Bernadette Gustav

Bernadette Gustav is the eldest daughter of Roselle Gustav, the captain of the Dawn, founder of Element Dawn, and the pirate monarch known as Queen Mystic. She leaves Intis after rejecting her father's increasingly extreme later conduct, then spends more than a century investigating what changed him and whether he can return. Her search brings her into alliance with Klein Moretti, advances her to Sequence 2 Sage, and eventually makes her both the architect of Roselle's temporary revival and the keeper of his remaining chance to resurrect.

Biography

Roselle's Daughter and Estrangement

Bernadette is born while Roselle and her mother Matilda are still Low-Sequence Beyonders, leaving her free to select a pathway rather than inheriting one from a high-Sequence parent. Roselle delights in her childhood, teaches her words and knowledge, designs clothes, textbooks, toys, and games for her, and tells her fairy tales remembered from Earth. He privately considers teaching her Chinese but decides that letting her understand his diary would be mortifying and dangerous; instead, he teaches her the single written word “home” as a protective symbol connecting her to the family and world she cannot know. (Chapters 264, 615, and 866)

She grows into the caring, principled daughter Roselle describes: protective of her younger brothers, affectionate toward her mother, and deeply admiring of her father. Zaratul nevertheless predicts that she will hate Roselle, reject him, and become an important figure in the mysterious world. The prediction is fulfilled when Roselle's personality becomes extreme in his later years and his political and pathway choices appear to confirm that he has gone mad. Bernadette turns away from him without access to the decisive facts—the moon, the Mother Goddess of Depravity, and the resurrection plan—that would explain his conduct. After leaving Intis, Bernadette adopts two linked goals: determine whether she misunderstood her father and trace his steps for a possible revival. Her disagreement is therefore not indifference or a simple struggle for independence. She preserves his books, clothes, toys, diaries, and artifacts, follows clues concerning his secret organizations and mausoleums, and treats the apparent assassination as an unresolved supernatural event. The longer search allows her anger to coexist with longing until evidence finally turns the former into guilt. (Chapters 972, 1100, 1308–1309)

Queen Mystic and Roselle's Legacy

Bernadette becomes a demigod of the Mystery Pryer pathway, captain of the Dawn, one of the Four Kings of the Five Seas, and leader of the secret organization Element Dawn. Her authority rests on knowledge and personal strength rather than inherited imperial office. By the time Klein meets her, her appearance, bounty, and control of dreams and information mark her as a major power, while her ability to move unseen around Cattleya's ship shows that she continues to protect and monitor the people under her care without always announcing her presence. (Chapters 661–674 and 678)

She adopts and raises Cattleya, teaches her mysticism, and makes her part of Element Dawn. Their publicly rumored falling-out conceals continued communication and protection. Cattleya's habit of relying on Bernadette leaves her simultaneously experienced and emotionally young in certain relationships, but Bernadette also permits her to form an independent bond with the Tarot Club. When Cattleya's attempts to pass Bernadette's questions to The Fool cross a boundary, Bernadette accepts the new rules rather than demanding obedience, and later supplies the diaries through her. Roselle's legacy is both resource and unsolved burden. Bernadette possesses diaries she cannot read, knows the activation incantations for his cards, preserves artifacts connected to his exploration, and develops fairytale magic from stories he told her. She initially seeks the interpreter behind Hero Bandit Black Emperor, offering high-level knowledge or assistance for the method. Klein's refusal to expose the language does not end the exchange; it transforms it into a cautious trade in which Bernadette supplies diary pages and objects while receiving answers about Roselle's late years. Alliance with The Fool

Bernadette's relationship with The Fool develops through evidence rather than immediate faith. She realizes that the hidden existence behind Cattleya can interpret Roselle's diary and knows secrets beyond an ordinary organization. Her later exchanges with Klein include warnings about Hornacis, information about the Blasphemy Slates and pathways, and cooperation against George III's Black Emperor ritual. Her stated hatred of war and harm to innocents gives her common ground with Klein, while her knowledge of Roselle's order gives her a personal reason to prevent another Black Emperor from blocking his resurrection. The alliance becomes direct when Klein locates Roselle's final mausoleum. Bernadette reaches the primitive island with Pale Death and the Sage Frontlet, enters despite the corruption, and finds the father she has sought for more than a century. Roselle's confession confirms that she had misunderstood the source of his later transformation. When he orders her to seal him, she chooses effective action over denial: Pale Death places him in a deathlike sleep, and Klein grafts death and renewed life together so the regenerating corruption cannot immediately break the seal. Bernadette's obedience saves the outside world but turns her hoped-for reunion into a second separation. (Chapters 1300–1309)

