Sty

Sty is the Altered son of Scatterbugs leader Slith and an early antagonist at the AFA entry facility. He uses his family's economic power and his own high rank to humiliate weaker candidates, particularly Numba, but his confidence collapses after Gary Dem defeats him. The death of his father then strips away the position on which much of his cruelty depended.

Biography

Rank, family leverage, and Numba's humiliation

Sty enters the facility as its active top fighter before arranging nominal losses that place Apollo and the other elite candidates above him. His strength is only part of his authority: as Slith's son, he can threaten business consequences for Numba's family and force Numba into serving him. Sty makes the coercion deliberately degrading, culminating in an attempt to force Numba to eat vomited worms from the floor. Gary intervenes because Numba cannot resist without endangering his family, smashing the worm bowl into Sty's face and accepting the official duel that follows. (Chapters 374–384)

Sty relies on erratic flight and speed, but Gary's howl compels him into a direct charge. Gary catches him in midair, drives claws into his shoulders, and bites across his shoulder and chest, leaving him unconscious and displaced from rank four. The defeat frightens Sty badly enough that his hands shake when Gary later approaches, yet his first response is not remorse: he deliberately lets lower-ranked students beat him so he can remain at the facility and continue targeting Numba instead of advancing. His spite turns a path to the AFA into self-imposed stagnation. (Chapters 384–388)

Loss of the Scatterbugs and survival at the academy

When Slith is killed and the Scatterbugs lose Notsburg, the family power behind Sty disappears. He becomes dazed and grief-stricken rather than confrontational, and Apollo reports that his own family has taken Sty in. Sty continues the NIRV beast training given to promising candidates and nearly dies during one of its dangerous exercises, but survives. The last direct evidence therefore leaves him alive, with neither his former rank nor his father's organization; the corpus does not show whether that loss produces lasting moral change. Appearance and personality

Sty is a teenage academy candidate whose transformation produces fly-like eyes and wings. He is initially arrogant, vindictive, and acutely conscious of status. He enjoys forcing a target who cannot safely retaliate to abase himself, and after losing, values revenge over his own advancement. His grief after Slith's death reveals how much of that confidence rested on family protection, but the text does not establish a full reformation. (Chapters 374–388 and 517–521)

Powers and abilities

Fly-type Altered form

Sty is a manufactured Fly Altered, although the corpus does not identify when he received the serum or the precise source beast. Partial transformation sprouts insect wings and altered eyes. His main application is high-speed, irregular flight: he changes direction rapidly to make his approach difficult to predict, then accelerates into a close-range attack. His active climb to the facility's top rank shows that the style is highly effective against ordinary candidates. (Chapters 374–384)

The form's central weakness is forced commitment. Gary's Magnetic Howl overrides Sty's evasive pattern and draws him straight into reach, where Gary's superior strength lets him stop the charge, pin the shoulders, and finish the fight with claws and a bite. Sty heals substantially under facility treatment but remains bandaged the next day. No ranged technique, evolved form, or progression beyond the entry facility is demonstrated. (Chapters 384–386)

Relationships

• Slith: Sty's father and the source of the family leverage he uses over other candidates. Slith's death leaves him grieving and removes the organization that insulated him from consequences. (Chapters 374–388 and 517–521)
• Numba: Sty coerces Numba through threats to his family's business and turns that leverage into public humiliation. His decision to delay advancement solely to keep tormenting Numba shows that the conflict becomes personal rather than strategic. (Chapters 374–388)
• Gary Dem: Gary challenges the abuse Sty believes his rank protects, defeats him decisively, and leaves him frightened even during a non-hostile approach. (Chapters 383–386)
