Lin TianAo

Lin TianAo is an Ultimate Defense Heavenly Jewel Master who leads the Fei Li Battle Team before becoming one of Zhou Weiqing's closest companions and most dependable officers. His Earth Elemental and Defense Physical Attributes, highly specialized shield, and patient battlefield judgment make him a living bulwark, while his conduct after losing a lifetime-following wager turns an imposed obligation into freely chosen loyalty.

Biography

The wager in Fei Li City

Lin approaches Zhou and Yun Li after seeing two Consolidating Equipment Masters wager over lifetime service in an underground arena. Already a five-Jeweled Mid Level Zun Stage master, he offers to stand still without counterattacking for the time it takes an incense stick to burn; if either opponent moves his feet, he will follow them for life, but if they fail, both must follow him. His confidence rests on an extreme cultivation path in which nearly all of his power has been committed to defense. Although he presents the terms as fair and stresses how useful his protection would be, his urgency reveals that he is not merely seeking prestige. He needs a gifted Consolidating Equipment Master who can continue the increasingly difficult design of his Assembly Set Shield, and he is prepared to gamble his freedom to secure that future. The contest exposes both the strength and the narrowness of that choice. Lin handles an assembled tower shield weighing almost six thousand jin with one hand, withstands Yun Li's strongest assaults, and sustains shield-amplified Rock Armour while refusing to move. Yet his certainty leads him to underestimate Zhou's control skills and layered timing. Zhou suppresses the defensive skills surrounding Lin's body, forces out his once-per-summoning Illusory Shield, and lands the final impact before the effects expire. Tian'er's covert intervention conceals Zhou's Alexandrite Jewel and unusual skills from the arena observer rather than weakening Lin, so his defeat remains the result of the challengers' plan and execution. Lin answers the loss without evasion. He accepts a Blood Rites seal, promises that he is now Zhou's man, and asks only for three months to finish an important commitment. Zhou grants the request on Lin's word, and the reason becomes clear when Lin reappears as captain of the Fei Li Battle Team: he has spent three years preparing to return to the Heavenly Jewel Tournament and restore honor to Fei Li. The beginning of their bond therefore contains the traits that later make it voluntary—Lin's pride can draw him into a reckless wager, but once he gives his word, personal disappointment does not excuse breaking it. (Chapters 61 and 64–70)

Captain of the Fei Li Battle Team

As captain, Lin organizes the team's formation around his own capacity to absorb danger. During the Heavenly Beast forest training, he places himself at the center of the defense, remains composed when the disguised Little Witch attacks, and continues meditating through severe injuries after three days of pressure. When the battered team considers withdrawing from the tournament rather than suffering humiliation, he is prepared to accept responsibility even though the competition has been his goal for years. Zhou's treatment helps him recover and persuades him that the team can still compete, converting their nominal follower-master relationship into practical mutual reliance. (Chapters 67–70)

The match against the Bai Da Battle Team tests Lin's leadership under national as well as personal pressure. He warns that contests between Fei Li and Bai Da routinely end in bloodshed and insists they cannot yield merely to avoid sacrifice. Fighting beside Zhou, he absorbs Lang Xie's extreme-offense assault, then turns defense into positional control: a shield-borne Charge creates an opening, the Illusory Shield blocks retreat, and the assembled tower shield separates into five striking pieces. Their unpracticed coordination defeats Lang Xie and proves that Lin's stability and Zhou's improvisation are complementary. Lin responds by voluntarily handing tactical command to Zhou, recognizing that his own steady style anchors the team but does not exploit openings as creatively. He remains its captain and cornerstone while letting the better field tactician direct their fights. (Chapters 79–81)

That decision extends beyond combat. When Zhou overtrains after personal distress, Lin speaks to him successively as follower, team leader, and friend. He warns that people without a Great Saint Land's inherited resources must advance step by step, and that forcing cultivation can cause deviation; Zhou receives the concern as an older brother's counsel. Lin later follows Little Witch's instructions to feed Heavenly Energy into an unconscious Zhou in controlled amounts, protects him during the confrontation that follows, and leads the team cautiously on Heavenly Jewel Island. Zhou, in turn, continues calling him Leader and never exploits the wager. By the time Zhou takes him to commission the next shield pieces, the resentment Lin once felt toward his loss has largely dissolved. (Chapters 82, 88, and 93–96)

