Ludwig

Ludwig is a sealed Angel of Devouring who lives as a blond, school-age boy. The Church of the God of Knowledge and Wisdom suppresses his angelic power, intelligence, and monstrous form, while education and ordinary care gradually give him a human childhood. After he leaves the Church with Lumian Lee, his hunger, food-derived knowledge, and ability to devour supernatural traits make him both a perilous ward and a valuable teammate. He ultimately recovers his angelic rank, advances to Sequence 1 Chaos Gastric Juices, and chooses to keep growing up as a human rather than immediately surrender to the instincts of Primordial Hunger. Biography

Dangerous Child and Dependent

When Lumian encounters Ludwig in Trier, the boy has escaped from Baron Brignais and the Church's educational supervision because he detests homework and examinations. Hunger has driven him to eat live rats and raw meat, yet he can still critique cooking with a professional palate. Lumian recognizes both a child's transparent excuses and something dangerously inhuman beneath them. He returns Ludwig to Brignais instead of exploiting him, believing an orthodox Church is safer than allowing an unidentified creature with an apparently bottomless appetite to wander through the city. (Chapters 1743–1746 and 1795)

Repeated escapes reveal that Ludwig's schooling is more than a comic punishment. He becomes better at reasoning, produces increasingly childlike emotional reactions, and learns habits that restrain his instincts, even though mystical sight shows something struggling beneath his human skin. Brignais supplies a meal every two hours and treats him as an adopted child, while the Church uses education and a powerful seal to suppress his true body, memories, intelligence, and rank. Ludwig resents that confinement, but it is also the structure through which an old Angel begins acquiring the outlook of a young human. (Chapters 1795 and 1887)

After the Trier catastrophe, Ludwig asks Lumian to help him escape the Church and offers restricted information about Salinger's Blood Banner as payment. The documents point Lumian toward Morora, and Fors Wall concludes that the Church probably allowed the “theft” to deliver that hint. Lumian takes Ludwig away, feeds him, and calls him his godson; Ludwig chooses to remain until he can support himself. The arrangement recalls Lumian's dependence on Aurore Lee: practical feeding and supervision turn an initially opportunistic bargain into a genuine, if hazardous, family obligation. Travel makes the burden concrete. Lugano must provide constant meals and supervision whenever Lumian acts, while Lumian repeatedly plans around what starvation or hostile contact might provoke. Ludwig's appetite becomes an investigative resource when he demonstrates that eating can transfer knowledge, memories, traits, and abilities for a limited period. Consuming Batings Black Insects gives him their origin, biology, and paralytic properties; he then processes one into a drink that permanently strengthens a first-time consumer and temporarily grants contact paralysis. Blood tells him which organs a victim lacks, flesh from Loki yields pathway knowledge and private memories, and contaminated food can reveal an enemy's powers. Lumian eventually learns that Ludwig is not merely a sealed demigod but an Angel who once served Primordial Hunger through the Devouring Whirlpool. The seal prevents normal convergence with fellow believers and restricts his usable strength below Sequence 5 Depriver, though his angelic body and fate remain. To make Ludwig part of the team and satisfy his own advancement ritual, Lumian begins “taming” him with acceptable orders: plan a tour of meat-pie shops, write a food report, and gradually obey even when instinct resists. Project Vortex tests whether that learned loyalty can oppose his pathway's pull. Ludwig initially wants to remain where the “Angel of Primordial Hunger” is being recovered and later hesitates to fight the cultists sent for him. Lumian reminds him of the life he now enjoys, promises a feast, and threatens a return to the Church; Ludwig chooses his godfather and charges Voisin Sanson. He attempts to strip the Circle Inhabitant's power and repeatedly re-enters the fight despite fate manipulations that make him stumble. The Dream and the Apocalypse

Ludwig enters Klein Moretti's dream with Lumian, Franca Roland, Jenna, and Anthony Reid. The dream suppresses him to approximately Sequence 7, making airborne or skin-contact pathogens genuine threats, yet it also provides consumable manifestations carrying real supernatural effects. He eats diseased flesh and a Sleepless mouse, identifies a reanimated body's true position by which version smells most appetizing, and helps the team withdraw from Zaratulstra by changing his mouth, guiding the disoriented Lumina, and entering Jenna's mirror. These are supporting actions rather than solo victories, showing that his appetite can function within coordinated plans. (Chapters 2333–2369 and 2412–2413)

The dream also deepens Ludwig's ordinary preferences. He initially objects because the mission promises more study and examinations, but later admits that he likes the food, cartoons, and the way his companions treat him there. After the dream ends, meals, an opera outing, domestic teasing, and constant adult supervision remain part of his life. This development does not erase his hunger or old allegiance; it gives him experiences against which his divine instincts can be compared, and it makes the team a family whose orders he understands rather than merely fears. Before the apocalypse, Lumian offers Ludwig a Weather Warlock characteristic contained in his own hand. Devouring it overwhelms the Church's seal and restores Ludwig to Sequence 2 Angel of Devouring, but Ludwig deliberately keeps the seal's outer form and the body of a boy. Asked about his future, he says he wants to remain a child, grow normally, age, and experience a complete human life before comparing it with existence as an Angel. With help from a Great Old existence, Ludwig later devours the Primordial Hunger power hidden in the Box of the Great Old Ones, becoming a Sequence 1 Chaos Gastric Juices and playing a pivotal role in the Red Angel Legion. Lumian uses Ludwig's acknowledgment of him as father and the power's direct origin to create a symbolic connection that briefly deceives Primordial Hunger during the final battle. His post-crisis status is conveyed indirectly rather than through a final physical appearance: Franca sees Anthony waiting vigilantly outside Ludwig's school for class to end. Appearance and personality

Ludwig ordinarily appears to be a sturdy seven- or eight-year-old boy with short blond or light-yellow hair, brown eyes, chubby cheeks, and lingering baby fat. He is frequently dressed like a miniature gentleman in a white shirt, black formal jacket and shorts, white socks, and black shoes, and he carries a heavy dark-red school bag. In the dream city he also wears children's formal clothing and bear pajamas. These are physical appearances of Ludwig himself, not descriptions inferred from reports or mentions. His human skin is a seal rather than a complete account of his body. Through the Mystery Prying Glasses, Lumian sees Ludwig's skin writhing as something underneath tries to emerge. Severe injury similarly reveals movement beneath torn flesh, and recovering angelic strength makes his body seem ready to split the boy's form apart. The corpus never gives a stable, complete visual description of his unsealed Mythical Creature form because Ludwig deliberately retains his child appearance even after the seal can no longer restrain him. Ludwig follows the boon pathway originating from Primordial Hunger, called the Gourmet pathway by Lumian's group. Its demonstrated middle stages center on preparing, consuming, and depriving: Chef can transform supernatural ingredients into food that grants traits or temporary abilities, while Sequence 5 Depriver can sense dangerous traits in a target and strip them away one after another. The broader Depriver stage prioritizes powers that pose the greatest danger and removes them sequentially, but the effect is not absolute: superior rank, distance, fate interference, speed, and repeated attacks can prevent the deprivation from deciding a fight. • Angel of Devouring: At Sequence 2, Ludwig can devour a local rule or shallow concept. Removing the rule of sunlight illumination makes even newly created sunlight fail until he establishes a replacement; consuming the concept of gold removes its color throughout the affected area. He can reuse a swallowed rule once, while repeated use requires consuming the source power. The number, range, and depth of targets are limited, and physical beings resist the vortex he must create to pull them into his mouth.
