Roselle Gustav

Roselle Gustav is the name taken by Huang Tao after he awakens in a young Intis nobleman. Drawing on memories of the pre-Epoch world, he accelerates industrialization, overthrows the Sauron dynasty, governs first as consul, and crowns himself emperor. His diaries and Cards of Blasphemy become a second legacy beside his laws and inventions. After corruption from the Mother Goddess of Depravity ruins his attempt to use the Black Emperor's resurrection to purify himself, he remains suspended in a secret mausoleum until his daughter Bernadette and several divine powers enable one last resurrection and sacrifice.

Biography

Transmigration and Imperial Ascent

Huang Tao awakens as Roselle Gustav on February 15, 1143. He initially thinks like a stranded modern man: he misses his parents and former home, treats local conventions with irreverence, and searches for an advantage that can reproduce the success stories he remembers. A hunting trip exposes him to the supernatural world, after which he selects the Savant pathway because its emphasis on knowledge and technical ability suits both his education and his plan to transform society. That choice ties his personal advancement to invention from the beginning rather than making industrialization a separate political project. (Chapters 65 and 359–360)

Roselle turns remembered principles into practical machines, including a usable steam engine, while recognizing that an invention without patronage can be seized or suppressed. He therefore gathers political and institutional power alongside technical fame. His work improves sailing, manufacturing, and communications; he also introduces or popularizes many cultural forms whose original sources are unknown to the people around him. The corpus does not treat all of these borrowings as original genius, but it does show that converting fragmentary memories into technology that functions under this world's materials, economy, and mysticism requires real engineering, organization, and persistence. He helps overthrow the Sauron dynasty and becomes the first consul of the new Intis Republic. During nineteen years as consul, he promulgates a Civil Code, protects trade, encourages invention, drives the Industrial Revolution, and wins wars that expand Intis influence. He also reconciles with the Church of the Eternal Blazing Sun while his earlier relationship with the Church of Steam and Machinery deteriorates. At the end of 1192 he replaces the republic with an empire and assumes the title Caesar, turning laws, customs, architecture, and public recognition into the order required by his new political position. The same rise exposes Roselle's contradictions. He liberates productive forces and changes the lives of ordinary people, yet also wages colonial wars, concentrates power, pursues numerous affairs, and sometimes treats the world as a stage built for his ambitions. He eventually recognizes that industry and urban misery can create fertile conditions for evil gods rather than guaranteeing progress. His empire is therefore both a civilizational achievement and the institutional expression of his vanity, impatience, and need to secure enough authority to survive the supernatural struggle above human politics. The Diaries and Cards of Blasphemy

Roselle keeps a private diary in simplified Chinese, using the language as his last direct tether to Earth. Early entries preserve homesickness, jokes, technical ideas, political calculations, pathway research, and behavior he would rather his family never read. In his later years he begins consciously writing for a possible future transmigrator, even though he cannot know which Earth language that person will understand. For Klein Moretti, the recovered pages become a progressive education in pathways, hidden organizations, apotheosis, and the dangers Roselle discovered too late. (Chapters 359, 866, and 1308)

His investigations bring him into the Twilight Hermit Order, whose members possess the second Blasphemy Slate. From it he learns the names, formulas, and rituals of all twenty-two pathways, as well as the occupied positions and dangerous relations among their higher Sequences. The knowledge lets him recognize that merely climbing one pathway is not enough: neighboring pathways, Uniquenesses, Sequence 1 characteristics, and existing gods determine whether a route to divinity remains open. He records warnings about the Spectator pathway and the hidden manipulation surrounding the trends of an era, although memory gaps later reveal how incomplete his protection against Adam was. As a Knowledge Emperor, Roselle can give power to abstract knowledge. He uses that authority to create twenty-two Cards of Blasphemy, encoding each pathway's sequence names, formulas, and rituals in a form that attracts corresponding characteristics while resisting divination and prophecy. Bernadette's name activates at least some cards, making his beloved daughter part of their design. Only after Klein reaches his mausoleum does Roselle realize that he created the cards while already corrupted; he urgently warns Klein not to gather all twenty-two and to be particularly wary of the Mother card. Later appearances confirm that genuine cards remain potent sources of pathway knowledge, but his warning prevents their anti-divination from being mistaken for proof that every hidden influence was excluded. Corruption, Isolation, and Later Rescue

Roselle reaches Sequence 1 Knowledge Emperor but finds the Savant and neighboring Mystery Pryer routes blocked at the summit. During his explorations, events around the primitive island, Grimm, and Mr. Door gradually guide him toward the moon. Seeing Earth from above finally confirms that this world is the transformed Earth he once knew, but the journey also exposes him to the Mother Goddess of Depravity. The corruption suppresses his ability to recognize its source and makes him increasingly extreme, while intermittent periods of clarity leave him afraid to record the full truth. Bernadette sees the behavioral change and his seemingly irrational decision to become emperor, rejects what he is becoming, and leaves without knowing that an Outer Deity is influencing him. (Chapters 743, 1307, and 1309)