Lin's decisive choice in the Lustre Spatial Realm completes that change. When Zhou intervenes in the conflict around the mother dragon, Lin brings the Fei Li team into a battle that could carry serious political consequences rather than abandon him. He intercepts Zhan Lingtian's attack with his five-piece shield and is driven back, but the delay gives Zhou the instant needed to transform and survive. After Fei Li wins the tournament, Lin tells Zhou that the championship has fulfilled the dream of his old life and that losing the wager may have been his greatest fortune. Zhou gives him the champion's custom Consolidating Equipment reward, then removes the Blood Rites seal when Lin publicly reveals the wager and kneels to affirm his service. Lin thereafter remains not because a seal compels him, but because he regards Zhou and the team as brothers. (Chapters 103–109)

The end of the tournament also gives Lin a viable cultivation future. Three God Tier Consolidating Equipment Masters preserve the shield's progression by designing its sixth through ninth pieces, with the ninth planned at God Tier rather than prematurely making the sixth piece incompatible with later growth. Lin reaches six Jewels soon afterward and Consolidates the sixth shield. His first uses of the upgrade include helping defeat assassins and blocking a Silver Emperor's Spatial Rend aimed at Shangguan Fei'er; the latter shatters his summoned shield and leaves him injured, but again buys an ally the time needed to answer the attack. When Zhou grieves over the fall of Heavenly Bow, Lin stands guard rather than intruding, and he follows Zhou north when returning directly to the occupied homeland would accomplish little. Building the Peerless Battalion

Zhou's entry into the northern army shifts Lin from tournament captain to organizer, instructor, and quartermaster for a force being built in secret. Entrusted with the companions' safety while Zhou infiltrates alone, he buys a base in TianBei, establishes watches and daily contact, and begins training Ma Qun. As recruits gather, Zhou gives Lin control of major purchases: he spreads armor orders among cities, secures bows, arrows, storage objects, and funds, moves finished batches without exposing the operation, and refines plans with Zhou. His reliability allows the nascent Peerless Battalion to turn sudden wealth and unconventional recruits into a supplied military unit rather than an armed crowd. (Chapters 118–136)

Lin's defensive specialization scales naturally into battlefield engineering and cavalry combat. Against the Swift Wolf Regiment, his Earth Attribute tears open a broad trench that breaks the charge and lets the Peerless troops exploit their bows. He serves as concealed backup during a dangerous confrontation with the army command, then blocks Shen Bu's furious advance without injuring her, using minute shield angles and footwork to prevent her from bringing her strength to bear. In open cavalry fighting, Rock Armour covers both Lin and his mount as they crash through an opposing rider and Unicorn Beast, while he and Fei'er guard Zhou's flanks. These actions show that his role is not passive endurance: he uses terrain, position, and timing to decide where an enemy's force can be applied. (Chapters 146–150 and 157)

Away from the front line, Lin oversees the conversion of resources into repeatable military strength. He tracks armor, weapon, and scroll production, helps coordinate the Consolidating Equipment Masters, and expects every recruit to receive the battalion's bow-and-mail combination before the next WanShou campaign. The heavy armor developed from his and Zhou's planning later protects the Berserker and Gold Crow warriors and strengthens their commitment to the unit. Long Shiya's later pointers improve Lin's shield control, but command does not make him careless with secrets: even as repeated sparring with Shen Bu develops into personal closeness, he gives her only limited information about the Peerless force. His steadiness thus becomes institutional as well as physical—he protects the organization through preparation and discretion. (Chapters 153–166 and 186–188)

Crescent City and the restoration campaign

When the Peerless Regiment advances toward Heavenly Bow, Lin's old Fei Li loyalties complicate rather than weaken his service. During Fei Li's challenge, Zhou concedes a round instead of forcing Lin and Xiao Yan to fight their former principal. Lin knows the group might have won and feels responsible for the concession, but accepts Zhou's refusal to make comrades violate a formative bond. He soon protects the group from massed ranged attacks with an enlarged six-piece shield, demonstrating how his equipment now covers not merely his own body but a formation around him. By this stage he is close to seven Jewels, supported by the cores, scrolls, skills, and cultivation time that following Zhou has made available. (Chapters 191–192)