The crisis also completes her Clairvoyant ritual—preventing a disaster involving higher-order power—and gives her the conditions to become a Sequence 2 Sage. She drinks the potion because rescuing Roselle now requires greater strength, survives the dangerous transformation into information, and resists the Hidden Sage's intrusion with her anchors, Cattleya's concern, Element Dawn's prayers, and Klein's intervention. Orange Light then conveys knowledge of the cosmos, Great Old Ones, and Roselle's corruption on The Fool's behalf. The alliance has thus moved beyond barter: Klein protects her advancement because of both Roselle's request and Bernadette's own role in the coming apocalypse. (Chapter 1309)

Her Father's Corruption and Rescue

After The Fool enters slumber, Bernadette continues searching for a viable cure. The Genie in the Magic Wishing Lamp tells her that Roselle may be stabilized by a second, compatible corruption at the same level. She eventually accepts a gray transaction with Perle and the Uncertain Mist, intending to balance the Mother Goddess of Depravity's corruption long enough for Roselle to revive and await The Fool's return. She prepares contingencies and refuses to surrender the lamp when Perle changes the terms, but her willingness to facilitate morally gray trades violates her usual principle of doing as she wishes without harming others. (Chapters 1906 and 2295–2297)

Project Vortex grows beyond the bounded cure Bernadette intended. She attacks a transaction point with a re-enacted Spear of Longinus, only to learn that killing Perle too early would collapse the fragile balance within Roselle. Once the expanding network begins threatening the world, Roselle awakens, tells Bernadette that he is proud rather than condemning her, and takes control of the response. He traps her inside the mausoleum so she cannot follow him into danger. Bernadette supplies the Magic Wishing Lamp and second Blasphemy Slate for Adam's final arrangement, then watches Roselle choose to perish again after telling her to enjoy the world on his behalf. Amon gives Bernadette the Black Emperor Uniqueness as security: while she lives and keeps the crown, no replacement Black Emperor can permanently preempt Roselle's promised resurrection. The consolation is conditional rather than immediate. Roselle will need about a century, surviving order, and the absence of a successful replacement; the multiple corruptions intended to balance him will still be part of what returns. Bernadette accepts the promise while the corpus leaves open whether its exact future will unfold. (Chapter 2316)

In The Fool's dream, Bernadette encounters a mirrored Roselle who occupies the identity Huang Tao. Living near him lets her understand how the fairy tales, inventions, homesickness, and emotional distance of her childhood came from the old world. She nevertheless concludes that the mirror person's competing alliances endanger Klein's awakening and asks Lumian Lee to help expel her. The mirrored Roselle leaves willingly rather than force Bernadette to choose, and their final shared song grants emotional recognition without confusing the mirror person with the father awaiting resurrection. During the apocalypse Bernadette later permits Roselle's Uniqueness to strengthen the Nation of Disorder after being assured that his order can still call him back, accepting a potentially diminished resurrection so the world he asked her to enjoy has a chance to survive. Appearance and personality

Bernadette is tall and exceptionally beautiful, with long chestnut hair, straight eyebrows, deep blue eyes, and a face whose chin is slightly rounded. Her bearing carries long-practiced nobility and authority even when she dresses for movement rather than court. At sea she combines trousers, dark leather boots, layered skirts, captain's coats, or practical shirts in unconventional arrangements reminiscent of fashions Roselle introduced; she sometimes conceals herself with an old-fashioned bonnet and fishnet veil. She is calm, observant, decisive, and restrained in speech. Her knowledge and clairvoyance make her cautious about incomplete information, and she generally prefers bargaining, surveillance, prophecy, or prepared artifacts to reckless confrontation. She also hates war and harm to innocents and formulates her independence as “do as you wish, but do no harm.” That principle is genuine but not absolute: saving Roselle leads her to facilitate gray transactions, and the consequences force her to accept that love and foresight do not remove moral responsibility. Beneath her queenly composure, family attachments remain intense. She can make the immediate choice to seal her corrupted father, then privately collapse among the toys and clothes he made for her and weep. She protects Cattleya while allowing her room to grow, resonates with Lumian over loving a transmigrated family member, and hesitates before moving against the mirrored Roselle despite recognizing the strategic danger. Her emotional discipline is therefore not coldness; it is the method by which she continues to act while grief, guilt, and hope remain unresolved. (Chapters 1308–1309, 2445, and 2454–2455)

Pathways and abilities

Bernadette follows the Mystery Pryer pathway to Sequence 2 Sage. The pathway turns secret knowledge into practical magic but makes knowledge itself hazardous: mystery prying can expose the user to entities who notice the gaze, the Hidden Sage can forcibly instill information, and the transformation into an Information Creature can dissolve personal identity. Bernadette's style combines preparation, artifacts, prophecy, re-enacted stories, and direct control of information.