Roselle switches from Knowledge Emperor to the non-neighboring Black Emperor pathway. He believes the pathway's special resurrection can solve two problems at once: attaining Sequence 0 would give him a god's capacity to protect people during the apocalypse, and being killed after apotheosis should allow only the pure Black Emperor Uniqueness and three Sequence 1 characteristics to return, shedding his former pathway characteristics and corruption. He uses the order, laws, architecture, and recognition established through the Intis Empire to complete the ritual. The plan succeeds far enough for him to become a true Black Emperor, but the Great Old One's corruption revives with him. Rather than allow the Mother Goddess of Depravity to be born through his body, he stops the resurrection and remains neither fully alive nor dead inside his final mausoleum. (Chapters 1307 and 2296)

Bernadette eventually finds him. At their first reunion he resists the corruption long enough to explain the danger, orders her to seal him, and then drives her away so that she cannot be used as a path out of the mausoleum. Klein reinforces Pale Death's seal with Sefirah Castle, allowing Roselle to sleep while leaving open the possibility that a future Great Old One can cleanse him. Alone with Klein, Roselle acknowledges his mistakes, asks that he be erased if saving him proves impossible, and entrusts Bernadette to his fellow Earthling. His last clear conversation combines strategic warnings with domestic regret: wife and sons, the daughter he still calls his little princess, and the ordinary Earth life he can never recover have become more important to him than the game-like ambitions of his youth. Years later Bernadette tries to balance his original corruption with the compatible corruption of the Uncertain Mist. Her gray transaction with Perle expands into Project Vortex, and Roselle awakens enough to recognize that the ritual is endangering far more than him. He reassures Bernadette rather than condemning her violation of her own principles, confines her in the mausoleum for her safety, and takes responsibility for the consequences. Once the added corruptions allow his Black Emperor body to revive in the astral world, he Distorts the faith flowing to the Uncertain Mist, destroys the Brokers, and cooperates with Amon and Adam's larger design. Using the Magic Wishing Lamp, Roselle binds the weakened Genie to the Uncertain Mist through their shared origin, then Distorts which is the main body and which is the appendage. That equivalence lets Amon and Adam strike the distant Outer Deity by striking its sealed, weaker counterpart. Roselle refuses to release his hold and accepts the same attack, telling Bernadette to enjoy the world for him before his divine body disintegrates. The sacrifice leaves the Uncertain Mist unable to interfere for decades and preserves Roselle's resurrection mechanism: if no new Black Emperor arises and his social order or mausoleum survives, he can return in the future. By the apocalypse he has not personally returned; Bernadette relinquishes his Uniqueness for the defense of the world only after learning that his established rules can still support a later, though potentially diminished, resurrection. Appearance and personality

Roselle is remembered as a handsome man with long chestnut hair, deep blue eyes, and a broad, commanding presence. His imperial representations favor black armor, a luxurious cape, and a crown set with dark gemstones. In the mausoleum his incomplete state appears as a black, nearly illusory figure split by blood-red cracks and eyes; the unstable openings externalize the corruption that repeatedly regenerates within him. When he temporarily revives as the Black Emperor, the armor, cape, and crown reform as his body expands at the edge of the astral world. (Chapters 1307, 2296, and 2307)

He is inventive, charismatic, ambitious, irreverent, and exceptionally confident. Those qualities let him turn incomplete memories into institutions and persuade a country to follow him, but his confidence initially resembles belief in a game with a reload function: he overlooks quiet dangers, assumes purification has solved problems, and treats relationships and sexual conquest too casually. Corruption worsens his extremes, yet the corpus does not attribute all of his flaws to it. In the mausoleum he explicitly distinguishes the good he accomplished from the harm caused by vanity, desire, and careless choices. (Chapters 1307–1308 and 2301)

His strongest durable attachment is to family, especially Bernadette. Fatherhood first gives him substantial belonging in the new world; he teaches her words, knowledge, games, songs, and stories remembered from Earth, and gives her the Chinese character for “home” as a protective symbol. Even when corrupted, he arranges warnings and cards around her name. His later humor often masks pain, but his final sacrifices show genuine moral development: he refuses to let an Outer Deity use his resurrection, accepts permanent erasure as a possible necessity, and later gives up a restored divine body to remove one danger from humanity's apocalypse. Pathways and abilities

Roselle begins on the Savant pathway, reaches Sequence 1 Knowledge Emperor after switching into the neighboring Mystery Pryer side at high Sequence, and later forcefully switches to the non-neighboring Lawyer pathway to become the Black Emperor. His abilities therefore combine technical knowledge, information authority, and the distortion of order. The pathway switch is not a clean accumulation of every power he ever possessed: his planned death was specifically meant to purge the earlier characteristics, and his later resurrected form is identified as the true Black Emperor.