The first Heavenly King assassination attempt at Crescent City strikes directly at Lin's understanding of his duty. His poor speed leaves him behind the faster companions racing to Zhou, so he cannot intercept the attack; he can only fetch Duan Tianlang when Zhou's subsequent transformation becomes unstable. Lin treats that failure as personal rather than unavoidable. While holding temporary authority over Crescent City during Zhou's month of closed cultivation, he drives himself to a seven-Jewel breakthrough and completes the seventh shield, while also maintaining recruits, defenses, intelligence, supplies, and contact with the approaching main force. He emerges convinced that he can at least block one attack from the assassin who passed him before. (Chapters 195–200)

He fulfills that resolution in the second attempt. Lin stations himself directly behind Zhou with the seven-piece shield already summoned and reacts first when the disguised Heavenly King strikes. The assassin's eight-piece Assembly Set sword destroys the shield in a single blow and throws Lin through the air, revealing the severe gaps in cultivation and equipment between them, but the block still buys a crucial second for Shangguan Xue'er to counter. Lin cannot defeat such an enemy; his success is making a lethal attack survivable for someone else. Afterward he supports the exhausted Zhou away from the walls, resuming the ordinary work of protection once the spectacular danger has passed. (Chapters 201–202)

During the larger siege, Lin alternates between guarding Zhou, commanding soldiers when Zhou takes the air force out, and defending another face of the city beside Xiao Yan. He returns wounded with his titanium mail nearly destroyed, carrying the unconscious Xiao Yan and insisting that his companion receive top merit for destroying the battering ram. He reports losses without disguising them and remains focused on preserving the living. By the latest direct phase of his story, Lin is therefore no longer simply the man who wagered himself for a better shield: he is a seven-Jeweled officer whose defense, logistics, mentorship, and judgment help make the restoration army sustainable. Ma Qun's later use of his teachings carries that defensive school forward even when Lin is absent from the next tournament. (Chapters 203–209 and 223)

Appearance and personality

At his first appearance, Lin is taller than the 1.9-meter Zhou and enormously broad through the shoulders, with conspicuous muscles that make even Zhou look slender beside him. He has round eyes, a well-formed forehead, short red hair, and a full beard and whiskers that obscure his age. The combination gives him a fierce aspect, but his deep blue eyes remain calm as the sea; standing still, he resembles an immovable mountain. His voice has a similarly metallic, thick, and powerful quality. Later, in a plain army uniform, he is described as roughly thirty, with simple, stout features and the same stable presence. (Chapters 58 and 150)

Lin is serious, controlled, and unusually consistent about responsibility. Ambition and overconfidence lead him to risk his freedom in the arena, yet he accepts the result without bargaining and completes his prior tournament obligation before beginning the new one. As leader, he is cautious enough to consider withdrawal when his injured team appears unready, but not timid: national rivalry, loyalty to companions, or a clear protective duty can make him accept grave danger. He readily acknowledges Zhou's stronger tactical imagination, praises Xiao Yan instead of claiming battlefield credit, and treats subordinates' survival and equipment as command responsibilities. His defining development is the conversion of formal following into chosen brotherhood. Lin initially regards the Blood Rites bond as the bleak price of his loss, but Zhou's respect, generosity, and refusal to abuse authority remove his resentment before the seal itself is lifted. He continues calling himself a follower afterward because the word now expresses a self-imposed promise to protect Zhou. That promise can become harsh self-judgment when speed or circumstance makes protection impossible, but it also pushes him to cultivate, plan, and place himself between danger and others. Abilities and cultivation

Lin is an Ultimate Defense Heavenly Jewel Master whose Physical Jewels provide toughness and whose Elemental Jewels carry the Earth Attribute. Because both sides of his Heavenly Jewels reinforce the same purpose, and because he devotes his Consolidated Equipment progression to a single shield assembly, he possesses extraordinary defense for his level at the cost of limited speed and offensive variety. He first appears at five Jewels, reaches six shortly after the tournament, and completes a seven-Jewel breakthrough during the Crescent City campaign. (Chapters 58–60, 108–114, 150, and 200–201)

