alone despite Crowley and the professors objecting. Crowley warns Gary that refusal remains possible and promises to intervene if necessary. After the fight, a confrontation with NIRV employee James pushes Crowley to strike the sponsor rather than let its treatment of Gary continue. The AFA cannot protect his position from NIRV's influence, so he is dismissed and then blacklisted by academies and ordinary training employers. Before leaving, he asks the remaining AFA staff to protect Gary, accepting the loss of his own career without blaming the student. (Chapters 599–608)

A new teaching role becomes allegiance to Slough

Kai contacts Crowley when the blacklist leaves him without work and offers AFA-level pay, accommodation, and a teaching position in Slough. Crowley initially suspects a scam and does not realize that the black-and-gold organization employing him is a gang. His first general class draws hundreds of Howlers, and Kai then reveals the “special” class: Crowley is expected to train the group's Altereds as well as ordinary members. He stays because the facilities and students give him the teaching life NIRV tried to remove, gradually accepting the Howlers as more than an employer. (Chapters 604–608)

That instruction has strategic consequences. Crowley trains Marie, Austin, and later groups of Altereds in controlled transformation, self-defense, and coordinated combat. He lives in the same secured apartment building as Amy Dem, White, and later Gary, placing his protective role close to Gary's family. He is not immediately an official gang member, but by the Phoenix attack he voluntarily joins Slough's defense because the civilians and students behind his line are people he has taught for more than a year. From instructor to frontline commander

During the Phoenix war, Crowley uses flight and feather attacks against Glutton while Kai attacks from the ground. He spends roughly half his power trying to contain the fire-based Altered, whose heat turns even Crowley's hardened feathers to ash. Their complementary speed and improvisation create openings, but Greed ambushes Crowley in the air, drives flaming swords through his abdomen, and leaves him near death. Kai extracts him instead of continuing the fight, and Crowley eventually recovers. The experience changes his training priorities: he develops new techniques and prepares as a combatant rather than assuming technical skill and classroom experience are enough for war. Crowley becomes a recognized Howlers core member and takes on protective assignments, including flying watch over Xin Clove. During Lupus's full-moon invasion he commands a mixed Altered team whose layered roles let it outperform ordinary outposts. When Ylva empowers the attacking werewolves, Crowley shifts between close combat and aerial support, then orders an organized retreat once the crowded interior prevents safe ranged attacks. His decision preserves part of his force but leaves him badly wounded, with claws and projected nails tearing his wings. Even so, he returns to the air for the final defensive line and attacks Lupus alongside other bird Altereds until the Alpha blasts him into a building. (Chapters 1155–1202 and 1404–1506)

Reconnaissance and the last Glutton war

Crowley remains in Slough while Gary, Kai, and Lupus are absent in the other world. His brief clash with the exhausted returning group reflects the Howlers' fractured caution rather than a lasting split, and he is present when the core reunites. During the nationwide Glutton crisis, he patrols Howlers territory, sends an emergency signal when a horde enters Cipen Park, and joins Xin's war-room group as local reports converge. For the attack on Tower Land, Crowley rides above the vehicle convoy with other ranged specialists. He reacts first to Gluttons leaping from rooftops, sweeping razor feathers through their paths and knocking attackers out of the air before they reach the vehicles. The corpus does not isolate his actions after the convoy enters the mass battle, but he survives the final conflict and remains alive when the crisis ends. (Chapters 1820–1825)

Appearance and personality

Crowley is thirty-five when he leaves the AFA. In ordinary form he has onyx hair styled upward like a feather, a neatly groomed beard, and a round face. His early teaching outfit is deliberately theatrical: black coat and boots, black gloves, red accents, a feathered staff, a golden bird necklace, and a cape he flaps like wings. His transformed states add dark wings, clawed or taloned limbs, and large quantities of black feathers. (Chapters 428–429 and 604–606)

He is eccentric, fond of rhyming when in a good mood, and deeply identified with teaching. The theatrical manner can make him look unserious, but he rejects NIRV when student welfare is compromised, continues supporting former pupils after dismissal, and reorganizes a losing battlefield instead of preserving his pride. His move from teacher to warrior does not erase that protective instinct; command, training, and extraction remain as important to him as personal offense. Powers and abilities

Bird-type Altered transformation

Crowley is a bird-type Altered, though the corpus does not identify the serum's species, purchase, or original acquisition. Transformation produces wings capable of sustained flight, enhanced talons or claws, and improved speed, strength, durability, and senses. He can launch rapidly, attack from above, carry momentum into kicks, sever metal fixtures with a claw, and use his wings to block side attacks or strike as blunt surfaces. Partial transformation allows smaller wings and aerial maneuvering without always presenting his largest combat silhouette. (Chapters 428–438, 850–855, and 1404–1506)

Flight is both his greatest positioning advantage and a vulnerable dependency. An aerial ambush by Greed prevents Crowley from evading flaming swords, while later claw wounds and embedded nails shred his wings enough that the Howlers choose other bird Altereds for scouting. He can force himself back into the air while injured, but his endurance and control decline, and opponents with ranged attacks or overwhelming shockwaves can knock him down. Feathers, projectiles, and shaped blades

Crowley hardens black feathers into razor projectiles and can launch them singly, in barrages, or in broad storms. He uses the same material at close range by compressing feathers around his arms into two massive blades, allowing him to parry claws, stab through werewolves, and combine a diving charge with both points. His later technique creates dark blade-like energy or feather projectiles from above, while spinning currents widen the area he can cover. These variants show clear growth after the Phoenix ambush: he progresses from thrown feathers and opportunistic kicks to integrated aerial, melee, and area-support forms. The feathers are unusually hard but not indestructible. Glutton's heat incinerates them on contact, Ylva-enhanced werewolves resist or suffer only shallow cuts, and Lupus disperses a combined feather storm with the shockwave from one punch. Crowley's own energy is finite—he reports spending half of it before Glutton fully commits to the fight—and wide barrages create friendly-fire problems in crowded interiors. His latest use against Glutton Werewolves therefore emphasizes interception and route protection rather than an ability to erase a massed supernatural force alone. Instruction, tactics, and command

Crowley has AFA-level experience teaching Altered transformation, self-defense, and team combat. In Slough he transfers those methods to fighters with very different abilities, producing formations that layer defenders, ranged specialists, and control effects rather than simply charging. On the battlefield he surveys from above, identifies weakened targets, changes from melee to support when enemy strength rises, and calls a planned retreat when his team can no longer fight safely. His judgment is not infallible. He overcommits power against Glutton before seeing the full transformation and fails to notice Greed's aerial approach. The near-fatal consequence becomes the pressure behind his later development, making his full-moon command more cautious and adaptable than his earlier duel. (Chapters 854–855 and 1404–1506)

• Gary Dem: Crowley supervises Gary's special lessons, loses his AFA position after defending him from NIRV, and later accepts the Slough job Gary helped arrange. Their bond shifts from teacher and student to fellow defenders of the Howlers. (Chapters 428–438, 599–608, and 676–1506)
• Kai: Kai recruits Crowley, provides the resources that restore his teaching career, and reveals the need to train the Howlers' Altereds. Their partnership becomes direct in the Phoenix war, where Kai's ground speed and Crowley's flight briefly counter Glutton before the ambush. (Chapters 604–608 and 850–855)
• Amy Dem and White: Crowley lives near both women and encounters them in his first Slough class. Amy initially misreads his staring as predatory, but he becomes part of the security network around their building and Gary's family. (Chapters 604–676)