Savant foundations and invention

The Savant pathway enhances memory, comprehension, learning, craftsmanship, and the ability to analyze and reproduce technology. Roselle's pre-Epoch education gives these abilities unusually fertile material. He does not merely repeat finished blueprints; he translates principles into machines that local materials and manufacturing can support, improves ships and weapons, and organizes inventors and industry around them. This technical foundation is why he selects the pathway and why the God of Craftsmanship can use the changing civilization around Roselle to update “His” own image into the God of Steam and Machinery. At higher Sequences, this pathway grants mastery over machinery and increasingly abstract aspects of knowledge. Roselle's diaries show him moving beyond construction into the study of pathways, civilizations, the cosmos, and divine rituals. However, knowledge is also a vector for corruption: some cosmic truths cannot safely be learned below the required level, the Hidden Sage can force information into Mystery Pryers, and even a Knowledge Emperor can have memories removed or altered by a superior Spectator authority. Roselle's accumulation of knowledge expands his options without making his judgment or information infallible. (Chapters 715, 1036, and 1307)

Knowledge Emperor

As a Knowledge Emperor, Roselle possesses authority over knowledge as both information and power. He can imbue abstract knowledge with supernatural effects, which is the basis of the Cards of Blasphemy: formulas become active objects with convergence toward their corresponding characteristics, while the cards gain strong anti-divination and anti-prophecy. This is more than recording text on a magical medium; the knowledge itself is made capable of acting. The lasting limitation is provenance—if Roselle's mind or circumstances are already corrupted, giving knowledge power can preserve the hidden influence as well as the intended formula. (Chapters 1291 and 1307)

The pathway's angelic state can reduce a person to complex information, manipulate that information, and reconstruct a body. Later Sages demonstrate the related ability to extract information, isolate it, or change how it is organized, and Roselle's mirrored counterpart uses the same domain to influence paintings and reorganize an information-based creature. These later demonstrations clarify the kind of authority Roselle once held, but the corpus gives fewer direct battles from his Knowledge Emperor period than it does examples of his creations. His signature application remains converting a complete system of pathway knowledge into portable, concealable artifacts whose effects survive his death. (Chapters 1309, 2443, and 2455)

Black Emperor

The Black Emperor pathway governs disorder, distortion, exploitation of rules, and the sovereign order established by the user. Roselle can Distort distances so that an unreachable object falls into his hand, alter the relation between inside and outside, make an approaching effect move in the wrong direction, and change the main-body/appendage relation between himself and the Genie. Such effects do not simply break rules; they force a plausible relation or process to follow a warped interpretation. Stronger authorities, insufficient connections, and Roselle's own corruption can still oppose or destabilize the result. (Chapters 1307, 2307, and 2315)

At divine level, his Distortion can operate through law, faith, and symbolic correspondence. During Project Vortex he redirects the believers' connection from the Uncertain Mist to himself, temporarily acquiring the boon system's control over them and using it to execute Brokers across the world. He later uses shared origin and a close mystical connection to make the sealed Genie equivalent to the distant Uncertain Mist for the purpose of an attack. Neither feat is arbitrary: the first relies on the Vortex's link and compatible corruption, while the second needs the lamp, the Uncertain Mist's corruption, the Nation of Disorder's power, and Amon's Error authority. (Chapters 2307 and 2315–2316)

The pathway's defining survival mechanism is resurrection through established order. Once a Black Emperor has completed the ritual, the Uniqueness and three Sequence 1 characteristics return while the emperor's mausoleums and the order “He” created remain. Roselle uses this property first in a failed purification attempt and later as the basis for a promised return after his sacrifice. A new Black Emperor, total collapse of his order, or destruction of the supporting structure can prevent or alter that return. By Chapter 2591 the Uniqueness has been lent to the Nation of Disorder, and a future resurrection may recover only two Prince of Abolition characteristics if a new consciousness consolidates there first. • Bernadette Gustav: Roselle's eldest daughter and the family member he most openly cherishes. Her rejection of his corrupted later behavior becomes a century-long search for the truth; their reconciliations precede both his sealing and his final sacrifice.
• Klein Moretti: A fellow Earthling who learns from Roselle's diaries and reaches his mausoleum. Roselle entrusts Bernadette to him, while Klein helps maintain the seal and preserves a route toward rescue.
• Amon: A dangerous divine collaborator in Project Vortex. Roselle combines Black Emperor Distortion with Amon's exploitation of equivalence to injure the Uncertain Mist.
• Adam: Leader of the Twilight Hermit Order and hidden manipulator of Roselle's era. Roselle fears the Spectator's influence, but later recognizes and participates in Adam's plan against the Uncertain Mist.
• Zaratul: An early adviser who predicts Bernadette's estrangement and Roselle's children's futures. His prophecies trouble Roselle and foreshadow consequences the emperor cannot yet understand.
• Cattleya: Bernadette's adopted daughter and the principal conduit through which Roselle's diaries reach The Fool. Roselle's legacy shapes her Mystery Pryer advancement even though their relationship is indirect.