Ultimate Defense and Earth skills

Lin's toughness, Earth Attribute, and equipment reinforce one another rather than operating as separate layers. Rock Armour covers his body in defensive stone and is much stronger when released through the socketed shield; at five Jewels, the combined effect withstands Yun Li's concentrated attack after only a small portion cracks. An efficiency property acquired as the assembly grows reduces its Heavenly Energy consumption and lets Lin maintain peak defense much longer than the shield's scale suggests. That endurance is not inexhaustible—powerful shield skills still consume Heavenly Energy, and control that interrupts the armor and its supporting effects can expose his body—but ordinary opponents at the same stage struggle to force such an opening. The Earth Attribute also gives Lin area control and protection beyond his own body. He can manipulate ground to bury bodies and, on a military scale, open a trench roughly thirty meters wide and six meters deep across a cavalry approach. Rock Armour can extend over his mount, allowing both to survive a headlong collision that brings down an enemy rider and beast. These applications require the enemy to meet him on terrain his Earth power can affect; they do not correct his basic lack of speed, which remains the central weakness of an otherwise exceptional guard. Assembly Set Shield

Lin's signature Assembly Set Shield begins as several separate Consolidated pieces that fuse into an increasingly large tower shield. Every piece occupies a Physical Jewel equipment position that could have supplied a different weapon or armor component, making the set an extreme commitment to one defensive object. At four pieces it weighs nearly six thousand jin, yet Lin's unusual natural strength lets him wield it one-handed; at five, it supports multiple sockets and powers such as Rock Armour, Charge, and Illusory Shield. The shield can also disassemble into its component pieces for attacks from several angles, though Lin uses that offensive mode selectively rather than abandoning his defensive role. (Chapters 59–60 and 80–81)

Illusory Shield creates a shield image at a nearby position chosen by Lin. The image has one-fifth of the assembled shield's full defensive power, and Lin can use it either to catch an attack that bypasses his main guard or to close an opponent's retreat. At the five-piece stage it is available only once each time he summons the assembly and exacts a heavy Heavenly Energy cost, so forcing it out early removes an important last defense. Charge supplies a brief burst of speed through the shield, partially compensating for Lin's slow movement and turning his mass into impact, but it is a committed linear action rather than general agility. (Chapters 60 and 81)

The tournament reward changes the set from a path at risk of ending into a planned progression. God Tier masters judge that placing the God Tier component sixth would prevent a coherent ten-piece future, so they instead design pieces six through nine with the ninth as the God Tier reward. Lin Consolidates the sixth immediately after breaking through and later the seventh at Crescent City. Six pieces can briefly withstand attacks from opponents far above his stage and expand into a shield about five meters across to cover a group; seven pieces can intercept an eight-piece Heavenly King assassin's strike, though that single blow destroys the summoned shield and throws Lin away. The corpus does not say that the Consolidated pieces themselves are permanently lost, and it presents a nine-piece version capable of troubling a Heavenly King as the designers' projection, not as a stage Lin has reached. Defensive technique and battlefield command

Lin's defense depends as much on practiced positioning as on raw durability. His Blocking Out technique uses small steps and minute changes of shield angle to occupy the line an attacker needs, denying them room to develop full force instead of absorbing every blow directly. Years of studying movement, blocking, and personal defense have made the responses close to muscle memory. The technique is highly effective against human opponents and Heavenly Beasts, but it is constrained by position and reaction time: Lin cannot block an attack he cannot reach, and overwhelming cultivation can still break both shield and guard even when his timing is correct. (Chapters 80–81, 150, and 195–201)

He applies the same principles to groups. With the Fei Li team, he constructs formations around himself as the stable defensive center, judges when injured companions should withdraw, and yields active tactical direction to Zhou when improvisation is more valuable. In the Peerless force, that judgment broadens into watches, procurement, training, terrain preparation, city administration, and temporary battlefield command. These are learned military competencies rather than Jewel skills, but they multiply the value of his cultivation: a shield can save one opening, while timely supplies, armor, and placement keep an entire unit capable of surviving the next one. • Zhou Weiqing: Lin loses a lifetime-following wager to Zhou, but their relationship changes through shared command, mutual trust, and Zhou's refusal to exploit the bond. Even after Zhou removes the Blood Rites seal, Lin chooses to remain his follower, brother, and defensive lieutenant.
• Ma Qun: Ma Qun shares Lin's Earth and Defense attributes and becomes his disciple. Lin trains him in the defensive path and Assembly Set Shield use, extending his specialized combat school into the younger Peerless officer.