Mystery Pryer foundations

At low and middle Sequences, a Mystery Pryer gains spiritual perception, ritual and occult knowledge, Eyes of Mystery Prying, spellcraft, and progressively broader magical techniques. The special eyes can observe hidden or remote conditions and reveal details ordinary vision misses, but looking at a superior being or dangerous mystery can bring corruption and loss of control. Bernadette's surveillance of ships, dream entry, spirit-world summons, and use of ancient words reflect this foundation, though some particular effects also come from her higher Sequence or artifacts. Knowledge acquisition is active rather than automatically safe. Bernadette studies myths, histories, pathways, spirit-world creatures, and Roselle's artifacts, but remains wary of the Hidden Sage's involuntary knowledge infusion. Roselle's ambition to become a Knowledge Emperor partly arises from wanting to protect her from that threat. Her later advancement proves the danger was real: the Hidden Sage tries to merge external secret information into her while she is reassembling her body, and only Klein's temporary isolation prevents the interference from determining the result. Mysticologist and Mystical Re-enactment

The core ability of a Sequence 4 Mysticologist is Mystical Re-enactment, which draws power from genuine mystical knowledge to create spells. Knowledge that is secret, narrowly known, and spiritually significant generally produces a stronger effect; widely spread accounts yield weaker magic. The story must possess a mystical basis rather than merely being any invented fiction, and effectiveness can change as knowledge spreads or as the user's understanding proves incomplete. This makes research, secrecy, and accurate interpretation part of Bernadette's combat strength. (Chapters 2297, 2463, and 2481)

Bernadette's best-known applications resemble fairy tales because Roselle told her stories whose sources lay in the hidden pre-Epoch world. She can create dreamlike environments, dissolve into bubbles, construct concealed scenes such as a peach-blossom refuge, and reproduce legendary weapons or events. During Project Vortex she creates the Spear of Longinus, an ancient weapon stained with the blood of a great being, and hurls it with force capable of threatening divine targets. The ritual point survives because the Vortex's structure prevents a participant from being reached normally, illustrating that a powerful re-enactment can still fail when its target relation is false or inaccessible. In the operation to awaken The Fool, Mystical Re-enactment can give the story of Gehrman Sparrow a temporary body when joined to believers' anchors and other external sources. The related “Path of Salvation” spell is individually weak because many people know the event, but its purpose is not raw damage: it helps stabilize the identity and symbolism of the Angel of Redemption. This shows Bernadette's domain at its most strategic—knowledge can become a person, place, weapon, or narrative function when the mystical correspondences and supporting anchors are sufficient. Clairvoyant

As a Sequence 3 Clairvoyant, Bernadette receives visions, reads opportunities and dangers, and performs prophecy through fate and the information world. She foresees that preventing a higher-level disaster will complete her advancement ritual and uses that understanding to carry the necessary Sage ingredients. She also prepares backup plans before Project Vortex and recognizes from signs when plans have failed, although the Vortex demonstrates that foresight can be incorporated into a larger arrangement by powers above the seer. (Chapters 1309 and 2296–2315)

Clairvoyance does not provide a complete chronological report. Revelations are symbolic, conditional, and often identify only a baseline: fate may show that a month remains comparatively safe without warning that disaster begins immediately afterward, or reveal that hope still exists later without saying an earlier action is superior. Anti-prophecy, higher authorities, changed conditions, and the observer's interpretation all limit certainty. Bernadette retains this training after becoming a Sage, but explicitly recognizes during the apocalypse that treating a prophecy as a full schedule invites backlash. (Chapters 2581 and 2559)

Sage and information authority

Advancing to Sequence 2 Sage transforms Bernadette into thick, complex knowledge—a flux of information—from which she must reconstruct her body. In this state, the surrounding world appears as fundamental information and she can move as an information torrent, including through the mirror world. The form can bypass many ordinary physical constraints and later lets her pursue the mirrored Roselle directly, but it is not invulnerable: other information can infiltrate, wash away, or assimilate her consciousness, leaving a Knowledge Demon that cannot restore its human body. (Chapters 1309 and 2455)

Her successful advancement depends on several safeguards. Brief prior transformations through the Sage Frontlet give her experience; the solid information produced by completing her ritual provides a self-marked core; Klein increases favorable probability and isolates the Hidden Sage's intrusion; and prayers from Cattleya and Element Dawn serve as anchors against the ancient will in the characteristic. The mechanism shows that knowledge of the process is necessary but insufficient—identity, luck, preparation, and relationships all help decide whether the information reassembles as Bernadette. Once stabilized, she can grasp incoming information, extract the useful parts, reorganize information-based beings or objects, influence paintings, and support complex manifestations or illusions. She also continues to use earlier divination, summons, concealment, and Mystical Re-enactment at angelic strength. Her Sage acting centers on opposing disaster and preserving civilization; staying in Trier to prevent catastrophes and maintain order rapidly digests the potion because it joins abstract knowledge to practical responsibility. • Adam: The hidden architect whose cooperation lets Bernadette bypass Roselle's ban and whose Project Vortex plan uses her attempted cure. She works within the arrangement without fully remembering or controlling its final purpose.
