Box of the Great Old Ones

The Box of the Great Old Ones is a silver-black, gem-studded jewelry box with three escalating layers of spatial and cosmic danger. Bethel Abraham named it after it formed from an Abraham angel who died in terror after roaming the cosmos.

History

Botis and the Abraham legacy

Botis steals the box from the Abraham family. Its origin explains both its authority and its danger: a Fourth Epoch Abraham angel wandered the cosmos, returned fatally terrified, and left a corpse and characteristic that became the artifact. Botis uses its first layer to turn locations and people into toys and relies on its second layer for movement, while the object's uncontrolled effects make even carrying it hazardous. Cattleya secures it after Botis's defeat and sacrifices it to Klein Moretti, who temporarily labels it 0-61. (Chapters 1195–1205)

Return, loans, and deeper layers

Klein uses the box in the exchange that returns it to the Abraham family. It is later borrowed through Fors Wall for operations where its spatial imprisonment and transport can overcome otherwise inaccessible defenses. A carefully prepared trip to the Underworld succeeds only with exceptional support; ordinary “designated” travel remains dangerously unreliable. (Chapters 1208–1211, 1234–1235, and 1286)

Opening the final layer

Lumian Lee later borrows the box and uses both its trapping and transport functions. During the apocalyptic crisis, he opens the third layer despite the warning attached to it. The revealed authority is associated with Primordial Hunger and begins devouring not merely matter but mind, time, concepts, and rules. Lumian ultimately throws the still-critical box to Ludwig; the supplied corpus ends without clarifying whether Ludwig closes it, consumes its danger, or becomes its lasting custodian. Abilities and properties

• The first layer swaps a designated area with the box's interior and miniaturizes enclosed objects and living beings into toy-like forms. Closing the lid traps them; powerful substitutions or self-destruction can provide an escape route. (Chapters 1195–1199 and 2563–2565)
• The second layer records destinations and transports the holder and nearby living beings. A destination can be added, but travel remains effectively random: below Sequence 0, even luck cannot reliably force the exact result. Exceptional blessings or miracles may improve an attempt, though the precise cause of a successful Underworld arrival is not isolated. (Chapters 1199–1203 and 1234–1235)
• The third layer releases a Primordial Hunger-related force. Demonstrated effects include devouring subconscious thought, memories, spirit, flesh, day and night, concepts, and rules, destabilizing the surrounding reality. This is not shown as a safely selectable menu of effects. (Chapters 2575–2577 and 2594)
• Merely carrying the box exposes its holder to random disappearance, death, or mutation. When it has no holder, nearby creatures suffer terrifying events whose reach and severity relate to distance and the affected body's size. (Chapters 1195–1200)
• Its prescribed seal is a concealed, distorted region of the spirit world. Water must regularly be added so the box can “play” with microorganisms rather than redirecting its attention toward larger living beings. (Chapter 1200)
• The artifact has enough autonomy to awaken and participate in betrayal-related supernatural effects. Historical projections can reduce the long-term cost of some uses, but they do not make an opened layer harmless. (Chapters 1204–1205 and 1286)
